The Effects Of Neoliberalism On Poverty In Egypt, Adham Sameh Elmeligy Jun 2018

The Effects Of Neoliberalism On Poverty In Egypt, Adham Sameh Elmeligy

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of poverty is one of the major obstacles for economic and social development. Also, it is considered one of the key problems that negatively impact global economy. Egypt is one of the countries that suffered from poverty since 1960s. Poverty had widened the gap between the rich and poor. In 1990s, Egypt implemented neoliberal policies- namely structural readjustment and economic liberalization programs- for the sake of enhancing the economy and alleviating poverty. This thesis primarily examines the role of structural readjustment and economic liberalization programs in developing GDP and its negative impact on poverty reduction in Egypt. Furthermore, …

Spaces Of Escape: Sexuality In The Age Of The Internet., Miral A. Mahmoud Jun 2018

Spaces Of Escape: Sexuality In The Age Of The Internet., Miral A. Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an online ethnographic study of anonymous sexual interactions and expressions on the internet in twenty first century Egypt. I draw on how the internet is used as a space of freedom and resistance against the regulatory powers of state, society and religion, which decides how sexuality is expressed, discussed and practiced. I look at how a parallel sex culture is constructed online as opposed to the offline hegemonic, heteronormative sex culture. I observe sexual interactions and expressions in three anonymous internet platforms: an Egyptian chat room and two closed secret social media groups. I explore how alternative …

For a period of 10 weeks, refugees enrolled in the course conducted a community needs assessment (CNA) to identify the resources and needs of a community in Cairo. The refugee students then designed and implemented a community intervention to help meet the needs of their chosen community. The course sought to empower adult refugees by 1) increasing their knowledge and skill level of the CNA …

Domestic Cattle Breeds In Ancient Egypt From The Predynastic Period Through The End Of The Old Kingdom, Katherine Bateman Jun 2018

Domestic Cattle Breeds In Ancient Egypt From The Predynastic Period Through The End Of The Old Kingdom, Katherine Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

From the Predynastic Period through the end of the Old Kingdom phenotypically diverse cattle existed in Egypt. In the literature, cattle from this time period are currently identified by their horns: the longhorn, shorthorn, and hornless. Identifying cattle based on the size of their horns is an inaccurate classification method because horn length and shape varies within a single breed due to factors such as age, sex, and diet, and the words used to describe length (short, medium, and long) are often subjective. This study analyses representations, textual evidence, and physical remains of ancient Egyptian domesticated cattle and attempts to …

The Association Between Personality, Coping And Depressive Symptoms In Adult Patients With Chronic Pain, Reem Mohamed Ahmed Deif Jun 2018

The Association Between Personality, Coping And Depressive Symptoms In Adult Patients With Chronic Pain, Reem Mohamed Ahmed Deif

Theses and Dissertations

As a rising concern in the medical and mental health fields, this study aims to examine predictors of depressive symptoms in a sample of Egyptian chronic pain patients in terms of coping styles and personality traits. Patients with chronic pain are believed to experience different stressors which include, but are not limited to, pain, disability, reduced productivity and financial difficulties. Such factors, in addition to various psychosocial factors, constitute the disease burden of chronic pain. This study examines the degree to which coping styles and personality traits can influence the disease outcome in terms of comorbid depressive symptoms. A total …

Moral And Cultural Discourses Surrounding Women Athletes In Egypt, Yasmeen El-Ghazaly Jun 2018

Moral And Cultural Discourses Surrounding Women Athletes In Egypt, Yasmeen El-Ghazaly

Theses and Dissertations

Choosing my thesis topic and title was both no easy task; yet came naturally to me. My thesis titled, “Moral and cultural discourses surrounding women athletes in Egypt” discusses the effects of social spaces, notions of femininities, masculinities, and gendered power relations, social and cultural stigmas surrounding Egyptian women athletes through exploring the daily challenges of a selection of amateur and professional women athletes residing in Egypt as they embark on changing the various social stigmas, stereotypes and limitations facing them in the everydayness of their lives in Egypt as athletic women. The thesis argues that the interplay of the …

