Exsolution Of La0.3sr0.7ti0.9co0.1o3-X Cathode For Co2 And H2o Co-Electrolysis Using Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell, Sothearoth Heng
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
One way to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable future energy scenarios is through the valorization of CO2 into valuable chemicals using solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). However, the electrochemical performance and sulfur tolerance of cathode materials used for SOECs under a gas feed containing H2S species still requires further development. In this study, we successfully synthesized in-situ exsolved Co nanoparticles decorated on the La0.3Sr0.7Ti0.9Co0.1O3-x (LSTC) perovskite oxide (ex-LSTC) under a reductive atmosphere at high temperatures. The electrolyte-supported single cell with the ex-LSTC cathode exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activity toward CO2 and H2O co-electrolysis with a maximum current density of approximately 705 …

Synthesis Of Furocoumarin Derivatives As Anti-Cancer Agents, Chiphada Aekrungrueangkit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Furocoumarin derivatives are one of interesting scaffolds which show potential as an anti-cancer agent. The previous work has found the anticancer activity especially of the methoxsalen (8-MOP) derivatives with an amide group at the C-5 position. However, the scope of the substituents in the previous study on this scaffold remains lacking. Additionally, despite the promising anticancer properties of these furocoumarin derivatives, the information about mechanism of action or target enzymes is still inconclusive. Herein, a series of furocoumarin derivatives with C-5 substitution were successfully synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against eight cancer cell lines: breast cancers (MDA-MB-231 …
Electrochemical Cyclization Of Chalcones For Synthesis Of Flavones, Taweesak Gulchatchai
Electrochemical Cyclization Of Chalcones For Synthesis Of Flavones, Taweesak Gulchatchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Flavone is considered as one of the important compounds in pharmaceutical and medicinal fields due to the existence of various biological activities, leading to various flavone synthetic methods. Even though most of the reported methods are efficient, they involve the use of harsh conditions, strong oxidizing agents, expensive metal catalysts, hazardous solvents, or multistep synthesis of starting materials. To overcome these limitations, in this work, we developed a novel electrochemical cyclization reaction for the synthesis of flavones from easy-access 2’-hydroxychalcones. In this electrochemical cyclization, platinum plates were used as electrodes in ethanol/water solvent under open air and room temperature in …

Effect Of The Second Promoter On Pt/Wox/Al2o3 Catalyst Deactivation For The Selective Glycerol Hydrogenolysis To 1,3-Propanediol, Sittichai Damruang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The selective glycerol hydrogenolysis is a good promising reaction to produce 1,3-propanediol. The Pt-WOx bifunctional catalyst is extensively interested, but the catalyst deactivation via sintering, metal leaching, and coking can predominantly occur in the aqueous phase reaction. In this research, the effect of reaction temperature and pressure was investigated. The role of the second promoter on Pt/WOx/Al2O3 catalyst was studied, including Cu, Fe, Rh, Mn, Re, Ru, Ir, Sn, B, and P, to improve synergy between Pt, WOx, and Al2O3. The physicochemical properties and the interaction of Pt with Al2O3 were investigated as well. The second promoter improves the catalytic …

Enhancement Of Catalytic Stability Of Fe2o3/Sio2 Catalyst Prepared By The Sol-Gel Method For Selective Oxidation Of H2s To Sulfur., Athitaya Promtongkaew
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The H2S selective oxidation is the most attractive process for converting H2S to elemental sulfur, but the industrial problem of this process is the catalytic stability. In this work, two different synthesis methods (sol-gel (SG) compared with incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) as a widely used method) were used to synthesize iron oxide supported on silica catalysts (Fe2O3/SiO2) with metal loadings ranging from 0.5 to 10 %wt. The catalysts were tested for the selective oxidation of H2S, changing the operating conditions like temperature (170 – 250 °C), O2/H2S (0.5 – 2.5) and water content (0 – 50 %). A detailed characterization …

Lignin Micro-Nano Particles From Organosolv Lignin Of Domestically Available Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch, Orawan Thasanabenjakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Lignin nanoparticles have potential value in biomedical and environmental applications. Utilizing oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) for lignin nanoparticles production can improve the economics of oil palm. In this study, lignin was extracted from OPEFB by acid-catalyzed organosolv method, using either glycerol/glycerol carbonate or ethanol/water as the solvent. The FT-IR spectra of the lignin particles extracted by glycerol/glycerol carbonate and ethanol/water suggest that the ethanol/water system was able to remove more functional groups from the OPEFB than glycerol/glycerol carbonate. Without the homogenization, the organosolv lignin particle sizes extracted by glycerol/glycerol carbonate and ethanol/water were broadly distributed, ranging between 8-154 …

