Stomach Contents And Stable Isotope Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Shifts And Spatial Variability In Brama Australis Diet, Sebastian A. Klarian, Eric T. Schultz, María Francisca Hernández, Juan Antonio Valdes, Francisco Fernandoy, Mónica Barros, Sergio Neira, Hugo Arancibia Jan 2022

Stomach Contents And Stable Isotope Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Shifts And Spatial Variability In Brama Australis Diet, Sebastian A. Klarian, Eric T. Schultz, María Francisca Hernández, Juan Antonio Valdes, Francisco Fernandoy, Mónica Barros, Sergio Neira, Hugo Arancibia

EEB Articles

Many marine fisheries rely on production and energy flow in the pelagic zone, thus sustainable management of exploited pelagic fishes benefits from insight into temporal, spatial and ontogenetic variability in the trophic ecology of these species. Here we analyze stomach contents and stable isotopes to reveal spatial variability (focusing on two fishing grounds, north and south of an oceanographic barrier in the Pacific Ocean) and ontogenetic changes (contrasting immature and mature) in Southern Ray’s Bream (Brama australis) diet composition in Chilean waters. Stomach contents analysis indicated that euphausiids were predominant components of the diet in both fishing grounds and ontogenetic …

Seasonal Reproductive Allocation In Landlocked Alewife Alosa Pseudoharengus, In The Context Of Niche Construction And Eco-Evolutionary Feedbacks, Foivos Mouchlianitis, Eric T. Schultz, Kostas Ganias Jan 2022

Seasonal Reproductive Allocation In Landlocked Alewife Alosa Pseudoharengus, In The Context Of Niche Construction And Eco-Evolutionary Feedbacks, Foivos Mouchlianitis, Eric T. Schultz, Kostas Ganias

EEB Articles

The bidirectional dynamics between species and their biotic and abiotic environments, known as eco-evolutionary feedbacks, may shift the direction of evolution and alter the ecological role of species. Alewife, Alosa pseudoharengus, is an exemplary species to study reciprocal feedbacks between ecology and evolution, owing to repeated independent derivations of a landlocked life history from an ancestral anadromous form. In this study we analysed the reproductive allocation during the spawning season in a landlocked Alewife population in the context of eco-evolutionary feedbacks. We also compared our findings with previous results from a neighbouring anadromous population of the species. Similarities were found …

Abortion And Safe Haven Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

Abortion And Safe Haven Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

Notwithstanding the assertions of the State of Mississippi, of one amicus, and of Justice Amy Coney Barrett in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, abortion laws and safe haven laws are oil and vinegar. Not only do they not mix, but safe haven laws in some ways support the continuing validity of the balance on individual privacy interests and legitimate governmental interests struck in the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion. Both abortion availability laws and safe haven laws advance the interests of women who choose not to parent children within their existing family structures. But safe haven laws, …

Who Is A Parent? Intrastate And Interstate Differences, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

Who Is A Parent? Intrastate And Interstate Differences, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

When the parental status of one or more people involved in a civil action is contested in a court in the United States, the need for a legal parentage determination arises. In these contests, legal parentage can differ from personally and/or publicly perceived parentage. Legal parentage can also differ by context, as between child custody and child support settings. Legal parentage most often varies by context in a single American state where the purposes behind varying parentage laws differ, as where biology is key in one setting and parental like acts are key in another setting.

Parental status laws are …

Choosing Parentage Laws In Multistate Conduct Cases, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

Choosing Parentage Laws In Multistate Conduct Cases, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

This paper explores choosing parentage laws in multistate conduct cases in varying contexts, including cases involving parentage for childcare purpose and for such nonchildcare purposes as tort, probate and child support. Choice of law may be compelled by Full Faith and Credit. Where there is no compulsion, the forum choice of law rules typically apply. These rules, of course, can vary in a single state between contexts, as with parenthood in childcare and in probate settings. These rules can also vary between states in a single context, as with parentage in tort settings. The paper seeks to provide guidance to …

American Constitutions And Artificial Insemination Births, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

American Constitutions And Artificial Insemination Births, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

Childcare parentage issues arising from assisted reproduction births are subject to constitutional guidance, including due process, equal protection, and privacy dictates. Constitutional rights, however, sometimes go unrecognized in assisted reproduction laws, particularly for same sex couples, wed and unwed, as well as for single women. Upon a brief review of contemporary American state assisted reproduction laws, current and future constitutional precedents are explored. This analysis shows that constitutional, as well as public policy, reforms are particularly needed for same-sex female couples and single women employing assisted reproduction as intended parents.

