Fan Networks In Women’S Sport: An Egocentric Analysis Of Social Fans And Isofans, Matthew Katz, Nicole E. Melton, Risa F. Isard, Nola Agha

Sport Management

Guided by network theory, the purpose of this paper is to explore the consumption networks of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) fans. Through an egocentric network analysis, the authors utilize hierarchical linear modeling to examine the strength of consumption ties among WNBA fans during the 2019 season. Initial results revealed an unexpected finding – the presence of participants who reported having no fan-to-fan ties, whom we term IsoFans. A second sample of men’s basketball fans was then collected to serve as a comparative confirmation of the unexpected result, whereby IsoFans occurred in the men’s sport sample at a much lower …

How Preseason Hope Impacts Fans’ Attendance Intentions And Psychological Well-Being, Hyun-Woo Lee, Seong-Jin Park, Kun Chang, Jun-Phil Uhm

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The authors developed a two-factor preseason hope scale and examined the moderation effects of preseason hope and state hope on the chain of effects from team identification and attendance intention to subjective well-being. A moderated–moderated mediation model was tested (n=224). Consequently, attendance intention mediated the relationship between team identification and well-being. The effect of team identification on attendance intention was stronger for those with lower preseason hope and state hope. The effect of attendance intention on well-being was stronger for those with higher preseason hope. Interaction effects by levels of hope were found among the conditional indirect effects.

Constraint-Based Latent Profile Analysis To Investigate The Physical Activity Market Segments Among Chinese College Students, Jeeyoon Kim Jun 2024

Constraint-Based Latent Profile Analysis To Investigate The Physical Activity Market Segments Among Chinese College Students, Jeeyoon Kim

Journal of Applied Sport Management

A segmentation study is conducted via constraint-based latent profile analysis (based on the hierarchical model of leisure constraint), focusing on Chinese college students. Multi-profile analysis further compares key determinants (i.e., constraints/motives) of physical activity intention by profile. Three profiles emerged: ‘body image-conscious physically active’, ‘noncommittal but achievement-driven’, and ‘constrained but motivated by enjoyment/socialization’. Each profile reports distinctive patterns in perceived levels of constraints, motives, and intention. Constraints/motives identified as determinants for intention vary by profile. Compared to North America, China tends to have more college students seeing physical activity as a task than leisure. Profile-specific marketing strategies are suggested.

The English Premier League (EPL) is the top-tier English soccer system, becoming one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. One topic within the EPL that has garnered significant attention is player compensation and roster construction. Given the varied outputs of players and the spending power of each club, the question becomes whether a specific type of pay structure maximizes on-field performance. Thus, this study aimed to understand the effect of intra-team salary disparity on performance. Results indicated that while rosters tend to be organized in a more compressed manner, salary disparity was not a significant predictor of …

Ncaa Enactment Of A Disciplinary Policy: Uniformity To Regain Institutional Legitimacy, Matteson Landau May 2024

Ncaa Enactment Of A Disciplinary Policy: Uniformity To Regain Institutional Legitimacy, Matteson Landau

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

This article examines issues surrounding decentralized disciplinary systems and inconsistent enforcement against student-athletes who engage in criminal misconduct across the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“NCAA”). The NCAA recognizes the inherent conflicts of interest that arise when institutions are left to regulate their own recruiting practices. To negate these conflicts, the NCAA has established a robust disciplinary system, the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which oversees investigations into violations of NCAA Bylaws, reviews materials provided by the athlete and/or institution, and issues binding rulings which may include suspensions and fines. Yet the NCAA fails to see how the same conflict issues arise …

Visitor Use Management: How The Timed Entry Permit Reservation System At Parks And Protected Areas Influence The Perception Of Sustainable Recreation And Impact Visitor Motivations, Cassandra L. Onufrak

Masters Theses

Parks and protected areas across the United States have undergone substantial change in recent years, specifically pertaining to visitation trends and patterns. National parks have endured rapid growth in park visitation and popular attractions within park boundaries now experience a high visitor concentration and traffic. As visitation within national parks increases, there is a high probability that visitor-related impacts, such as vegetation trampling, wildlife disturbance, soil erosion, and intra-visitor conflict, are also likely to increase. Visitors are more likely to feel crowded and rushed, and ultimately label their park experience as low or poor quality. Through the use of Visitor …

Alumni Support For Ncaa Division I Reclassification, John F. R. Harter, Matthew Howell May 2024

Alumni Support For Ncaa Division I Reclassification, John F. R. Harter, Matthew Howell

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We surveyed alumni of Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in an attempt to measure their support for the school changing classifications in NCAA membership from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Using a contingent valuation method (CVM) mechanism, we show that alumni who intend to attend more football games in FBS are most likely to support the reclassification and support it most strongly. In general, alumni who donate to the university anyway, are out-of-state residents, are former intercollegiate athletes, attend football games, and think athletics are important would favor the reclassification.

Symposium of Student Scholars

INTRODUCTION: In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published updates to their checklists for the milestones children should achieve during typical development, and removed crawling entirely, citing a lack of normative data, inconsistent definitions, and variability timing of crawling onset (1,2). This project collected normative kinematic and spatiotemporal data on typically developing (TD) crawling infants and crawlers with limb loss (LL).

METHODS: Eleven TD infants were assessed every two weeks between onset of crawling and transition to walking. Six LL infants were assessed once without the use of a prosthesis. Infants crawled on a pressure-sensing mat that was …

Independent Sports & Entertainment, Llc V. Fegan, Nicholas R. Kehr

Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal

Independent Sports & Entertainment, LLC ("ISE") brought a claim against Daniel Fegan ("Fegan") for violating a non-compete clause in an asset purchase agreement in California state court. Fegan removed this action to federal court on the basis that the claim was completely preempted by the Labor Management Relations Act. The United States District Court for the Central District of California (the "Court") correctly concluded that the claim was not preempted by the Labor Management Relations Act, because the claim did not exist solely as a result of the National Basketball Association's ("NBA") Collective Bargaining Agreement ("CBA") nor was the claim …

Boogaard V. National Hockey League, Logan P. Desmond, Leeann M. Lower

Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal

Former National Hockey League ("NHL") player Derek Boogaard passed away on May 13, 2011 of a drug overdose. On Boogaard's behalf, his parents brought action against the NHL, its Board of Governors, and league Commissioner Gary Bettman, alleging the NHL acted negligently by allowing Boogaard to become addicted to pain killers, breached their voluntarily undertaken duty to monitor his addiction, negligently failed to protect him from brain trauma, and breached their voluntarily undertaken duty to protect his health. In response, the NHL moved to dismiss the case, which was later converted to a motion for summary judgment. Stating preemption by …

What are the pragmatic factors that make a top 50 nationally ranked team or an elite team in the top 25? This study had 14 head coaches of nationally ranked teams (or previous national rank) and included three former national champions in the participant sample. These coaches were interviewed individually or set into focus groups within the S/SE and Central/Midwest NCAA Regions. …
