Relationships Between Water, Sediment, Basal Resources, And Aquatic Insects In A Mine-Contaminated River On A Longitudinal And Habitat Patch Scale, Chelsea A. Wisotzkey
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
It is well established that aqueous exposure and dietary exposure both lead to the accumulation of metals and metalloids in aquatic organisms living in a contaminated environment, but the relative contribution of each remains unclear. To examine how a contamination gradient affects patterns of metal(loid)s among periphyton, BPOM (benthic particulate organic matter), water, and sediment, we collected samples from multiple sites across a 210km stretch of the mine-contaminated Upper Clark Fork River, Montana. To investigate metal(loid) accumulation patterns among basal resources and aquatic insects, we collected samples of periphyton, BPOM, and larval insects from discrete habitat types at a single …
Spermatogenesis Molecular Evolution In Murine Rodents, Emily Emiko Konishi Kopania
Spermatogenesis Molecular Evolution In Murine Rodents, Emily Emiko Konishi Kopania
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Reproductive traits are fascinating from an evolutionary perspective because they are necessary for individuals to produce offspring and increase their evolutionary fitness. Given the essentiality of reproduction to fitness, genes involved in reproduction may be expected to be highly conserved. However, some genes involved in reproduction evolve very rapidly, including many spermatogenesis genes. This rapid evolution may result from intense sexual selection acting on reproductive traits, particularly in species where females mate multiply thus creating the potential for sperm competition. In addition to sexual selection, other evolutionary forces may shape rapid spermatogenesis evolution, including genomic conflict and relaxed pleiotropic constraint …
Spatial Behavior, Foraging, And Population Dynamics Of A Subarctic Ungulate, Elizabeth (Libby) Parr Williamson Ehlers
Spatial Behavior, Foraging, And Population Dynamics Of A Subarctic Ungulate, Elizabeth (Libby) Parr Williamson Ehlers
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The concept of density-dependence is foundational to our understanding of the ecology and management of large herbivores. As the abundance of large herbivores increases, competition for high-quality resources increases and animals select for lower-quality foods potentially resulting in reduced vital rates that cause declines in population growth. What remains unclear is how foraging at finer scales, like the ‘bite’, translates to demography. This is difficult because it’s challenging to scale bite-level foraging to population-levels. I test the fine-scale foraging mechanisms of density dependence in a large subarctic herbivore, Barrenground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti). The nutritional landscape for arctic herbivores is …
The Syndemic Landscape: A New Paradigm For Montana Suicide Prevention Grounded In Agricultural Renewal, Emory Chandler Padgett
The Syndemic Landscape: A New Paradigm For Montana Suicide Prevention Grounded In Agricultural Renewal, Emory Chandler Padgett
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Montana has had one of the highest suicide rates in the nation for half a century, and since 2000, it has risen almost 50%. Despite suicide’s alarming persistence in the state, there has been minimal academic study of suicide or mental health specifically in Montana, so this thesis attempts to answer a few questions: Why does Montana have such a high suicide rate? Is there something culturally, historically, or socially unique about Montana that contributes to suicide? Are current prevention efforts helpful, harmful, or lacking? Could a consideration of culture and land benefit an understanding of suicide in Montana? What …
Invasive Earthworms In The Crown Of The Continent System And Implications For Land Management, Meghan Elizabeth Scott
Invasive Earthworms In The Crown Of The Continent System And Implications For Land Management, Meghan Elizabeth Scott
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The United States contains invasive earthworms originating from Europe and Asia; the majority are European lumbricids. Direct introduction occurs primarily through human activity and, once established, earthworm populations are difficult to address. When exotic earthworms engage in bioturbation, they negatively alter subterranean food webs and nutrient cycling by disrupting soil layering systems. The most prominent form of physical alteration is the change and removal of the topmost organic layer. This disruption is associated with altered nitrogen and carbon cycling, as well as altered forest floor plant communities.
The Crown of the Continent ecosystem is located in southwestern Alberta, southeastern British …
Moccasin Economics: Entangled Museum Stories Of Niitsitapi Women, Labor, And Footwear, Michaela Ann Shifley
Moccasin Economics: Entangled Museum Stories Of Niitsitapi Women, Labor, And Footwear, Michaela Ann Shifley
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation emphasizes how anthropologists can use museum collections as anthropological data banks (Sturtevant 1973) to uncover the unwritten histories of objects, people, and cultures. I show how museum collections are repositories for the untold stories of Native women’s economic histories and how objects embody women’s critical contributions to the economic, spiritual, and cultural survival of their communities throughout time. To reveal the complex, hidden labor processes involved in historical and contemporary moccasin-making, I draw on interviews with contemporary Niitsitapi moccasin-makers, as well as object-based analyses of 109 pairs of moccasins from five museum collections and numerous archival documents and …
A Non-Deterministic Deep Learning Based Surrogate For Ice Sheet Modeling, Hannah Jordan
A Non-Deterministic Deep Learning Based Surrogate For Ice Sheet Modeling, Hannah Jordan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Surrogate modeling is a new and expanding field in the world of deep learning, providing a computationally inexpensive way to approximate results from computationally demanding high-fidelity simulations. Ice sheet modeling is one of these computationally expensive models, the model used in this study currently requires between 10 and 20 minutes to complete one simulation. While this process is adequate for certain applications, the ability to use sampling approaches to perform statistical inference becomes infeasible. This issue can be overcome by using a surrogate model to approximate the ice sheet model, bringing the time to produce output down to a tenth …