Diy Artificial Insemination: The Not-So-Great Gatsby, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

Diy Artificial Insemination: The Not-So-Great Gatsby, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

Increasingly, intended parentage by female couples, married and unmarried, and by single women, is pursued via do-it-yourself (DIY) artificial insemination (AI) that utilizes sperm donors (who may be unknown). A recent ruling illustrates the difficulties arising from incomplete AI statutes. In Gatsby v. Gatsby in 2021, the Idaho Supreme Court determined legal parentage for a child born via AI to a married female couple who later divorced. The Gatsby ruling is troublesome on several fronts. Its problems highlight the difficulties facing intended childcare parents employing AI in the United States, especially for those without significant financial resources and women, coupled …

Expanding State Parent Registry Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2022

Expanding State Parent Registry Laws, Jeffrey A. Parness

College of Law Faculty Publications

As with state recognized voluntary acknowledgements of parentage (VAPs) and state recognized assisted reproduction pacts (SRARPs) on childcare parentage for future or current children, state parent registries (PRs), often labeled putative paternity registries or putative father registries, embody declarations of expecting or current legal parenthood. Yet declarations on children in PRs often involve unilateral assertions, unlike dual parenthood declarations in VAPs. Actual parenthood under law for many PR declarants is never recognized because there are no simultaneous assertions by a second expecting or existing legal parent on the declarant’s parenthood, as with an assertion by an expecting or existing birth …

When A Statute Comes With A User Manual: Reconciling Textualism And Uniform Acts, Gregory A. Elinson, Robert H. Sitkoff Jan 2022

When A Statute Comes With A User Manual: Reconciling Textualism And Uniform Acts, Gregory A. Elinson, Robert H. Sitkoff

College of Law Faculty Publications

This Article develops an interpretive theory for statutes that originate as Uniform Acts promulgated by the Uniform Law Commission. Although overlooked in the literature on statutory interpretation, state-enacted Uniform Acts are ubiquitous. They shape our life cycles—governing marriage, parentage, divorce, and death—and structure trillions of dollars in daily commercial transactions.

Largely focusing on textualism, today’s dominant form of statutory interpretation, we analyze the interpretive consequences of two unusual features of state-enacted Uniform Acts. First, the text of every Uniform Act directs courts to interpret it to “promote uniformity.” Second, each provision is accompanied by an official explanatory comment, analogous to …

Long Island Horseshoe Crab Network Annual Inventory Report, Cercom, Molloy University, John Tanacredi Ph.D., Kyle F. Maurelli

CERCOM Reports

CERCOM monitors 115 beach locations from Brooklyn – Montauk during the optimal Limulus Polyphemus breeding season. These beach surveys take place for approximately 15 weeks, ranging from May - August. These beach locations are marked specifically using GPS coordinates, to assure the same location is visited each year. Students and volunteers are required to attend a HSC Survey training orientation led by CERCOM’s research assistant, Mr. Kyle Maurelli. Surveying is done around tide and moon cycles (New/Full Moon). Each site takes about 1-2 hours and data is recorded along an approximate 1 mile distance. Walking along the water’s edge the …

Ubiquitylation Of Unphosphorylated C-Myc By Novel E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Scffbxl8, Sagar Bajpai Jan 2022

Ubiquitylation Of Unphosphorylated C-Myc By Novel E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Scffbxl8, Sagar Bajpai

