The Dementia Care Partner Hub: An Innovative Approach To Addressing Unmet Social And Health Needs, Sherril Gelmon, Jenn Reed, Walter D. Dawson
OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
The well‐being of care partners of people living with dementia, who are family, friends, or neighbors and often unpaid, is often not addressed explicitly in clinical dementia care. Care partners, especially those from systematically marginalized communities, experience substantial unmet social and behavioral needs. We reviewed role model programs and conducted focus groups and interviews with care partners and representatives of community organizations and government agencies. We developed the concept of a Dementia Care Partner Hub as a “one‐stop shop” to connect dementia care partners and service providers with information and resources, meeting a need that is not currently addressed in …
The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez
The Systemic Side Of Disinformation: The Reid Technique As Exploitative Knowledge Production, Jayden L. Perez
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
In this paper, the author analyzes the Reid Technique – the most commonly employed interrogation technique in the United States – to argue that it employs disinformation to reinforce the power and authority of the police while disregarding the harm caused to the individual suspect. Furthermore, the author shows how the Reid Technique reproduces the structural, systemic side of disinformation when false confessions lead to wrongful convictions that codify disinformation as legal precedent. In turn, these wrongful convictions are interpreted as high-quality data that gets incorporated into the fabric of what scholars and members of our society know about crime …

Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson
Juvenile Justice And Delinquency – Reforming A Broken System, Brandie Olson
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The juvenile justice system faces significant controversies, primarily concerning accountability and the treatment of young offenders. With rising juvenile crime rates, especially in urban areas like Hennepin County, there is an urgent need for reform. How does the system balance the urgency to hold young offenders accountable while providing the necessary support to foster their rehabilitation? Together, we must explore these challenges to pave the way for a more even-handed and effective juvenile justice system that prioritizes the future of our youth. As legal frameworks intersect with adolescent growth, three key ethical domains emerge: ensuring developmental appropriateness, upholding fair treatment, …

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
A career in Law Enforcement allows people to build partnerships with community members to work towards a common goal of enhancing public safety through collaboration and trust. It's a rewarding yet often challenging career because officers must make split-second decisions in high-stress situations while working long hours and missing family events. Over time, police officers experience stressors from their jobs and personal lives that become overwhelming and difficult to navigate due to the unforeseen challenges of their chosen career in law enforcement. These challenges make it crucial for officers to find approaches that enable them to overcome these challenges that …

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C in the United States corrections system is discussed. The importance of implementing harm-reduction strategies to help reduce the spread of bloodborne viruses is described. Also examined are rural communities' barriers to behavioral health and substance use treatment programs. The need for these treatment programs will be defined, and a policy to correct the issue will be proposed. These programs are not without criticism, and the ethics of implementing these programs are often called into question. Ethical considerations of these programs are considered, and an action plan is described to …

Factors Affecting The Educational Status Of Children In Nigeria, Ayima Lott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study is that irrespective of active involvement of Nigeria in Universal Basic Education, the nation still records the highest number of out-of-school children globally. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine how geopolitical location, socio-economics of the household, parental education, role of the child, age of the child, and gender of the child predict the educational status of children in Nigeria. This study is grounded in conflict and social systems theories. The most recent national secondary data on education from the 2015 Nigerian Education Data Survey was used. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate logistic …

Corporate Manslaughter In India: Bridging Legal Gaps With Governance Mechanisms, Ruth Vaiphei Dr.
Corporate Manslaughter In India: Bridging Legal Gaps With Governance Mechanisms, Ruth Vaiphei Dr.
National Law School Business Law Review
Many countries, including India, are dealing with the tragic reality of workplace fatalities which constitute corporate manslaughter. In recent years, there has been increased concern about the snowballing incidence of fatalities in Indian workplaces, emphasising the critical need for effective preventive measures. Corporate negligence and a lack of responsibility have emerged as major contributing factors to workplace fatalities. Furthermore, corporate entities, frequently motivated by profit, may prioritise productivity over safety, resulting in dangerous working conditions and deadly incidents. In response to these problems, regulatory supervision and corporate governance procedures are critical for maintaining worker safety and well-being. The goal of …

