Nurses experience a higher-than-average risk of suicidal ideation and are less likely to seek help than the general population. In addition, nurses have a higher rate of interpersonal violence, hypertension, diabetes, musculoskeletal injury, and obesity. Many nurses experience burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. Because of the required exposure to grief, death, and compassion inherently needed in the profession, hospice and palliative care (HPC) nurses are uniquely positioned for special vulnerability to these issues. This thesis explores the development and implementation of a music therapy method with an individual diagnosed with dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) receiving home hospice services. There is very little known about the effect of music therapy on patients diagnosed with DLB. Informed by Tom Kitwood’s Person-Centered Care (PCC) philosophy for dementia care, Yumiko Sato’s Musical Life Review (MLR) model, and Lisa Kelly and Bill Ahessy’s Reminiscence-Focused Music Therapy (RFMT) model, a clinical method was developed to explore the effects of person-centered music therapy on reminiscence, caregiver connection, and identity. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including chronic and metabolic diseases, are responsible for 74% of global mortality and are strongly influenced by health risk factors. Geographical differences in NCDs have been identified in several countries but have not been completely explained through cultural factors, specifically island and mainland cultures. Problem: Based on the findings of a pre-survey conducted, it was observed that around 6% of the Medical-Surgical nurses who participated from Hospital A possessed "expert knowledge" of the "inpatient handoff sepsis bundle checklist." Problem: Sepsis creates complications for patients and nursing staff. Increasing sepsis bundle compliance has been shown to decrease patient mortality. This quality improvement project utilized a self-administered questionnaire to better understand the opinions of nursing staff on the Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit and explore ways to improve sepsis bundle compliance.

Context: The microsystem is a 32-bed Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit at Hospital X, a 244-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving the Bay Area of California.

Interventions: A questionnaire distributed to nursing staff on the unit was the primary intervention. Through microsystem assessment, questionnaire results, and direct conversations with staff; active and passive data were obtained. …

Cancer-related financial hardship (i.e., financial toxicity) has been associated with anxiety and depression, greater pain and symptom burden, treatment nonadherence, and mortality. Out-of-pocket healthcare costs and lost income are primary drivers of financial toxicity, however, income loss is a pronounced risk factor for cancer patients with low incomes. There has been little progress in developing an income intervention to alleviate financial toxicity cancer patients with low incomes. Unconditional cash transfers (UCT), or guaranteed income, have produced positive health effects in experiments with general low-income populations, but have not yet been evaluated in people with cancer. Problem: This Quality Improvement project aims to improve sepsis bundle education to reduce mortality and morbidity rates related to septicemia in a Medical-Surgical Telemetry Unit at a San Francisco Bay Area Hospital, Hospital Z.

Context: The Quality Improvement project occurred in a Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit at Hospital Z. This Unit is a 32 beds unit with an increased mortality and mobility rate with decreased sepsis bundle compliance.

Intervention: Collect active and passive observational data in the microsystem. Data collection was conducted through anonymous self-administered questionnaires to the registered nurses on the unit. No intervention was implemented at this time. …

Problem: A sepsis protocol and bundle has been implemented in an urban Emergency Department to help screen patients and treat sepsis efficiently and effectively. The benchmarks from the bundle are not being met consistently every month and are below the targeted 90%.

Context: A microsystem assessment and a gap survey sent out to nurses, helped determine that there is room to improve nurses’ knowledge and confidence about sepsis and the sepsis bundle workflow. This study examines the intersection between the theories of Campbell's 'The Hero'sJourney,' Brown's 'Rising Strong,' and Catmull's 'Creativity, Inc..' and the experiences of various photographers who have undertaken projects on motherhood. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes books, interviews, blog entries, documentaries, articles and artist statements to identify patterns and themes. The study finds a consistent pattern of challenge, risk, vulnerability, and struggle, resulting in growth and connection. What adulthood goals do young disabled people set and what factors shape their goal setting and achievement? To answer these questions, I conducted 29 life history interviews with young disabled Millennials and analyzed them using an iterative grounded theory approach. My analysis is informed by social ecological theory, life course theory, and biopsychosocial models of disability to gain an understanding of how the social world shapes respondents’ movement through the transition to adulthood in the context of disability. I find that disabled Millennials pursue a diverse array of goals across personal, health, educational, economic, residential, relational, and community domains. However, …

The agricultural industry lacks qualified workers, suggesting students may not participate in opportunities that effectively develop their employability skills. We used a phenomenological case study approach to investigate Texas A&M University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students’ career-readiness and factors influencing career-readiness. We conducted interviews with 19 juniors and seniors. Open coding procedures revealed five emergent themes—Career Advice-Seeking Behavior,Employability Skills Development, Network Establishment, Relevant Experiences, and Personal Growth. Findings indicate that students do not take advantage of University resources to help them with career preparation. Amyloid is a systemic disease characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded protein. Gastrointestinal and peritoneal deposition of light chain (AL) amyloid is an under-recognized manifestation of this systemic disease, usually as a late sequela. Here we present a case of recently diagnosed AL peritoneal amyloid that presented in the context of recurrent, acute onset abdominal discomfort and was found to have bowel obstruction complicated by perforation in the setting of AL-mediated gastrointestinal tract infiltration and dysmotility.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved cancer outcomes but can cause severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and flares of autoimmune conditions in cancer patients with pre-existing autoimmune disease. The objective of this study was to identify the information physicians perceived as most useful for these patients when discussing treatment initiation with ICIs. Twenty physicians at a cancer institution with experience in the treatment of irAEs were interviewed. Qualitative thematic analysis was performed to organize and interpret data. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary tumor of the liver that primarily develops in the setting of chronic liver disease. HCC is difficult to diagnose due to it requiring the use of multiple imaging modalities with the goal to detect tumors when they are less than or equal to 2 cm in size to allow all possible treatment options to be used. Herein, we discuss a 69-year-old male with stage IV liver cancer residing in hospice presenting with left middle finger osteomyelitis and extreme pain.