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Overexpression of c-myc via increased transcription or decreased protein degradation is common to many cancer etiologies. C-myc protein degradation is mediated by ubiquitin-dependent degradation and this ubiquitylation is regulated by several E3 ligases. The primary regulator is Fbxw7 which binds to a phospho-degron within c-myc. Here, we identify a new E3 ligase for c-myc, Fbxl8 (F-box and Leucine Rich Repeat Protein 8), as an adaptor component of the SCF (Skp1-Cullin1-F-box protein) ubiquitin ligase complex, for selective c-myc degradation. SCFFbxl8 binds and ubiquitylates c-myc, independent of phosphorylation revealing that it regulates a pool of c-myc distinct from SCFFbxw7. Reduction of Fbxl8 …

Teacher Perceptions Of Technology-Enhanced, Collaborative, Project-Based Learning On Students In Mixed-Ability Classrooms, Amy Lauren Pierson Jan 2022

Teacher Perceptions Of Technology-Enhanced, Collaborative, Project-Based Learning On Students In Mixed-Ability Classrooms, Amy Lauren Pierson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The skill of collaboration is fundamental for every student as a future participant of a global society. Students with learning disabilities feel excluded amongst peers in a traditional classroom setting, specifically elementary students with learning disabilities in the area of collaboration. The overall purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore elementary teacher perceptions of how students in mixed-ability classrooms collaborate using technology in a project-based learning (PBL) environment. Vygotsky’s social constructivism theory informed this study by providing a framework for learning in social groups, specifically collaborative learning practices in a PBL environment. The research question in this study …

Staff Perspectives Of Children With Challenging Behaviors In A Preschool Setting, Tamika D. Schaffer Jan 2022

Staff Perspectives Of Children With Challenging Behaviors In A Preschool Setting, Tamika D. Schaffer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Preschool children exhibiting challenging behaviors are expelled or suspended instead of identified, evaluated, and linked to appropriate services for their needs. This qualitative case study explored preschool teacher, administrator, and technical assistant perspectives related to identifying, evaluating, and linking to appropriate services children with challenging behaviors which the research questions focused on. The research frameworks were the ecological systems theory and assertive behavioral model. Purposeful sampling was used to select 10 teachers, two administrators, and two technical assistants who worked in a preschool center for at least 1 year and experienced one or more past incidents where they had to …

Anxiety, Depression, And Sexual Minority Identity Among First Responders, Kayla Soohy Jan 2022

Anxiety, Depression, And Sexual Minority Identity Among First Responders, Kayla Soohy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research indicates that first responders tend to experience high levels of anxiety and depression due to unique stressors associated with first responder employment. This increased risk level for mental health issues among first responders can be exacerbated by the addition of psychosocial stressors. The influence of interpersonal or intrapersonal factors, such as sexual minority identity, on the mental health issues experienced by first responders has remained relatively unexplored. The purpose of this research study was to explore the relationship between type of first responder, sexual identity, anxiety, and depression via a framework rooted in minority stress theory. Data were gathered …

An Educational Program For Nurses To Incorporate Spiritual Care Into Clinical Practice, Alicia J. Thomas Jan 2022

An Educational Program For Nurses To Incorporate Spiritual Care Into Clinical Practice, Alicia J. Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Spiritual well-being is associated with several positive outcomes, including a greater tolerance of the emotional and physical demands of illness. Spiritual care is a basic element of holistic nursing, yet nurses generally lack spiritual care knowledge and abilities and are often unable to satisfy patients’ spiritual care needs. Therefore, nurses are in urgent need of relevant training to enhance their abilities to provide patients with spiritual care. Evidence-based education was lacking at the project site, a privately owned long-term care facility. Primary care attention was focused on the patients’ physical care; however, insufficient attention was being paid to spiritual care, …

Evangelical Families’ Experiences Of Mental Health Challenges, Elom Togbi-Wonyo Jan 2022

Evangelical Families’ Experiences Of Mental Health Challenges, Elom Togbi-Wonyo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Evangelical Christians with mental distress in the family face stigma, adverse psychological and physical health effects, and financial hardships. They often mistrust professional counselors, preventing them from accessing much-needed support. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to gain knowledge about Evangelical Christians’ everyday life with a family member experiencing mental distress and their perceptions of the faith community’s responses. After collecting accounts from eight participants through one-on-one interviews, Giorgi’s psychological phenomenological method was used for data analysis, resulting in the identification of seven themes and 19 subthemes. The results showed that living with a family member experiencing mental …