Crossing Of English- Speaking Expatriates Into Galician On Facebook And How Their Stance Taking Indexes Their Identity, Patricia Mrozek Jun 2018

Crossing Of English- Speaking Expatriates Into Galician On Facebook And How Their Stance Taking Indexes Their Identity, Patricia Mrozek

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the use of linguistic resources to take both affective and epistemic stances by English speaking expatriates currently or previously residing in the autonomous community of Galicia. In turn, I consider what those stances index about the identity of the speakers. The historical background outlines how the Galician code came to become stigmatized. As a stigmatized code, one linguistic resource of particular interest to this study is crossing as defined by Rampton (1999, 2009). Crossing and other linguistic resources used such as metalinguistic talk, become to carry indexes through repeated stance-taking moves. Dubois' (2007) stance triangle is the …

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the development of the millennial generation within the liberal arts education setting. It has been demonstrated that the values of different generations periodically change. It is the university's duty to articulate the distinctive sociological, ideological, and psychological variations of each generation in order to provide the most viable educational system. Follow-up researches in different educational systems should be conducted regularly in order to incorporate new data from the rapidly changing millennial generation. This particular research focuses on understanding student development models that adequately demonstrate the effectiveness of a liberal arts education within the MENA region. The …

The findings showed that while teachers where empowered …

Let’S Call The Poll Thing Off: Partial Verdict Forms As A More Reliable Way To Enforce The Double Jeopardy Clause When Juries Deadlock On Counts With Lesser Included Offenses, Ben Osborn Jun 2018

Let’S Call The Poll Thing Off: Partial Verdict Forms As A More Reliable Way To Enforce The Double Jeopardy Clause When Juries Deadlock On Counts With Lesser Included Offenses, Ben Osborn

New Mexico Law Review

The practice of charging lesser included offenses often leads juries to acquit on some levels of a given count but deadlock on others, but many states do not give effect to such acquittals and instead record only the deadlock for the entire count. Because the Double Jeopardy Clause only attaches to formally recorded verdicts, defendants’ double jeopardy rights will thus often depend on whether and how a jury is afforded the opportunity to give effect to such partial acquittals. Some states expressly forbid such partial acquittals, a practice deemed constitutional by the United States Supreme Court. New Mexico not only …

Farmers' Trust In Sources Of Production And Climate Information And Their Use Of Technology, Kristy A. Borrelli, Gabrielle E. Roesch-Mcnally, J. D. Wulfhorst, Sanford D. Eigenbrode, Georgine G. Yorgey, Chad E. Kruger, Laurie L. Houston, Leigh A. Bernacchi, Robert L. Mahler

Journal of Extension

A regionally representative survey of 900 Inland Pacific Northwest farmers showed that farmers trust other farmers and agribusiness most for production management decisions but trust university Extension most for climate change information. Additionally, in responding to questions about use of the Internet and mobile applications for making farm management decisions, many farmers indicated that they use the Internet daily but mobile applications much less regularly to access farm-related information. These results suggest that university Extension personnel have an important role to play in informing farmers about climate change and can do so effectively by using certain digital tools alongside other …

Using Continuous Response Assessment To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Extension Education Products, R. Glenn Cummins, David W. Smith, Coy Callison, Saqib Mukhtar

Journal of Extension

The case study addressed in this article illustrates the value of continuous response measurement (CRM) for testing and refining messages produced for distribution to Extension audiences. We used CRM to evaluate the responses of Extension educators and Natural Resources Conservation Service technical service providers to a video describing greenhouse gas mitigation techniques. By using this assessment method, message producers can identify elements in a video that elicit strong positive or negative responses and then refine communication activities accordingly. Our study highlights the potential of CRM for informing how Extension education products and materials may be preevaluated to ensure more widespread …

Capturing Outcomes Often Overlooked: A Pilot Evaluation Of Florida Individual Contact Teaching, Laura A. Warner, John Diaz, Anil Kumar Chaudhary, Cody Gusto, Amanda D. Ali Jun 2018

Capturing Outcomes Often Overlooked: A Pilot Evaluation Of Florida Individual Contact Teaching, Laura A. Warner, John Diaz, Anil Kumar Chaudhary, Cody Gusto, Amanda D. Ali

