Youth Matters: Shedding Light On Displacement In Syrian Girls' Memoirs, Alberta Natasia Adji
Youth Matters: Shedding Light On Displacement In Syrian Girls' Memoirs, Alberta Natasia Adji
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In the face of war and political crisis, fleeing a country seems to be the best choice to get on with life. Among many refugee memoirs, so far young adult refugee texts have received little attention. This article analyses two young Syrian girls’ memoirs by Nujeen Mustafa and Yusra Mardini to investigate their experience of displacement. I argue that both Nujeen and Butterfly are prime specimens of young displacement memoir phenomena which act as a venue for identity negotiation. This point has much to do with their navigating the tensions between personal and collective selves to disclose their trauma and …

The Role Of Eyewitness Confidence And Prosecution/Defense Presentation In How Facial Composites Shape Juror Decision-Making, Rebecca E. Singh
The Role Of Eyewitness Confidence And Prosecution/Defense Presentation In How Facial Composites Shape Juror Decision-Making, Rebecca E. Singh
Student Theses
Eyewitness testimony has been found to be an unreliable form of evidence (Loftus, Miller & Burns, 1978; Oswald & Coleman, 2007; Wells & Hasel, 2007; Loftus & Greenspan, 2017; Jaross, 2018; Wade, Nash, & Lindsay, 2018; Wixted, Mickes, & Fisher, 2018). Yet, this evidence is still used in the courts today, and, in fact, is perceived by jurors as important and compelling in comparison to other case factors (e.g., character evidence, physical evidence; Topp-Manriquez, McQuiston, & Malpass, 2014; Kabzińska, 2015). Additionally, eyewitnesses are sometimes requested to help create a facial composite of the suspect and, critically, these composites are then …
The Impact Of Client's Gender And Culture On Service Providers Strategies In Diversion Programs, Stephany Betances
The Impact Of Client's Gender And Culture On Service Providers Strategies In Diversion Programs, Stephany Betances
Student Theses
Despite the growing rate of adolescent girls in the criminal justice system, there has been little institutional support for empirically supported programs tailored for girls (Matthews & Hubbard, 2008). There is a similar substantial lack of culturally specific programming. Problematically, both constructs have been found to impact treatment (Bright & Jonson-Reid, 2010; Matthews & Hubbard, 2008). This qualitative study utilized grounded theory principals to investigate the impact of gender and culture on the therapeutic relationship for justice-involved youth in seven alternative-to-incarceration agencies in New York City. Elicited themes focused on both recommended strategies and continued challenges. Results indicated that while …

Recent Developments: The Right To A Fair Cross-Section Of The Community And The Black Box Of Jury Pool Selection In Arkansas, Raelynn J. Hillhouse
Arkansas Law Review
A Washington County, Arkansas court conducted a hearing on October 15, 2018 on a criminal defendant’s motion to compel discovery to assure a fair and accurate cross-section of the community for the jury as guaranteed by the United States and Arkansas Constitutions. At the hearing, the jury coordinator for the Circuit Clerk’s office testified that counties may elect to use a state-sponsored jury selection computer program, or they may use proprietary programs. Washington County uses a proprietary computer program to select the jury pool from a list of registered voters. The clerk described how her office takes an extra step …
Improve Image Classification Using Data Augmentation And Neural Networks, Shanqing Gu, Manisha Pednekar, Robert Slater
Improve Image Classification Using Data Augmentation And Neural Networks, Shanqing Gu, Manisha Pednekar, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present how to improve image classification by using data augmentation and convolutional neural networks. Model overfitting and poor performance are common problems in applying neural network techniques. Approaches to bring intra-class differences down and retain sensitivity to the inter-class variations are important to maximize model accuracy and minimize the loss function. With CIFAR-10 public image dataset, the effects of model overfitting were monitored within different model architectures in combination of data augmentation and hyper-parameter tuning. The model performance was evaluated with train and test accuracy and loss, characteristics derived from the confusion matrices, and visualizations of …

Staying Out: Reentry Protective Factors Among Rural Women Offenders, Michele Staton, Megan F. Dickson, Martha Tillson, J. Matthew Webster, Carl G. Leukefeld
Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
The current study examines protective factors for women who transition from county jails to rural Appalachian communities, areas with limited health and behavioral health services. The study included drug-using women recruited from three jails in rural Appalachia and followed-up at 12-months post-release. Analyses focused on differences between women who remained in the community and those who returned to custody, as well as a multivariate model to determine protective factors for reentry success. At the bivariate level, staying out of jail was associated with being older, having a job, not using drugs, stable housing, receiving health treatment, and having prosocial peers. …

