Societal Factors Enabling Increased Rates Of Sexual Victimization Within Greek-Life, Erica Stroheker
Societal Factors Enabling Increased Rates Of Sexual Victimization Within Greek-Life, Erica Stroheker
Perspectives
Throughout this literature review, I will be discussing sexual victimization rates among students who are affiliated with Greek life. I will attempt to answer whether Greek affiliation correlates with higher sexual victimization rates among female students. I will additionally identify if and how college institutions enable sexual victimization rates. This literature review aims to identify a correlation between sexual victimization and Greek life. Along with using socialist feminism theory to understand sexual victimization, this literature review will also discuss terms such as token resistance, rape myth acceptance, and sexual scripts. In reviewing evidence from past studies and literature reviews, I …
The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
The Relationship Between Marijuana Policy And Prejudice Regarding Adult Black Americans, Caitlin Turner
Perspectives
Marijuana policy has been a crucial debate for many years in America. Even with the legalization of marijuana in many states, Black people are still being arrested at an unjustified rate in contrast to white people. These differences have led to the overrepresentation of Black people incarcerated for this low-level crime as a direct result of the aftermath of the War on Drugs. This paper will analyze the effects of the overcriminalization of marijuana, more specifically among Black people. It will question the extent of marijuana policy on the outcomes of Black people versus white people and will discuss what …
Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples
Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Substance use and abuse is not a uniquely Appalachian problem, but it remains a prevalent social problem for the geographical region. Kentucky has been one of the central states experiencing generations of substance abuse, ranging from methamphetamines to OxyContin to heroin. Eastern Kentucky, which includes a portion of Central Appalachia, has been a focal point for the proposed war against substance use. What remains undemonstrated in studies is exactly how substance abuse differs between the Central Appalachian counties of Eastern Kentucky and the remainder of the state, if any difference exists at all. In this study, the researchers examine how …

Artificial Intelligence: Challenges For Future Growth, Jeffrey Forguson, Jeffrey Forguson
Integrated Studies
This paper discusses the challenges facing artificial intelligence (AI) as it relates to replicating the human brain and how these challenges are perceived by the human employee. Through my research I found approximately 19 challenges facing the growth and future development of A.I. in the workplace. A.I. is in 93% of all global industries and the remaining 7% are seriously looking into it. I reviewed academic sources to determine the challenges facing the advancement of A.I. in the workplace. A.I. extends all the way back to the 18th century Industrial Revolution. Since that time, human employees have feared becoming …
Police Brutality In The United States, Jacob Bell, Jacob D. Bell
Police Brutality In The United States, Jacob Bell, Jacob D. Bell
Integrated Studies
Police brutality is exemplified by using excessive or unjustifiable force by law enfoand federal governments have been against brutality for a long time and have taken action against it. This study examined the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers. The relationship between historical events and present-day societal issues is undeniable. To shed light on the tense dynamic between black males and law enforcement officials in the United States, it's important to examine how the black population has been treated in the past. Throughout history, people of African descent have often been viewed as hostile and aggressive, which has …
In-Schools Suspension (Iss) And Out Of School Suspension (Oss): The Effects And Inequities On Special Education Students, Jennifer Connell
In-Schools Suspension (Iss) And Out Of School Suspension (Oss): The Effects And Inequities On Special Education Students, Jennifer Connell
Integrated Studies
Abstract
The effects of ISS (In school suspension) and OSS (out-of-school suspension) on special education students is a long-debated issue. Using a high school in a rural, suburban area as a foundation, the history of special education in schools, the disproportionate handing out of punishment between general education and special education students, the effects of segregation versus having special education students in general education classes, as well as how to better support special education students in the educational setting will be explored.
In this disquisition, the history of special education in schools and the effects of suspensions on special education …

The 2022 Alabama Executions And The Crisis Of American Capital Punishment, Alexandra L. Klein
The 2022 Alabama Executions And The Crisis Of American Capital Punishment, Alexandra L. Klein
Scholarly Articles
The Death Penalty Information Center described 2022 as “the year of the botched execution” in its 2022 Annual Report. Alabama’s execution errors were especially serious: it attempted to execute four people, botched three of its four executions, and ultimately called off two executions. Alabama’s 2022 executions and its errors are the culmination of common problems in capital punishment across the United States. A full understanding of capital punishment requires an analysis of individual cases, including executions, and analysis of how that case fits within the system of capital punishment. Evaluating a single case may reveal unfairness and arbitrariness, but tracking …

Stories That Kill: Masculinity And Capital Prosecutors' Closing Arguments, Pamela A. Wilkins
Stories That Kill: Masculinity And Capital Prosecutors' Closing Arguments, Pamela A. Wilkins
Articles
The American death penalty is a punishment by, for, and about men: Both historically and today, most capital prosecutors are men, most capital defendants are men, and killing itself is strongly coded male. Yet despite—or perhaps because of—the overwhelming maleness of the institution of capital punishment, the subject of masculinity is largely absent from legal discourse about the death penalty. This Article addresses that gap in the legal discourse by applying the insights of masculinities theory, an offshoot of feminist theory, to capital prosecutors’ closing arguments. This Article hypothesizes that capital prosecutors’ masculinity is strongly influenced both by white Southern …

A Mixed-Method Triangular Approach To Best Practices In Combating Plagiarism And Impersonation In Online Bachelor’S Degree Programs, Alice Elizabeth Johnson Stephens
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study examines the phenomenon of plagiarism and impersonation in online course assignments. Technological advancements, coupled with lower costs and accessibility, have made online courses and programs a practical option for higher education students. Unfortunately, the increasing online enrollment and advancing technology have allowed an increase in the opportunity for students to commit the act of plagiarism and impersonation in online course assignments, thus potentially compromising the academic integrity of online degree programs. This study examines the various practices and approaches of plagiarism and impersonation made available to students. Utilizing the systemic review of literature, the researcher compiles a list …

Trying To Fit In To Get In: Women Working In A Masculinities World, Kimberly D. Bailey
Trying To Fit In To Get In: Women Working In A Masculinities World, Kimberly D. Bailey

In predominately male workplaces, sexualized “horseplay” is common. While this type of conduct can be a tool of gender subordination, it also is a tool for fostering camaraderie and collegiality among co-workers. In other words, some workers, including women, find that engaging in sexual horseplay is necessary in order to “fit in.” This Article critiques the failure of courts to appreciate the peer pressure to “fit in” when they analyze Title VII sexual harassment cases. This oversight is especially evident when courts try to determine whether a plaintiff found particular sexual conduct to be “unwelcome.” If a plaintiff voluntarily engages …