Journal of Extension

Extension provides personalized educational services collectively known as individual contact teaching (ICT), yet these services often are not evaluated. This article presents results from pilot testing of an approach for evaluating ICT. Extension representatives and clientele provided data on ICT events, primarily office consultations and landscape site visits. Most client respondents were very satisfied with the services received; had increased their knowledge, skills, and future preparedness to address the applicable issue; and had changed a behavior following the education. These positive findings reveal the importance of evaluating such services. Extension professionals are encouraged to use a personalized evaluation approach such …

In Search Of The Final Head Ball: The Case For Eliminating Heading From Soccer, N. Jeremi Duru Jun 2018

In Search Of The Final Head Ball: The Case For Eliminating Heading From Soccer, N. Jeremi Duru

Missouri Law Review

Soccer encourages and demands one action that puts the head in consistent danger: heading the ball. Thirty percent (30%) of concussions in soccer occur when two players attempt to head the ball at the same time, resulting in head clashes or heads colliding with other body parts or the ground. The desired outcome of an attempted header – head to ball impact – causes untold damage as well. This Article, therefore, argues that soccer’s governing bodies should eliminate the practice of heading from the game. Do-ing so would protect generations of soccer players to come and would limit potentially wide-spread …

What Is Federalism In Health Care For?, Nicole Huberfeld Jun 2018

What Is Federalism In Health Care For?, Nicole Huberfeld

Faculty Scholarship

The Affordable Care Act offers a window on modern American federalism—and modern American nationalism—in action. The ACA’s federalism is defined not by separation between state and federal, but rather by a national structure that invites state-led implementation. As it turns out, that structure was only a starting point for a remarkably dynamic and adaptive implementation process that has generated new state-federal arrangements. States move back and forth between different structural models vis-à-vis the federal government; internal state politics produce different state choices; states copy, compete, and cooperate with each other; and negotiation with federal counterparts is a near-constant. These characteristics …

Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng Jun 2018

Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article develops the concept of “ethnographic advocacy” to make sense of the humanizing, open‐ended knowledge practices involved in the defense of criminal defendants charged with capital murder. Drawing from anthropological fieldwork with well‐respected figures in the American capital defense bar, as well as my own professional experience as an investigator specializing in death penalty sentencing mitigation, I argue that effective advocacy for life occurs through qualitative knowledge practices that share notable methodological affinities with contemporary anthropological ethnography. The article concludes with a preliminary exploration of what the concept of ethnographic advocacy might reveal about academic anthropology's own advocative engagements.

A Performer’S Guide To Poema De Sete Faces, Song Cycle By Jeffrey Perry, Paulo Henrique Campos Silva Jun 2018

A Performer’S Guide To Poema De Sete Faces, Song Cycle By Jeffrey Perry, Paulo Henrique Campos Silva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The American composer Jeffrey Perry composed the song cycle Poema de sete faces (Poem of seven faces), for tenor or soprano and piano, based on the poem of the same name by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of the greatest Brazilian modernist poets of the 20th century. Both Drummond’s poem and Perry’s music were written to be open to multiple interpretations. Together, the possibilities for their interpretation are even broader. This dissertation discusses the art that emerges at the intersection of the poem and the music from the perspective of the singer. I present a biography and an overview of …

Resilience And Complicated Grief, Les Bishop Jun 2018

Resilience And Complicated Grief, Les Bishop

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study surveyed 155 family members or caregivers of patients who had died between twelve and thirty months prior to this study. These patients had been on hospice at the time of their death. The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of hospice defined risk factors for complicated grief. Medical records provided patient demographics information and a verbal (telephone) survey was used to measure the following risk factors: lack of social support, lack of expression of faith, lack of adequate coping skills, multiple losses, substance use, and relationship to the person who died. Descriptive statistics were used …

African Americans Navigating Through Relationships Towards Marriage: A Grounded Theory Study, Moosgar Yrveens Borieux Jun 2018

African Americans Navigating Through Relationships Towards Marriage: A Grounded Theory Study, Moosgar Yrveens Borieux

