Infusing Anarchist Pedagogy Into Counselor Education, Andrew Wood
Infusing Anarchist Pedagogy Into Counselor Education, Andrew Wood
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Anarchist pedagogy has existed for well over 100 years, but little has been written on the subject within the counseling profession and the counselor education literature specifically. Anarchist pedagogy offers a direct relationship between education and social justice praxis that many counseling programs espouse, and thus the consideration of an explicitly political pedagogy may benefit the counselor education profession. This manuscript aims to provide a brief overview of anarchist pedagogy, how it fits into the work of counselor education, and how counselor educators can utilize anarchist pedagogy. Limitations for the infusion of anarchist pedagogy into counselor education and future areas …

Strength Under Pressure: Superwoman Schema (Sws) And Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Among Black Women, Jasmin Washington, Dr. Jill Christine Hoxmeier
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a prominent public health issue in the U.S., and evidence suggests that IPV disproportionately affects Black women. Additionally, Black women who are victimized may be reluctant to report and/or seek supportive services. Given these disparities, it is important to understand the context of IPV in the Black community. Although the Superwoman Schema (SWS) conceptual framework’s utility for explaining other health-related outcomes, such as mental health issues, among Black women is emerging, its use to understand the experiences of Black women and IPV in the Black community is limited. In this paper, we provide an overview …

Every 73 seconds another person in America is sexually assaulted. For my senior practicum, I worked at Sexual Assault Resource Center, which provides advocacy and support services, including crisis intervention and counseling, for survivors of sexual violence. My goals for my time with SARC included developing knowledge and skills related to being a trauma therapist, learning about how a nonprofit operates, and gaining an understanding of sex education and sexual violence prevention programs. As a Sexual Assault Advocate and Education and Prevention Intern at SARC, my primary responsibilities involved engaging in community outreach events, delivering educational workshops, and presenting prevention …

Perceptions Of Sex Educators: A Qualitative Analysis, Christina Richardson, Hena Mustafa, Shanell K. Sanchez
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
The fear of children getting victimized by strangers is the basis for several current pieces of legislation, specifically Megan’s law, despite the lack of corresponding empirical data. This legislation causes significant negative consequences for those who are on the registry, especially for juvenile offenders as they have unique challenges they face regarding labeling and societal reintegration. As most juveniles receive most of their sex education in school, and a lack sex education is a contributing factor to the commission of sex offenses, this study aims to explore a proactive method of preventing sex offenses. This study includes exploratory interviews with …

Relevance Of The Remedial Secession Theory For Indonesia's Territorial Integrity, Heribertus Jaka Triyana
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This article aims to analyse the remedial secession theory in international law relevant to the current international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine waged by Russia’s recognition of Donbask and Luhansk independence. It might have legal as well as political impacts on the territorial integrity of a sovereign State such as Indonesia where human rights violations in Papua have become problematic. The analysis in this paper is mainly construed using the paradigm of customary international law as the primary source of international law to find out the relevance of the remedial secession theory in terms of its area, scope, and …

Submission To Justice Canada On The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers
Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents
Justice Canada has been holding an engagement process on the issue of whether an offence of coercive control should be added to the Criminal Code. This offence has been proposed in a series of private members bills, most recently, Bill C-332. This submission argues that it is imperative that actors in all legal domains acquire a nuanced and contextual understanding of coercive control derived from an intersectional analysis that attends to how multiple systems of oppression interact to shape the tactics of coercion and control. However, we do not support the criminalization of coercive control, either as a standalone offence …

Psychological Research on Urban Society
Urban society shown a more heterogenous personal quality compared to rural society such as greater diversity in social status and religious pluralism. Unfortunately, structure of urban society tends to put achievement above morality in academic practices. This can be seen in academic phenomenon such as cheating, and plagiarism. Such practices are only made easier through technology. Since the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic the use of technology is increasing substantially in learning process. In urban region such as Jakarta metropolitan area, Indonesia, the use of internet and technology in university become one of many factors that facilitate academic dishonesty behaviors. This …