Tuberculosis (TB) kills more people each year than any infectious disease worldwide with recent exception of SARS-CoV-2. Though the Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine confers protection against severe extrapulmonary forms of TB, there is no licensed vaccine for the prevention of pulmonary tuberculosis. The strongest correlate of protection against pulmonary tuberculosis is Th1/Th17 biased cell mediated immunity. Several candidates for TB vaccine adjuvants have shown Th1/Th17 polarizing capacity in clinical trials including Mincle agonist trehalose dibehenate (TDB) and TLR4 agonist monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL). Furthermore, combinatorial administration of MPL and TDB formulated in dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DDA) liposomes has been previously reported …
Rethinking Rare: Novel Approaches To Rare Species Monitoring And Conservation, Jessie Deanne Golding
Rethinking Rare: Novel Approaches To Rare Species Monitoring And Conservation, Jessie Deanne Golding
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Conservation of rare species is widely valued and important for ecosystems. Unfortunately, many of the approaches to conserve rare species have been developed with common species (e.g., harvested species) which have larger populations and targeted objectives. Conservation of rare species is difficult in part because of problems created by scarcity and low information. With low information, learning leads to new questions and the utility of information in decisions can quickly become obsolete. Therefore, monitoring strategies that can adapt as well as provide information tailored to relevant decisions are needed. To address rare species monitoring, I developed a long-term monitoring approach …
The Evolution Of Morphological Diversity And Sexual Dimorphism In Stick And Leaf Insects, Romain Pascal Gilbert Eric Boisseau
The Evolution Of Morphological Diversity And Sexual Dimorphism In Stick And Leaf Insects, Romain Pascal Gilbert Eric Boisseau
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
How has the diversity of life forms come to be? This question is at the core of evolutionary biology and can be addressed at different scales: by studying the processes that drive modifications within populations of organisms generation after generation (microevolution), or by investigating patterns of changes on the tree of life over long periods of time (macroevolution). Understanding the ultimate drivers of morphological diversity eventually entails connecting microevolutionary processes with macroevolutionary patterns. My dissertation investigates the diversification of body and egg form and its drivers in a relatively small but particularly diverse insect order: the stick and leaf insects …
The Effects Humidity & Temperature Has On Dna Contamination During Storage, Samantha L. Ramey
The Effects Humidity & Temperature Has On Dna Contamination During Storage, Samantha L. Ramey
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Studies have been conducted on DNA cross-contamination throughout the criminal investigation process in order to evaluation the possibility that DNA from one sample could potentially influence the outcome of another. However, no published studies have examined the potential for contamination during the storage of genetic evidence after samples have been taken from crime scenes or suspects. This study is a continuation of a preliminary project, which examined storage drying time in relation to cross-contamination. The current study tested temperature and humidity for the potential of cross-contamination during storage prior to extraction. Prior to storage, 50 μl of male saliva was …

