Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul Apr 2022

Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul

Management Dynamics

Attention of researchers in the strategic management literature has been drawn to the phenomenon that a firm which develops an ability to learn offers an important source of competitive advantage to it. Thus the concept has been understood from a variety of angles like, levels of learning in organizations, process of learning, outcomes and barriers to learning. On the other hand, firms are increasingly being looked at from the network perspective, since it has been accepted that no organization can function in isolation and rather its existence is affected by the myriad of relationships with other firms, in which it …

Spontaneity, Agility, Craftsmen's Pride, And Informalization, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Spontaneity, Agility, Craftsmen's Pride, And Informalization, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

To counteract rigidification by standardization, we need: (1) employees' self-generating experimentation without punishment for failures; (2) letting "the nail which sticks out" grow instead of hammering it down; (3) examining crazy ideas seriously; (4) cultivation of craftsmen's pride instead of filling the requirements like robots; (5) spontaneous change-generating quick interaction among heterogeneous employees (morphogenetic process); (6) barrier-free outbreeding to and from outsiders; (7) elimination of ponderous and rigid procedurism and overcontrol; (8) elimination of inbreeding; (9) mastering the masterpieces before moving ahead.

Managerial And Administrative Accidents, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Managerial And Administrative Accidents, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

With good intentions, managers and administrators may cause professional accidents by overloading, overcrowding, overriding or overtrusting. (1)They may overload themselves and their subordinates; (2) They may overcrowd their time table; (3)They may shortcut and override some necessary details which their subordinates or business partners have painstakingly made; (4) In communist or post-communist countries, they may over-trust "official" specialists without any system of quality control.

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama Apr 2022

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama

Management Dynamics

In countries where the management is not dominated by the established orthodoxy of European and North American theories, principles and practices, it is possible to use alternative concepts with less ponderous resistance. Most of the researchers who follow the established orthodoxy either: (a) take it for granted that the corporate cultures are preconditioned by or reflect their country cultures, and therefore they begin their research with a study of country cultures, and then proceed to interpret corporate cultures in terms of country cultures; or (b) infer the country cultures from an aggregate of corporate cultures. In both cases they intentionally …

I am Juan Sebastian Bohorquez Mora, I am a sophomore student at Toms River High School North. I am interested in biofuels because I believe they are a good option to replace fossil fuels. I am also interested in duckweed because biofuels are made out of crops, and people need to eat those crops. That’s when duckweed comes in and it can be used as a feedstock for ethanol production which is a biofuel. Bioethanol is a type of biofuel and it is derived from the corn’s starch. Instead of making ethanol from the corn’s starch, we can use duckweed …

Understanding Barriers To Sexual Assault Reporting Among Undergraduate Sorority Women, Isabella Rivera Apr 2022

Understanding Barriers To Sexual Assault Reporting Among Undergraduate Sorority Women, Isabella Rivera

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

This study aimed to examine the correlation between knowledge of sexual health and sexual assault, and the subsequent disclosure of sexual assault amongst undergraduate women in sororities at St. John’s University. During the academic year (2019-2020), the number of reported sexual assaults on campus was discrepant among the perception of the student body, with students believing there to be a higher number of incidents than reported to the University. Possible causes of the lack of formal sexual assault reporting were investigated. This included the knowledge of undergraduate women at St. John’s University pertaining to sexual health, reproductive health, university resources, …

Empowering Libraries Through Controlled Digital Lending, Chris Freeland Apr 2022

Empowering Libraries Through Controlled Digital Lending, Chris Freeland

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Libraries play a crucial societal role in providing access to information and preserving that information over time. Unfortunately that role is under threat from a number of sources: budget reductions, exorbitant licensing fees, and the inability for libraries to own (not lease) digital content. In this session, Chris Freeland, Director of the Open Libraries program at the Internet Archive, will cover how existing library practices like interlibrary loan & controlled digital lending empower libraries to reach their patrons where they're learning—online—and the new efforts helping libraries take control of their digital futures.

Does Chronic Risperidone Administration Affect Food Reinforcement In Adulthood In Mice?, Francis Torres, Paul Soto Apr 2022

Does Chronic Risperidone Administration Affect Food Reinforcement In Adulthood In Mice?, Francis Torres, Paul Soto

LSU Master's Theses

Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) increase weight gain and food consumption in humans and non-human animals. It has been speculated that SGAs increase the reinforcing effects of food, which increases food consumption and drives weight gain. The current study evaluated the effects of risperidone on sucrose reinforcement in male and female C57BL/6J mice using economic demand assessments. Demand for sucrose was measured by varying the fixed ratio (FR) value required to produce sucrose delivery across experimental sessions using five FR values: 1, 5, 15, 30, and 45. The effects of acute risperidone administration on demand for sucrose were first assessed by orally …

