Redefining Career Communities In Higher Education, June Y. Lee, Sheetal Patel Jan 2019

Redefining Career Communities In Higher Education, June Y. Lee, Sheetal Patel

Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy

This study aims to revisit the understudied concept of career communities. Using mixed methods, this study assesses how university students define and characterize career communities compared to general communities. Based on our interviews (N=25) and survey (N=123), we formally define a career community more narrowly as a group of individuals who share similar career interests or aspirations where one can receive direct or indirect customized benefits through the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and resources. Theoretical and practical implications with future research opportunities have been recommended.

Confederation Of African Football, Michael Goldman, Mlondi Mashinini Jan 2019

Confederation Of African Football, Michael Goldman, Mlondi Mashinini

Sport Management

Representatives of Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Africa officially established the Confederation of African Football (CAF, or the Confederation Africaine de Football) on February 8, 1957, in Khartoum, Sudan. During the subsequent 60-year development of Africa’s administrative and controlling body, CAF grew into the biggest of the six continental federations of FIFA. By 2018, CAF counted 56 associations as full or associate members, representing over 25% of FIFA’s 211 associations, although no African team had reached the semi-final stage of the men’s FIFA World Cup as yet.

This chapter documents the business and management research related to CAF, thereby providing …

Don’T Count Me Out! The Impact Of Mentoring On The Persistence Of African-American Male Students At Predominately White Institutions (Pwis), Darryl E. Hylton Jr. Jan 2019

Don’T Count Me Out! The Impact Of Mentoring On The Persistence Of African-American Male Students At Predominately White Institutions (Pwis), Darryl E. Hylton Jr.

Education Dissertations and Projects

Over the years, more opportunities have been provided to individuals of all ages due to more and easier access to higher education; however, despite these opportunities, major barriers still exist that impact the success of a specific demographic—African-American males. While students of color had the greatest growth in postsecondary enrollment in 4 decades (Fry, 2010), research indicates a deficit trend of undergraduate males of color who fail to graduate once enrolled in colleges and universities (Carnevale & Strohl, 2013). To address this issue, institutions of higher learning have implemented programs, initiatives, and other strategies in an attempt to help these …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper describes the redesign, field-testing, and convergent validity of a practical tool—Physical Activity Campus Environmental Supports (PACES) audit. Methods. The audit includes two parts: (1) PACES-Programs, which is comprised of questions regarding populations served, fees, programs (recreation/fitness classes and intramurals), proximity, adequacy of facilities, and marketing, and (2) PACES-Facilities, which is comprised of questions regarding built environment (aesthetics, bike racks, stairs, and universal design), recreation equipment, staff, amenities, and access. Each item criterion is specifically scored using a five-point, semantic-differential scale ranging from limited to extensive environmental support. A few questions utilize select all that apply for a summed …

Involvement: Assessing Factors Contributing To 'Inactive Athletes' Persistence, Alec Devries

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

The purpose of the study was to discover why students remain enrolled at an institution after departing from their athletic team. This study was conducted at small private, faith-based liberal arts institutions within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Forty respondents participated in a quantitative analysis inquiring about their experiences and satisfaction into their persistence at their institution of enrollment. Findings include the lack of support ‘inactive athletes’ received during their athletic experience, as well as the high value participants placed on their academic experience. Implications for future practice include, a continuous emphasis on student development and academic affairs …

Design Thinking In Health Sciences: Developing Solutions-Oriented Graduates Impacting Local Medical Communities Through Innovative Leadership, Tracey T. Thurnes

Education Dissertations and Projects

Design Thinking in Health Sciences is a multi-year project that focuses on applying design thinking pedagogy across the health sciences in the undergraduate and graduate educational experiences through pop-ups and curriculum infusion at Elon University. In addition, the project serves to partner with local community organizations to provide “real-life” exposure on how design thinking can be implemented to serve the greater community. A convenience sample of graduate and undergraduate health science students completed a version of the INCODE-ICB-v5 survey that measures many of the same identified characteristics of The Ten Principles of Good Interdisciplinary Teamwork. Surveys were distributed pre and …

Pandora's Box Enters The Batter's Box: How The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act's Unintended Consequence Places Mlb, And All North American Leagues, In Tax Chaos, Kari Smoker, Alan Pogroszewski, Kyle Stitch, Kevin Arnold

Sport Management Faculty/Staff Publications

In lieu of an abstract, here is the article's first paragraph:

