Through an examination of three key industries—entertainment, athletics, and influencers—this study highlights how female celebrities like Taylor Swift, Caitlin Clark, and Alix Earle act as catalysts for significant shifts in women’s economic and consumer power. Taylor Swift’s impact on the entertainment industry, Caitlin Clark’s role in redefining women’s sports, and Alix Earle’s influence on the social media marketing landscape illustrate the growing authority of women as consumers and change-makers. The Impacts Of Coach-Athlete Relationships On Men’S Basketball Student-Athlete Mental Health Outcomes, Luke D. Martens

Leadership Education Capstones

The relationship between student-athletes and their coaches is dynamic and extends beyond sports performance. This connection holds significant implications for the mental health and overall well-being of student-athletes, shaping their experiences both on and off the court (Short, 2005). Coaches often serve as mentors, role models, and sources of support, influencing various aspects of athletes’ lives beyond their athletic endeavors (Burns, 2019). Understanding the intricacies of this relationship is crucial in addressing the mental health challenges that student-athletes may encounter throughout their academic and athletic journey.

Creatine Supplementation Is Safe, Beneficial Throughout The Lifespan, And Should Not Be Restricted, Richard Kreider, Andrew Jagim, Jose Antonio, Douglas Kalman, Chad Kerksick, Jeffrey R. Stout, Robert Wildman, Rick Collins, Diego A. Bonilla

Faculty Scholarship

As researchers investigating creatine supplementation, we have become increasingly concerned about reports that government agencies are attempting to restrict the sale of dietary supplements, including dietary supplements containing creatine, to children and adolescents. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell in the human body that plays a critical role in cellular metabolism. The daily turnover of creatine is about 2–4 grams/day, depending on muscle mass and physical activity levels (1, 2). About half of the daily need for creatine is synthesized in the body from amino acids (arginine, glycine, methionine) and stored as free creatine or phosphocreatine …

Athlete Decision-Making Process In The Liminality After Career-Ending Injuries, Grace Davie Apr 2025

Athlete Decision-Making Process In The Liminality After Career-Ending Injuries, Grace Davie

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the decision-making process of athletes in the liminal period immediately following career-ending injuries. While existing research has examined transition challenges and coping strategies, there remains a critical gap in understanding how athletes actively make decisions that shape their post-sport trajectories during this crucial period. Using Crisis Decision Theory (CDT) as a theoretical framework, this study investigated athletes' overall experience, support systems, injury severity assessment, and response option determination and evaluation during the immediate post-injury decision-making process. Key findings demonstrated that athletes' decision-making processes closely aligned with CDT's three-stage framework: assessing injury severity, determining response options, and …

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson Apr 2025

Does Name, Image, And Likeness Increase Gender Inequality In College Athletics?, Aimee Christenson

Political Science Theses and Capstones

In June of 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association adopted its first interim policy regarding Name, Image, and Likeness. From here, college athletes have been able to benefit from opportunities regarding their brand as an athlete. While this development has been historic in its expansion of rights to athletes, it highlights the inequities between male and female athletes. Title IX requires equal opportunity for male and female students. This research raises questions about whether NIL is increasing the disparity between male and female athletes. To answer this question, I looked at NIL data collected by Kyle Ems on the NIL …

Play And Martial Arts: Play Philosophy's Perspective On Fighting, Joseph Rn Donahoe Apr 2025

Play And Martial Arts: Play Philosophy's Perspective On Fighting, Joseph Rn Donahoe

Honors Thesis

Play philosophy stands at the heart of all martial arts interactions through the medium of play fighting. Moreover, when examined more closely, martial arts serves as the culminating form of play fighting and the idealized representation of play philosophy. Simply put, martial arts embodies play thoroughly, and the specific style of combat-based martial arts serves as the perfect example of play fighting. To understand how the movement from play fighting to martial arts evolved, we can examine the inherent structure of play through authors such as Wojciech Cynarski, Scott Erble, and Kurt Riezler. Applying Scott Eberle’s elements of play and …

Preserving Pixels: The Dmca And The Quest To Preserve Video Gaming’S Legacy, Samantha Ennis Apr 2025

Preserving Pixels: The Dmca And The Quest To Preserve Video Gaming’S Legacy, Samantha Ennis