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene Apr 2022

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene

LSU Master's Theses

Research suggests that musculoskeletal markers (MSMs) can provide information about the lives of deceased individuals. The majority of studies focus on single factors that influence the morphology of MSMs in pre-modern societies (i.e., medieval, hunter-gatherers, preindustrial, etc.). This study analyzes MSMs of modern skeletons of 72 females and 83 males from the United States whose ages at death range from 30 to 89 to understand the relationship between various biological factors and MSM morphology. Eight MSMs (attachments of pectoralis major, deltoid, brachialis, supinator, iliopsoas, gluteus maximus, quadriceps, and soleus) were analyzed and categorized as phases zero, one, two, or three …

Development And Characterization Of Physicochemical Properties And Consumer Perception Of Gluten-Free Oat-Based Snack Bars Containing Orange Peel, Andrea R. Muela Negrete Apr 2022

Development And Characterization Of Physicochemical Properties And Consumer Perception Of Gluten-Free Oat-Based Snack Bars Containing Orange Peel, Andrea R. Muela Negrete

LSU Master's Theses

Orange peel (OP) is a major byproduct from orange juice production, and is a good source of fiber and flavonoids, particularly nobiletin. Nobiletin has been reported to exhibit pharmacological activities including anti-inflammation and antioxidation. Incorporating orange peel into food products would harness economic benefit of this industrial byproduct and support a sustainable food chain. This study was performed to evaluate consumer perception of gluten-free oat-based snack bars (GFOSBs) containing orange peel.

In the first study three GFOSBs were formulated to contain 17%, 20%, and 23% orange peel by weight. Consumers (N=103) evaluated GFOSBs for sensory liking (9-point hedonic scale) and …

New Multimedia Resources For Ecological Resilience Education In Modern University Classrooms, Katharine F. E. Hogan, Julie A. Fowler, Conor D. Barnes, Alison K. Ludwig, Dominic J. Cristiano, Daniel Morales, Rubi Quiñones, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr, Jenny Dauer

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Solutions to global problems such as climate change and biodiversity loss require educational frameworks and accompanying teaching resources that are theory-based, interdisciplinary, and accessible to broad undergraduate and graduate student audiences. Ecological resilience theory (ERT) is a framework with established interdisciplinary application to complex global problems, but despite an emphasis on the utility of resilience in national higher education frameworks, we found that many current ecology textbooks incorporate multiple definitions and highly variable amounts of discussion on core resilience concepts. To facilitate the use of innovative teaching resources in ERT in universities, this paper describes four free multimedia tools and …

Trauma And Alcohol/Substance Use: The Role Of Self-Regulation Flexibility, Saankari Anusha Challa Apr 2022

Trauma And Alcohol/Substance Use: The Role Of Self-Regulation Flexibility, Saankari Anusha Challa

Dissertations

Despite a high comorbidity rate between trauma/PTSD and problematic alcohol/substance use, there is only a small body of work investigating moderators and mediators in this relationship. Few studies have examined the role of self-regulation, composed of coping and emotion regulation, in the context of PTSD and problematic substance use. Prior work has generally measured self-regulation categorically, with strategies labeled as maladaptive or adaptive, and therefore failing to account for the adaptiveness of the strategy in particular contexts. The present study is the only one to date to examine self-regulation flexibility in the relationship between posttraumatic symptoms (PTSS) and problematic alcohol/substance …

The Impact Of Cpsf6 On The Innate Immune Response To Hiv Infection, Kenith Taukolo '23 Apr 2022

The Impact Of Cpsf6 On The Innate Immune Response To Hiv Infection, Kenith Taukolo '23

Student Publications & Research

With no current vaccine for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), it is crucial to study what factors influence how HIV infects host cells to develop new strategies and therapies to combat this pandemic. Cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor 6 (CPSF6) is an HIV host factor known to influence HIV infectivity and trafficking early in the infection. Two isoforms of CPSF6 exist, but the true difference between the two are currently unknown. This investigation strives to discover the difference between the two isoforms in regard to the innate immune response. Initially, we require a way to overexpress CPSF6 in mammalian cells to …

Using Machine Learning To Recognize Chronic Rhinosinusitis, Irene Liu '23 Apr 2022

Using Machine Learning To Recognize Chronic Rhinosinusitis, Irene Liu '23

Student Publications & Research

Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a nasal disease characterized by the inflammation of the mucosa and paranasal sinuses with a duration of at least 12 consecutive weeks. So, to diagnose CRS, one needs to keep a record of their symptoms for ~12 weeks before they are recommended to get a tomography which will allow physicians to classify them as a patient with CRS or without. This is a timely and costly process; thus, machine learning should be used to speed the process up. Since patients with CRS have more obstructed noses, the sound produced should be different than an individual without …