What Do Utahns Think About Global Warming And Climate Change?, Scott Hotaling, Kendall Becker, Lendel K. Narine, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Roslynn Mccann, Peter D. Howe
All Current Publications
In Utah, there is widespread consensus that global warming is happening, and the strength of this consensus has been steadily rising since 2010. Over the last 14 years, some public opinion metrics have risen dramatically while others have been largely stable. The degree of climate impacts in Utah will depend on residents’ perceptions of climate change and support for implementing policies to help the state adapt to warmer temperatures, more extreme weather events, and other associated changes. In this fact sheet, we integrate multiple data sources to summarize the status and trends of Utahns’ opinions on climate change.
A Law Enforcement Leader's Response To Human Trafficking, Samuel Whitebear
A Law Enforcement Leader's Response To Human Trafficking, Samuel Whitebear
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Law enforcement leaders must consider how their agency can effectively investigate human trafficking in their jurisdiction. These leaders are tasked with creating an agency culture that prioritizes ethical decision making, which directly affects variables such as officer training and officer treatment of trafficking victims during investigations. Ethically sound decision making has rewards, such as inspiring other leaders to act in a similar fashion. Human trafficking training with an emphasis on the thought-behavior link will enable officers to understand the motivations of both traffickers and victims. Untrained officers rely on biases and assumptions when interacting with sex workers. This is because …
Development And Implementation Of Mental Health Court: Benefits, Barriers, And Bridges, Nevada Smith
Development And Implementation Of Mental Health Court: Benefits, Barriers, And Bridges, Nevada Smith
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The effective development and implementation of a specialty treatment court program such as a Mental Health Court is tedious, involved, and thorough; the impact of these comprehensive efforts is equally worthwhile, valuable, and substantial. The overall success of a mental health court program’s development and implementation derives from equal and intentional consideration of legal, ethical, and administrative factors. Considering these lenses collaboratively establishes the necessary groundwork for any new mental health court program in its infancy to build upon. This research expands on the ongoing statewide crisis involving individuals who are inadvertently left to slip through the cracks of the …

Criminalizing Domestic Violence In Egypt: Legal Gaps, Risk Consequences, And The Need For Reform, Ahmed Hussein
Criminalizing Domestic Violence In Egypt: Legal Gaps, Risk Consequences, And The Need For Reform, Ahmed Hussein
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis advocates for the implementation of domestic violence legislation in Egypt as a crucial legal and judicial reform necessary to prevent such violence and challenge societal norms that normalize it. It first examines the evolution of domestic violence legislation in line with international human rights standards, highlighting its applications worldwide and the role of states to interfere in an aim to combat such violence. The arguments for and against explicit criminalization are analyzed, emphasizing how legal frameworks can alter social behaviors that normalize violence. Following this, the thesis will focus on Egypt's legal framework addressing domestic violence, showing how …
Yes, Your Broken Tailight Does Matter: Why Enforcement Of Minor Traffic Violations Is Integral For A Safe Society, Richard E. Berner
Yes, Your Broken Tailight Does Matter: Why Enforcement Of Minor Traffic Violations Is Integral For A Safe Society, Richard E. Berner
Widener Commonwealth Law Review
“At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.” These words serve as a reminder that within the framework of law and order, human beings are the most spectacular creatures to walk the face of the Earth. Outside of this framework, we are no greater than the most savage of beasts. The United States has historically faced challenges with the presence of racial bias within the legal system. In particular, traffic laws have been subject to uneven enforcement across the country, with one study indicating that black drivers were approximately …

The Not-So-Obvious And Inconvenient Truth: Reexamining A Right To Counsel For Parents And Children In Abuse And Neglect Administrative Proceedings, Tiffany Williams Brewer
Widener Commonwealth Law Review
The right to counsel for parents in administrative abuse and neglect cases, as well as for the children that are the subject of these matters, is a necessity that may not be obvious. This Article seeks to elucidate the fundamental interests that are at stake and justify why the sacrosanct protections of the landmark Gideon v. Wainwright right to counsel case should be extended to an administrative proceeding involving parents who are facing inclusion on a state child abuse and neglect registry. The Article also reveals an inconvenient truth–that communities of color are disproportionately impacted by the consequence of adverse …
Solving Old Cases With New Technology, Philip Hodapp
Solving Old Cases With New Technology, Philip Hodapp
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The State of Minnesota has seen a significant uptick in the homicide rate in the last ten years, and not all homicides are being solved. Due to a significant staffing shortfall across the state, but especially in the inner-city areas, police agencies are having a hard enough time keeping up with ongoing cases, let alone finding time to work on cold cases. With the advancement in DNA technology, including Forensic Genetic Genealogy, cases need to be re-examined to see if the new technology could spark life into older investigations.
Due to the rise in skepticism of policing today and the …

How Do Gender And Marital Status Impact High-Risk Polysubstance Use?, Kira England, Alexander Chapman
Population Health Research Brief Series
Drug overdose deaths in the United States increasingly include the use of multiple drugs, known as polysubstance use. These include opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, tranquilizers, and sedatives. Polysubstance use is considered high risk because it can cause dangerous synergistic effects and result in the ingestion of higher amounts of drugs. This brief summarizes findings from a study that used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health on U.S. adults from 2002 through 2019 to examine gender and marital status differences in high-risk polysubstance use among U.S. adults ages 18 and older. The authors find that polysubstance use is …

Blue Momma, Why Are You So Blue: A Trauma-Informed Theological Approach To Systematically Oppressed Black Mothers In Memphis, Tennessee, Valerie Houston
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation discusses the effects of systemic oppression on the well-being of Black mothers in Memphis, Tennessee. It posits that systemic oppression causes trauma that negatively affects Black motherhood and familial stability. Research shows that maternal mental illness may negatively affect child development, behavior, and cognitive and socio-emotional development.3 Black literary history has revealed the importance of Black mothers for family development.4 It has shown how Black mothers used religion to support themselves emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually during times of travail.5 This work theorizes that a trauma-informed theological approach will liberate Black mothers in Memphis, Tennessee, from …
