Families And Friends Of Homicide Victims’ Experiences With The Healthcare System: A Trauma-Informed Perspective, Jeanna Mastrocinque, R.S. Martino, Wanda Foglia, P. Navratil, J. Metzger, E. A. Cerceo

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research

Introduction: Families and friends of homicide victims (FFHV) interact with healthcare systems almost immediately after the traumatic event. Their interactions with healthcare providers can either facilitate healing, have a neutral effect, or compound an already painful experience. When trauma victims are admitted to the hospital, resources are necessarily diverted on their behalf with less consistent attention paid to their families and friends. The interactions surrounding the immediate circumstance as well as experiences in the weeks to months after can have significant long-term impact. This study explores the needs and experiences of FFHV when interacting with the healthcare system to inform …

Some Legal And Practical Challenges In The Investigation Of Cybercrime, Ritz Carr

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), in 2021, the United States lost around $6.9 billion to cybercrime. In 2022, that number grew to over $10.2 billion (IC3, 2022). In one of many efforts to combat cybercrimes, at least 40 states “introduced or considered more than 250 bills or resolutions that deal significantly with cybersecurity” with 24 states officially enacting a total of 41 bills (National Conference on State Legislatures, 2022).

The world of cybercrime evolves each day. Nevertheless, challenges arise when we investigate and prosecute cybercrime, which will be examined in the following collection of essays that highlight …

IRB number: 22-022

Category: Original research vs. In-progress research

Contact person: Jessie Maxwell, MD; [email protected]

Background: In 2021, New Mexico legalized marijuana (cannabinoids) for recreational use. Legalization indicates increasing public health significance given the frequency of use during pregnancy, as in-utero cannabinoid exposure has been linked with decreases in birth weight and alterations in neuropsychological development. As more states legalize the recreational use of cannabinoids, it is important to understand the impact this has on use during pregnancy. Thus, we investigated the utilization of cannabinoids in pregnant individuals before and after recreational use legalization, with the hypothesis that the incidence …

France Through The Eyes Of African Migrants In Contemporary France, Destanee Timmons Apr 2023

France Through The Eyes Of African Migrants In Contemporary France, Destanee Timmons

Undergraduate Research Competition

The impacts of French colonization can be felt worldwide. In the continent of Africa, numerous nations have had their native livelihoods turned on its head during and after the second French colonial empire. During France’s regime over several African nations, France has morphed the traditions of the native’s people and forever left its mark on the continent. Years after their independence, many African nations such as Algeria, Senegal, and Morocco are still affected by the changes implemented during the colonial era. These changes such as suppressing local culture in favor of French ideals resulted in internal turmoil and rampant corruption …

Fenway And Crime: Opportunity, Geographic Differences, And Team Rivalry At Boston Red Sox Games, Cole Mcgovern

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

Although hosting professional sports are often seen as a financial benefit for cities, there are also associated costs. This paper investigates the possibility of interdependence between a variety of crimes and home game days of the Boston Red Sox. When adjusting for game attendance and length, minor assaults charges such as disorderly conduct and simple assault increase city-wide during game days. Despite this, all crime around the immediate stadium area decreases in volume. Additionally, this study examines differences in geographical impacts and crime levels, when a game was played, and games played against the New York Yankees, their historic rival.

Elitism In The Legal World: A Comparison Between The U.K. And U.S.A, Michael Johnson Jr

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

In this paper I will be discussing the various ways that the United Kingdom has played an integral part in creating the way the world looks at and practices common law, while also addressing the systemic racism and elitism entrenched in the U.K. legal system. I will also be comparing the U.K. to the United States as American law was built on the influence of British law and share deep similarities to how minorities are treated due to constant and ongoing systemic disadvantages and legal elitism. I will be discussing how the U.K. and U.S. are trying to address the …

Political Regimes And Firms' Decisions To Pay Bribes: Theory And Evidence From Firm-Level Surveys, Shuichiro Nishioka, Sumi Sharma, Tuan Le

