Serving Those Who Served: Renegotiating Support And Benefits For U.S. Military Veterans With Less Than Honorable Discharges, Mariah Brennan, Emily Graham
Serving Those Who Served: Renegotiating Support And Benefits For U.S. Military Veterans With Less Than Honorable Discharges, Mariah Brennan, Emily Graham
Population Health Research Brief Series
Approximately 1 in 7 veterans are discharged from the military under less than “Honorable” conditions. Veterans with less than “Honorable” discharges experience bias and stigma related to their discharge, which can lead to elevated risk for behavioral and mental health challenges and homelessness. This brief summarizes the different military discharge types, explains how less than “Honorable” discharges can affect veteran health, identifies groups of veterans who are at risk of receiving a less than “Honorable” discharge, and makes policy recommendations for the Department of Defense (DoD), civilian employers, and community healthcare providers.

The Contributions Of Mental Health Issues, Traumatic Brain Injury, And Adverse Childhood Experiences To Recidivism Among Rural Jail Incarcerees, Lauren N. Miley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recidivism should be a major concern, particularly for American jails. The Unites States incarcerates 2.3 million people, a number exceeding rates in any other country. Approximately 90% of those individuals will reenter society at some point, and roughly half of those people will ultimately return to jail. This revolving door costs U.S. taxpayers upwards of $39 billion per year, and undermines public safety. Therefore, breaking this cycle of incarceration and recidivism is of utmost concern, and the focus of this dissertation. Mental health problems, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are three potential risk factors for recidivism …

The secrecy in drafting the bill to replace the Evidence Act is reminiscent of colonial legislation by committee. The lack of consultation has meant that the interpretative confusions in existing law remain unresolved.
Factors Associated With Urban High School Graduation Rates In Tennessee, Keith Hembree
Factors Associated With Urban High School Graduation Rates In Tennessee, Keith Hembree
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study aimed to investigate the relationships, if any, between Ready to Graduate indicator, average ACT scores, chronic absenteeism rates, and school counselor to student ratios in Tennessee's four urban counties surrounding Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, Tennessee. Only eight of Tennessee's 95 counties have a population that is at least 75% urban, according to the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations 2016 Report. The existence of segregated schools inside urban regions and the opportunity gap suggests that more research and data about Tennessee's urban communities are needed, especially in relation to graduation rates. The data analyzed for this study …
An Exploration Of The Correlation Between Students’ Political Orientation And Sport Fandom, Rick Grieve, Jairus Davenport
An Exploration Of The Correlation Between Students’ Political Orientation And Sport Fandom, Rick Grieve, Jairus Davenport
Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management
As of late, researchers in the field of sport psychology have made efforts to deepen our overall understanding of sport fandom and what it entails. As a result, there has been a great deal of research conducted that relates directly to the examination of sports watching behaviors, fans’ motivations behind their consumption of particular sports leagues, and team identification, but, at present, there has been minimal research conducted that has examined whether there is a correlation between one’s sport fandom and political orientation. As such, the current study sought to explore the possibility of there being a relationship between college …

Standing With Asian Clients Affected By Pandemic: Counseling Recommendations Through Msjcc Framework, Hyemi Jang, Jihyeon Choi, Isak Kim
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
As COVID-19 exacerbates racial discrimination against Asian populations in the U.S., mental health concerns among Asians have increased accordingly. Thus, counselors are encouraged to provide culturally competent counseling for Asian clients who experience racial discrimination and its detrimental impacts. This article proposes recommendations for counselors to effectively serve Asian clients based on the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) framework. Counselors can utilize the proposed considerations to alleviate mental health concerns among Asian clients.

The Waiting Period Of Death Row Inmates, Ashlee Patino
The Waiting Period Of Death Row Inmates, Ashlee Patino
Masters Theses
The death penalty is the highest form of capital sentencing and punishment in the United States. Since 1973, a little less than half of U.S. states are responsible for passing death sentences and executions. Nevertheless, the growing number of death row inmates is at an all-time high since the late 70s (DPIC, 2022). Although academia and scholarly research has advanced the general understanding of death penalty sentencing, racial disparities resulting in a death sentence and execution has not been studied as comprehensively. Despite the strides in progress made by academia and scholarly research on the death penalty, there are areas …

Silent Sentences: The Procedural Tragedy Of The Bureau Of Prisons' Sentence Computation Policy, Max Abramson
Silent Sentences: The Procedural Tragedy Of The Bureau Of Prisons' Sentence Computation Policy, Max Abramson
Georgia Law Review
The Bureau of Prisons has systematically lengthened sentences—at times doubling them—for prisoners subject to federal and state sentences for the same conduct. This phenomenon does not stem from any expressed intent on the part of federal or state judges, defense attorneys, the prosecution, or a plea deal. Instead, it arises through silence at a prisoner’s federal sentencing on a key issue: whether the federal sentence is consecutive to or concurrent with a yet-to-beimposed state sentence.
For those facing both a federal sentence and a yet-to-beimposed state sentence for the same conduct, perhaps no other aspect of sentencing has a greater …
The Procedural Tragedy Of Cook V. State: A Call To The General Assembly To Finish What It Started, Paxton Murphy
The Procedural Tragedy Of Cook V. State: A Call To The General Assembly To Finish What It Started, Paxton Murphy
Georgia Law Review
On March 15, 2022, the Georgia Supreme Court decided Cook v. State. This case was a bombshell in Georgia’s postconviction law because it discarded decades of judicial precedent overnight. For years, Georgia’s criminal defendants relied on motions for out-of-time appeals when defense counsel failed to appeal before a deadline or to advise a defendant of his or her appellate rights. The out-of-time appeal procedure was a quick, easy, and fair way to return the defendant to the exact same place he was before the appeal deadline was missed.
The ramifications of Cook were severe. Overnight, every outof-time appeal case in …

