As part of our research group's continuous efforts to find alternative treatments for cancer, the aqueous ethanol extract of Sesbania sesban L. Merr. (SS, Egyptian riverhemp) demonstrated an antileukemic activity against K562 cell line. Bioguided fractionation of SS leaves hydroethanolic extract resulted in the isolation of one new compound (33) named as hederatriol 3-O-β-D-glucuronic acid methyl ester as well as 34 known compounds. Seven compounds ((34), (22), (20), (24), (21), (19), and (35)) showed high antiproliferative effects (IC50 = 22.3, 30.8, 31.3, 33.7, 36.6, 37.5, and 41.5 μM, respectively), while four compounds ((32), (5), (29), and (1)) showed milder activities …

While overall survival with multiple myeloma (MM) has improved, patients suffer from overwhelming tumor burden, MM-associated comorbidities, and frequent relapses requiring administration of salvage therapies. As a result, this vicious cycle is often characterized by cumulative immunodeficiency stemming from a combination of disease- and treatment-related factors leading to neutropenia, T-cell deficiency, and hypogammaglobulinemia. Infectious etiologies differ based on the duration of MM and treatment-related factors, such as number of previous treatments and cumulative dose of corticosteroids. Herein, we present the case of a patient who was receiving pomalidomide without concomitant corticosteroids for MM and was later found to have cryptococcosis, …

Herein we report a method for the synthesis of 3,4,5-trisubstituted isoxazoles in water under mild basic conditions at room temperature via a [3 + 2]-cycloaddition of nitrile oxides and 1,3-diketones, β-ketoesters, or β-ketoamides. We optimized the reaction conditions to control the selectivity of the production of isoxazoles and circumvent other competing reactions, such as O-imidoylation or hetero [3 + 2]-cycloaddition. The reaction happens fast in water and completes within 1-2 hours, which provides an environmentally friendly access to 3,4,5-trisubstituted isoxazoles, an important class of structures found in numerous bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals. Additionally, we optimized the reaction conditions to …

Modulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is of great interest for its therapeutic relevance in several pathophysiological processes. The CB2 subtype is largely localized to immune effectors, including microglia within the central nervous system, where it promotes anti-inflammation. Recently, a rational drug design toward precise modulation of the CB2 active site revealed the novelty of Pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepines tricyclic chemotype with a high conformational similarity in comparison to the existing leads. These compounds are structurally unique, confirming their chemo-type novelty. In our continuing search for new chemotypes as selective CB2 regulatory molecules, following SAR approaches, a total of 17 selected (S,E)-11-[2-(arylmethylene)hydrazono]-PBD analogs …

Dual Drug Loaded Lipid Nanocarrier Formulations For Topical Ocular Applications, Ahmed Adel Ali Youssef, Narendar Dudhipala, Soumyajit Majumdar

Faculty and Student Publications

Introduction: Untreated ocular infections can damage the unique fine structures of the eye with possible visual impairments and blindness. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) ophthalmic solution is prescribed as first-line therapy in ocular bacterial infections. Natamycin (NT) ophthalmic suspension is one of the progenitors in ocular antifungal therapy. Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have been widely examined for ocular penetration enhancement and distribution to deeper ocular tissues. The objective of the current study was to prepare NLCs loaded with a combination of CIP and NT (CIP-NT-NLCs) and embed them in an in-situ gelling system (CIP-NT-NLCs-IG). This novel formulation will target the co-delivery of CIP …

Remote Analysis Capabilities Of Digitally Rendered Models Of Human Remains: Obtaining Osteometric Data & Assessing Pathology And Taphonomic Alteration - Using Non-Human Animal Remains As An Analogue, M. Elizabeth Dyess

2022 Symposium

Computed tomography (CT), photogrammetry, and laser surface scanning technologies have enabled remote, noninvasive, and non-destructive analysis of skeletal human remains in various contexts. Such technologies have found applications in the disciplines of osteoarchaeology, forensic anthropology, the medical sciences, and other related fields of inquiry. This presentation will discuss the accuracy and reliability of osteometric data obtained from digitally rendered models, as well as the clarity and level of detail attained. Such qualifying standards are essential if practitioners are to reliably assess pathology and taphonomic alteration to the specimens from which the scans are modeled. The suitability of each of the …

