Catching Elusive Depression Via Facial Micro-Expression Recognition, Xiaohui Chen, Tony Tie (T.) Luo Oct 2023

Catching Elusive Depression Via Facial Micro-Expression Recognition, Xiaohui Chen, Tony Tie (T.) Luo

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Depression is a common mental health disorder that can cause consequential symptoms with continuously depressed mood that leads to emotional distress. One category of depression is Concealed Depression, where patients intentionally or unintentionally hide their genuine emotions through exterior optimism, thereby complicating and delaying diagnosis and treatment and leading to unexpected suicides. In this article, we propose to diagnose concealed depression by using facial micro-expressions (FMEs) to detect and recognize underlying true emotions. However, the extremely low intensity and subtle nature of FMEs make their recognition a tough task. We propose a facial landmark-based Region-of-Interest (ROI) approach to address the …

“Social Workers By Day And Terrorists By Night?” Wounded Healers, Restorative Justice, And Ex-Prisoner Reentry, Allely Albert Oct 2023

“Social Workers By Day And Terrorists By Night?” Wounded Healers, Restorative Justice, And Ex-Prisoner Reentry, Allely Albert

Articles

Common to many post-conflict societies, former political prisoners and combatants in Northern Ireland are often portrayed as security threats rather than as potential contributors to societal peacebuilding processes. This distrust limits their ability to contribute to the transitional landscape and additionally hinders desistance processes during their reentry from prison. Drawing from the work of Maruna, LeBel, and others on “wounded healers,” this article critically examines the restorative justice work of ex-prisoners who have become involved in leadership roles within community based restorative justice. It is argued that such practitioner work can help former combatants overcome many of the challenges typically …

The Evolution Of Sodomy Decriminalization Jurisprudence In Transnational And Comparative Constitutional Perspective, Ayodeji Kamau Perrin Oct 2023

The Evolution Of Sodomy Decriminalization Jurisprudence In Transnational And Comparative Constitutional Perspective, Ayodeji Kamau Perrin

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, I demonstrate that legal mobilization by activist litigants combined with a comparative methodological jurisprudence has been central to the “transnational legal process” of the generation and diffusion of the sodomy decriminalization norm since the 1950s. My analysis of the transnational comparative jurisprudence relies on a comprehensive legal survey of seven decades of decriminalization jurisprudence (1954–2022), primarily using successful cases. Although the scholarship on the well-known Dudgeon, Toonen, and NCGLE cases often asserts the influence that these cases had on subsequent domestic court constitutional jurisprudence, I suggest that it is the domestic privacy jurisprudence of lobbyists, …

The Second Amendment's "People" Problem, Pratheepan Gulasekaram Oct 2023

The Second Amendment's "People" Problem, Pratheepan Gulasekaram

Vanderbilt Law Review

The Second Amendment has a "people" problem. In 2008, District of Columbia v. Heller expanded the scope of the Second Amendment, grounding it in an individualized right of self-protection. At the same time, Heller's rhetoric limited "the people" of the Second Amendment to "law-abiding citizens." In 2022, New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen doubled down on the Amendment's self-defense rationales but, once again, framed the right as one possessed by "citizens." In between and after the two Supreme Court cases, several lower federal courts, including eight federal courts of appeals, wrestled with the question whether the right …

The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community

The march towards biblical Revelation and restoration began at Calvary and continues today. A comforter and Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE) are given to sustain believers in these times. As educators and more so as followers of Jesus the Christ, there are certain truths we hold. Among them is that we are just passing through this life. In our traversing of this life, we accept the command to spread the good news, utilize our gifts, and do all unto the glory of God. So as educators, the main question throughout the COVID pandemic, with political and social unrest in …

Maine Statistical Analysis Center

The Maine Statistical Analysis Center (SAC), partnered with the Maine Prosecutors Association (MPA) to establish statewide and by-district prosecutorial data for a five-year period (2017-2021). These baseline data are for a variety of criminal cases, charges, and outcomes and this report is the first of its kind for Maine. The MPA sought to detail these baseline figures and trends in an annual report to both support the ongoing work of Maine’s District Attorneys to address serious crime through data-informed decision-making and to enable key stakeholders and the public to better understand how limited public resources are being used by their …

Development And Validation Of The Contemporary Sexual Violence Scale, Corey Frederick Doremus Sep 2023

Development And Validation Of The Contemporary Sexual Violence Scale, Corey Frederick Doremus

Theses and Dissertations

College students face an increased risk of sexual violence victimization and perpetration compared to the general population. Although sexual violence experiences within this population have received substantial attention by researchers, studies typically focus on male perpetrators and female victims. Although a number of measures have been developed to assess male sexual violence perpetration, comparatively few have been developed to measure other types of SV such as female perpetration. The current project aimed to develop an empirically supported measure of sexual violence perpetration which assesses the frequency and severity of engagement in discrete sexual violence behaviors and tactics among individuals of …

Transporting An Evidence-Based Program To A New Country: A Narrative Description And Analysis Of Pre-Implementation Adaptation, Finlay Green, Nick Axford, Ntale Eastmond, Vashti Berry, Julia Mannes, Kate Allen, Lynne Callaghan, Tim Hobbs

