An Empirical Investigation Into The Effect Of Brain Drain “Japa Syndrome” On Agile Practitioners Developing Healthcare Information Systems Software In Nigeria, Yazidu Buba Salihu, Julian M. Bass, Gloria E. Iyawa
Communications of the IIMA
Within the software engineering context, agile approaches encourage customer collaboration, iterative development, and flexibility. However, the mass exodus of highly skilled professionals, known as the “brain drain” or "Japa Syndrome," has emerged as a significant challenge, especially in Nigeria. This phenomenon has particularly impacted agile software development practitioners by undermining project continuity, knowledge transfer, and team dynamics. This study empirically examines the effect of brain drain, “Japa Syndrome,” on agile practitioners developing healthcare information systems software in Nigeria. It employed a qualitative, multi-method approach to gather empirical data from 13 agile practitioners in Nigeria’s healthcare information systems sector. The study …

The Unavoidable Consequences Of Homelessness, Sara K. Rankin, Laura Riley
The Unavoidable Consequences Of Homelessness, Sara K. Rankin, Laura Riley
Utah Law Review
The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent Grants Pass v. Johnson decision sounded the death knell for Eighth Amendment protections for people experiencing homelessness. The decision not only overruled key Ninth Circuit decisions, but also severely cabined the Court’s own precedent, allowing cities across the country to jail and fine people for doing nothing other than surviving in public space when they have no reasonable alternative. The Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment is a powerful symbol of America’s aspiration to realize the dignity and humanity of all its people, especially those who are marginalized and vulnerable to systemic discrimination …

Adjudicating Atrocity: Reading Hitesh Verma V State Of Uttarakhand As A "Landmark" Case In The Judicial Discourse On Caste Violence, Tejaswi Chhatwal
Socio-Legal Review
This article critically examines the Supreme Court’s judgment in Hitesh Verma v State of Uttarakhand (2020) and argues for reading it as a “landmark trial” in the judicial undoing of reform—namely, the statutory changes introduced by the 2016 Amendment to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. Existing socio-legal scholarship on atrocity jurisprudence has shown that the judicial understanding of caste violence and doctrinally instituted evidentiary standards have historically operated to invisibilise caste from crime’s framework. As a result, most instances of caste-based discrimination and violence have not been named as offences of “atrocity” under the …

Perceived Neighborhood Cohesion And Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The U.S., Jennifer W. Robinette, Brooke Jenkins, Nicole-Marie Duran, David A. Frederick
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The U.S. entered a “second pandemic” characterized by depression and loneliness after the initial outbreak of COVID-19. These psychological consequences have driven researchers to identify protective factors during this crisis. The present study tested whether perceived neighborhood cohesion, or that neighbors trust and count on one another, related to fewer depressive symptoms and less loneliness as the pandemic unfolded. Two waves of data were collected online from the same adults in April and October, 2020 (N = 1,928). People who reported greater neighborhood cohesion had fewer depressive symptoms (b = −1.01, p < 0.001) and were less lonely (b = −0.20, p < 0.001), even when considering other pandemic-related risk factors. The association between cohesion and loneliness was even stronger 6 months into the pandemic (b = …

Connectedness And Belonging: An Autoethnography About Military Veteran Transition, Benjamin A. Smet
Connectedness And Belonging: An Autoethnography About Military Veteran Transition, Benjamin A. Smet
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Military veterans often face profound challenges transitioning to civilian life, yet prevailing narratives focus narrowly on PTSD and combat trauma. This dissertation uses autoethnography to broaden that view, blending personal narrative with theory to explore seven interrelated transition stressors: grief and bereavement, loss of military identity, autobiographical memory, service-connected nostalgia, moral injury, stereotype threat, and socialized masculinity and stoicism. These layered stories illuminate the cultural, emotional, and relational dimensions of transition, showing how isolation, disconnection, and loss of belonging shape veteran experiences as deeply as trauma. The analysis demonstrates that healing emerges not from prescriptive programs but from relational practices …

Red, Yellow, And Green: Traffic Signals As Symbols Of Authority In The United States, Alek Villarreal
ENGL 1102 Showcase
Traffic signals are ubiquitous in American society, but traffic laws themselves are violated with extreme frequency. The reasons for such a discrepancy between the widely understood benefits of tools like stoplights and their practical application in the everyday lives of individuals often goes underdiscussed. The aim of this project is to explore how the reciprocal relationship between the authority of large-scale institution like the United States government and the agency of individual citizens can be examined by analyzing both the implementation and public impact of traffic signals. By consulting a variety of previously published academic, journalistic, and commercial sources, it …

Establishing Criminal Justice Safety Teams: Theoretical Foundations, Practical Implementation, And State Leadership, Boaz Sangero, Hagit Turjeman, Yosef Zohar
Georgia Criminal Law Review
In hazardous areas, the need for safety measures is self-evident and substantial efforts are dedicated to their implementation. In the criminal justice system, significant hazards exist, notably the wrongful conviction of innocent individuals, but the need for safety mechanisms has not been internalized. One explanation for this oversight is the mistaken belief that the criminal justice system is nearly error-free. Yet, research has consistently demonstrated that wrongful convictions are not uncommon, representing one of the most significant injustices a liberal state can impose on its citizens and residents. Therefore, it is the duty of the state to introduce robust safety …

