Compulsory Licensing Of Patents During Pandemics, Sapna Kumar Jan 2022

Compulsory Licensing Of Patents During Pandemics, Sapna Kumar

Connecticut Law Review

Wealthy countries with major pharmaceutical industries have historically supported strong patent rights and opposed temporarily abrogating them—even to save lives. However, as drug shortages have become commonplace due to COVID-19, governments have begun reassessing their views. The European Union and various countries have issued new policies and passed legislation facilitating their ability to provide drugs to their citizens for the duration of the pandemic. They have signaled a willingness to do so through “compulsory licensing,” in which the government issues a license to a third party to produce a patented invention without the patent holder’s permission and pays the patent …

New Records Of Digenetic Trematodes Infecting Melanoides Tuberculata (O.F. Müller, 1774) In Florida, Usa, Lori R. Tolley-Jordan, Michael A. Chadwick, Jimmy K. Triplett

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Melanoides tuberculata is a well-known invasive, freshwater snail and intermediate host for many species of parasitic trematodes. Despite being well established in Florida’s freshwater systems, little work has been conducted to document the associated trematodes of the snails. Live snails were collected from 11 sites from 25 locations sampled across the state of Florida, USA of which individuals from six sites were found to be infected with trematodes. Gross morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis using 18S rRNA and ITS2 gene regions, were used to identify these trematode taxa. Snails infected with the gill flukes, Centrocestus formosanus and Haplorchis pumilio (Heterophyidae) …

Assessing The Effects Of Age And Sex On Mtbi Severity, Jennifer Harrell Jan 2022

Assessing The Effects Of Age And Sex On Mtbi Severity, Jennifer Harrell

Honors Academy

“Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) accounts for 70-90% of TBIs recorded in the last two decades. Subjection to continued mTBIs could result in severe comorbidities appearing years later. Current research on mTBI shows significant male sex and single age skew in murine animal models. Using the Missouri Blast Model, mice were inflicted with mTBI and evaluated using standard behavior tests and a novel method not previously used for mTBI with an open blast model. With both methods, a larger clinical difference was found between age groups than sex. We were also able to show that the novel tracking method was …

High School Students’ Nature Of Science Understandings And Scientific Argumentation Skills In The Context Of Socioscientific Issues, John Michael Williams

Dissertations and Theses

Today’s high school graduates are required to digest and interpret massive amounts of information related to science. National standards documents in science education promote the development of skills to effectively evaluate the credibility of scientific information, with the goal of producing citizens capable of making scientifically informed decisions after graduation. These skills include the ability to make reasoned arguments based on evidence (Scientific Argumentation [SA]) and an understanding of how scientific knowledge is generated, validated, and communicated (Nature of Science [NOS]). While the importance of these skills is not in dispute, the few studies that have examined the connection between …

Cell Mechanics In Cardiovascular Disease And Electrospun Scaffold For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Alex Park Rickel Jan 2022

Cell Mechanics In Cardiovascular Disease And Electrospun Scaffold For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Alex Park Rickel

Dissertations and Theses

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis, one of the primary CVDs, is characterized as a chronic inflammatory disease. In the initial stages of atherosclerosis, there is a buildup of cholesterol and lipoproteins that triggers monocytes to enter the arterial wall and begin accumulating lipids. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) begin to detach and migrate from the media toward the intima in a process known as phenotypic switching. Phenotypic switching transitions VSMCs from a contractile to synthetic phenotype and they gain the capacity for migration, proliferation, and secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. Synthetic VSMCs experience …

Encouraging Persistence Among Native American Nursing Students By Fostering Cultural Identity Development At A Predominantly White University, Valeriah Rose Bi Eagle Jan 2022

Encouraging Persistence Among Native American Nursing Students By Fostering Cultural Identity Development At A Predominantly White University, Valeriah Rose Bi Eagle

Dissertations and Theses

There has been a calling to promote diversity in the healthcare workforce to alleviate the health problems that currently exist among the Native American population. Minorities are disproportionately represented in the nursing workforce (Beard, 2014), especially Native Americans. Increasing the number of Native American nurses in the healthcare workforce has been found to significantly reduce these health disparities (Eddie, 2018; Eschiti, 2004; Gebbie et al., 2003), supporting the need for more Native American nursing students to graduate from college. There has been little research regarding the implications of cultural identity experienced by Native American nursing college students in higher education …

Limiting The Boundaries Of Assisted Reproductive Technology And Physiological Autonomy, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2022

Limiting The Boundaries Of Assisted Reproductive Technology And Physiological Autonomy, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

