Environmental Justice, Resilience Justice, And Watershed Planning, Craig Anthony (Tony) Arnold, Resilience Justice Project Researchers
Environmental Justice, Resilience Justice, And Watershed Planning, Craig Anthony (Tony) Arnold, Resilience Justice Project Researchers
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Watershed planning is an increasingly used governance tool for addressing environmental problems at ecosystem scales of watersheds, which are areas of land that drain to a common body of water. In recent years, watershed planning in the United States has been undergoing an “equity evolution”: watershed planners have begun integrating environmental justice considerations into their plans, often in response to demands by low-income communities of color. This Article explores a comprehensive set of principles, processes, analytical tools, and strategies for equitable watershed planning. It integrates a resilience justice perspective with environmental justice. Resilience justice is concerned with the systemically unequal …
The Abolition Of Woman, Lynne Marie Kohm
The Abolition Of Woman, Lynne Marie Kohm
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that modern feminist jurisprudence, while initially aimed at advancing women's rights, has deviated from its original goals and now contributes to the erosion of the unique identity and value of women. This shift is evident in areas such as reproduction, gender fluidity, and motherhood, where legal and academic discourse increasingly deconstructs the concept of womanhood, leading to its potential abolition.
The History Of The Philosophy Of Science And Its Impacts On Modern Science Education, Rebecca Steele
The History Of The Philosophy Of Science And Its Impacts On Modern Science Education, Rebecca Steele
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project explores the question of the philosophical ideas that have given rise to modern conventions of teaching and learning science, and what alternatives exist to these methods. By exploring the philosophies that underpin our modern methods of science teaching and learning, and how have they come to dominate the space of scientific thought, the author has created a website resource for teachers to use for professional development, to learn about the philosophical history of science, in order to fully understand the reasons why science operates within specifically empirical and mechanistic paradigms. The project includes an interactive historical timeline …

Assessing The Progress And Effects Of Exotic Plant Invasions In A Sustainably Used Littoral Forest Fragment In Southeastern Madagascar, Grant Gerhardt
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
While it is important to conserve Madagascar’s unique natural forest environments and the biodiversity they contain, it is also essential that populations reliant on these ecosystems for their income and survival have access to the resources they provide. Sustainable use forests, designated by the IUCN as category VI protected areas, are the solution to meeting both of these conditions. At the same time, it is often the case that the use of forests invites disturbance, which in turn encourages the introduction and establishment of nonnative or invasive plant species. This study examines the degree to which the intensity of use …

Do Blended Learning Systems Improve Student Engagement? A Closer Look At The Role Of On-Site Leadership And Teacher Professional Development, Lou Jackson
Student Theses and Dissertations
The current study examined the effectiveness of blended learning systems in a selected group of five elementary schools in one school district. It analyzed the influence of on-site leadership and teacher professional development on the implementation of blended learning and its influence on student engagement. Although blended learning integrates different teaching methods based on multiple theories, such as Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Behaviorism, this study adopted a guiding theory based primarily on Cognitivism. A qualitative approach with a multiple-case study design was employed. The qualitative data was collected through a semi-structured interview protocol, and individual interviews took place via Zoom with …

Educational Studies Dissertations
This study explored challenges non-Indigenous educators face in centering Indigenous histories
and experiences in anti-racist professional development (PD) workshops for PK-12 educators. It addressed the process of transforming anti-racist PD and the significance of learning from Native American community members. The invisibility of Indigenous Peoples extends beyond physical aspects tied to attempted genocide and includes the invisibility of the political rights of tribal citizens. It encompasses exclusion from historical conversations, anti-racism research, and statistical data. In contrast, the hypervisibility of stereotypical images and inaccurate information starkly contrasts the invisibility of authentic images and accurate resources. The Indigenous methodology of two-eye …

Land Protection And Habitat Restoration As Catalysts For Sustained Community Engagement At The Roslindale Wetlands Urban Wild, Paul Sutton, Nicholas P. Long, Taylor Andrews, Erica A. Holm
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The Roslindale Wetlands “Urban Wild,” a 10-acre forested wetland in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, is the backdrop for a compelling story of land preservation and habitat restoration as primary drivers for sustained community engagement. Originally identified for residential development, this patchwork of City and private land was long neglected and degraded by incompatible adjacent development and illegal dumping. In 2005, the community group Roslindale Wetlands Task Force (RWTF) was formed to start the long, gradual process of cleaning up and advocating for full preservation of the site. However, between 2019 and 2023, an alignment of several strategic joint planning …
Climate Zoning, Christopher Serkin
Climate Zoning, Christopher Serkin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
As the urgency of the climate crisis becomes increasingly apparent, many local governments are adopting land use regulations aimed at minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The emerging approaches call for loosening zoning restrictions to unlock greater density and for strict new green building codes. This Article argues that both approaches are appropriate in some places but not in others. Not all density is created equal, and compact multifamily housing at the urban fringe may actually in- crease GHG emissions. Moreover, where density is appropriate, deregulation will not necessarily produce it. And, finally, green building codes will increase housing costs and …

Community gun violence disproportionately impacts youth in low-income urban neighborhoods. Integrating trauma informed mental health care in community-based out-of-school time (OST) programs is an innovative method of service delivery for these youth. This article provides justification for integrating evidence-based, trauma-informed services in OST programs within communities characterized by high rates of violent crime to minimize the impact of violence exposure on youth mental health. We describe the initial feasibility of a model program, the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Initiative, implemented in a small city in southeastern Pennsylvania. Within the first six months of the VIP Initiative, 95 community residents …

Urban life shapes the mental health of city dwellers, and although cities provide access to health, education and economic gain, urban environments are often detrimental to mental health1,2. Increasing urbanization over the next three decades will be accompanied by a growing population of children and adolescents living in cities3. Shaping the aspects of urban life that influence youth mental health could have an enormous impact on adolescent well-being and adult trajectories4. We invited a multidisciplinary, global group of researchers, practitioners, advocates and young people to complete sequential surveys to identify and prioritize the characteristics of a mental health-friendly city for …