Executive Order On The Safe, Secure, And Trustworthy Development And Use Of Artificial Intelligence, Joseph R. Biden
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Section 1. Purpose. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds extraordinary potential for both promise and peril. Responsible AI use has the potential to help solve urgent challenges while making our world more prosperous, productive, innovative, and secure. At the same time, irresponsible use could exacerbate societal harms such as fraud, discrimination, bias, and disinformation; displace and disempower workers; stifle competition; and pose risks to national security. Harnessing AI for good and realizing its myriad benefits requires mitigating its substantial risks. This endeavor demands a society-wide effort that includes government, the private sector, academia, and civil society.
My Administration places the highest urgency …
Virtual Criminal Law Dualism, Itay Ravid, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg
Virtual Criminal Law Dualism, Itay Ravid, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg
Faculty Publications
Since the start of the new millennium, technological and societal changes have initiated a transition from physical to virtual spaces. This farreaching phenomenon has extended to the law and legal institutions, including the criminal law domain. This essay coins the term “virtual criminal law dualism” to describe the dynamic relationship between the virtual and physical spaces in the criminal law sphere. We contend that the transition to virtual spaces has manifested in two distinct aspects. The first relates to formal doctrinal, procedural, and institutional changes that the mainstream criminal law and procedure have undergone due to the emergence of virtual …

140 Characters To Justice? The Promise And Perils Of Using Social Media To Reveal Lay Punishment Perspectives, Itay Ravid, Rotem Dror
Faculty Publications
For centuries, penal theorists have debated two key criminal justice questions: justifying state punishment power and determining proper punishment levels. Moral philosophers offered several theories to address these questions. Over time, calls emerged to move beyond theories and to consider community views on punishment rationales in criminal law and policy design, an approach that gained support alongside meaningful critique. Concurrently, social science advancements enabled empirically deepening understanding of public attitudes about punishment, largely through surveys and experiments.
One domain, however, remained untouched by those calling to assess lay intuitions of justice: social media. Such oversight is puzzling in light of …

Patterson V. Las Vegas Mun. Ct., 139 Nev. Adv. Rep. 35 (Sept. 21, 2023), Aaron Kempf
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court gave two holding in their opinion. First, judicial economy supported consideration of a petition for a writ of mandamus where the issue raised was one of first impression. Here, that issues was whether municipal courts could award fees and expenses under Nev. Rev. Stat. § 41.0393. Second, Nev. Rev. Stat. § 41.0393(8) specifically defined the courts that may award attorney fees and litigation expenses as district courts and justice courts. As a result, the municipal court correctly concluded that it lacked authority to award such fees and expenses to the petitioner. Accordingly, a writ of mandamus petition challenging …

Engagement With Engager: What Factors Are Associated With Attendance In A Complex Intervention For Men With Common Mental Health Problems, Near To And After Release From Prison, Charlotte Lennox, Stuart G. Spicer, Sarah Leonard, Richard Byng
Peninsula Medical School
Engager is a complex, collaborative, but flexible intervention providing psychological and practical support to male prison leavers with sentences of two years or less. Engager was not shown to be effective from an evaluation of standard outcome measures, although full delivery of the intervention was also not achieved. The success of interventions relies partly on how able individuals are to attend, so we used an exploratory analysis of the Engager evaluation data to investigate what factors impacted on the extent to which participants attended Engager sessions. The results showed that problems with alcohol at baseline have a positive relationship with …
Disrupting The Cycle Of Medical Distrust Between Caregivers And The Health Care System For Persons Living With Serious Mental Illness: What Does Misinformation Have To Do With It?, Virginia A. Brown, Christine Thomas
Disrupting The Cycle Of Medical Distrust Between Caregivers And The Health Care System For Persons Living With Serious Mental Illness: What Does Misinformation Have To Do With It?, Virginia A. Brown, Christine Thomas
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Developing transition planning for youth living with severe and persistent mental illness requires the creation, memorialization, and retrieval of appropriate and responsive treatment preferences to meet their needs, especially during a mental health crisis. Regrettably, transition-aged youth at the age of 18 can no longer rely on their support persons (typically family caregivers) to consent to care during a mental health crisis. Due to this, caregivers expressed challenges conveying information about their loved one’s preferences for care (Lavoie, 2018) during a crisis. This lack of access to patient information exchange during a mental health crisis can effect treatment decisions. Caregivers …

Intimate Partner Violence, Socioeconomic Status, And The Media, Christianna Victoria Page
Theses and Dissertations
News media’s communication of social issues can create societal pushes for policy change. This is true regarding femicide and violence against women. How news media communicate demographics such as socioeconomic status (SES) of intimate partner femicide (IPF) victims in a digital space is underexplored. This study is a thematic analysis analyzing how digital news articles communicate the SES of IPF victims. The sample for this study was taken from a population of digital news articles about IPF sources from ten major U.S.-based online news sites and analyzed 50 digital articles for news media’s communication of SES of victims. Results from …
