Xenotransplants: The Risks And Benefits, Sima Langner
Xenotransplants: The Risks And Benefits, Sima Langner
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
This literature review discusses how xenotransplants from animals, especially pigs, can serve as viable alternatives to allotransplants. There are many ways of ensuring the health of the host, including testing the donor pig for cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, simian agent 8, and other viruses linked to transmitted infections. The Galα-1,3-Gal epitope and N-glycolylneuraminic acid are both recognized by human antibodies and induce rejection. To remedy this, double knockout pigs have been developed that lack both. The human complement system serves as another potential pitfall for xenotransplants that can be neutralized by introducing human complement regulatory proteins into transgenic animals pre-transplant. …

Crohn’S Disease: Risk Factors As Pathways To Treatment, Yonina Wallerstein
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Objective: This paper discusses the research available regarding risk factors of Crohn’s disease. Risk factors are analyzed to determine which are the most likely to cause pathogenesis. Discussion includes a definition of the disease, including new ways to diagnose and treat it. Prevalence amongst different populations is reviewed to consider a broad variety of environmental and genetic factors. Risk factors and research of affected populations lead to the study of the microbiome and how that must be further studied to broaden understanding and treatment options.

Infections caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus continue to pose threats to human health and put a financial burden on the healthcare system. The overuse of antibiotics has contributed to mutations leading to the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and there is a critical need for the discovery and development of new antibiotics to evade drug-resistant bacteria. Medicinal plants have shown promise as sources of new small-molecule therapeutics with potential uses against pathogenic infections. The principal Rhode Island secondary metabolite (PRISM) library is a botanical extract library generated from specimens in the URI Youngken Medicinal Garden by upper-division undergraduate …

Ordinary And Extraordinary Images: Making Visible The Operations Of Stock Photography In Posters Against The Repeal Of The 8th Amendment, Ann Curran
Articles
The operations of stock photographs, as utilised by the Irish anti-abortion lobby, have not been examined before. Many of the ‘Vote No’ posters in the 2018 Irish referendum campaign on the 8th amendment maintained a visual and textual focus on foetal personhood: asking the Irish electorate to ‘love both,’ while deploying a range of stock photographs. In this article, I trace specific stock images used on anti-abortion posters against Repeal back to their online image bank sources. I make visible the role of generic or stereotypical photographs in anti-abortion messaging, in the knowledge that stock photographs often function best when …

A phonon is a discrete unit of vibrational motion that occurs in a crystal lattice. Phonons and the frequency at which they propagate play a significant role in the thermal, optical, and electronic properties of a material. A phononic material/device is similar to a photonic material/device, except that it is fabricated to manipulate certain bands of acoustic waves instead of electromagnetic waves. Phononic materials and devices have been studied much less than their photonic analogues and as such current materials exhibit control over a smaller range of frequencies. This study aims to test the viability of machine learning, specifically neural …

N, N-Dimethylacetamide Targets Neuroinflammation In Alzheimer’S Disease In In Vitro And Ex Vivo Models, Zenghui Wei
Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with no cure, accounting for 60-80% of cases of dementia. While the two pathologic hallmarks of AD, senile plaques from extracellular deposition of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) and tau-based neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), have been known for decades, the pathogenesis of AD remains unclear. In recent years, anti-neuroinflammatory treatment has entered the spotlight in AD research. In previous studies, we have shown that N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA), a common drug excipient, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. In the current work, we investigate the effect of DMA on neuroinflammation and its mechanism of action in in-vitro and ex-vivo …

