Prison Rape And Sexual Assault: Prevalence, Vulnerabilities And System Responses, Kylee Synovec, April Terry
Prison Rape And Sexual Assault: Prevalence, Vulnerabilities And System Responses, Kylee Synovec, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
According to a Department of Justice report, more than 200,000 incarcerated persons are sexually assaulted in the United States every year. Some incarcerated people are at greater risk for prison sexual abuse, including groups such as women, those identifying as LGTBTQ+, and youth. Prison rape and sexual assault is not limited to inmate-on-inmate abuse; rather, studies find equivalent offending rates for both incarcerated people and facility staff. Many barriers exist to reporting the abuse, including, but not limited to, being ashamed, fearing the perpetrator’s response, and concern for retaliation by staff. If an incarcerated person makes a report, perpetrators are …
A Gender- Based And Trauma-Informed Approach To Incarceration, Megan Shepard
A Gender- Based And Trauma-Informed Approach To Incarceration, Megan Shepard
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
For decades, women's imprisonment rate has grown twice as high as men's. Enforcement of low-level drug charges and low-level, nonviolent offenses is one of the contributing factors to the increase. Literature indicates that incarcerated women tend to experience poly-victimization and adverse childhood experiences, which causes severe mental health issues and risk behaviors. These adverse experiences compound with the harsh environment of imprisonment that further post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTSD) and depression. Incarceration of women disrupts family systems within their community and creates an influx within their child welfare system. There is a lack of gender-specific reentry programs for incarcerated women. …

Trauma-Informed Court, April Terry, Ziwei Qi
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Trauma-informed practices recognize the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and the need to deliver services that avoid re-traumatization. In the context of the mainstream court system, trauma-informed care is crucial for ensuring that individuals who have experienced trauma are treated with compassion and understanding. Trauma-informed care can help court officials recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma, including the triggers that can cause individuals to experience distress, anxiety, or other mental health challenges, and take steps to address those triggers. The purpose of this research is to map the degree and extent of trauma-informed practices in two judicial districts …
Economic Empowerment For Victims Of Ipv In Rural Areas, Loganne Ditter
Economic Empowerment For Victims Of Ipv In Rural Areas, Loganne Ditter
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a current epidemic affecting women around the country. One in three women will experience sexual assault, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in her lifetime (Showalter, 2016). IPV can take many forms including physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse and can have serious impacts on one’s health. Within IPV research, there have been unique barriers identified in rural areas. These communities have a significant lack of resources including hospitals, domestic violence shelters, and providers that provide trauma-informed care. Recent literature has suggested economic empowerment approaches to promoting an end to IPV in …

Being An Educator: Norwegian Prison Officers’ Conception Of Their Role Regarding Incarcerated Persons’ Education, Helene Marie K. Eide, Kariane Therese Westrheim
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Despite the fact that prison officers are close to the incarcerated persons in everyday life in prison, and therefore will have great impact and influence on the incarcerated persons’ understanding of and motivation for education and training in prison, we still know little about prison officers understanding of their professional role regarding incarcerated persons’ education. This article will investigate how Norwegian prison officers understand their importance as educational actors through the following research question: How do Norwegian prison officers understand their role as actors in incarcerated persons’ education? Building on qualitative interviews with 16 Norwegian prison officers’ the article analyses …

Perceptions Of And Approaches To Social Support Exchange While On Probation And Parole, Andrea Giuffre
Perceptions Of And Approaches To Social Support Exchange While On Probation And Parole, Andrea Giuffre
Dissertations
The vast number of individuals on community supervision (i.e., probation and parole) remains at around 4.5 million Americans and suggests a need for research that delves deep into the nature of challenges faced by this population. Research demonstrates individuals on community supervision tend to rely on others for and provide social support to manage the challenges and conditions of community supervision. Simultaneously, many criminological theories incorporate elements of social support and speak to the importance of social relationships as predictors of criminal behavior, but less is known about the mechanisms underpinning social support exchange. Examination of the delivery and perceptions …
Reproductive Healthcare For Incarcerated Women, Zoe Caldwell, April Terry
Reproductive Healthcare For Incarcerated Women, Zoe Caldwell, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
For years, incarcerated women have received less attention and care than incarcerated men. This problem is especially disparate when responding to the reproductive healthcare of incarcerated women. Most jails and prisons do not distinguish between men’s and women’s healthcare—assuming a one-size fits all approach. Within most jails, pregnancy tests are not administered upon admission and rely on self-report, resulting in a knowledge gap on prevalence rates. Women may not report due to being unaware; they may also be reluctant to disclose due to fear of intervention by child welfare services. Lack of awareness and/or comfort, coupled with minimal healthcare options, …
The Comprehensive Needs Assessment Of Ipv Victims In Rural Communities, Ziwei Qi
The Comprehensive Needs Assessment Of Ipv Victims In Rural Communities, Ziwei Qi
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
A needs assessment for victims of gender-based violence (GBV) is a process of identifying the specific needs and requirements of survivors of GBV. This includes understanding their physical, psychological, social, and economic needs and the services and support systems available/unavailable to them. A statewide survey was conducted to measure the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding the needs of individuals who have experienced violence and abuse. To measure the service needs from stakeholders who are directly and indirectly working with survivors, it will be insightful for researchers to identify the scope and nature of GBV, gaps in existing services, best practices …