The Value Of Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare For Adolescent Substance Users With Comorbid Conditions, Michael A. Gass, Thomas Wilson, Brett Talbot, Anita Reithoffer Tucker, Melissa Ugianskis, Nicholas Brennan
Faculty Publications
The damage inflicted on our society by mental health and substance use issues is reaching epidemic proportions with few signs of abating. One new and innovative strategy for addressing these comorbid issues has been the development of outdoor behavioral healthcare (OBH). This study compared the effectiveness of three post-acute adolescent substance use situations: OBH, treatment as usual (TAU), and no structured treatment (NST). The simulated target population was 13-17 years old with comorbid substance use and mental health issues. When costs were adjusted for actual completion rates of 94% in OBH, 37% in TAU, and $0 for NST, the actual …

Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
Despite former dissident and Czech president Václav Havel?s widespread influence, his presidency has not been seriously considered as a framework for how one should head a government. Havel is known for and evaluated most in terms of his sweeping moral principles and philosophical treatises, but I wish to know whether his presidency passes the test that he provides so clearly in his written works and speeches. Specifically, I will examine how Havel?s philosophical ideas translate to his political acts as president. I will select one international, one domestic, and one economic policy that Havel actively advocated for and instituted, and …

The Arkansas Highway Police: Arkansas's First State Police, Cody Besett
Theses and Dissertations
The State Road Patrol was formed under the Arkansas Highway Department in 1929 as the first state law enforcement power in Arkansas. The Road Patrol focused enforcement on proper weight and licensing of commercial vehicles. The duties for the State Road Patrol were transferred to other state agencies, including the Revenue Department and State Police (Weights and Standards Division). The Weights and Standards Division returned to the Highway Department in 1963 and was renamed the Arkansas Highway Police in 1979. The Highway Police increased training in the 1970s and 1980s. The Highway Police adopted additional duties that included federal motor …

Adherence To The Street Code Predicts An Earlier Anticipated Death, Kevin T. Wolff, Jonathan Intravia, Michael T. Baglivio, Alex R. Piquero
Publications and Research
Objective: Criminologists have long been interested in the relationship between subcultural attitudes and antisocial behavior, with Anderson’s street code thesis being the most recent and often researched foray in this area. Relatedly, scholars have begun to investigate the risk factors associated with the anticipation of early death. Extant research, however, has yet to empirically test Anderson’s hypothesis that subscription to the street code is predictive of an anticipated early death. This study contributes to the literatures on the street code as well as fatalism by investigating the link between these two constructs.
Method: Using data from a sample of serious …

Professional Interaction In Mental Health Courts: Processing Defendants With Mental Illness, Monte D. Staton
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, the author presents ethnographic research and analysis of how criminal justice and mental health professionals interact with each other and with criminal defendants with mental illness in running a mental health court (MHC) program. Ethnographic field research included observations of court programs, interviews of professionals, and gathering of textual documents, at nine MHCs in a Midwestern state. In MHC criminal defendants with mental illness participate in a program of regular court appearances, probation supervision, and mandated treatment, rather than being incarcerated in jail or prison. The author utilized the symbolic interaction perspective and examined how the professionals …
Addressing The Health Needs Of Patients Diagnosed With A Chronic Disease In A Rural Alberta, Canada Primary Care Setting, Samantha J. Hesterman
Addressing The Health Needs Of Patients Diagnosed With A Chronic Disease In A Rural Alberta, Canada Primary Care Setting, Samantha J. Hesterman
Counseling
This comprehensive literature review presents findings associated with the need for more mental health support in rural Alberta. Integrated care with a behavioral health consultant (BHC) presents as a possible solution. Peer-reviewed literature indicates that rural residents are at a higher risk of suicide, substance abuse, depression, and other serious mental health concerns. They are often at a disadvantage when trying to access mental health support, and over 40% of patients with mental health needs will first seek treatment in a primary care setting. Positive mental health and positive health care outcomes are strongly linked to an individual’s total health, …
Tackling Revenge Porn: Mitigating Destructive Behaviors Among Minors Through Education, Dominique Nichelle Spencer
Tackling Revenge Porn: Mitigating Destructive Behaviors Among Minors Through Education, Dominique Nichelle Spencer
Justice
Revenge porn is at the forefront of the American consciousness now more than ever before. The effects of revenge pom are long-lasting for both victims and perpetrators, yet efforts to address these behaviors remain highly unorganized. A combination of victim blaming, an inability to keep up with technology, and poor legislation have made the process of addressing revenge pom extremely challenging. Although anyone can become a victim of revenge pom, this report will focus on the group in our society which is the most susceptible to these risks and the least protected, minors and young adults. Furthermore, this report will …

Community Policing: Implementing Community Policing In Our Communities, Devin R. Johnson
Justice
Community policing is a philosophy that is geared towards achieving more effective and efficient crime control, reducing the fear of crime, improving police legitimacy, and services that improve the quality of life in the community. A philosophy such as this is believed to hold law enforcement officers to a higher standard of accountability, allows the public to be involved in the decision-making process, and put a greater emphasis on civil rights and liberties. Law enforcement officers in many communities network in order to build a rapport between the law enforcement agencies and the community. Community-Oriented policing addresses the root of …
