This descriptive correlational study explored the relationships between cultural competence, ethnocentrism, and perspective-taking in practicing medical-surgical nurses living in the United States (US). Participants (N=111) were recruited from the New Jersey Board of Nursing (NJBON) and from the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN). The survey consisted of three validated instruments a) the cultural competence assessment instrument (CCA-I); b) the generalized ethnocentrism scale (GENE); c) the perspective-taking (PT) subscale of the interpersonal reactivity index (IRI), and d) demographic profile questions. The rising prevalence of chronic illnesses, particularly cancer, and aging populations in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) underscore the urgent need for palliative care. Palliative care (PC) improves the quality of life for patients and families facing life-threatening illnesses by addressing physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering. However, cultural barriers impede its implementation, particularly in LMICs. This paper identifies some of these barriers, including the widely held misconceptions of palliative care, inadequate truth-telling practices, and insufficient attention to patients' diverse spiritual needs. It also highlights systemic obstacles such as limited resources, a lack of trained personnel, and inadequate government prioritization. This …

Objective The aims of the study are (1) to evaluate the extended middle fossa approach (eMCF) for resection of tumors in the petroclivus and anterior cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and (2) to compare surgical outcomes between elderly (≥65 years) and nonelderly patients.

Design Retrospective cohort.

Setting Tertiary referral center.

Participants Adults with petroclival, anterior CPA, or posterior fossa lesions who underwent an eMCF approach from 2012 to 2021 were included in the study.

Main Outcome Measure Demographics, symptoms, cranial nerve (CN) function, and postoperative outcomes.

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has long-term cardiovascular and metabolic health implications, impacting quality of life and increasing health expenditures. Veterans have a higher prevalence rate of OSA attributed to an aging population and higher rates of comorbid conditions. The problem of under recognition of OSA symptoms partly relates to clinicians needing to elicit relevant symptoms routinely. At the same time, the lack of primary-care-based screening protocols contributes to the percentage of undiagnosed OSA. Over the past decade, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) funded multiple large-scale, comparative effectiveness clinical trials evaluating palliative care and advance care planning interventions. These are complex multicomponent interventions that need robust but flexible fidelity monitoring. Fidelity is necessary to maintain both internal and external validity within palliative care intervention research and to ultimately evaluate the real-world impact of high-quality interventions. Different trials not only took varying approaches to fidelity monitoring but also uncovered both unique and common challenges and facilitators. This article summarizes 8 of these trials and highlights approaches, adaptations, barriers, and facilitators for intervention fidelity monitoring. …

Objectives. Patients with progressive neurologic illness still lack access to quality palliative care services. Barriers to the comprehensive provision of neuropalliative care include gaps in palliative care education. To address this barrier, a novel international model of neuropalliative care education e-learning program was launched in 2022. Methods. This is a qualitative study on the self-reported learning outcomes and educational gains of participants of a neuropalliative care e-learning course. Results. Thematic analysis shows changes in the participants’ perceptions of neuropalliative care and several specific educational gains. The Louisiana Tumor Registry (LTR) is pleased to present Volume 39 of its annual Cancer in Louisiana monograph series, documenting cancer incidence and mortality from 2017 to 2021 in Louisiana as well as incidence and mortality trends from 1988 to 2021. Survival statistics are for cases diagnosed from 2010 to 2020 and followed into 2021. Prevalence is also presented for cancer cases diagnosed from January 1, 2000, to January 1, 2021. The Role Of Effective Interprofessional Collaboration In Social Worker Burnout In A Northeastern Veterans Affairs Medical Center: Implications For Social Work Education, Michael L. Clarkson-Hendrix

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

This preliminary study explored effective interprofessional collaboration’s role on social worker burnout within a single Veterans Affairs medical center. Twenty-one social workers completed a survey to collect data on burnout, effective interprofessional collaboration components, and demographic characteristics. On average, social workers reported moderately low burnout levels. As collective ownership of goals increased, burnout decreased. Similarly, as reflection on interprofessional team processes increased, burnout decreased. Future research would benefit from a large, randomly-sampled group of social work participants across multiple sectors to develop implications for social work education. Patients with advanced cirrhosis are at risk for numerous complications, including hepatic hydrothorax. Hepatic hydrothorax most commonly occurs in the right pleural space but less commonly can present on the left hemithorax. The exact pathophysiology is not fully understood, but there are several schools of thought for right-sided effusions. In this case report, we discuss the findings of a 76-year-old female who experienced a left-sided hydrothorax likely stemming from her underlying liver disease which created tension pathology in an otherwise stable patient. Interestingly, this accumulation occurred over a couple of weeks despite optimal medical management. A thoracentesis confirmed ascitic fluid. …

The effect of different camera angles on the perceptions of the speaker formed over a virtual interaction, especially in the context of telehealth encounters, has not been systematically investigated. The present study explored how vertical and horizontal angles impact perceptions of a healthcare provider in a video encounter using a 2 (angle type: eye level vs. alternate angle) X 2 (video order: eye level presented first vs. alternate angle presented first) mixed design.
