Multiple myeloma (MM) arises following malignant proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow, that secrete high amounts of specific monoclonal immunoglobulins or light chains, resulting in the massive production of unfolded or misfolded proteins. Autophagy can have a dual role in tumorigenesis, by eliminating these abnormal proteins to avoid cancer development, but also ensuring MM cell survival and promoting resistance to treatments. To date no studies have determined the impact of genetic variation in autophagy-related genes on MM risk. The purpose of the study was to explore the experience of pediatric nurses caring for dying children. An estimated 55,000 children die every year in the United States and another 400,000 live with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions requiring them to be admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Nurses who work in this area may have unexplored information and knowledge about the experience itself which could contribute to a better understanding of caring to the nursing profession. Watson's Theory of Human Caring was selected as the framework for the study.

Background: There remains a paucity of data regarding the efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy (ICT) combinations ± vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) targeted therapy (TT) in translocation renal cell carcinoma (tRCC).

Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients with advanced tRCC treated with ICT combinations at 11 centers in the US, France, and Belgium. Only cases with confirmed fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were included. Objective response rates (ORR) and progression-free survival (PFS) were assessed by RECIST, and overall survival (OS) was estimated by Kaplan-Meier methods.

Results: There were 29 patients identified with median age of 38 (21-70) years, …

The University of New Mexico Department of Internal Medicine Office of Quality & Safety evaluated the differences in length of stay (LOS) for the adult general medicine population compared to patients with social determinants of health (specific ICD-10 z-codes) for the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH). The hypothesis was patients with documented social determinants of health had a longer LOS index compared to patients that did not have social determinants of health. This study seeks to understand the experience of end-of-life caregivers and how their subscribed communication norms regarding death impacted their caregiving experience and preparedness to make decisions on their person’s behalf. Eight participants were recruited from a Midwestern support group facility with a population of nearly 8,000 members that include cancer and grief support members. Criteria required adult participants that were less than 10 years out from their caregiving experience. Grief can take many forms and depend on the nature of the attachment between the survivor and the dead (people, animals, living things). When Loss happens, the survivor’s attachment will influence the shape and level of grief. Therapy-resistant cancer stem cells (CSCs) contribute to the poor clinical outcomes of patients with recurrent glioblastoma (rGBM) who fail standard of care (SOC) therapy. ChemoID is a clinically validated assay for identifying CSC-targeted cytotoxic therapies in solid tumors.

In a randomized clinical trial (NCT03632135), the ChemoID assay, a personalized approach for selecting the most effective treatment from FDA-approved chemotherapies, improves the survival of patients with rGBM (2016 WHO classification) over physician-chosen chemotherapy.