Since Hodgkin and Huxley’s discoveries in the 1950s, mathematical modeling became an indispensable tool in neuroscience. The evolution of computer systems paved the way for computational models to improve our understanding of the nervous system. The long-term goals of this research are to develop tools for examining, understanding, and analyzing experimental data from spinal motoneurons (MNs), which are implicated in many motor disorders. Specifically, I developed high-fidelity, anatomically-detailed computational models that could be used to 1) study the cellular mechanisms underlying the non-linear MNs firing behaviors, 2) analyze the multifactorial process of MNs excitability regulation, and how it is affected …
Multi-Temporal Monitoring Of Petroglyphs Using Sfm Photogrammetry, Aaron Estes
Multi-Temporal Monitoring Of Petroglyphs Using Sfm Photogrammetry, Aaron Estes
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the development and testing of an experimental method for monitoring the condition of archaeological features through computer-assisted 3D change detection. This method utilizes structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry and the Model-to-Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2) algorithm to document and compare features in three dimensions. In collaboration with the Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF) of eastern Kentucky, USA, this method was tested using a sample of nine ancient rock carvings, or petroglyphs, in hopes of identifying and tracking multiscale change. SfM photogrammetry is the process of creating 3D representations using 2D images, and the M3C2 algorithm measures the precise distance between …

The Midwest region of the United States is a global agriculture center and home to nearly 70 million people. As a result of ongoing climate change, the area is already experiencing changes in hydroclimate. Precipitation has increased in the region every decade since the 1970s. It is projected that these changes will continue to increase in the future in both severity and occurrence, particularly in the form of extreme hydroclimate events. Hydroclimate has varied in the regions past; however, a lack of high-resolution paleoclimate records for the region limits our understanding of past hydroclimate variability. Lakes are sensitive to changes …
The Phenomenon Of The Infantilization Of Women, Caitlin R. Rechdan
The Phenomenon Of The Infantilization Of Women, Caitlin R. Rechdan
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The sexualization of women in advertisements remains a controversial form of media, specifically infantilization. Infantilization is defined as the portrayal of adult women acting and looking childish through attire and demeanor. This study examines consumers’ perceptions of infantilized women in advertisements. Students (n = 100) from a 4-year university participated in an online questionnaire examining measures of morality, objectionability, and ubiquity of five advertisements. Three out of the five advertisements display infantilized female models. The others show women in a non-infantilizing manner. A single chi-square conducted on the participants found significant differences in if students can correctly identify in ads. …

The advent of forensic DNA evidence has made possible the prosecution of many crimes that would otherwise be un-prosecutable or that would have been weak cases, if prosecuted. At the same time, forensic DNA technology has raised very substantial concerns about the reliability of evidence previously viewed as the gold standard in proof Wrongful convictions by the Innocence Project and others have established that eyewitness misidentifications, false confessions, bad forensics and mistaken guilty pleas occur. The much lesser known but still very troubling concern is with the performance of defense counsel in cases in which the prosecution has forensic DNA …

Career Choice Of Tourism Students In A Triple-Whammy Crisis, Monica W.C. Choy, Alexander Seeshing Yeung
Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)
Hong Kong hospitality and tourism industry has been battered by the triple whammy of social unrest, Sino-US trade war and COVID-19 pandemic in recent years. To understand how vulnerable tourism students may be in terms of career shock when facing the three major challenges, 407 tourism students in Hong Kong were surveyed. Structural equation modelling found a positive correlation between affect (an intrinsic, motivating factor) and extraneous events (an extrinsic, demotivating factor), indicating that motivation and demotivating factors may co-exist. Affect was more positively correlated with three career choice outcomes (intent to join the industry, desire for a lifelong career, …

Age And Inclusivity In Umm An-Nar Communal Tombs From Southeastern Arabia, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger, Christian Berends, Alyssa Bolster, Brittany Clark, Hannah Jeanlouis, Urvi Kaul, Rachael Orkin
Year 2: AABA 2022 – Denver, CO
Umm an-Nar (2700-2000 BCE) tombs in the United Arab Emirates contained the commingled remains of hundreds of individuals interred across multiple generations. Archaeologists commonly reference tomb demographics as being inclusive of all ages, but this assumption is based on a handful of studies that rarely distinguish age categories beyond “subadult” or “adult.” An undergraduate research training program sought to examine age distributions – and thus inclusivity in tomb membership – in greater detail, with a particular focus on fetal and older adult age categories.
A combination of traditional and novel aging techniques were applied to bones from tombs Unar 1 …