Grizzly bear attractant policies in Montana: how regulations, recommendations, and resources differ among and between recovery areas
Chairperson or Co-Chairperson: Alexander L. Metcalf & Chad J. Bishop
Abstract
Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) are a keystone species and play an important role in their environment. After near extinction, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service implemented a recovery plan of six recovery zones to increase grizzly populations. Although these efforts allowed grizzly bear numbers to increase, so too have human-grizzly bear conflicts, significantly challenging agencies in charge of bear management. A concern …
Understanding The Underidentification Of Autism In Native American Students, Emily A. Brooke
Understanding The Underidentification Of Autism In Native American Students, Emily A. Brooke
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
School psychologists are called upon to promote nondiscriminatory practices that ensure equity and fairness for all youth, including racially minoritized students. Despite being overrepresented in almost every other disability category of special education, Native American students nationwide are underrepresented within the category of autism. The current study focuses on factors within educators that might lead to the underidentification of Native American students with autism. In alignment with the cultural humility model, and the tripartite model of multicultural competence embedded within it, the current study explored 36 educators’ attitudes, knowledge, and skills as they relate to the culturally responsive assessment of …

Characterizing Riverine Carbon: A Spatiotemporal Study Of Organic And Inorganic Carbon Variability And Evaluation Of Methods For Quantifying Pco2, Fischer Larson Young
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Carbon is a critical component of aquatic ecosystems. For inland waters, carbon is a basal resource for biological communities and is a key component of trophic transfer through ingestion and respiration processes. Additionally, carbon acts as a key biogeochemical tracer that can track chemical, physical, and biological processes from the terrestrial landscape to inland waters to the ocean. Riverine carbon, however, can be challenging to characterize and interpret due to the complexity of its sources and sinks along a riverine continuum. Included in this work are the biogeochemically relevant forms of carbon such as dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), the partial …
Toward A Dialectical Account Of Nature, Georgia Rae Grimm
Toward A Dialectical Account Of Nature, Georgia Rae Grimm
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The protection of nature has been a central aim of environmentalism for well over a century. However, the concept of nature has been subjected to abundant critiques in recent literature, threatening the conceptual tenability of this goal. In this paper, I discuss why I find the concept of nature too valuable to dismiss and offer an account of nature that I believe remedies existent critiques. In Chapter 1, I recount arguments for the protection of nature and illustrate their dualistic underpinnings. In Chapter 2, I discuss issues with dualistic accounts of nature and demonstrate why Steven Vogel’s monistic alternative is …
Applying Resource Selection Probability Function (Rspf) To Understand Floral Resource Use By A Common Bumble Bee, Bombus Vancouverensis, Rebekah Brassfield
Applying Resource Selection Probability Function (Rspf) To Understand Floral Resource Use By A Common Bumble Bee, Bombus Vancouverensis, Rebekah Brassfield
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Bombus) are important pollinators in temperate ecosystems worldwide with seasonal caste variations involving queens, workers, and drones. Like all organisms, they must meet their nutrient requirements for successful growth and development by using several floral resources over time. When resource use is in greater proportion to its abundance on a landscape, that use is considered selective. To examine resource use within the context of abundance, a resource selection probability function (RSPF) was applied to examine floral resource use through a flowering season by a common bumble bee, Bombus vancouverensis. The RSPF framework was used to examine 1) …

