Features Of Chinese Design Research: An “Object-Paradigm” Interactive Relationship Perspective, Yuhao Jiang, Fangzhou Gu, Danhua Zhao
IASDR Conference Series
How we conceive of design research has changed significantly. Scholars have explored this topic from the perspectives of the boundaries of the influence of the design profession and the shift of design paradigms. However, research on the evolution and features of design research in China has yet to make its mark on the international design research stage. Based on the National Social Science Foundation Art Project's promotion of Chinese design research, an "Object-Paradigm" analysis framework is constructed, revealing an interactive relationship between objects and paradigms of Chinese design research: a well-defined research paradigm focuses on a particular object, and specific …

E-Motioning: Exploring The Effects Of Emotional Generative Visuals On Creativity And Connectedness During Videoconferencing, Tianqin Lu, Jun Hu
IASDR Conference Series
Videoconferencing has become an essential part of business life, and the trend of remote collaboration is set to continue in the future. However, research has shown that the lack of social cues in videoconferencing negatively impacts human social connectedness and hinders the production of creative ideas. Therefore, E-Motioning has been proposed as a system that generates geometrical-based visuals according to users’ real-time emotions, and these visuals are used, as backgrounds for videoconferencing. An experiment was conducted with twenty-four participants to examine the effects of E-Motioning on creativity and connectedness in Microsoft Teams compared to a control condition that uses the …

Digital technology has permeated every aspect of our lives, including the way in which our health records are managed. Currently, healthcare providers are responsible for maintaining records with limited access or control for patients. However, because of the siloed structure of the healthcare system in Canada, patients have little access or control of their medical information Our previous research focused on understanding the patient experience and revealed pain points within their care journey. The key recommendation was to design a comprehensive patient medical record (PMR) which would give patients ownership of their health information. In response, we created a mobile …

Codesign Facilitation For Workforce Satisfaction, Kimberly Tsen, Mauricio Mejía, Danielle Foushee, Michelle Fehler
IASDR Conference Series
In the current work environment, businesses are expecting more than the workforce can provide. This gap in expectation is leading to higher rates of resignation due to increased burnout. To further understand this issue, strategic design methods were utilized as part of the research process. By studying the historical reasons behind these shifts, and interviewing employees that experienced burnout, paradoxically, strategic design methods were also determined to be the solution. A company will go through a design journey facilitated by a strategic design studio so that the unique differences in each company culture are considered. A workshop that is a …

Fictional Brand Design. Evolution, Strategies, And An Attempt To A History Of Visual Identities In Audiovisual Narratives., Francesco E. Guida, Lorenzo Bernini
IASDR Conference Series
Brands tell stories to affirm their values, positioning, and identity. They tell stories that allow people to recognise themselves in them, to share them, to feel part of them. That occurs in the real world as in the world of fiction. The term fictional branding refers to the design and use of brands that do not refer to any existing service, product, company or organisation. They can include any brand referring to products or commercial services, political institutions, military organisations, and more. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive look at the topic through historical and theoretical research and analyse …

Focal Modulation Network For Lung Segmentation In Chest X-Ray Images, Şaban Öztürk, Tolga Çukur
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Segmentation of lung regions is of key importance for the automatic analysis of Chest X-Ray (CXR) images, which have a vital role in the detection of various pulmonary diseases. Precise identification of lung regions is the basic prerequisite for disease diagnosis and treatment planning. However, achieving precise lung segmentation poses significant challenges due to factors such as variations in anatomical shape and size, the presence of strong edges at the rib cage and clavicle, and overlapping anatomical structures resulting from diverse diseases. Although commonly considered as the de-facto standard in medical image segmentation, the convolutional UNet architecture and its variants …

Dynamic Deep Neural Network Inference Via Adaptive Channel Skipping, Meixia Zou, Xiuwen Li, Jinzheng Fang, Hong Wen, Weiwei Fang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Deep neural networks have recently made remarkable achievements in computer vision applications. However, the high computational requirements needed to achieve accurate inference results can be a significant barrier to deploying DNNs on resource-constrained computing devices, such as those found in the Internet-of-things. In this work, we propose a fresh approach called adaptive channel skipping (ACS) that prioritizes the identification of the most suitable channels for skipping and implements an efficient skipping mechanism during inference. We begin with the development of a new gating network model, ACS-GN, which employs fine-grained channel-wise skipping to enable input-dependent inference and achieve a desirable balance …

The Sounds Of Travel: Video Ethnography In Multisensory Tourism Research, Francesc Fusté-Forné
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
While the analysis of the tourist experience often relies on the visual representations, recent research also increasingly calls for a multisensory understanding of tourism research. Soundscapes are an emerging type of tourism attraction that contributes to the protection and promotion of the sense of place. Departing from the use of video in ethnographic practice, this research notes illustrates the features of soundscapes in nature-based tourism research based on video auto-ethnography. Results show that the sounds of water, animals and gastronomy are evocative of people, places and practices in nature-based tourism experiences.
Religious Discrimination Against Minorities: Theories And Findings, Yasemin Akbaba
Religious Discrimination Against Minorities: Theories And Findings, Yasemin Akbaba
Political Science Faculty Publications
One of the established trends in religion and international relations (IR) scholarship is the awareness of a rising level of religious discrimination against minorities. Although there is variation in rates, religious restrictions are widely observed across the globe, including in Western democracies. Scholarship on the restrictions on religious practices has advanced through seeking answers to the following questions: Who discriminates? Who is discriminated against more? What are the causes of restrictions on religious freedom? What are the forms of discrimination? The purpose of this article is to connect the theories and findings of two religious discrimination studies of IR via …

Being Present Without Being Present: An Internet-Based Approach To Providing Pastoral Counseling To An Always Online Generation, Stephen Lyon Woolverton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The increasing reliance that Millennials and Gen-Z Christians have on the internet for almost every question that comes up in their lives should be viewed by pastoral counselors as a cultural context that need to be understood as part of the counseling process and not an obstacle to the counseling process. The emergence of the internet, and the part that it has played in the culture of American Christians who have grown up with constant access to this avenue of communication, has only recently begun to be seen and utilized by pastoral counselors. This research uses the perspective of a …