Effects Of Thai Silk Fibroin Content On Properties Of Bioactive Glass-Silk Fibroin Hybrid Scaffolds, Ayuth Vejpongsa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Hybrid scaffolds of bioactive glass (BG) and silk fibroin (SF) were fabricated. 70S30C (70% mol Si, 30% mol Ca) BG is a ceramic biomaterial with natural bone bonding and osteoconductivity potentials. SF is a natural polymer from the silk cocoon of bombyx mori with many desirable properties for tissue engineering applications. Hybridisation between these two biomaterials could mitigate the brittle characteristic of ceramic, enabling the scaffold to resist cyclic load better. This study varied the ratio between BG and SF (BG:SF; 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, 0:100) and characterized the scaffolds, noting the difference between the scaffolds as a result …

Roles Of Mtor Complex 2 In Canonical Wnt Signaling In Glioblastoma., Tankun Banlue
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common type of primary brain tumor in adults, comprising 75% of cases. The failure of GBM treatments is closely related to a subset of cells known as glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs), which possess stemness characteristics. While the Wnt signaling pathway plays a crucial role in regulating stem cell homeostasis, the interplay between this pathway and the mTORC2 signaling pathway in GBM remains unclear. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the collaborative regulation of stemness-related mechanisms by mTORC2 and canonical Wnt signaling pathways in glioblastoma using 3D spheroid culture. The study found that inhibiting mTORC2 resulted …

The Musashi (MSI) family of RNA-binding proteins, comprising the two homologs Musashi-1 (MSI1) and Musashi-2 (MSI2), typically regulates translation and is involved in cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. However, the focus of this study is MSI1 because it is highly expressed in neural stem cells in their immature condition. MSI1 is highly enriched in neural precursor cells and develops the central nervous system, it is highly expressed in embryonic, fetal, and adult neural stem cells. The finding that MSI also promotes the replication of the Zika virus, a neurotropic Flavivirus, has triggered further investigations of the biochemical principles behind MSI1-RNA interactions. …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation is research on the development of biosensors using different types of bioreceptors and nanomaterials for the diagnostic application of various diseases. The research is separated into two parts. The first part is about the development of an enzyme-free impedimetric sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the selective determination of L-hydroxyproline (L-hyp), a biomarker of bone diseases. It was found that the use of a mixture containing 3-aminophenylboronic acid (3-APBA) functions as a monomer and o -phenylene diamine (OPD) as a co-monomer can generate the specific MIP through electropolymerization. The detection is based on the increase of …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Vibrio parahaemolyticus causing Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (VPAHPND) has been a major cause of serious shrimp aquaculture economic losses. Moreover, many isolates have exhibited the resistance of various antibiotic drugs. Most recently, bacteriophage or phage, the killer of bacteria, has been gaining interest as an alternative tool to prevent and control pathogens. In this study, we discovered two novel vibriophages - vibriophage Seahorse and vibriophage phiKT1024 – that target various strains of VPAHPND. vibriophage Seahorse and vibriophage phiKT1024 were assigned to the family Siphoviridae and Myoviridae, respectively. Based on the cut-off of genome size that is less than 200 kbp …

Development Of Paper-Based Electrochemical Immunosensor For Sars-Cov-2 Detection, Jutamas Jaewjaroenwatana
Development Of Paper-Based Electrochemical Immunosensor For Sars-Cov-2 Detection, Jutamas Jaewjaroenwatana
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation aimed to develop a simple and low-cost electrochemical sensing platform for detecting SAR-CoV-2 antigen. The proposed sensor combined the innovative disposable paper-based immunosensor and cost-effective plant-based anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody, extracted from Nicotiana benthamiana. The cellulose nanocrystal was modified on screen-printed graphene electrode to provide the COOH functional groups on electrode surface, leading to the high ability for antibody immobilization. The quantification of the presence receptor binding domain (RBD) spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 was performed using differential pulse voltammetry by monitoring the changing current of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox solution. The current change of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- before and after the presence of …
Delayed Lateral Flow Immunoassay For Determination Of Covid-19 Antigen, Pawanrat Srithong
Delayed Lateral Flow Immunoassay For Determination Of Covid-19 Antigen, Pawanrat Srithong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) strip is one of the most attractive biosensing platforms for a point-of-care testing (POCT). However, the generally lack of sensitivity and inability to perform quantitative analysis has consequently limited its outreaches for more challenging applications, where detecting low analytic concentrations is required. To overcome such drawbacks, we propose a facile and straightforward alternative method utilizing a delayed hydrophobic barrier fabricated with trimethylsilyl cellulose (TMSC) to improve its sensitivity. The SARS-CoV-2 spike receptor-binding domain (SARS-CoV-2 SP RBD) antigen was chosen as a model analyte to demonstrate the superior detectability of this scheme. The novel device consists …

