Recent major investments in infrastructure in the United States and globally present a crucial opportunity to embed equity within the heart of resilient infrastructure decision-making. Yet there is a notable absence of frameworks within the engineering and scientific fields for integrating equity into planning, design, and maintenance of infrastructure. Additionally, whole-of-government approaches to infrastructure, including the Justice40 Initiative, mimic elements of process management that support exploitative rather than exploratory innovation. These and other policies risk creating innovation traps that limit analytical and engineering advances necessary to prioritize equity in decision-making, identification and disruption of mechanisms that cause or contribute to …

Battery Electric Vehicles: Travel Characteristics Of Early Adopters, Yunwen Feng, Jean Daniel Saphores, Hilary Nixon, Monica Ramirez Ibarra
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Do U.S. households with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) drive less or more than U.S. households with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs)? Answering this question is important to policymakers and transportation planners concerned with reducing vehicle miles traveled and the emissions of greenhouse gases from transportation. So far, this question has not been answered satisfactorily, possibly because of the relatively low number of EVs in the U.S. until recently, but also because of methodological issues. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by analyzing data from the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). We apply propensity score matching (PSM), …
Reclaiming Housing For Sustainable And Equitable Development, Ethan Harner, Gabrielle Fraizer, Bradley Wilson
Reclaiming Housing For Sustainable And Equitable Development, Ethan Harner, Gabrielle Fraizer, Bradley Wilson
Undergraduate Scholarship
Across West Virginia, Appalachia, the South, and other regions which have borne the historic brunt of extraction, capital flight, and systemic lack of opportunity, cooperative and community-based solutions to economic challenges have historically and presently been found in and amongst marginalized communities. As a critical component of community wellbeing, development, and prosperity, we situate housing as a necessary component to the understanding of cooperative, grassroots, and solidarity forms of economic organization. In this we explore the ways community-based housing solutions contribute to senses of community and solidarity both within housing structures and the broader community. We place these findings in …
Designed For Life: Unearthing Just And Sustainable Urban Design Through The Daylighting Of Phalen Creek, Corgan R. Archuleta
Designed For Life: Unearthing Just And Sustainable Urban Design Through The Daylighting Of Phalen Creek, Corgan R. Archuleta
Geography Honors Projects
This thesis conceptualizes a relational approach to urban design. Often separated from justice, I argue urban design can shape spaces to enable respectful and reciprocal human and more-than- human relationships. Focusing on Phalen Creek in Saint Paul, Minnesota, I illuminate just and sustainable possibilities between ecologically sustainable and socially inclusive design. Phalen Creek was a natural waterway buried in a pipe during 20th century urbanization to be partially reconstructed through daylighting. The Indigenous and Immigrant stories driving restoration expand urban design’s liberatory potential. Combining just sustainabilities with infrastructure theory and Indigenous Knowledges, I contend urban design offers a relational approach …

Addressing The Physical Demands Of Caregiving Or Children With Disabilities In Nicaragua: A Quality Improvement Collaboration With Fne International, Grace Price
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Many caregivers of children with disabilities experience chronic pain and related symptoms of cumulative physical trauma. This type of phenomenon is particularly prevalent in developing, low-income countries where environmental accommodations may not be as accessible. A quality improvement program, was conducted as a doctoral capstone project to create resources addressing the physical needs of caregivers of children with disabilities in Nicaragua. Program participants included teachers at a school for children with disabilities and special needs in Nicaragua. The primary project deliverable consisted of conducting an in-person workshop to train the teachers with evidence-based methods for preventing chronic pain and other …

From Pantry To Palate: An International Cookbook Unveiling Cultural Comforts Amidst Food Insecurity On Campus, Victoria M. Main
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
Food insecurity among international students in higher education is a pressing issue often overlooked by universities. This project addresses this gap by exploring food insecurity among international students at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) through participant narratives, cultural connections, and recipes collected via interviews. Diverse international students were purposively sampled, reflecting various academic disciplines, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds. Semi-structured interviews facilitated the sharing of personal stories and cherished recipes, which were analyzed to identify recurring themes and cultural commonalities.
The project resulted in the creation of the Falcon Food Pantry International Cookbook, compiling culturally resonant recipes to empower students and …