In the most recent collective bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball (“MLB”) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (“MLBPA”), the word “tax” appears 114 times. Some of these references pertain to MLB’s competitive balance tax.1 First implemented in 2003 in lieu of a salary cap, the competitive balance tax is a three-tiered penalty assessed annually on teams with payroll exceeding a specified amount, or the “base tax threshold.” 2 The assessment increases for each consecutive year the team exceeds the threshold, up to a maximum penalty of …

The Value Of Sports Teams: The Influence Of Coaches, Fans, And Players On Value, Montgomery Gray Jan 2019

The Value Of Sports Teams: The Influence Of Coaches, Fans, And Players On Value, Montgomery Gray

Writing Across the Curriculum

In this paper, I argue that the true value of a team comes from the coaches, fans, and players. These are the people who influence the monetary and competitional success of a team, so are the ones who affect the value the most. Growing up, I have always been a part of a sports team and have cheered for multiple professional teams across numerous sports, but I have always questioned how a team should be valued. I have also always been in business, so I believed that the monetary value was a good source but have found that it goes …

The Uniqueness Of Spectator Sport From A Strategic Management Perspective: The Case For Spectatoritis, Nola Agha, Jess C. Dixon Jan 2019

The Uniqueness Of Spectator Sport From A Strategic Management Perspective: The Case For Spectatoritis, Nola Agha, Jess C. Dixon

Sport Management

This conceptual paper uses a strategic management approach to assess the unique structure of the business of spectator sport. We argue there is a lack of business competition because franchises are simultaneous co-producers, collaborators, buyers, and suppliers. Consequently, mainstream strategic management frameworks that rely on competitive environments are ill-equipped to evaluate the nuances of spectator sport. In response to these observations, we develop multiple new and modified frameworks, including a spectator sport supply chain that inextricably links the participatory and spectator sport segments. Through this hierarchy of training, participants evolve from paid customers to inputs to production. Spectator sport and …

Economic Impact Of Minor Sporting Events And Minor League Teams, Nola Agha, Marijke Taks Jan 2019

Economic Impact Of Minor Sporting Events And Minor League Teams, Nola Agha, Marijke Taks

Sport Management

Inquiry on minor sports has been overlooked in the economic literature despite a long history suggesting that minor events are likely more beneficial than major sports (e.g. Coates, 2012; Daniels & Norman, 2003; Marsh, 1984; Matheson, 2006; Walo, Bull, & Breen, 1996; Taks, 2013). In part due to both increased data availability and a shift towards cost-benefit analysis approaches, recent efforts to develop theory specific to minor events (e.g. Agha & Rascher, 2016; Agha & Taks, 2015) and to conduct studies on minor events (Taks et al., 2011) and teams (Agha, 2013) using more robust approaches occur in the literature. …

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019 The Author(s). Background: The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the potential combined effects of acute exercise and mindfulness mediation on episodic memory. Methods: All data collection occurred in the authors’ laboratory (January to May of 2019). In this three-arm, within-subject design, participants (N=20; Mage=21.6 years) completed three counterbalanced laboratory visits, including Exercise Only, Exercise + Meditation and Control. Learning and memory were assessed from a word-list task. A one-factor repeated-measures ANOVA was computed for two memory outcomes, including the learning outcome (average performance across the 6 trials) and the long-term memory recall (10-minute delay). Results: The …

Using Virtual Reality To Train Athletes, Brian Christoffersen Jan 2019

Using Virtual Reality To Train Athletes, Brian Christoffersen

Master of Arts in Sport Management

Training athletes is an ever-evolving part of sports that, with the growth of the use of technology in sports, has become increasingly complex. Organizations and teams are constantly looking for new ways to be at the forefront of training development. As the development of virtual reality has moved forward, so has the ability to adopt these new technologies to a wide variety of areas. There are multiple systems already in existence that use virtual reality to train athletes. This proposed study aims to shed light on this promising technology to help athletes learn more efficiently and effectively in a safe …

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Sea cucumbers can mitigate some impacts of climate change through digestion of benthic sands and production of calcium carbonate. The projected ecological benefits of sea cucumbers in warmer, more acidic oceans are contingent on the capacities of individuals to acclimate and populations to adapt to climatic changes. The goal of this experiment was to evaluate the degree to which warming waters would impact three abundant species of sea cucumbers on the Heron Reef in Queensland, Australia. We conducted a behavioral assay using three species of sea cucumbers, Holothuria atra, Stichopus chloronotus, and Holothuria edulis. Individuals from each species were subjected …
