Salary Dispersion And Team Performance In Major League Baseball: A Quantile Regression Analysis, Shane Vyskocil Jan 2019

Salary Dispersion And Team Performance In Major League Baseball: A Quantile Regression Analysis, Shane Vyskocil

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates the relationship between salary dispersion and team performance in Major League Baseball. Player salary data is collected to calculate each team’s annual Gini coefficient from 1998-2016, which is used to represent a team’s level of wage inequality in a given year. The study incorporates a fixed and random effects model, and distinguishes itself from previous research by employing multiple quantile regressions to analyze how the impact of salary dispersion differs depending on a team’s performance level. The results find that the fixed effects model is preferred, and that there is consistently a negative relationship between wage differentials …

The Impact Of Participation In Athletics On Neurological And Psychological Health And The Ability To Compete, Sean Burke Jan 2019

The Impact Of Participation In Athletics On Neurological And Psychological Health And The Ability To Compete, Sean Burke

Writing Across the Curriculum

Through the analysis of data pooled from multiple studies, we identify the relationship between participation in athletics and the likelihood of developing a mental illness or brain injury and how this may impact the longevity of an athlete’s career. Using data from various studies, we find that the prolonged exposure to athletics results in a higher likelihood of developing a psychological or neurological illness both in the short and long term. Additionally, we find that this is often the result of accumulated injuries, both neurological, such as concussions, and physiological, such as tearing muscles or breaking bones. The results, however, …

Student-Athlete Compensation: An Alternative Compensation Model For All Athletes Competing In Ncaa Athletics, Mike Stocz, Nicholas Schlereth, Dax Crum, Alonzo Maestas, John Barnes

Kinesiology

The Ed O’Bannon case (O’Bannon v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2015) has brought student-athlete compensation to the national spotlight. While the NCAA continues to defend its policy of amateurism, the time for college athlete compensation may soon become a reality (NCAA Division I Manual, 2019). The current research argues for a more applied, market-economy compensation model to offer fair compensation to collegiate …