Sex And Violence: An Exploratory Study Of Changes In Male And Female Violent Offenders' Choices Of Weapon And Victim Over Time, Lindsey Hutton Nagle
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Violent offenses are part of the history of humankind, and as such, both male and female violent offenders have perpetrated these acts, often with gender differences between male and female offenders present. As more women leave the home and enter the workplace, the gap in gender roles has narrowed, so it follows that this narrowing may also be reflected in the actions of violent offenders. Although there are various explanations for the narrowing of the gender gap in crime, understanding the differences between male and female offenders can help inform gender-based interventions. To address this idea, the type of weapon …

Evaluating The Responsiveness Of Urban Security In The University Area, Varshini Renikunta
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perceptions of safety within one's neighborhood can significantly impact overall health. While certain neighborhood features like broken sidewalks, crime rates, and visible disorder can influence these perceptions, the exact interplay of these factors remains unclear, especially among individuals with disabilities who might perceive themselves at greater risk. Individuals typically opt for routes and spaces they deem safe in the built environment, such as well-lit pathways, areas next to lively storefronts instead of closed facades, or routes that steer clear of potentially unsafe building entrances. How individuals navigate and interact with their surroundings is intrinsically tied to their cognitive perceptions shaped …

Prosecutors Or Helpers: An Institutional Ethnography Of Child Protective Services Casework, Anna Maria Rockhill
Dissertations and Theses
The mission of child welfare is to strengthen the ability of families to care for their children and to protect children and provide aid, services, or referrals to families where maltreatment is said to have occurred. The vast majority of the families who become involved with child welfare are multiply disadvantaged and child welfare is a key feature of the array of public supports for struggling families. However, the institution fails many of the families it serves. Despite recent efforts by those in the field to promote collaboration and engagement, many parents experience child welfare as neither empowering nor helpful …

Veiling Laws And Affiliated Protests In Iran, Claire O'Brien, Megan Schumm
Ohio Northern University International Law Journal
Veiling laws in Iran are the obligation for women to wear hijabs or headscarves and are based on Muslim religious beliefs that women must cover their head to remain modest and submit themselves to God.1 The Quran is not explicit on the topic of hijabs or headscarves and, as a result, some followers interpret it as a personal preference and others interpret it as a requirement.2 Iran’s veiling laws have been the topic of great scrutiny due to a horrific event that occurred on September 13, 2022, where a young woman, Mahsa Amini, was accused by the police of improperly …

The media is considered as one of the most important means that effectively contribute to establishing the principle of trial publicity as one of the most significant principles of fair trials. However, the media influence may exceed its objectives in a way that harms justice. Thus, to balance the necessity of the media presence as one of the components of publicity and the harm it may cause to justice, this research paper comes to suggest Solutions that may contribute to achieving the maximum benefit from the media presence with the least harm, by addressing the topic in three sections. Understanding Incarcerated Education: A Review Of The Digital And Gender Inequality Impacts Of Accessibility And Inclusivity Of Higher Education For Incarcerated Students, Bianca R. Parry Phd
Journal of Prison Education Research
Education in the correctional environment is endorsed as an effective rehabilitative tool linked to reducing recidivism and improving reintegration. Unfortunately, while researchers from the Global North are particularly active on the subject of the accessibility of digital education in corrections, the same cannot be said for the Global South. Of further concern is that few of the studies conducted have focused specifically on incarcerated women’s access to education. As discussed in the literature review to follow, research regarding higher education in corrections has the potential for expanding academics, stakeholders, and policy makers understanding of incarcerated students’ pathways towards education attainment. …

Guided by a strength-based framework and counter-storying lens, we use a qualitative case study approach (Cook-Sather, 2020; Cook-Sather & Motz-Storey, 2016) to explore students’ experiences with a teaching partnership program. A Students as Learners and Teachers (SaLT) model to student-instructor partnership positions students as consultants in a faculty member’s course in which they are not currently enrolled (Cook-Sather, 2020). Following a case study analysis with student and faculty partners in a SaLT program at a HSI, several themes were identified. Themes emerging from student participants included: empathy, personal growth, solidarity, and feedback awareness. Faculty partners’ themes included: receptivity, resistance, and …

Abstract:
The study aimed at determining the determinants of first college major choice for Yarmouk University students, and estimating their scaling values using three different scaling methods, and determining the extent of agreement among these methods. To achieve the purpose of the study, (165) male and female students from the university colleges volunteered to determine the determinants primarily, and two equivalent samples with regard to gender and college type were used to collect the scaling data. The first consisted of (120) male and female students studying a major which is their first choice, the second consisted of (120) male and …