Peninsula Medical School

There is a pressing need to prevent and address youth crime and violence owing to its prevalence, harms and cost to society. Interventions with proven effectiveness in doing this exist. Adopting and adapting them in new contexts is potentially cost-effective. However, more research is needed into how to make adaptations that enhance intervention implementation, effectiveness and maintenance in new settings. This article reports the pre-implementation adaptation work involved in transporting Becoming a Man (BAM) from the US to the UK. BAM is a selective school-based youth development program for 12–18 year-old boys that aims to improve school engagement and reduce …

From Larceny And Concealed Births, To Indecent Assault And Attempted Suicide: An Analysis Of Rural Crimes Committed In Three Small Irish Villages Between 1941-1943, Clay Darcy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This article explores an under-researched area within Irish criminology: rural crime during the 1940s. It analyses a volume of recorded rural crimes that were committed in an area encompassing three small Irish rural villages between the years 1941-1943. Set against the backdrop of World War II and Ireland’s state of emergency, many crimes committed were larceny, relatively minor in nature and related to “culprits” living in, or perhaps trying to survive the hardships of war, poverty and rationing. However, other crimes, such as embezzlement, indecent assault, concealment of birth, attempted suicide and sacrilege also feature within the volume. Examining these …

The Downfall Of Capitalism: Its Exploitation Of Mental Health And The Working Class, Joanna Castaneda Sep 2023

The Downfall Of Capitalism: Its Exploitation Of Mental Health And The Working Class, Joanna Castaneda

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Capitalism has been part of American culture for so long, but so has the topic of mental health. America has seen high rates of mental health issues occurring among working-class people of America. High-end companies making billions of revenues have taken advantage of their workers, leaving many to rely on working multiple jobs to get their families by. As for women and minorities, the job setting has not come easy for many as they face major inequality in the workforce and setbacks in wanting to reach positions. Capitalism has shown that income inequality has made life in America difficult, leaving …

Opioid Crisis In Ohio, Alison Ringhiser, Caleb Clayton Sep 2023

Opioid Crisis In Ohio, Alison Ringhiser, Caleb Clayton

Critical Questions

Chronic pain and unnecessary suffering affect many people and healthcare professionals often respond by giving their patients pain relief through a variety of means. Pain assessment goes alongside any vital test medical staff administer to patients, meaning that pain management comes next. Modern technologies allow for innovative practices to help treat patients experiencing chronic pain, but the most common pain-relief methodology is prescription pain-relievers. In the 1990s, opioids were marketed by pharmaceutical companies as reliable pain-relieving drugs. Concerns about their addictive potential were minimized, suggesting they were low-risk substances. Three decades later, evidence has mounted that Americans are in the …

The Social Determinants Of Health And Reentry: An Exploratory Study, Makayla Lewis, Brian Schaefer, Heather Ouellette

The Cardinal Edge

Being released from jail affects a person’s ability to secure basic needs such as health, housing, and employment. Compounding these barriers are issues related to returning to impoverished communities, complicated relationships with families and support systems, and minimal reentry opportunities within jails and upon release. This study explores how the Opportunity Network’s reentry workbook is working to address the social determinants of health and improve perceptions of successful reentry outcomes.

Overrepresented And Under Discussed: From Conceptual Analysis To Practical Implications For Crossover Among Black Girls, Karen M. Kolivoski, Alexandra Miller, Macon Stewart, Sherri Y. Simmons-Horton Sep 2023

Overrepresented And Under Discussed: From Conceptual Analysis To Practical Implications For Crossover Among Black Girls, Karen M. Kolivoski, Alexandra Miller, Macon Stewart, Sherri Y. Simmons-Horton

Journal of Family Strengths

Crossover youth are young people who have experiences of maltreatment and exhibit delinquency, which may or may not come to the formal attention of the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Black youth are overrepresented among the crossover youth population, and evidence suggests that Black girls who experience crossover are particularly in need of specialized attention. Black girls’ experiences within child welfare, juvenile justice, and related systems are unique given the intersection of race and gender in light of issues such as discrimination, disparate treatment, and abuse undergone while in the care of agencies touted to protect them. Guided by …

Migrant Protection Protocols: An Examination Of Its Consequences And Impact On Child Enrollees, Mercedes Valadez Sep 2023

Migrant Protection Protocols: An Examination Of Its Consequences And Impact On Child Enrollees, Mercedes Valadez

Journal of Family Strengths

The Trump administration made major changes to long standing immigration and asylum protocols and practices. Among the changes was the implementation of the 2019 Migrant Protections Protocols (MPP), otherwise known as the “remain in Mexico” program. MPP required asylum seekers to reside in Mexico until their U.S. immigration court hearing. Asylum-seekers, including children, were forced to live in unstable and unsafe conditions. Families were separated and children were forced to endure unanticipated hardships and trauma. Using secondary data of child MPP enrollment from fiscal year (FY) 2019 through FY 2021 and letters from child MPP enrollees, this study explores the …

Journal of Family Strengths

Abstract: Since the summer of 2014, U.S. citizens have become increasingly aware of a new wave of border crossers, children who are making the journey alone, without a parent or guardian, and who left their home countries to find their way to the U.S. These children became known by many names on the news, but their official federal label is Unaccompanied Alien Children. The group makes up 18.7% of the U.S. population. It is the fastest growing group in the U.S. While the overwhelming majority of the Latino origin population in the U. S. is of Mexican, Puerto Rican, …