Development Of Diagnostic Methods And Epidermiology Of Tuberculosis In Free-Ranging Long-Tailed Macaque Macaca Fascicularis And Rhesus Macaque M. Mulatta In Thailand, Suthirote Meesawat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cross-species infectious disease transmission, especially between humans and wildlife, is increasing during the global warming. Tuberculosis (TB) is an air-borne infectious disease that can be transmitted from humans to non-human primates (NHPs), however, no report of TB prevalence in free ranging NHPs that highly interacted with humans in Thailand was published. Thus, this study was conducted and separated into 3 phases. Phase I, active TB in 1,836 free-ranging macaques including 6 rhesus (Macaca mulatta; Mm), 23 common long-tailed (M. fascicularis fascicularis; Mff), and 3 Burmese long-tailed (M. f. aurea; Mfa) macaque populations throughout Thailand was assesses. Monkeys were captured, anesthetized, …
Glycosylation Of N-Pentenyl Glycoside Activated By Bromodiethylsulfonium Salt, Supanat Buntasana
Glycosylation Of N-Pentenyl Glycoside Activated By Bromodiethylsulfonium Salt, Supanat Buntasana
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
n-Pentenyl glycosides (NPGs) are a significant class of glycosyl donors with dual functionality, serving as both protecting groups for the anomeric hydroxyl and leaving groups upon activation with halonium activators such as N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) or N-iodosuccinimide (NIS). However, the activation of less reactive glycosyl donors with these reagents has proven to be sluggish and inefficient. Recently, bromodiethylsulfonium bromopentachloroantimonate (BDSB) has emerged as a highly efficient brominating reagent that can be readily prepared and purified through crystallization. In this study, we explored the potential of BDSB as a halonium activator for NPGs in chemical glycosylation reactions. By using BDSB as the …

Photo-based identification apps for mobile devices have grown in popularity across many fields of organismal biology. While studies have shown that these apps show promise in fields such as botany and ornithology, there is much skepticism surrounding their accuracy and usefulness in entomology. While providing these apps with photos of high quality will undoubtedly lead to the highest accuracy rates, often users submit photos of average quality, e.g., in poor lighting, out of focus, from far away, etc. To quantify realistic accuracy rates of photo-based insect identification apps, this study analyzed three popular apps – Seek, Picture Insect, and Google …

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic strategy for the management of pest species. It is a framework that relies on scientifically informed decisions to identify and remediate a pest problem in a way that minimizes harm to the environment, human health, and the economy (Dara, 2019). The term pest is broadly defined not just as a nuisance, but as any organism that has detrimental effects to a resource or public health and that exists at a population level that exceeds a threshold of economic damage. This encompasses invertebrates (such as insects, nematodes, and mites), vertebrates, plant pathogens, diseases, and …

A Guide To Agricultural Insect Pests On The East Coast, Devan Mazza-Mcdonald
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
A Guide to Agricultural Insect Pests on the East Coast is a useful resource comprised of fact sheets of ten invasive pests that have been introduced to the United States. It also includes a fact sheet of three important pollinator species that are of economic and environmental importance. Most of the pests I selected are currently an issue in states on the East coast and in some instances, further west as well. Currently, the khapra beetle is not a problem pest in the United States but does have a possibility of becoming an issue, again. The invasive pests I chose …

The Collegiate Black Space: Black College Students’ Use Of New Counter-Spaces For Support, Knowledge Production, And Organizing For Activism, Heather Streets
Doctoral Dissertations
Black collegians who attend historically white institutions continue to struggle with racism, microaggressions, feelings of alienation, minimal or improper advising, and an undue pressure to prove themselves (Bonner, 2010; Feagin & Sikes, 1995; Strayhorn, 2010). These barriers to success result in part due to a lack of support from the colleges and universities that they attend (Allen, 1992; Parker, Puig, Johnson & Anthony, Jr., 2016). With institutional benefits designed to benefit white students over students of color, Black students must find their own alternatives for collaboration and to provide support for their peers.
Many Black spaces can be defined as …
