Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill Jan 2022

Evaluating The Bude Water Vole Reintroduction Project And The Factors Which Determined The Successes And Failures, Teagen Louise Hill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Water voles (Arvicola amphibius), once a widespread species in Britain, became the fastest declining British mammal due to habitat fragmentation and North American mink (Neovison vison) introduction. Bude catchment (North Cornwall, England) was the location of the first water vole release project in Cornwall and has been closely monitored since the first releases in 2013. Latrines, being the most accurate field sign, were recorded twice a year, alongside burrows and feeding signs, giving an indication to the presence of voles in and around the release locations. In the Bude release catchment the presence of water voles was strongly correlated with …

The Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Two Endangered Pit Vipers (Bothriechis Marchi And Cerrophidion Wilsoni) Within Cusuco National Park, Honduras, Debbie Starbuck

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The current extinction rate is being increasingly recognised as an escalating issue, with observations still indicating that humans are the leading cause of a sixth mass extinction. Cloud forests in particular are home to a variety of threatened species, however, many of these forests are highly fragmented resulting in many species and populations existing in isolation. These forests have become centres of endemism for many species, leading to a high representation within global biodiversity hotspots and “irreplaceable” protected areas. This study primarily investigates the genetic diversity and distribution of two recently re-classified, sympatric pit vipers (Bothriechis marchi and Cerrophidion wilsoni) …

The Application Of Habitat Suitability Modelling To Mapping Vme Distribution In The Deep Sea To Inform Spatial Management, Kyran Graves Jan 2022

The Application Of Habitat Suitability Modelling To Mapping Vme Distribution In The Deep Sea To Inform Spatial Management, Kyran Graves

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

As the development of new technologies continues, so do industrial activities. As a result, such industries can extract natural resources and use the marine environment at deeper and deeper depths, for example, fisheries, oil and gas, submarine cabling, and – the latest emergence – deep-sea mining. Despite these developments, the majority of the deep ocean, including national waters and the High Seas, remains unmapped. The absence of data across large swathes of the deep sea means that conducting adequate environmental impact assessments when new activities are proposed is difficult, and what data is available is often sparse. Predictive habitat models …

A Biologically Meaningful Evaluation Of Phenological Responses To Climate Change, Nicola Mansfield Jan 2022

A Biologically Meaningful Evaluation Of Phenological Responses To Climate Change, Nicola Mansfield

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Phenological change is widely regarded as an important biological indicator of contemporary climate change. Increasing global temperatures have been identified as driving changes in the timing of key life-cycle events across a wide range of organisms. Estimates of phenological change are often based on single measure of phenology, such as the date of the first flower to bloom or the first migrant of the season to arrive. However, this approach is unlikely to be representative of the population as a whole and ignores important information regarding, for example, the duration of the phenomenon, its temporal skew, and its shape. A …

Synthesis Of Functional Chalcone Library For Use In Aza- Dipyrromethene Dye Systems, Kendal Crawley Jan 2022

Synthesis Of Functional Chalcone Library For Use In Aza- Dipyrromethene Dye Systems, Kendal Crawley

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade, Aza-Bodipy dyes (ADPs), a derivative of the extensively studied BF2-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), have become a growing field of research due to their unique photophysical properties, high yielding synthesis, and relative stability. They possess a unique spectral window of 600 to 750 nm which is the red to near-IR region, evidenced by the blue color of many of these dyes. Increasing interest in these dyes is due to this near-IR window which is important for many applications.1-4 ADP chromophores also have a common core motif to that of phthalocyanines which allow for coordination at their …

Georgia High School Counselor Perceptions Of Careers In The Agricultural Field, Meredith Arrington Jan 2022

Georgia High School Counselor Perceptions Of Careers In The Agricultural Field, Meredith Arrington

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The word “farmer” somehow still evokes that stereotypical image of an old man in overalls wearing a straw hat and holding a pitchfork. Agriculture is our nation’s largest employer, but agriculture careers still have that stigma of being backbreaking manual labor that yields a low income and is reserved for those less educated or uneducated. At the secondary education level, this type of skewed perception by school counselors can have an impact on their abilities to counsel students who are seeking college or career advice. To meet the demands of our growing population, agricultural careers have evolved to become highly …

Effects Of Cannabinoid Supplementation On Weaning And Transportation Stress In Beef Calves, Savannah Kaitlyn Austin Jan 2022

Effects Of Cannabinoid Supplementation On Weaning And Transportation Stress In Beef Calves, Savannah Kaitlyn Austin

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Transportation stress is a major factor increasing the risk of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in young calves. Bovine respiratory disease is currently the most economically important disease affecting the cattle industry, costing producers millions of dollars annually. Cannabidiol (CBD) has shown therapeutic benefits in other species, making it a potential tool to use as a supplement to reduce transportation and weaning stress in calves. However, little information is available on cannabinoid bioavailability and disposition of bioactive residue in livestock tissues. The objectives of these studies were to evaluate effective dosage rates of a cannabinoid gel on beef cattle and to …

Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore Jan 2022

Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic activities have led to degradation in streams throughout much of Western North America. In particular, cattle grazing has led to a loss of riparian vegetation resulting in higher water temperatures and an increase in nutrient runoff. The effects of degradation on food quality and quantity for aquatic consumers could have large implications for stream communities. Since omnivores feed at multiple trophic levels, they may be resilient to altered food webs, which may allow them to stabilize communities in degraded environments where resources have been reduced. To test the hypothesis that omnivores positively impact community stability in degraded conditions, I …

