The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Electoral Geography Of Oregon's Ballot Measure 16: The Death With Dignity Act, Kathleen O'Reilly
The Geographical Bulletin
On November 8, 1994 Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass legislation allowing terminally ill patients to end their own lives with the assistance of a physician. Ballot Measure 16, the Death with Dignity Act, removes criminal penalties for assisting a terminally ill suicide, but does not allow lethal injection. In August 1995, U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan ruled the Death with Dignity Act violates the equal protection clause ofthe 14th Amendment. The ruling is being appealed. This paper investigates electoral voting patterns regarding Measure 16 in the 36 Oregon counties. It explores the relationships between votes …

A Phenomenological Research Study Of The African American Male And Grief: The Need To Communicate, Theresa E. Ellis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This is a dissertation on death, grief, and the communication styles of African American males after the loss of a loved one. It will speak to the limited amount of literature reviews surrounding death, culture, race, gender, and the social determent of death. This dissertation will issue a summation of the limitations of older studies and how to fill the need to conduct newer studies. This dissertation offers suggestions on the need to encourage future researchers to take up the mantle and use their lived experiences on death, grief counseling, mental health counseling, and how spiritual counseling can be used …
Investigating The Perceived Efficacy Of Support Groups As A Secondary-Organization Stress Intervention Measure For Hospice Nurses, Sade A. Allen
Investigating The Perceived Efficacy Of Support Groups As A Secondary-Organization Stress Intervention Measure For Hospice Nurses, Sade A. Allen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation investigated the perceived efficacy of support groups as a secondary organizational intervention measure for hospice nurses. Workplace stress is a common issue in hospice care that impacts workers negatively. It results in declining mental, physical, and social wellness. While research indicates significant benefits of support groups, they are not commonly applied in hospice care. Support groups have been widely used in mental health for years to share information and experiences and discuss problems. This dissertation interviewed eight participants using a qualitative case study approach. The participants were recruited from an online hospice nurse group on Facebook. The information …

Care Providers Caring For Military Members Struggling With Grief, Clara Altagracia García
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research aims to address the lack of grief support services for service members (SMs) and veterans, which affects them and the wider community. The mission is to uncover the needs of SMs and veterans and devise effective strategies to support them. The literature review will provide the foundation for the need for research and create a reasonable solution for a healthier grieving process for SMs. This research aims to determine how complicated grief goes undetected and how counseling can help SMs and veterans. The thesis project will impact the grief counseling process of others in this field and bring …

The Rhythms Of Our Bones, Thomas Henry Bowling
Online Theses and Dissertations
Grief is universal. It permeates all things. This collection is organized into four sections, each concerned with such universality, such permeability, and how the “small,” personal griefs of human relationships echo and form dialogues with the larger, more global griefs of war and violence. Ultimately, at the core of this collection, lies an investigation of family, masculinity, and how all griefs are absorbed and passed down by the generations that have preceded us.

At the end of 2022, there were 1,109,418 adults and adolescents with HIV in the United States and the six dependent areas of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the Republic of Palau, and the US Virgin Islands (CDC, 2024). Due to ongoing advances in medications and treatments, people who have been diagnosed with HIV are living longer and healthier lives, making this a chronic health condition. Yet, there are gaps in the literature that focuses on this population growing older and aging in place. This dissertation investigated the lived experiences of individuals fifty years and older …

Rapid Neurological Decline Due To Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Nicole Tesoro, David Blackwood, Robert Reif, Samuel Miller, Kalyan Paudel, Christopher Haas
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is an exceedingly rare condition with an incidence of one case per million people worldwide. It is diagnosed with symptoms of rapid neurological decline, positive CSF biomarkers, and diagnostic findings on MRI and EEG. There is no known effective therapy for CJD and prompt diagnosis is required to prepare for the expected disease prognosis and goals of care discussions.
Inpatient Versus Outpatient Mri? Outcomes For Hospitalized Patients With New Liver Masses, Ho-Man Yeung
Inpatient Versus Outpatient Mri? Outcomes For Hospitalized Patients With New Liver Masses, Ho-Man Yeung
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
No guidelines exist to guide hospitalists on whether inpatient MRI should be pursued for incidental liver masses. Here, we compare outcomes between patients who receive an inpatient MRI and those who did not, following detection of suspicious liver masses during hospitalization. A retrospective study of hospitalized patients with new HCC from Jan 1st, 2020 through Dec 31st, 2021 was conducted. Patients for hospice or with known HCC were excluded. Out of 34 unique subjects, 22 received MRI inpatient (IP) and 12 did not (non-IP). Time to inpatient MRI averaged 2.2 days. Inpatient LOS between the two groups were similar (6 …

Primary Care Providers’Adherence To 2022 Aha/Acc/Hf-Refsa Guideline Directed Management Therapy For Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction Patients, Tamara Brooks, Brooke Brown, Brittany Gentry, La'charity Perry
MSN Research Projects
Heart failure not only affects the heart but also many other systems within the human body. There are approximately 6.5 million people diagnosed with heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction each year. Of these 6.5 million, roughly thirty percent will have readmission to the hospital or die within one year of diagnosis (Mathews et al., 2022). While the only cure for heart failure is a heart transplant, it is best practice to manage the disease and further prevent the progression and complications associated with heart failure. The researchers conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate primary care adherence to …
Correlation Of Caregiver Role Strain With Impaired Psychosocial Health And Self-Care Practices, Alicia Box, Julie Edwards, Tiffany Watson
Correlation Of Caregiver Role Strain With Impaired Psychosocial Health And Self-Care Practices, Alicia Box, Julie Edwards, Tiffany Watson
MSN Research Projects
In 2021, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. were providing care to a family member or loved one with a chronic health condition or disability (Kilmer et al., 2024). A major concern among caregivers is role strain and the long-term effects on personal physical and mental health. One study indicated that high caregiving burden has been associated with lower involvement in self-care and increased mental health burdens (Tay et al., 2023). Similarly, another study revealed that frequent poor mental health days of the caregiver produce a reduced quality of life (Monahan et al., 2023). The purpose of the study …

45 Is The New 50: Evaluating Colorectal Cancer Screening Practices In Primary Care, Shemille Flinta, Madison Long, Brittany Wiggins
MSN Research Projects
Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for adults in the United States. There have been significant advances in preventative medicine for CRC, but screening completion lags behind other cancers, with only 61% reported adherence based on USPSTF guidelines. About two-thirds of the patients who are diagnosed with CRC already have distally spread disease. Detecting CRC early is vital, as early detection is linked to smaller tumor sizes and better outcomes. The current research study asked three questions with the objectives of assessing the frequency of CRC screening in primary care clinics, evaluating documented barriers to …