Analyzing The Prevalence And Severity Of Cribra Orbitalia In Bronze Age Arabia, Urvi Kaul, Brittany Clark, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger
Year 2: AABA 2022 – Denver, CO
Background: The Umm an-Nar period (ca. 2700-2000 BCE) in southeastern Arabia was marked by the intensification of oasis agriculture and a corresponding shift to sedentism. Cribra orbitalia lesions from tombs Unar 1 and Unar 2 (Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, UAE) were observed for rates of nonspecific stress during this period of transition. We hypothesized that due to increased reliance on agriculture beginning around 2200 BCE, Unar 1 individuals would have a higher prevalence of active cribra orbitalia.
Methods: Given the commingled and fragmentary nature of these collections, we first scored percentage of orbit present in 25% increments. Scorable orbits (defined …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
Unlike the α-helical and β-sheet antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), our knowledge on amino acid-rich AMPs is limited. This article conducts a systematic study of rich AMPs (>25%) from different life kingdoms based on the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (APD) using the program R. Of 3425 peptides, 724 rich AMPs were identified. Rich AMPs are more common in animals and bacteria than in plants. In different animal classes, a unique set of rich AMPs is deployed. While histidine, proline, and arginine-rich AMPs are abundant in mammals, alanine, glycine, and leucine-rich AMPs are common in amphibians. Ten amino acids (Ala, Cys, Gly, His, …

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Delta variant quickly rose to dominance in mid-2021, displacing other variants, including Alpha. Studies using data from the United Kingdom and India estimated that Delta was 40-80% more transmissible than Alpha, allowing Delta to become the globally dominant variant. However, it was unclear if the ostensible difference in relative transmissibility was due mostly to innate properties of Delta's infectiousness or differences in the study populations. To investigate, we formed a partnership with SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance programs from all six New England US states. By comparing logistic growth rates, we found that Delta …

Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
In December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first identified as an acute infectious disease in Wuhan, China and subsequently led to an ongoing pandemic. At the onset of the pandemic, dental professionals were understood to face the greatest exposure risk to SARS-Cov-2 due to aerosolization of fluids from the oral cavity and respiratory airways . As a result, dental professionals, including academic institutions and their students and residents halted much of their operations to minimize exposure risks and potentially slow the spread of infection to peers and patients alike. Currently, there is little in the literature that describes …

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder which results in deleterious changes to psychological and physical health. Patients with PTSD are especially susceptible to life-threatening co-morbid inflammation-driven pathologies, such as autoimmunity, while also demonstrating increased T-helper 17 (TH17) lymphocyte-driven inflammation. While the exact mechanism of this increased inflammation is unknown, overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is a hallmark of PTSD. Neurotransmitters of the sympathetic nervous system (i.e., catecholamines) can alter T-lymphocyte function, which we have previously demonstrated to be partially mitochondrial redox-mediated. Furthermore, we have previously elucidated that T-lymphocytes generate their own catecholamines, and strong …

Excluded From Our City: Clement Of Alexandria And The Porous Frontier Of Early Christian Identity, Jordan C. Goneau-Goncalves
Theology Graduate Theses
In the Paedagogus, the second volume of his three major works, Clement of Alexandria develops a “Christian” ethic and sense of identity, which is dependent on one’s “habits, deeds, and passions.”1 The work itself is directed toward “you who are children” and is intended to instruct Christians in matters of character and behavior.2 Though he is preoccupied with attempting to educate—rather, allowing his understanding of Christ to educate—Christians in regard to appropriate behaviors and values, thereby defining and maintaining a unique sense of Christian identity in late second century Alexandria, he is also at home in a …

Understanding what fishers know about the ecology of the fish they catch, and how they perceive the state and management of their fisheries can guide efforts towards more sustainable fishing practices. We tested relationships between fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) and their perceptions of their fisheries and of marine protected areas in the Dominican Republic. A qualitative-quantitative methodological sequence using data from interviews with 152 multi-species fishers revealed variable, but generally high levels of LEK, particularly of habitat use and predator–prey interactions. The majority reported negative perceptions of the state of their fishery and were aware of local management actions. …
