Network Analysis Examining Intrahospital Traffic Of Patients With Traumatic Hip Fracture, Elizabeth A. Secor, David Hamilton, Cecile D'Huyvetter, Kristin Salottolo, David Bar-Or

Introduction: Increased intrahospital traffic (IHT) is associated with adverse events and infections in hospitalized patients. Network science has been used to study patient flow in hospitals but not specifically for patients with traumatic injuries.

Methods: This retrospective analysis included 103 patients with traumatic hip fractures admitted to a level I trauma center between April 2021 and September 2021. Associations with IHTs (moves within the hospital) were analyzed using R (4.1.2) as a weighted directed graph.

Results: The median (interquartile range) number of moves was 8 (7–9). The network consisted of 16 distinct units and showed mild disassortativity (−0.35), similar to …

Background: A silver tsunami is occurring in U.S. prisons because of an unprecedented increase in the older population. Prisons are structurally ill-suited to care for this population and financially burdened with providing the necessary medical and nursing care. States have enacted legislation to afford justice-involved persons parole to manage chronic conditions in community-based long-term care (LTC) facilities. Changes in Medicaid regulations provide a seamless transition from prison to community long-term care for this population. However, it is not known if the stigma of justice involvement impacts the perception of long-term nurses concerning this population.

Yearly, approximately 500,000 children live with life-limiting conditions in the United States; 50,000 die. Yet, details regarding children's days of living as dying are unknown. The aim of this qualitative hermeneutic study is to gain understanding of the phenomenon of living as a dying child. A Gadamerian-inspired approach was implemented to underpin the study, and to analyze poetic text to address the research question: What is it to be living as a dying child? People with disabilities (PWD) experience health disparities, often related to contextual factors beyond the physical differences in body structure and function. The purpose of this article was to develop a research agenda for nursing and communication scholars that explores how developing accessible and empowering communication environments in healthcare contexts might mitigate disability-linked health disparities. We focused on two broad research objectives: developing both accessible communication environments and empowering communication environments in healthcare settings. We present a novel toolbox to generate computed tomography (CT) images from anatomical T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images for use in planning transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) studies in humans (https://github.com/sitiny/mr-topct). Our validated open-source toolbox is aimed at researchers interested in generating bespoke skull models for use in acoustic simulations in TUS studies. Importantly, researchers planning TUS studies will most likely already have access to standard T1-weighted MR images for neuronavigation, making our toolbox compatible with many existing protocols for TUS studies

Background:To facilitate healthy occupational participation and highlight the significance of rest and sleep for older adults, this study aimed to provide a description of rest and sleep patterns and activities of residents in long-term care facilities (LTCFs).

Method: Secondary analysis of rest and sleep data collected from a funded R21 study was conducted. Twenty-nine residents were interviewed using the Yesterday Interview (YI) to describe their time and daily activities, including rest and sleep patterns and activities.

Results: Average time spent sleeping was 10.22 (±1.77) hr and resting was 4.77 (±3.3) hr. Data were also collected on …

Background: Hospital readmissions remain prominent in health care. Functional, cognitive, and environmental factors predict hospital readmissions but may not be thoroughly measured or addressed prior to discharge.

Method: In this cross-sectional study, people hospitalized with chronic conditions completed measures of self-care function, functional cognition, occupational competence, and environmental impact. They also participated in a phone call or medical records review to identify hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge. In a group session, occupational therapists who work in acute care completed acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility measures for the standardized assessments administered to hospital participants.

Identification Of Risk Factors Associated With Leptomeningeal Disease After Resection Of Brain Metastases, Michael Mcdermott

Objective: Resection of brain metastases (BMs) may be associated with increased risk of leptomeningeal disease (LMD). This study examined rates and predictors of LMD, including imaging subtypes, in patients who underwent resection of a BM followed by postoperative radiation.

Methods: A retrospective, single-center study was conducted examining overall LMD, classic LMD (cLMD), and nodular LMD (nLMD) risk. Logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards, and random forest analyses were performed to identify risk factors associated with LMD.

Results: Of the 217 patients in the cohort, 47 (21.7%) developed postoperative LMD, with 19 cases (8.8%) of cLMD and 28 cases (12.9%) of nLMD. …

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is known for his ideals and leadership, but he was above all, a servant. According to the Nobel Foundation, King traveled over 6 million miles from 1957 to 1968 and spoke over 2,500 times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action. For these endeavors, he was arrested more than 20 times, assaulted at least four times, and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Cryptococcus is a rare pathogenic fungus that is known primarily for causing meningeal and pulmonary disease in immunocompromised patients. There are scarce reports of other varieties of cryptococcal infections, such as disseminated and peritoneal disease. Here we present a very rare case of an elderly female patient with a history of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cirrhosis who presented with symptoms of dyspnea and abdominal distention and was found to have Cryptococcus neoformans pleuritis and peritonitis without evidence of disseminated disease. The patient was treated with antifungals consisting of amphotericin and flucytosine followed by fluconazole. This case describes a previously unknown pattern …

Purpose: Informal dementia caregiving by family caregivers is a crucial component of the care provided to people living with dementia (PLwD). The numbers of these family caregivers are rapidly increasing at a time, when in the U.S., the availability of formal caregivers is decreasing. Currently, health professional training focuses on providing care to PLwD and not necessarily addressing the caregiver’s needs, and this training takes place within professional silos and not interprofessionally. Perinatal palliative care is a holistic option that may decrease complex grief yet is under-utilized in midwifery practice in the United States.
