Identity Discovery And Verification In Artist-Entrepreneurs: An Active Learning Exercise, A. Erin Bass Apr 2017

Identity Discovery And Verification In Artist-Entrepreneurs: An Active Learning Exercise, A. Erin Bass

Organization Management Journal

Entrepreneurship curricula are becoming increasingly more interdisciplinary, with higher education institutions offering a variety of “entrepreneurship and” courses that cross the boundaries into other fields. Despite this, many entrepreneurship curricula are centered on business theory, which is not suitable for nonbusiness students. For example, business students are trained to define success by financial statements and organizational viability, whereas artists enjoy success by achieving creative satisfaction. This article explores the importance of identity to the entrepreneurial process, highlighting the similarities and differences between the artist and entrepreneur identities. Pedagogical in approach, the article demonstrates the utility of an active learning exercise …

How Can Small-Market Teams Survive In Today’S Major League Baseball?, Kelsey Walton Apr 2017

How Can Small-Market Teams Survive In Today’S Major League Baseball?, Kelsey Walton

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

Competitive balance is an issue in every major sport, though Major League Baseball struggles significantly due to the lack of a salary cap. Understandably, the players’ union disagrees and refuses to allow a salary cap, as player salaries would most likely not only be slowed but halted altogether. Major League Baseball contrasts this as perfect competition is preferred though unrealistic. Prior research indicates that competitive balance measures such as the luxury tax and revenue distribution are somewhat effective, though they still do not completely solve the issue plaguing the league, specifically small-market teams.

An Examination Of The Incremental Validity Of The Serve-Specific Core Self-Evaluation Scale Over The Core Self-Evaluation Scale In Predicting Serve Performance, Joshua S. Bowman Apr 2017

An Examination Of The Incremental Validity Of The Serve-Specific Core Self-Evaluation Scale Over The Core Self-Evaluation Scale In Predicting Serve Performance, Joshua S. Bowman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined the relationship of the serve-specific core self-evaluation scale (SS-CSES) with serve performance of inter-collegiate volleyball athletes. The SSCSES is a modified version of the core self-evaluations scale (CSE). It was hypothesized that SS-CSES would be related to serve performance, that SS-CSE would be more related to serve performance than CSE, and that SS-CSE would have incremental validity over CSE when predicting serve performance. Responses to the two scales and selfassessments of server performance were collected online through self-report questionnaire. Additionally, NCAA serve statistics were collected by the researchers. Results indicated that SS-CSE was a stronger predictor of …

Undergraduate Sport Management Students’ Perceptions Of Leadership Skills Through Service Learning, Bryan Romsa, Katelyn Romsa, Jon Lim, Scott Wurdinger

Counseling and Human Development Faculty Publications

Researchers have discovered that service learning affects students’ academic, personal, and social development. However, currently there is a gap in literature analyzing ways in which service learning affects students’ perceived leadership skills. This study examined the effectiveness of service learning on the perceived leadership skills of 74 sport management undergraduate students at a mid-sized, Midwestern, public university using Kouzes’ and Posner’s Student Leadership Practices Inventory instrument, which examines leadership practices in five areas: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The results of this study may help faculty members …

Winning Off The Field: How Social Media Analytics Measure The Sports Industry, Ryan Mcgarvey

Honors Theses

Since Facebook became available to the public, social media (SM) has become the most popular online activity. Currently, 91% of adults are active SM users. Of this 91% of adults on SM, more than 20% of their time online is spent on networking sites like Facebook and Twitter (Weiguo and Gordon, 2014). These powerful tools connect people around the world and show no signs of slowing down.

Discrimination Against Women In The Sport Industry, Kelsey Whalen Apr 2017

Discrimination Against Women In The Sport Industry, Kelsey Whalen

Honors Theses

Discrimination against women in the workplace has been a widespread topic throughout society for quite a few years. According to the National Partnership for Woman and Families (2017), women make 80 cents for every dollar paid to men. While this number statistically represents the wage discrimination women face throughout all industries, it is also important to look at other discriminatory factors women face as well. More specifically in the male-dominated sport industry, we see women represented in extremely low numbers. While women may lack the interest to occupy jobs in this profession, this does not entirely explain the underrepresentation. In …

Taxation Of Income On Professional Team Athletes, Crystal M. Williamson Apr 2017

Taxation Of Income On Professional Team Athletes, Crystal M. Williamson

Senior Honors Theses

Taxation of income for the average person can be a daunting task. However, for professional athletes, this task becomes even more tedious. Professional athletes face the jock tax. This means that athletes have to pay taxes in every state in which they play a game, practice, and perform a service that is part of their contract. Professional athletes, like every United States (U.S.) citizen, are required to pay both federal and state income taxes. Since professional athletes are constantly traveling, their state of residence becomes even more important when allocating their income to the respective state. Many question the constitutionality …

A Novel Mechanism For Art-Sale And Its Impact On Organization Structure, B Shekar Apr 2017

A Novel Mechanism For Art-Sale And Its Impact On Organization Structure, B Shekar

Working Papers

Online social networks (OSNs) enable sharing of ideas and content and thus provide a basis for systematic harnessing of knowledge and knowledge management. OSNs also create weak ties (acquaintances) among its users, and as per theory weak ties are known to enhance creativity. OSNs increase autonomy and autonomy enhances creativity. Creative industries such as art galleries and cultural enterprises thrive on autonomy and creativity. OSN usage can help emulate learnings from such industries in other knowledge-intensive organizations. We propose a novel mechanism for art sale. The command and control nature of these organizations needs to be eliminated in order to …

The Impact Of Culture And Entertainment On City Branding, Megan Leone

Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection

In an era of unparalleled mobility, cities are increasingly compelled to distinguish themselves to attract tourists, investors, and residents. This study explores the influence of cultural and entertainment institutions (such as sports teams, museums, and parks) on city branding, particularly focusing on how these factors affect residents' perceptions of their city. Utilizing Cleveland as a case study, the research examines the extent to which residents' satisfaction with cultural and entertainment offerings correlates with their attitudes towards the city's brand. Findings reveal a positive correlation, indicating that higher satisfaction with cultural and entertainment experiences, along with safety, enhances residents' views of …
