The Therapist Can't See You Now: How Paid Sick Leave Policy Can Accommodate Mental Illness In The Workplace, Maddy Goss
The Therapist Can't See You Now: How Paid Sick Leave Policy Can Accommodate Mental Illness In The Workplace, Maddy Goss
Arkansas Law Review
Restaurants have become the “poster child” for why employers should adopt paid sick leave. Advocates suggest that employees without access to paid sick leave often show up to work ill due to their inability to sacrifice pay. Clever protest signs read, “No Boogers in my Burger” and “No Coughing in my Coffee.” Any rational customer would not appreciate the thought of a flu-ridden chef assembling their main course. However, the benefits of paid leave legislation and policies go beyond protecting cheeseburgers from flu germs. Just as employees with the flu require time off for medical attention, employees with mental illness …

The "Great American Crime Decline": Possible Explanations, Maria Tcherni-Buzzeo
The "Great American Crime Decline": Possible Explanations, Maria Tcherni-Buzzeo
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This chapter examines the most important features of the crime decline in the United States during the 1990s-2010s but also takes a broader look at the violence declines of the last three centuries. The author argues that violent and property crime trends might have diverged in the 1990s, with property crimes increasingly happening in the online sphere and thus traditional property crime statistics not being reflective of the full picture. An important distinction is made between ‘contact crimes’ and crimes that do not require a victim and offender to be present in the same physical space. Contrary to the uncertainties …

An Examination Of The Predictors Of Stalking Myth Acceptance And Perpetration, Amber Wallace, Corinne L. Mcnamara
An Examination Of The Predictors Of Stalking Myth Acceptance And Perpetration, Amber Wallace, Corinne L. Mcnamara
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although interpersonal violence, such as stalking, is prevalent among college students, the factors that predict and contribute to a culture of campus violence are still obscure. Parallel to the established link between rape myth acceptance and rape perpetration, research has emphasized the ways in which stalking myth acceptance, societal attitudes, and false beliefs about stalking, normalize and perpetuate its occurrence (Lippman, 2015; McKeon, McEwan, & Leubbers, 2015). To further understand this dynamic, we examined the relationship between demographic variables, stalking myth acceptance (SMA), and stalking perpetration (SP) in a convenience sample of college students. Statistical analyses indicated that gender and …

A Microspectra Analysis Of Synthetic Wig Fibers, Jaclyn R. Beshlian
A Microspectra Analysis Of Synthetic Wig Fibers, Jaclyn R. Beshlian
Student Theses
The goal of this study was to determine whether differentiation between 20 visually similar light brown synthetic wig fibers was possible with the use of a microspectrophotometer (MSP). Visually similar fibers were chosen to display the power of the instrument over the human eye. An MSP is an instrument that has the ability to aid in the analysis of certain microscopical samples. With this particular instrument one is able to collect the absorption and fluorescence spectra of microscopical colored samples without destroying the piece of evidence itself. Prior to any analysis with the MSP, the material of the fibers was …
Functional Secrecy, Laura K. Donohue
Functional Secrecy, Laura K. Donohue
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Many theorists consider secrecy inimical to liberal democracy. Precise examination of the role that it plays in contemporary government, however, including its strengths and weaknesses, has been limited. This chapter, accordingly, lays out a functional theory of secrecy, considering its role in the three branches of government in four contexts: deliberation, information security, law, and adjudicatory processes. Whether and to what extent cloaking information advances the interests of the state and society varies according to how it operates in each category. First, deliberative secrecy carries significant advantages: it can facilitate informed debate and honest exchange, allowing individuals to alter their …

Criminal Arrests In Clark County, Nevada, By Jurisdiction 2006-2016, Elia Del Carmen Solano-Patricio, Caitlin Saladino, William E. Brown Jr.
Criminal Justice
Criminal arrests in Southern Nevada are on a downward trend. Despite a record-setting influx in population across the Las Vegas Valley and the surrounding metro area, officers in each of Clark County’s police jurisdictions arrest fewer people every year. The present study utilizes the Arrest Trends Tool created by the Vera Institute of Justice and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program to measure the number of arrests made over ten years for a variety of illegal activities, including drug abuse, violence and murder, property crimes, sex crimes, alcohol-related crimes, theft, white collar crimes, and other offenses. This data set …