A Call For Change: The Social Construction Of Crime, Accountability, And Police Reform., Monique Sims
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Crime in the media is often shaped by social constructionism, which is a theoretical framework that our perceptions of reality are shaped by the social and cultural contexts in which we live. Claim makers utilize concepts of social constructionism to support a narrative of an issue that is out of control and to ignite action on the part of the citizens and the government to save and restore faith in humanity. This paper deconstructs a crime committed to show the concepts used to make this social construction a reality and help society adapt and want to change the future of …

Media, True Crime, And Public Perceptions, Laurelle Augustine
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
If you have ever found yourself confused on where you stand with a current event in the criminal justice world, you’ve probably fallen victim to media framing. All frames are supported by some portion of the public, and often, people tend to support more than one frame at a time. Many true crime consumers and justice system enthusiasts are able to perceive each case differently when the stories are constructed using different frames. For example, through the Faulty Criminal Justice System Frame, O.J. Simpson can be seen as guilty. This is accomplished by using the narrative that pins the criminal …

Resurgence Of Maroons: A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis On Black Students Who Remove Themselves From School, D'Andrea Ashley Heggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Dropping out of school is often viewed as a self-sabotaging event at any age or grade level. From afar, dropping out of school looks as if the decision was impulsive and unintentional. However, for students, the action of dropping out is not a casual decision. This study examines how power and discourse affect the schooling experience of Black students. Using Foucauldian Discourse Analysis this study seeks to highlight how students reclaim their agency by leaning on the historical knowledge of the Black community and its rich moments of resistance. These experiences are evaluated using the Critical Incidents Technique (CIT) as …

This paper seeks to establish and put in use methodology capable of analyzing the significant linguistic bias found within American jurisprudence. It summarizes the limited preexisting empirical work done and adds a new original empirical study on linguistic bias in the courtroom. It examines a large number of cases through various software and examines the prevalence of certain labels (badges of bias). In doing so, this paper seeks to find the most common labels and seeks to determine the amount of emotional variability present within the courtroom. Based on these results, the paper provides recommendations, answering how best to efficiently …

Eyewitness Identification Results In Wrongful Convictions, Alivia Graddy, Grant Shostak
2023 Student Academic Showcase
Wrongful convictions due to eyewitness identification emerge when a witness incorrectly identifies an innocent person as the perpetrator of a crime. Amidst being a common convincing form of proof in criminal trials, eyewitness identification can be undependable due to several factors, such as cognitive deficits, bias, and suggestion. Wrongful convictions based on eyewitness identification can have devastating consequences for the innocent person and their family. Furthermore, the actual perpetrator of the crime is free to commit additional crimes. To address this issue, various measures to improve the reliability of eyewitness identification have been proposed, such as using double-blind lineups, informing …

Publications and Research
This data brief from the Research and Evaluation Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice highlights recent trends in petit larceny in New York City, based on the latest police crime data. Thefts involving items valued under $1,000 have increased by 50% since 2006 and 29% since 2019. Between 2019 and 2022, incidents at major commercial retailers rose sharply by 53%, with drug stores and chain stores experiencing some of the most dramatic increases. While some types of petit larceny had been in decline prior to 2019, many surged again in the years following. These patterns suggest shifting dynamics …

Understanding Involuntary Illegal Online Gamblers In The U.S.: Framing In Misleading Information By Online Casino Reviews, Sinyong Choi
Understanding Involuntary Illegal Online Gamblers In The U.S.: Framing In Misleading Information By Online Casino Reviews, Sinyong Choi
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Although there are many illegal online gamblers in the United States who use offshore gambling sites while falsely believing that their activity is legitimate, few studies have focused on the role of online casino reviews (OCR) who facilitate this activity. These reviews, for a variety of reasons, may present misleading information designed to encourage U.S. players to use offshore gambling sites. Using framing theory and neutralization techniques, we conducted a content analysis of multiple OCR to examine how they present information and justifications regarding the use of offshore gambling sites in the U.S. The findings indicate that many OCR positively …