This essay examines, critically, the wide successes of assisted reproductive technology (ART). With these successes have come concerns regarding its potential advancement of the boundaries of fecundity and of new levels of physiological freedom. One particular advancement involves efforts to utilize a phenomenon of nature termed parthenogenesis, or asexual reproduction. The potential for adapting this occurrence as a form of assisted reproduction is of particular interest for members of the LGBTQ community, holding great promise for embryo research and regenerative medicine. Parthenogenetic embryos could be derived from unfertilized human eggs and, thus, blunt--if not resolve--ethical concerns over experimentation on human …

The New Disestablishments, Marc O. Degirolami Jan 2022

The New Disestablishments, Marc O. Degirolami

Scholarly Articles

This Article attempts to map out a set of social and legal phenomena-features of what it calls the new establishment, responses to it, and possible implications of dissenting new disestablishments-without offering an evaluation either of the new establishment or the new disestablishments. That is, this Article tries to point out the structural conditions within which claims of religious free exercise are now situated, but it does not opine on the morality or justice of the general social structure or the dissenting views that it discusses. Like everyone, I have my views about these subjects, but I have tried, as much …

"Reeling In" Juvenile Sportfish Through Coastal Habitat Restoration: Population, Community, And Trophic Responses In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Jennifer Loch Jan 2022

"Reeling In" Juvenile Sportfish Through Coastal Habitat Restoration: Population, Community, And Trophic Responses In The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, Jennifer Loch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Coastal habitats provide crucial nursery habitat for predatory fishes, but they are in decline worldwide, impacting economically important fisheries. Habitat restoration can simultaneously mitigate the effects of habitat loss and benefit predators (e.g., sportfish), although this relationship is understudied. Here, the response of juvenile sportfish to oyster reef and living shoreline restoration is compared to controls in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida prior to and following restoration for up to three years through examination of community (diversity, assemblage), population (abundance), biometric (size, body condition), ontogenetic, and trophic (gut contents, stable isotopes) dynamics. Stable isotopes were used to quantify dietary history, …

Impacts Of Covid-19 On Health Promotion Within Higher Education: Exploring Organizational Resilience, Maureen Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The close proximity of students learning, living, socializing and working on university and college campuses presents a unique setting to understand organization responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. This concurrent, mixed methods qualitative study explored how one institution of higher education demonstrated resilience and how its health promotion activities pivoted and adjusted to reduce virus transmission and maintain safety while continuing to promote learning and education. Based on the organizational resilience conceptualization developed by Duchek (2020), data collection methods combined individual interviews with university leaders, self-interview and reflection, and a review of organization documents a connection between health promotion, organization resilience, …

Electronic And Optoelectronic Properties Of Two-Dimensional Heterostructures For Next-Generation Device Technologies, Jesse Thompson Jan 2022

Electronic And Optoelectronic Properties Of Two-Dimensional Heterostructures For Next-Generation Device Technologies, Jesse Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Since monolayer graphene was isolated in 2004, there has been significant interest in integrating layered materials into innovative device designs and hybrid materials to help solve pressing technological challenges. This is partially because they can typically be thinned to a two-dimensional (2D) form without suffering from roughness-induced scattering and can exhibit thickness-dependent variations in properties such as their energy band gap. This dissertation reports on investigations of electronic and optoelectronic device physics in 2D material heterostructures. The investigation of electronic device physics focuses on the interface between 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and gold (Au), which behaves as a resistive switching …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Stem Identity Experiences Of Women Stem Faculty Who Obtain Federal Grants, Nicole Whetstine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how STEM identity development influences the experiences of women STEM faculty who obtained federal grant funding. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with ten full-time women faculty in STEM employed at U.S. postsecondary institutions who were or were previously lead investigator on a federal grant. Herlihy and Campbell's (2018) socio-cultural-STEM identity theoretical framework informed the data analysis. Findings from the study revealed four primary ways in which participants were positively influenced in STEM including: (a) having supportive interactions with others; (b) being encouraged by others; (c) finding connections with …

Machine Learning In Fiber Optics, Xiaowen Hu Jan 2022

Machine Learning In Fiber Optics, Xiaowen Hu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Recent burgeoning machine learning has revolutionized our ways of looking at the world. Being extraordinarily good at pattern recognition, machine learning has been widely applied to many fields to solve challenging problems. This dissertation demonstrates the applications of machine learning on scanning-free fiber-optic imaging systems (FOISs), and on the design of anti-resonant fibers. In the first part, we propose a semi-supervised learning framework called the adaptive inverse mapping (AIP) to stabilize the imaging performance through multimode fibers (MMFs). We show that if the state of the MMF is traced closely, the output images can be used as probes to correct …

Population Persistence And Disease Invasion In Heterogenous Networks, Poroshat Yazdanbakhshghahyazi Jan 2022