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper makes the most of the observed actions of bribe takers and givers from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys and studies how a taker’s action influences a giver's decision to pay bribes. To motivate our empirical study, we consider Kaufmann and Wei's (1999) Stackelberg game between a tax authority and a firm that undergoes tax inspection. The model predicts that, when the authority can use its action as a credible threat for the firm's profitability, the authority disturbs the firm by inspecting more, and the firm is more likely to pay bribes. Consistent with the theoretical prediction, we find …

An Analysis Of And Response To Current U.S. Immigration Policy, Venita D'Angelo Apr 2023

An Analysis Of And Response To Current U.S. Immigration Policy, Venita D'Angelo

Student Work

In President Bill Clinton's 1995 State of the Union address; we got our first glimpse of immigration being framed as a national crisis (Bill Clinton, 2019). He asserted that "illegal aliens" posed a threat to our country, to law-abiding taxpayers and that more needed to be done to protect our nation's borders (Bill Clinton, 2019). This rhetoric would be utilized by future Presidents like Bush and Trump. When Trump announced his candidacy in 2015, he did so with the assertion that he was going to be tough on immigration, and he made the unfounded claim, like Clinton, that immigrants are …

Does Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy Violate Laws Against Human Cloning?, Kerry L. Macintosh Apr 2023

Does Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy Violate Laws Against Human Cloning?, Kerry L. Macintosh

Faculty Publications

All human beings have mitochondria within their cells that produce energy.1 Most of us inherit healthy mitochondria through the eggs of our mothers,2 but some of us are not so lucky. Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can cause these tiny organelles to function improperly and disrupt tissues that require a lot of energy, like the brain, kidney, liver, heart, muscle, and central nervous system.3 For example, a specific mtDNA mutation induces Leigh syndrome, a condition in which seizures and respiratory failure lead to decline in mental and motor skills, disabil- ity, and death.4 Mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) offers a solution …

Closing The Uptake Gap: Why Missouri Should Pass The Clean Slate Bill, Chloë Driscoll Apr 2023

Closing The Uptake Gap: Why Missouri Should Pass The Clean Slate Bill, Chloë Driscoll

SLU Law Journal Online

The proposed Clean Slate Bill, or Missouri House Bill 352, aims to create an automatic expungement process for eligible individuals in Missouri. Less than one percent of eligible Missourians have had their records expunged under the current system, creating what is known as an “uptake gap” that unfairly perpetuates barriers to housing, employment, and education. In this article, Chloë Driscoll advocates for the passage of the Clean Slate Bill, explaining the problems with the current expungement system and the benefits of closing the uptake gap.

The Constitutionality Of Youth Interrogations, Vanessa Diaz, April Terry Apr 2023

The Constitutionality Of Youth Interrogations, Vanessa Diaz, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Juvenile interrogations are interviews conducted by law

enforcement officers when a youth is suspected of being involved in

a crime. Parents do not have to be notified if authorities are

questioning their children. They also do not need to be notified if

they are witnesses or suspects to a crime. Often, this delays parents'

time in speaking on behalf of their child. Additionally, studies show

many youths are willing to give up their right to remain silent due to

a lack of awareness of the seriousness of the situation. Educating

youth and their parents with programs directed towards youth rights …

Law Enforcement Cardiovascular Health: A Qualitative Study On Law Enforcement Officers' Risk Awareness And The Targeted Mitigation Of Cardiovascular Disease, Gretchen Sue Harvey Lapp

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Cardiovascular disease-related deaths and injuries are prevalent among law enforcement officers (Han et al., 2017; Keeler et al., 2021), with attribution pointing to the strong associations between the inherent stressors of police work directly impacting the psychological and physical health of police officers (Santa Maria et al., 2018; Violanti et al., 2017). As such, several researchers have studied the associations between police officers' perceptions of stress and the presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors. However, there is a current gap in the literature on information examining the relationship between law enforcement officers' cardiovascular disease risk perceptions and their utilized health …
