Beauty Is Only Skin Deep: An Examination Of Physical Attractiveness, Attractive Personality, And Personal Grooming On Criminal Justice Outcomes, Krystal N. Knox, Michael F. Teneyck
Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive
Research has found that physical attractiveness is related to a host of benefits across life outcomes. Within the field of criminal justice, physical attractiveness appears to afford individuals leniency at various decision points. This research, however, often fails to include measures of personal presentation beyond simply measuring physical attractiveness. The current study extends this line of research by investigating how physical attractiveness, personality attractiveness, and grooming are related to criminal justice processing decisions. Results from negative binomial and logistic regression analyses indicate that when assessed alone, physical attractiveness significantly decreased the odds of criminal behavior by 18 percent, arrest by …

On The Place Of Self-Defense In Public Life: A Hobbesian Critique Of The Supreme Court’S Second Amendment, Rafi Reznik
On The Place Of Self-Defense In Public Life: A Hobbesian Critique Of The Supreme Court’S Second Amendment, Rafi Reznik
Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law
Contemporary Second Amendment law, which originated with the famous Heller decision (2008) and reached a new peak with Bruen (2022), relies on an implicit political theory. This article uncovers and critiques that theory. I argue that the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment jurisprudence positions interpersonal self-defense, and more generally individual response to crime, at the heart of the meaning of American citizenship. The paradigmatic citizen for whom state institutions should be designed is a self-defender, because, per the Court’s interpretive methodology, this is what the American people want. This line of cases thus attempts one of the most challenging feats of …
Population-Level Alcohol Consumption And Homicide Rates In Latin America: A Fixed Effects Panel Analysis, 1961-2019, Guillermo J. Escano, William Alex Pridemore
Population-Level Alcohol Consumption And Homicide Rates In Latin America: A Fixed Effects Panel Analysis, 1961-2019, Guillermo J. Escano, William Alex Pridemore
School of Criminal Justice Faculty Scholarship
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) possesses 8% of the global population but approximately one-third of global homicides. The region also exhibits high per capita alcohol consumption, risky drinking patterns, and a heterogeneous mix of beverage preferences. Despite this, LAC violence receives limited attention in the English-language literature and there are no studies of the population-level alcohol-homicide association in the region. We examined the effects on total, male, and female homicide rates of total and beverage-specific alcohol consumption (22 nations, 1961-2019) and of risky drinking patterns (20 nations, 2005 and 2010). We collected homicide and alcohol data from the World …

Objective: Hirschsprung disease in newborns can be a potentially life-threatening condition, with risks for complications such as Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis. Accessing health information in a readable format for complex diseases demonstrates an important outlet for families to address concerns. While it is important to seek out information from trusted providers, many individuals seek out ways to educate themselves further by using common search engines and turning to the internet. This article will evaluate the readability of relevant articles on Hirschsprung disease and information accessibility to the average health literacy individual.
Methods: A readability analysis of the first 20 Google search results …
Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes
Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
Under Title IX and the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, universities were reminded of their obligation to educate, prevent, and respond to sexual assaults and other forms of gender-based violence. The current study used a survey packet including a Rape Myth Acceptance scale, questions about related education, and a scale rating participants’ level of confidence on seven vignettes. The sample indicated participants were more likely to recognize whether consent was given than they were to recognize whether the vignette met legal standards for sexual assault. The results can provide universities with information to better individualize their sexual assault prevention efforts.
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
IASDR Conference Series
Regenerative theories are used in human and non-human dynamics in a sustainable perspective; however, their potential can flourish new applications to deal with other social challenges. This article explores a theoretical approach to possible uses of regenerative theories applied to the gender-based violence (GBV) system and its relevance in social innovation. The answers in GVB are conducted by the government and civil society institutions that collectively act on the field. Despite the efforts to end violence against women, there is a long road to deconstructing inequalities, and social and cultural structures that evidence and contribute to maintaining the phenomenon. Since …

This position paper brings key Social Design work being conducted in the Design-led Research Centre X at University B in the UK. We position our local and global research in the Social Design landscape, defining the design approaches and methods we have been utilising across projects as well as their limitations. As the Social Design Special Interest Group in the Research Centre, we also clarify what Social Design encompasses in our research and its practice. These were explored through a workshop series with our team and through five case study examples in Brazil, China, India and the UK. The workshop …

Designer's position and authority have long been challenged. However, “Design” has only recently stated responsibility for its direct impact on social structures (Escobar, 2017; Fry, 1999; Maze, 2019). Among many new “Designs”, there is an emerging decolonizing design movement in which members pursue ontological change rather than additive diversifying measures that would only uphold and sustain colonial institutions and systems. This paper focuses on design critiques related to Design’s ability to perpetuate coloniality. Starting from our lived experiences, we expand on how Design alienates different worldviews by promoting, appropriating, and erasing the subaltern population. Following that, we present our methodological …

Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia’S Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley
Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia’S Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley
Mercer Law Review Symposium
The United States criminal legal system employs what is said to be an “adversary” system—one in which opposing parties—the prosecution and the defense—present their evidence and arguments (usually in conflict with one another) to a neutral third party (a judge or jury) for adjudication. The idea behind the adversarial process is that a judge or jury is best positioned to make determinations of guilt or innocence once provided with reliable information from competent, zealous, and prepared advocates on both sides of the podium. At its core, the adversarial system is meant to function as the mechanism by which constitutional principles …

Victor Hugo Was Right All Along: Les Misérables, The Tragedy Of A Punitive Parole System, And A Modern Path Forward, Sarah Gerwig
Mercer Law Review Symposium
Les Misérables, Victor Hugo’s tragic novel, was published over 160 years ago and yet it continues to capture imaginations and sympathies worldwide. It was made into an award-winning film over a decade ago. But before that, Les Misérables was one of the most popular Broadway musicals ever produced, having been viewed by over sixty million people, even beyond the viewership of other popular renditions in film and television. Despite (or perhaps because of) its heartbreaking themes, audiences sympathize with the main characters’ quest for redemption. How easy, in the story, to see the struggles and barriers Jean Valjean encounters—and …

Research shows that organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold leadership roles.1 Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as churches, state legislatures, city councils, state governments, and state and local boards and commissions. Studies have shown that there are numerous benefits to attracting, retaining, promoting, and empowering women within organizations and entities. More specifically, research demonstrates the need for the government—and democratic governance processes in general—to reflect gender diversity accurately within its constituency at all levels.2 Utah is no exception. In fact, in Utah (Code 67-1-11), since 1992, appointing authorities were …