The Use Of Probiotic Applications In Early Life Stages To Mitigate Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis Infections In Rana Luteiventris (Columbia Spotted Frogs), Autumn N. Holley

2022 Symposium

Chytridiomycosis, an amphibian skin disease caused by a chytrid fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been linked to global amphibian declines. Some amphibian populations are resistant to severe infection due to symbiotic antifungal skin bacteria, but attempts to develop probiotics from these bacteria have been inconsistently successful because bacteria fail to persist on the skin. Studies have largely been conducted on adult and juvenile amphibians, despite amphibians having fewer known mechanisms for microbiome regulation prior to metamorphosis. We hypothesize that probiotics will persist longer and thus be more effective against pathogen infection if they are applied at an early life …

Does Aphid Feeding Trigger The Production Of H202 In Wild Barley?, Richard Justin Holewa

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

In an in vivo experiment to see if the oxidative burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is utilized as a defense mechanism in barley against the bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi), aphids were pre- starved then allowed to feed on cultivated (Hordeum vulgare) and wild barley (H. spontaneum) accessions. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated in barley leaves in response to aphid feeding was quantified with DAB (3,3'-diaminobenzidine) staining. Stained leaves were digitized and analyzed using Fiji. Proportions of stained areas were statistically tested for significance (with pooled t-tests and ANOVA at 5%). No significant differences were detected between wild and cultivated …

Developing Cultural Competency As A Counselor, John Arnold Jan 2022

Developing Cultural Competency As A Counselor, John Arnold

Integrated Studies

For many people counseling is a terrifying experience. Just the thought of sharing your deepest fears or most private problems can be overwhelming. We can all agree that counseling is a necessary option for people in our society. What I have researched is the importance that we focus on the quality of this service. Unfortunately, many people have had bad experiences with counselors that prevent them from getting the help they need. Some of these bad experiences could have been potentially avoided if the counselors were more culturally competent. Cultural competency is essential for counselors who want to be effective …

Mental Health In The African American Community, Nora Parker Jan 2022

Mental Health In The African American Community, Nora Parker

Integrated Studies

Abstract

From generations before, people in the African American community did not discuss mental health and issues that came along with it. A lot of it was because it was not understood. On the other hand, the African American Community didn’t want to talk about it. Having a mental health illness was considered a curse. Instead of dealing with the issues, people elected to sweep it under the rug, ignore it, or just not deal with it at all. In the past, it was the lack of awareness, ignoring the problem, dealing with the issues the best way they knew …

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA, has been protecting workers safety and health since 1970. This allowed federal protection of workers safety and health rights. For many years, federal protection of workers safety was nonexistent. President Richard Nixon signed the Occupational Safety and Health act in 1970 after President Lydon Johnson’s failed attempt of establishing the act three years prior. It was a very long and difficult process for the OSHA act to come to order. OSHA has protected workers in a variety of industries such as, construction, manufacturing, and general industry. I will be discussing …

Trauma Will Not Discriminate, Sabrina Lovell-Spear, Sabrina Lovell-Spear Jan 2022

Trauma Will Not Discriminate, Sabrina Lovell-Spear, Sabrina Lovell-Spear

Integrated Studies

Abstract

Trauma has played a different role in everyone it has encountered. Trauma has affected individual’s lifestyles, relationships, mental health, and physical well-being. It has a way of letting people look at one another differently and with judgment. It can keep hidden in individuals for years and come out when they least expect it. It is not meticulous when it comes to whom it wants to plant its seed in. How people react to individuals with trauma is often with empathy, but in certain situations, there are some people that can persecute and turn a blind eye.

Acknowledging trauma as …

Regulation Of Genetically Engineered (Ge) Mosquitoes As A Public Health Tool: A Public Health Ethics Analysis, Zahra Meghani

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Background: In recent years, genetically engineered (GE) mosquitoes have been proposed as a public health measure against the high incidence of mosquito-borne diseases among the poor in regions of the global South. While uncertainties as well as risks for humans and ecosystems are entailed by the open-release of GE mosquitoes, a powerful global health governance non-state organization is funding the development of and advocating the use of those bio-technologies as public health tools.

In August 2016, the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA) approved the uncaged field trial of a GE Aedes aegypti mosquito in Key Haven, Florida. The …