Intercultural Communicative Competence In Saudi University Efl (2015-2025): A Scoping Review, Rehan Almegren
UB Journal for Humanities
This review synthesizes findings of empirical research on Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) from 2015 to 2025 in Saudi university EFL contexts. It included research that covered mixed-method, quantitative, qualitative, and investigations that use ICC frameworks, such as Byram’s model and Bennett’s DMIS which are international, to apply to local educational contexts. Findings show a gap between teachers’ theoretical support for integrating culture and how it is implemented in classrooms, compelled by curriculum demands, sensitivities around cultural content, and limited teacher training. Learners often struggle with pragmatics in aspects like politeness strategies and appropriate speech acts which highlights the necessity for …

Bhakti: Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat
The development of cultural tourism greatly depends on the appreciation and involvement of the community in preserving and maintaining their cultural assets. However, over time, public awareness and concern for cultural heritage have gradually declined. One site that holds high historical and cultural value is Candi Penataran, a relic from the Majapahit era that has been recognized as an important cultural and historical tourism destination in Indonesia. Candi Penataran possesses significant tourism potential. In addition to its historical value as a cultural heritage, its strategic location along the same route as the tomb of Indonesia’s Proclaimer, Ir. Soekarno, …

It is essential for teachers, especially history teachers, to possess strong professional competencies, as the outcomes or objectives of history education are closely related to the orientation of learning that focuses on the transfer of values based on various historical facts obtained through research using scientific methods (both historical and archaeological research methods). The need or obligation to continuously develop professional competence requires history teachers in East Java to stay up to date with the latest historical research findings to ensure the development of high-quality teaching materials that align with scientific advancements. More specifically, there is a need for a …

Eksplorasi Seni Dalam Mengasah Pemikiran Kritis Di Pojok Baca Parudongka, Abellia Anggi Wardani
Bhakti: Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat
The transmigration program in Parudongka Village, which began in 2016, has brought forth a young generation facing limited infrastructure, including restricted access to learning resources. This condition underlies the establishment of Pojok Baca Parudongka as an art-based literacy space. The purpose of this study is to encourage critical thinking, foster the courage to ask questions, and enhance reading interest through interactive literacy activities. The research employs Freire’s (1968) cultural action theory framework, which emphasizes dialogue, praxis, and critical consciousness as means to achieve educational liberation. In addition, it adopts Conde’s (2021) art-based approach focusing on narrative inquiry, visual storytelling, and …

Business leaders face pressure from community and government officials to standardize employee wages. Fines and litigation risks can be substantial for employers who fail to comply with equal pay regulations. Grounded in the wage devaluation theory and the equity theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies healthcare leaders use to standardize wages and ensure compliance with equal pay regulations. Participants were four senior healthcare human resource leaders of private nonprofit hospital systems in the United States who have been successful in standardizing wages and in being compliant with equal pay regulations. Data were collected …

Exploring The Black Woman Experience Related To Sexual Practice, Sexual Identity, And Sexual Expression: A Qualitative Study, Ashley V. Rodriguez
Exploring The Black Woman Experience Related To Sexual Practice, Sexual Identity, And Sexual Expression: A Qualitative Study, Ashley V. Rodriguez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study revealed the complex interplay between personal identities and social constructs, focusing on Black-identifying women and their lived experiences with sex, sexuality, and sexual expression. Over centuries, societal influences depicted Black women as hypersexual, simultaneously exposing them to criticism, shame, and judgment for their sexual expression and meaning-making related to sex and sexuality. Consequently, Black women remain a high-risk demographic for unsafe sexual practices and sexually transmitted infections. Using intersectionality theory and Black feminist theory, this study explored how Black-identifying women give meaning to sex, sexuality, and sexual expression as they shape the Black feminine experience. I sought to …

The Political Construction Of Anti-Transgender Policy: A Critical Policy Analysis Of North Carolina State Legislators' Discursive Strategies, David Osworth, Morgan Edlin
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
In recent year anti-LGBTQ policy has been cropping up at the state level across the United States. While these policies have been described as unprecedented, they signal a period of retrenchment for the rights of queer and transgender individuals in the United States. This critical policy analysis of North Carolina state legislation that is decidedly homophobic and transgender examines the discursive tactics of policy actors (i.e. North Carolina Legislators) as they argue these policies during legislative sessions. Through our analysis of legislators’ commentary during House of Representative sessions we identified discursive formations that were considered allied with the LGBTQ community …

Wayward Joy In Queer Femme-Inist Educational Research, Sarah Stapleton, Lindsay Cavanaugh, Jade Crimson Rose Da Costa
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article draws on our experiences with “Femme Educational Futurities,” a dream-mapping (Author 2, 2023), critical arts-based, participatory-informed project about softness in K–12 schools, to explore the boundaries of queer, femme-inist research. We trace how our attempts to enact research softly (Schwartz, 2020) led us towards wayward joy (Hartman, 2019): a messy affective terrain marked by connection, vulnerability, shame, and hope. For each author, we identify what Applebaum (1995) calls a “stop” moment and explore within each instance the convergence of softness, radical love (hooks, 2000) and tender failure (Halberstam, 2011), and discuss what joy means to us as a …

“It Has Made Me Stronger”: The Strengths Of Trans And Nonbinary Teachers, Heather K. Mcentarfer, Matthew D. Rice
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This study draws from two data sets collected from interviews with trans and nonbinary (TGNB) teachers. It highlights the strengths related to gender identity and gender history that the teachers bring to schools and classrooms, as identified by the teachers and the researchers. Strengths identified included multiple ways of supporting LGBTQ+ students (especially TGNB students), connecting with all students, greater self-awareness, and seeing beyond “boxes.” The study adapts Pennell’s (2016a, 2016b) queer cultural capital, introducing and exploring TGNB cultural capital.