Population Persistence And Disease Invasion In Heterogenous Networks, Poroshat Yazdanbakhshghahyazi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The problem of understanding how biological species and infectious diseases can persist and spread in heterogeneous networks has brought a wide attention, recently highlighted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This dissertation investigates the connection between the structures of heterogeneous networks and population persistence/disease invasion. To do so, we propose a new index for network heterogeneity by employing the Laplacian matrix of population dispersal and its corresponding group inverse. The network growth rate and reproduction number can be evaluated using the network average and the network heterogeneity index as the first and second order approximation, respectively. We also illustrate the impact …

Therefore, the current dissertation is focusing on developing high resolution crash severity models based on medical professional driver injury severity reported using Abbreviated Injury Scale for eight body regions. The dissertation focused on developing a disaggregate injury severity modeling framework that can enhance the estimation accuracy of independent variable impacts on severity. Within this broad research vision, the dissertation has multiple objectives. First, a joint random parameters multivariate model structure with as many dimensions as …

Complex Dna Mixture Deconvolution By Single Cell Genomics: Direct Physical Cell Subsampling And High Sensitivity Dna Typing, Kaitlin Huffman Jan 2022

Complex Dna Mixture Deconvolution By Single Cell Genomics: Direct Physical Cell Subsampling And High Sensitivity Dna Typing, Kaitlin Huffman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Biological evidence is often found at crime scenes and can comprise of DNA from the victim(s) and perpetrator(s) to a crime as well as from individuals with no direct relationship to the incident. This can complicate analysis as DNA mixtures are one of the more difficult sources of biological evidence to interpret. Probabilistic genotyping (PG) has greatly aided in mixture analysis. However, even with PG, standard bulk mixture approaches do not always result in probative results as allele overlap, artifacts, or low-level minor contributors inevitably cause genotype information loss. Therefore, deconvolution of forensic DNA mixtures into their individual component DNA …

Combating Incels: Addressing Misogynistic Violence As An Early Warning Indicator Of Escalating Violence And Armed Conflict, Christie J. Edwards Jan 2022

Combating Incels: Addressing Misogynistic Violence As An Early Warning Indicator Of Escalating Violence And Armed Conflict, Christie J. Edwards

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

The spectrum of misogynistic violence between incels ("involuntary celibates"), non-State armed groups, and armed forces using extreme violence against women is based around the desire to restore "traditional" gender norms of male dominance, maintain systemic inequality between men and women, and often manifest in gender-based hate crimes before escalating into community violence and armed conflict. Governments and policy makers must dismantle structural inequalities and discrimination against women, as well as ensure effective criminal justice responses to gender-based hate crimes and all other forms of violence against women in order to address and prevent violence and armed conflict, as well as …

Gender And Counterterrorism: How The United States' Underestimation Of Women's Roles In Violent Extremism Threatens National Security, Brianna N. Bulski Jan 2022

Gender And Counterterrorism: How The United States' Underestimation Of Women's Roles In Violent Extremism Threatens National Security, Brianna N. Bulski

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Discourse surrounding conflict and terrorism is often confined by gendered binaries which conflate masculinity with violence and femininity with peace and passivity. The social adoption of these archetypes has encouraged policy makers and security officials to paint men as combatants or orchestrators of extremism, while women are thought of as mere collaterals to war. However, the number of women involved in extremist groups is rising both domestically and abroad. As the essentialization of femininity becomes increasingly dangerous, the exigency to reimagine national security initiatives grows. This comment argues that the United States has reached a critical juncture in its counterterrorism …

Monasky V. Taglieri: The Supreme Court’S Interpretation Of Habitual Residency And Its Impact On International Child Abduction, Abigail Leann Heeter

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

The most common form of kidnapping is when a child is taken by a parent from a co-parent. When the kidnapping parent is native to another country, navigating the international family courts can be more than challenging. Because of this, the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction created an order that all signatory countries must return an abducted child to their location of habitual residency. However, the Hague Convention declined to define what habitual residency meant, leaving it up to the determination of the Courts. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court confronted this issue in the landmark …

Automatic Posture Correction Utilizing Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Ravi Kiran Kattoju Jan 2022

Automatic Posture Correction Utilizing Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Ravi Kiran Kattoju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Habitually poor posture can lead to repetitive strain injuries that lower an individual's quality of life and productivity. Slouching over computer screens and smart phones, asymmetric weight distribution due to uneven leg loading, and improper loading posture are some of the common examples that lead to postural problems and health ramifications. To help cultivate good postural habits, researchers have proposed slouching, balance, and improper loading posture detection systems that alert users through traditional visual, auditory or vibro-tactile feedbacks when posture requires attention. However, such notifications are disruptive and can be easily ignored. We address these issues with a new physiological …