The Cohesive Mechanism Between Criminal Justice And Administrative Law Enforcement In Food Safety Law Enforcement, Zhang Fengxue
The Cohesive Mechanism Between Criminal Justice And Administrative Law Enforcement In Food Safety Law Enforcement, Zhang Fengxue
Food and Machinery
Criminal behaviors that endanger food safety have seriously damaged the lives and health of the people. Law enforcement agencies have encountered many problems in the enforcement of crimes against food safety crimes. The emergence of these problems has seriously affected the linkage mechanism between administrative law enforcement and criminal justice. How to base the connection between criminal justice and administrative law enforcement, rationalize the mechanism of linking the two laws, improve the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in combating food safety crimes, thoroughly eradicate food safety issues, and lay a solid foundation for China's economic construction and social harmony and …
What Happens In The Beginning, Matters In The End: Achieving Best Evidence With Child Suspects In The Police Station, P Von Berg, K Gooch
What Happens In The Beginning, Matters In The End: Achieving Best Evidence With Child Suspects In The Police Station, P Von Berg, K Gooch
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
During the last 30 years, the way in which children give evidence in the criminal justice system in England and Wales has been radically transformed. These reforms have, however, neglected child suspects in the police station. Recent piecemeal reforms to the statutory regime for children in police detention have overlooked a critical stage of the criminal justice process: the police interview. This article critically analyses the policy, practice and law surrounding police questioning of child suspects. It demonstrates that the absence of child-specific guidance when interviewing child suspects is not only out of step with wider reforms, but carries real …

The Validity And Utility Of Violence Risk Assessment Tools To Predict Patient Violence In Acute Care Settings: An Integrative Literature Review, Manonita Ghosh, Di Twigg, Yvonne Kutzer, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Gideon De Jong, Mary Dodds
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
To examine risk assessment tools to predict patient violence in acute care settings. An integrative review of the literature. Five electronic databases – CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, OVID, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched between 2000 and 2018. The reference list of articles was also inspected manually. The PICOS framework was used to refine the inclusion and exclusion of the literature, and the PRISMA statement guided the search strategy to systematically present findings. Forty-one studies were retained for review. Three studies developed or tested tools to measure patient violence in general acute care settings, and two described the primary and …

Dna Recovery From Handwritten Documents Using A Novel Vacuum Technique, Patrick M. Mclaughlin
Dna Recovery From Handwritten Documents Using A Novel Vacuum Technique, Patrick M. Mclaughlin
Student Theses
Investigations of many crimes such as robberies, kidnappings, and terrorism are often associated with the recovery of a paper document which has been written by the perpetrator. Paper can provide a variety of forensic evidence such as DNA, latent fingermarks, and indented writing. The focus of this study was the collection of probative DNA profiles from the text region of a handwritten note through a vacuum suction device without altering or destroying the document. Collection of DNA evidence was carried out in two separate groups. The first group involved 11 volunteers providing a handwritten note sample with unwashed hands. The …

A Sikh Boy’S Exclusion In Australian School: A Phenomenological Study Of Parent’S Response, Kanwarjeet Singh, Jane Southcott
A Sikh Boy’S Exclusion In Australian School: A Phenomenological Study Of Parent’S Response, Kanwarjeet Singh, Jane Southcott
The Qualitative Report
Diasporic relocation and resettlement ideally generate new experiences for diasporic communities and their host societies. At times, host societies (in general) and education (in concomitance) could remain impervious towards the unique cultural practices of diasporic communities, fostering a cultural gap. Such gaps may result in conflicts that impact social engagement, including education, posing cultural and educational challenges for diasporic people. Towards realisation of social justice and whilst balancing diversity, contemporary multi-cultural Australian society and educational institutions may cultivate the enactment of exclusion for students with unique diasporic cultural backgrounds. Hence, the search for equity within Australian education may remain elusive. …
Identifying Opportunities For The Role Of Occupational Therapy In A Correctional Setting, Maxwell Sand
Identifying Opportunities For The Role Of Occupational Therapy In A Correctional Setting, Maxwell Sand
Student Capstone Papers
This study provides insight into the experiences of 7 individuals who had previous first-hand experience working in a correctional setting. Workplace culture related to health and wellness are discussed where participants disclose negative effects the environment posed to their well-being which in turn impacted their job satisfaction. Correctional settings prove not only to be restrictive to inmates, but also to staff members as they limit access to meaningful occupations, roles, and routines. Job demands linked to poor work policies and interaction with inmates are also found to take a toll physically, mentally, and emotionally which further exacerbates symptoms of stress, …
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
The Qualitative Report
There is a lack of qualitative and strengths-based knowledge about the lived experience of transgender women of color in the US. To address this research gap, a Photovoice project was undertaken with five transgender women living in a small urban area. Thematic analysis of the participants’ discussion of their photographs identified three major themes: hope, courage, and resilience. Analysis suggests a framework for understanding these women’s lived experiences and the psychosocial tools that they use to negotiate their daily lives and persevere in the face of interpersonal and structural oppression.