Fish Communities Respond To Hydrology And Elevation In Restored Western Kentucky Wetlands, Lucas Zuklic

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) is designed to restore wetland ecological function and wildlife benefits; however, these projects rarely monitor biological responses. The objectives of our study were to (1) identify environmental factors that were the most important in determining wetland fish community composition, (2) examine the influence of the environment on specific groups of fish (large-river fishes and Kentucky Species of Greatest Conservation Need (KY-SGCN) wetland fishes), and (3) compare fish community composition and diversity in wetlands of different condition (e.g., degraded, restored, and reference). From April 2019 to August 2020, monthly electrofishing surveys were performed in degraded …

Data were collected from archival evaluations, from a private practice, of adults ages 18-69 years old. Two independent T-test analyses were conducted to determine the mean difference between violent-offense-charged and nonviolent-offense-charged …

The Role Of Rumination In Predicting Sleep Quality, Christina Harper Jan 2022

The Role Of Rumination In Predicting Sleep Quality, Christina Harper

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown links between rumination and sleep quality, giving some evidence to coping mechanisms such as mindfulness and alcohol use that may affect rumination and sleep quality (Crain et al., 2017; Lydon et al., 2016). This study aimed to explore how rumination, mindfulness, alcohol use, and alcohol-related consequences contribute to sleep quality. Specifically, this study hypothesized that rumination, mindfulness, and alcohol use would predict sleep quality. Additionally, this study hypothesized that alcohol use, mindfulness, and alcohol related consequences would moderate the relationship between rumination and sleep quality. Participants completed the study online and were recruited from both a university …

Beyond The Narrow Harvard Model Of Legal Education: Restoring Legal Education According To The Proposals Of Valentin Tomberg, Brian Mccall Jan 2022

Beyond The Narrow Harvard Model Of Legal Education: Restoring Legal Education According To The Proposals Of Valentin Tomberg, Brian Mccall

Faculty Articles

Professor Mark Jones has argued that legal education needs to be “reliberalized” by returning to a state in which “all law students receive a basic minimum exposure to the general subject areas of legal history, jurisprudence, and comparative law, as well as to the general subject areas of international/trans-national/global legal studies . . . .” Jones’s call to restore the cultural dimensions has recently received an additional source of strength. The recent publication of an English translation of Dr. Valentin Tomberg’s doctoral dissertation for the first time, under the title The Art of the Good: The Regeneration of Fallen Jurisprudence, …

Submerged Independent Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Jennifer Nou Jan 2022

Submerged Independent Agencies, Brian D. Feinstein, Jennifer Nou

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Independent agencies are in the judicial crosshairs. Scholars criticize their efficacy—while still puzzling over how to define the form. By and large, this attention focuses on the top of the agency hierarchy, the extent to which agency heads are insulated from presidential control. What this perspective misses, however, is that power is also exercised by tenure-protected civil servants below. This phenomenon exists not because Congress has delegated them authority, but because executive branch actors have. Consequently, there exists another species of independent agency that requires a reckoning: call them “submerged independent agencies.” These entities are “agencies” because they wield discretionary …

Improving Neurorepair In Stroke Brain Through Endogenous Neurogenesis-Enhancing Drugs, Kuo-Jen Wu, Seongjin Yu, Jea-Young Lee, Barry Hoffer, Yun Wang Jan 2022

Improving Neurorepair In Stroke Brain Through Endogenous Neurogenesis-Enhancing Drugs, Kuo-Jen Wu, Seongjin Yu, Jea-Young Lee, Barry Hoffer, Yun Wang

Neurosurgery and Brain Repair Faculty Publications

Stroke induces not only cell death but also neurorepair. De novo neurogenesis has been found in the subventricular zone of the adult mammalian brain days after stroke. Most of these newly generated cells die shortly after the insult. Recent studies have shown that pharmacological manipulation can improve the survival of endogenous neuroprogenitor cells and neural regeneration in stroke rats. As these drugs target the endogenous reparative processes that occur days after stroke, they may provide a prolonged window for stroke therapy. Here, we discuss endogenous neurogenesis-enhancing drugs and review the general status of stroke therapeutics in evaluating the field of …

The scale of the Deepwater Horizon disaster was and is unprecedented: geographic extent, pollutant amount, countermeasure scope, and of most relevance to this Research Topic issue, range of ecotypes affected. These ecotypes include coastal/nearshore, continental shelf, deep benthic, and open-ocean domains, the last of which is the subject of this synthesis. The open-ocean ecotype comprises ~90% of the volume of the Gulf of Mexico. The exact percentage of this ecotype contaminated with toxins is unknown due to its three-dimensional nature and dynamics, but estimates suggest that the footprint encompassed most of its eastern half. Further, interactions between the water column …

In the Southern Ocean, several zooplankton taxonomic groups, euphausiids, copepods, salps and pteropods, are notable because of their biomass and abundance and their roles in maintaining food webs and ecosystem structure and function, including the provision of globally important ecosystem services. These groups are consumers of microbes, primary and secondary producers, and are prey for fishes, cephalopods, seabirds, and marine mammals. In providing the link between microbes, primary production, and higher trophic levels these taxa influence energy flows, biological production and biomass, biogeochemical cycles, carbon flux and food web interactions thereby modulating the structure and functioning of ecosystems. Additionally, Antarctic …
