Academics Meets Action: Community Engagement Motivations, Benefits, And Constraints, Alicia M. Schatteman
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
In recent years, civic engagement has increased with college students, which has been recognized by the Carnegie Institute and is the focus of this article. One example is the growth in community service and service-learning programs. This study builds on the work of Clary et al. (1996 and 1998) that examined student motivations for participating in community service projects. The purpose of this paper is to determine who participates in a college community service event, what motivates them to participate, what are the constraints, and what are the benefits of participating. Furthermore, this study adds to the literature and uses …

The Impact Of Community-Based Learning In School Guidance, Ericka J. Fisher, Martha Espinal, Sarah Masterson, Julia Savastano, Kristen Vartanian
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
In this article we explore how higher education partners, in this case a small, Jesuit, liberal arts institution, can partner with local public schools through community-based learning in order to increase counseling-based resources in the public schools. Using the case study of one undergraduate course’s field-based experience component, we examine the initial impact on the undergraduate participants as well as potential contributions to the public school. Given the economic constraints facing American public schools, the lack of sufficient guidance and counseling staff within schools, and the growing need for counseling-based services, the need for community partners to contribute to this …

Reading Beyond Research Results: The Hidden Curriculum In A College And Urban High Schools Partnership, Shirley Mthethwa-Sommers
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The article draws from a study of a Gear Up partnership between a predominantly white middle class college and four urban high schools with a majority of low-income students of color. Teacher education candidates participated in community engagement through Gear Up at four urban high schools. The study shows that both college and high school students benefited from the partnership. However, employing internal and anticolonial theoretical lenses reveals the hidden curriculum that the positive results attained from the partnership may serve to buttress the myth of dominant culture’s supremacy.

This paper presents “transition curves,” a framework for analyzing transitions in digital learning environments to support diverse cognitive needs. Transitions—moments of shifting between tasks, contexts, or cognitive states—can significantly impact learning but are often overlooked in digital design, particularly for users with attention, anxiety, memory, and learning differences. Drawing on task switching theory and temporal trajectories, we developed a visualization approach that maps pacing, sequencing, and duration to user experience outcomes. In a workshop with sixteen graduate design students, participants used transition curves to analyze digital learning tools and propose design improvements. The workshop findings show that designers typically see …

Today, many design problems involve complex social and political issues; however, design students often struggle to comprehend the intricacies of these challenges and the depth of existing knowledge. Sociology provides foundational principles for understanding and influencing society, including strategies for supporting communities in combating injustice across various domains. Addressing critical, participatory, inclusive, and speculative design by embedding social justice in design pedagogy allows students/designers to better reflect on the ethical and social consequences of perpetuating stereotypes and provides a starting point for addressing social issues that arise from injustice. We propose that there are three main reasons for incorporating social …

Contemporary design risks becoming irrelevant or complicit in a technocratic agenda that prioritizes evidence over values unless future designers are trained to critically understand technology and its impacts on social, economic, political, environmental, and psychological structures. What role does design play in this process? What stance will tomorrow’s designer embrace? These questions form the backbone of the Theories and History of Design course at Università Iuav di Venezia, which focused on the transformation of everyday actions mediated by technology. At the sociological level, two perspectives collide: a critical approach that acknowledges risks to individual freedoms and a techno-optimist view that …

Pluralism In Design Education: Mental Models And Decision-Making, Jennifer Rittner
Learn X Design Conference Series
Designers for "social good" and "social impact" must critically examine the assumptions and mental models that shape their understanding of the communities they aim to serve. This essay argues that embracing pluralistic, non-fixed conceptions of identity and positionality is crucial for creating truly inclusive and equitable design practices. Through frameworks that deconstruct the idea of fixed identities, designers can surface their unconscious biases and unlearn harmful originating myths about marginalized groups being culturally, socially, cognitively, or physically "deficient." The essay presents flexible positionality matrices that position aspects of identity along spectrums of fixed, fluid, conditional, and temporal states of being. …

From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl
Learn X Design Conference Series
Drawing from my experience as a hybrid practitioner-educator, this pedagogical statement examines how we teach the invisible dimensions of transformative design. While traditional design process diagrams and metaphors—from squiggles to diamonds—effectively structure design activities, they fall short in teaching students how to facilitate transformative design processes. I propose braiding as a complementary cross-cultural metaphor that illuminates the concurrent processes woven through design work. I define four fundamental strands that expert practitioners weave into complex design processes: learning (growing capacity), narrative (weaving stories), relationships (growing connections and trust), and change (rehearsing transformation). This framework emerged from my practice of teaching students …

Núcleo Adela emerged in Chile in 2024 when a group of designers and educators gathered around a common concern: How can feminist design be practiced and taught in the Global South? This question, which challenged the current design state, marked the beginning of a collective project seeking to define itself and express its vision publicly. The process made us question how we wanted to build our identity, driving us to reflect deeply on who we are and how we represent ourselves. This sparked an exercise in co-designing identity, where poetry and openness became key tools in shaping a sensitive and …