Jag1 Role In The Extravasation Of Metastasized Tnbc Tumor Cells, Bhavya Vegesna '23 Apr 2022

Jag1 Role In The Extravasation Of Metastasized Tnbc Tumor Cells, Bhavya Vegesna '23

Student Publications & Research

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subclass defined by its lack of hormonal receptors and HER2 amplification. Although TNBC only accounts for 15% of all invasive breast cancers, there are limited therapeutic options for patients with TNBC. Although breast cancer patients have a favorable prognosis if their tumor is detected early, patients with TNBC are prone to earlier recurrence and local/distant metastasis. Consequently, patients with metastatic TNBC have <15% relative 5-year survival rate. The development of metastasis in TNBC is a complex and poorly understood process that includes multiple steps such as genetic and epigenetic alterations, angiogenesis, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), intravasation, and extravasation. Expression of JAGGED-1 (JAG1), a Notch ligand, correlates with metastatic status and poor survival in clinical data. However, the exact mechanism in which JAG1 increases metastasis is unknown. We hypothesize that JAG1 increases metastasis by interacting with endothelial cells. In order to test this idea, we generated JAG1-knockout cells using CRISPR/Cas9 technologies and then modeled the extravasation of these cells compared to JAG1-positive cells. Specifically, we interrogated lung capillary extravasation after intravenous injection of TNBC cells. The lung was chosen due to the propensity of TNBC cells to invade the lung. Preliminary data demonstrates that JAG1 presented in tumor cells acts as a signaler to permit and promote extravasation and metastasis of the cancer cells. For further studies, the long term effects of tumor derived JAG1 will be studied to understand the consequences of JAG1 mediated extravasation on metastatic burden and survival.

Pacific Faculty Work

Upon infection, DNA viruses can be sensed by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), leading to the activation of type I and III interferons to block infection. Therefore, viruses must inhibit these signaling pathways, avoid being detected, or both. Papillomavirus virions are trafficked from early endosomes to the Golgi apparatus and wait for the onset of mitosis to complete nuclear entry. This unique subcellular trafficking strategy avoids detection by cytoplasmic PRRs, a property that may contribute to the establishment of infection. However, as the capsid uncoats within acidic endosomal compartments, the viral DNA may be exposed to detection by Toll-like receptor 9 …

Oncogenic Kras-Mediated Cytokine Ccl15 Regulates Pancreatic Cancer Cell Migration And Invasion Through Ros, Justin K Messex, Kiyah L A Adams, William G Hawkins, David Denardo, Nabeel Bardeesy, Daniel D Billadeau, Geou-Yarh Liou

Open Access Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is well known for its high death rate due to prompt cancer metastasis caused by cancer cell migration and invasion within the early stages of its development. Here, we reveal a new function of cytokine CCL15, namely the upregulation of PDAC cell migration and invasion. We showed increased levels of CCL15 transcripts and protein expressions in human PDAC tissue samples, as well as in cultured cell lines. Furthermore, PDAC cells also expressed CCL15 receptors, including CCR1 and CCR3. Murine PDAC cell lines and tissues strengthened this finding. The manipulation of CCL15 in metastatic Panc-1 cells through …

The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier Apr 2022

The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier

Catholic University Law Review

In common usage the communication of information is not sharply distinguished from the use of language or speech to make factual or propositional statements. So it should come as no surprise that one of the main legal justifications for protecting speech--that it underwrites a “marketplace of ideas” and thereby contributes to the search for truth--has strong parallels in the economic theory of information. “Indeed,” as Kenneth Arrow writes, “the market system as a whole has frequently been considered as an organization for the allocation of resources; the typical argument for its superiority to authoritative central allocation has been the greater …

Testing For Transferred Immunity Of A Universal Influenza Vaccine In Pigs, Rachel Marie Sestak Apr 2022

Testing For Transferred Immunity Of A Universal Influenza Vaccine In Pigs, Rachel Marie Sestak

Honors Thesis

Influenza causes high numbers of illnesses and deaths annually (CDC, 2020). Influenza vaccines prevent these complications by reducing the risk of flu illness between 40-60% (CDC, 2021). However, no vaccination exists for infants under six months old so other methods, such as passive immunity, must be explored. To determine how infants can be protected, we tested the passive transfer of a universal influenza vaccine using a pig model and researched the mechanism of transfer. Four pregnant pigs were vaccinated one time with PBS and one time with HA-129 vaccine and four were vaccinated twice with the HA-129 vaccine. After farrowing, …