Washington and Lee Law Review

Video games have fundamentally transformed how humans learn, play, and connect, becoming essential cultural artifacts that warrant careful preservation for present and future study. Yet, video game preservation has emerged as a critical challenge for cultural institutions as the medium rapidly evolves and early works become inaccessible due to technological obsolescence and legal barriers. Without immediate action to address the limitations of current Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”) exemptions for video game preservation, libraries, archives, and museums risk permanently losing access to historically significant games, with studies showing 87% of pre-2010 video games are already inaccessible. Congress should amend the …

Sustainability And Visit Intentions: The Mediating Role Of Identification With The Destination., Nicolas G. Lorgnier

AMTP Proceedings 2025

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework to enhance tourism competitiveness, crucial for recovery post-COVID-19. Despite initial successes, research on SDGs' impact on destination brand image is limited. This study explores SDGs' influence on destination brands and the mediating role of identification in a cross-cultural context, organized around four research questions. The study uses data from online surveys in five countries, analyzed through PLS-SEM. Results show that destination SDGs are the most predictive of visit intention, with tourist SDGs negatively moderating this influence. The study finds that SDG-congruity measures are redundant and do not enhance visit intention …

Women In Baseball: The Decision Between Collegiate Baseball Or Softball, Heidi Berger , '25 Apr 2025

Women In Baseball: The Decision Between Collegiate Baseball Or Softball, Heidi Berger , '25

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

Baseball is both a site of struggle for women as they actively resist gender norms and rebel against the gendered institution of baseball as an exclusively male space, and a place to find community and form identities playing the game they love. This dichotomy underlies the choice female baseball players make to continue down their chosen path or conform to societal expectations and switch to softball. However, the factors that contribute to this decision are underexplored. Therefore, an investigation into female baseball players and why they ultimately choose to play the “girls” (softball) or “boys” (baseball) version of a sport …

The Experiences Of Disabled People In Physical Education, Wesley J. Wilson (Editor), Justin A. Haegele (Editor)

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Books

Bringing together a set of first- person accounts of physical education from the perspectives of disabled children and adults, this book puts disabled people’s voices in the foreground.

The book provides a rich set of case study material that deepens our understanding of the experiences of disabled people and challenges students, researchers, and practitioners to reflect critically upon their own positionality. The first part of the book discusses the ways in which disability has been conceptualized, how the voices of disabled people have sometimes been marginalized, and how nondisability power has historically framed the narratives of disabled people in physical …

Reducing Information Asymmetry: Economic Value Of Airbnb Signals In A Small College Town, Hatice Sena Akkurt

Theses and Dissertations

Trust is the backbone of platform operations. Airbnb platform designers implement various methods including trust-building mechanisms, user interface (UI) artifacts, and reputation management systems. Previous research has explored trust in Airbnb, yet little is known about the economic value of trust indicators in smaller cities and rural areas. Thus, this thesis investigates the economic significance of User Interface (UI) artifacts, including the “Superhost” badge, star ratings, and listing photographs, within the peer-to-peer accommodation sector in the Columbia Metropolitan Area. Drawing on signaling theory, we conducted quantitative analysis, to examine the relationship between trust indicators and listing prices, controlling factors like …

What Is Sports Wagering? A Scoping Review, Ji Wan Wan Son Apr 2025

What Is Sports Wagering? A Scoping Review, Ji Wan Wan Son

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Sports wagering has been defined as wagering on the outcome of an athletic competition, specifically a single-game sporting event. In recent years, this definition has proven insufficient to account for the different technological opportunities to engage in sports wagering. The goal of this scoping review was to examine the terms, definitions, and specific gambling activities that comprise sports wagering and to review operationalizations of sports wagering measurement. A systematic search was used to extract (e.g., betting, gambling), definitions, gambling modes (online vs. in-person), encompassed activities, and measurement methods. Seventy-seven articles reveal similarities and discrepancies in the definitions and operations of …

Theses

Qualitative research is a multifaceted process involving data collection, transcription, organization, coding, and thematic analysis. As qualitative data analysis (QDA) tools gain popularity, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated to automate aspects of this workflow. This study investigates researchers’ QDA practices, their experiences with existing tools, and their perspectives on AI involvement in qualitative research. We introduce ChromaScribe, a prototype QDA tool, and gather feedback to assess whether it addresses the limitations of current tools. Through interviews with 16 qualitative researchers, we examine their preferences for traditional coding, AI-initiated coding, and human-initiated coding, exploring factors such as ownership, trust and …