We know that the optimal site for DNA extraction from human skeletal remains lies primarily in the petrous portion of the crania, and secondarily in the dental pulp, but we do not know why. As for the optimal location in the post-crania, targeted extraction sites are based on experience or inference, not empirical data. So, where to sample for DNA when only post-cranial elements are available? There are many instances where the petrous and/or teeth are not present or cannot be sampled. The three main goals of the project are 1- develop our foundational knowledge of the underlying cellular and …
Seeding Resilience: An Examination Of The Impacts Of A Seed Saving Network In Western Montana, Christina Leas
Seeding Resilience: An Examination Of The Impacts Of A Seed Saving Network In Western Montana, Christina Leas
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Seed saving, a worldwide practice as old as agriculture, continues even in the context of an increasingly industrialized and globalized agricultural system. While some scholarship has focused on informal seed saving practices that continue to thrive in the global South, few studies have examined the dynamics of these practices in the global North, particularly in the American West. Informal seed saving systems have implications for the resilience of agroecosystems. The concept of resilience has become an important framework for conceptualizing agroecosystems as social-ecological systems, both in scholarship and in policy. However, operationalizing the concept of resilience, particularly in agroecology research, …
Structural Mechanism Of Nuclear Receptor Biased Agonism, Michelle Deanna Nemetchek
Structural Mechanism Of Nuclear Receptor Biased Agonism, Michelle Deanna Nemetchek
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Nuclear receptors are a class of ligand-activated transcription factors that affect gene expression. Pharmaceutical drugs that target nuclear receptors make up (13%) of all therapeutics prescribed in the United States. Unlike signaling pathways, nuclear receptors have a wide variety of binding partners that can bind upon activation of a nuclear receptor to upregulate gene transcription. These binding partner proteins, called “coregulators”, are diverse in function. However, the determinants of their binding to nuclear receptors, and how binding to certain coregulators over others occurs, is not known.
In this work, we examine how ligands create a preference for nuclear receptors to …

The seven transmembrane (7TM) superfamily, also known as G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR), are one of the largest superfamilies in the human genome. With approximately 30% of marketed drugs targeting the GPCRs, these proteins are among the most successful as therapeutic targets. Within the GPCR receptor family there is a subgroup called the metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR). Compounds that target mGluRs are important for the treatment of a variety of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, as well as cancer. The mGluR2 subtype is a target for treatment of anxiety and schizophrenia. Activation of mGluR4 helps to ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s …

Growing Tiny Plants In Common Environments: Assessing Patterns And Mechanisms Of Drought Response Within Species, Mariah Kathryn Mcintosh
Growing Tiny Plants In Common Environments: Assessing Patterns And Mechanisms Of Drought Response Within Species, Mariah Kathryn Mcintosh
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
As climate changes and drought frequency and intensity increases, understanding how plants respond will be critical both for predicting potential for adaptation to future climate and for implementing effective ecosystem conservation and management at a time of rapid change. However, gaps in knowledge about the extent to which species vary in key traits across their ranges and the evolutionary and physiological mechanisms which underlie this variation limits both theoretical understanding and effective management. The broad theme of this dissertation is to address within-species variation both to improve understanding of adaptation to future climate and inform ecosystem conservation and management. The …

Recent technological advancements in computing, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and sensors (RGB, multispectral, thermal, and hyperspectral cameras) can provide new opportunities for land managers and scientists to advance knowledge of fuels and fire behavior and their interactions on the landscape. In this study, imagery from high resolution multispectral cameras mounted on UAS were used to build orthomosaics and point clouds of surface fuelbeds in …
Quantification, Isolation, Characterization, And Biogeography Of Thermoacidophilic Bacteria From Mesophilic Soils, Margaux Karp
Quantification, Isolation, Characterization, And Biogeography Of Thermoacidophilic Bacteria From Mesophilic Soils, Margaux Karp
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Many thermoacidophilic bacterial species thrive in hot springs, fumaroles, and geothermally heated soils. These habitats are globally distributed but often small in size and located distantly from similar habitats, and therefore the biogeography of thermoacidophiles may be similar to island biogeography of plants and animals. Little is known about dispersal of thermoacidophiles. In this study I aimed to quantify, isolate, and characterize thermoacidophilic bacteria from non-permissive habitats. I also used genetic approaches to compare these isolates to thermoacidophilic bacteria from permissive habitats to provide insight to their biogeography.
To determine if I could enrich thermoacidophiles from non-permissive habitats, and if …

Drought, Tree Mortality, And Regeneration In Northen California, Sophia Lb Lemmo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The 2012-2016 California drought was the most severe in the state’s recorded history, contributing to the death of millions of trees. While the effects of this drought on forests are relatively well studied in the central and southern Sierra Nevada, less is known about its effects on the heavily timbered and diverse forests of northern California. Through sampling 54 0.25 ha plots in northern California, this study compared tree mortality and regeneration patterns before, during, and after California’s most recent record-setting drought. This study evaluated 1) the influence of habitat and competitive covariates on mortality and regeneration trends using ridge …