Climate Zoning, Christopher Serkin
Climate Zoning, Christopher Serkin
Notre Dame Law Review
As the urgency of the climate crisis becomes increasingly apparent, many local governments are adopting land use regulations aimed at minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The emerging approaches call for loosening zoning restrictions to unlock greater density and for strict new green building codes. This Article argues that both approaches are appropriate in some places but not in others. Not all density is created equal, and compact multifamily housing at the urban fringe may actually in-crease GHG emissions. Moreover, where density is appropriate, deregulation will not necessarily produce it. And, finally, green building codes will increase housing costs and so …

Over the past decade, there has been a compelling discourse on transitioning from a rational paradigm, steeped in functionalist and utilitarian models, to a paradigm more aligned with the preservation of natural resources and life. This shift is crucial for addressing the urgent need to integrate sustainable principles into the educational sphere, with the aim of instigating a genuine cultural transformation. Recognizing the global impact of social, economic, and environmental challenges, numerous international entities advocate for an ambitious, complex, and transformative approach to sustainability in education. This scholarly work explores the intricate relationship between education, cultural change, and sustainability. It …
The Convergence Of Ikigai And Design Thinking: Crafting A Purposeful Framework, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
The Convergence Of Ikigai And Design Thinking: Crafting A Purposeful Framework, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
In an era where innovation is not just about solving problems but also about enhancing human experiences and fostering personal fulfillment, the convergence of Ikigai principles with Design Thinking methodology offers a promising avenue for holistic problem-solving and innovation. This paper explores the intersection of Ikigai—a Japanese concept representing one's reason for being—and Design Thinking—a human-centered approach to innovation. We propose a conceptual framework, termed Ikigai-Driven Design (IDD), which integrates the principles of Ikigai with the stages of Design Thinking. IDD comprises five main stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test, each combining elements of Ikigai and Design Thinking to …

The Black Spirit: Theorizing Black Political Theology In The Long Civil Rights Movement, Da'von Anthony Boyd
The Black Spirit: Theorizing Black Political Theology In The Long Civil Rights Movement, Da'von Anthony Boyd
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how Black political theology constructed the philosophical, ethical, and political architecture of the long civil rights movement. By recovering the radicalism of Black political theology in the Black Freedom Struggle, I seek to assess how religion animates the normative theorizing and political mobilization of liberation movements. I closely examine the political theories of its preeminent organizations, including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Nation of Islam (NOI). I offer a theory of Black political theology in defining civil rights praxis by tapping into the cultural synergy of theism with the …
Communities Of Practice To Improve The Delivery Of Contact Tracing For Tuberculosis By Community Health Workers: Antecedents And Mechanisms Of Action, Rachel Hennein
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Background: Community health workers (CHWs) play a key role in expanding access to health services. Providing CHWs with high-quality and relevant training is critical to facilitate their performance. Communities of Practice (CoPs) are a low-cost implementation strategy to promote continuous learning. CoPs are groups of professionals with a common goal who meet regularly, support each other, share knowledge, and innovate solutions. CoPs have been used within the health field to promote the delivery of evidence-based care by healthcare workers; however, there are a few gaps in our understanding of their utility. For example, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of …

The Missing Half: Revisiting Monetary Remedies To Redress Racial Segregation, Olatunde C.A. Johnson
The Missing Half: Revisiting Monetary Remedies To Redress Racial Segregation, Olatunde C.A. Johnson
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay considers whether courts should have awarded monetary remedies in housing desegregation cases. By examining the relief awarded in public housing desegregation cases brought in United States federal courts between 1966 and 1994, this Essay reveals the limitations of the almost exclusive reliance on forward-looking integration relief as a remedy. The Essay argues that there is a “missing half” of remedies that courts never awarded: compensatory damages for the loss of wealth and opportunity caused by housing segregation. Forward-looking remedies that promised integration have often gone unfulfilled. Understanding these “missing” damages is crucial given recent Supreme Court rulings on …