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore if and how early parent-participant relationships affect subsequent intimate relationships among African American couples. Given the clear gap between African Americans’ attitudes about marriage and the data that show them to be the least likely to be married among other racial or ethnic groups in the United States of America, a unique conceptualization [Life Course Developmental framework, Object Relations theory, Symbolic Interactionism perspective] was used to explore the role that early key figure-child social interactions potentially have in influencing young African Americans interactions with their significant others. To carry out the research …

From Homelessness Toward Self-Sufficiency: A Longitudinal Study Of Families, Elsie S. Lobo Jun 2018

From Homelessness Toward Self-Sufficiency: A Longitudinal Study Of Families, Elsie S. Lobo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Family homelessness is a serious concern in the United States. Recognizing this, increased efforts have been put into housing families through various rapid rehousing initiatives. Little is known, however, about effectively supporting families to transition from these temporary housing programs to sustainable self-sufficiency (Cunningham, Gillespie, & Anderson, 2015). This dissertation is a community-engaged study that examines the needs and experiences of families over time in the No Child Left Unsheltered (NCLU) program, operated by the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino (HACSB). It uses a mixed-methods, longitudinal design to capture the experiences and needs of families over a …

The Role Of Glucocorticoid Signaling In Prostate Cancer Health Disparities, Leanne W. Burnham Jun 2018

The Role Of Glucocorticoid Signaling In Prostate Cancer Health Disparities, Leanne W. Burnham

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

African-American men are more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer (PCa) and die from the disease than other ethnic groups. Glucocorticoid signaling is a contributing biological factor to worse PCa prognosis, and is emerging as a key driver of PCa progression in the absence of androgens. The mechanism involves glucocorticoids binding to glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and bypassing the androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway to activate AR-target genes that promote tumor aggressiveness and therapy-resistance. This is problematic as African-American men have hypersensitive GR signaling and chronically-elevated levels of glucocorticoids linked to cumulative stressful life events. To explore the role of glucocorticoid …

Creative States And Structures, Roff, Lynne May 2018

Creative States And Structures, Roff, Lynne

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper explores the states of consciousness associated with creative work and intimations of specific structures of consciousness that develop over the life of an artist or other creative individual. Creative states are transitory phenomenological experiences that are recurrent and predictable aspects of the creative process. Collectively they form a continuum experienced in the course of a creative work. Creative structures are developmental conditions of consciousness that emerge and incorporate one another in succession. A structure cannot be omitted in individual cognitive development, and, barring damage to the brain, structures are permanent and irreversible.

The Fractal Nature Of Human Consciousness, The Evolution Of The "Global Human," And The Driving Forces Of History, Zdenek, Carl Christopher

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Using chaos, consciousness and meme theories, developmental psychology and family systems theory, this paper explains the fractal structure of the human race and how, every human activity in each era, is influenced by a dominant set of attractors, E.C.+P.P.S.= P.E. (environmental conditions)+(psychophysiological state)=(physical events). Using these disciplines an analysis of the cultural evolution of the human race and a description of the driving forces of human history are presented. In addition these other insights result:

  1. The understanding that the human race, as a whole, is a true dynamical system that follows the principles of chaos theory. And that under the …

Towards An Understanding Of The Mutual Dependency Of Consciousness And Matter, Lucido, Richard May 2018

Towards An Understanding Of The Mutual Dependency Of Consciousness And Matter, Lucido, Richard

Journal of Conscious Evolution

The notion in quantum mechanics that observation causes the collapse of the probability wave function brings consciousness directly into physical theory. To date, however, there has not been an adequate explanation as to how this could be the case, a circumstance that leads some to view this notion as unparsimonious and speculative. This paper attempts to provide an a priori reason for the mutual dependency of consciousness and matter by considering the consequences of the indistinguishably of elementary particles and the temporally extended nature of consciousness. In doing so, it is hoped that an ontology is elucidated which is applicable …

Healing Our Planet, Laszlo, Ervin May 2018

Healing Our Planet, Laszlo, Ervin

Journal of Conscious Evolution

In the last few years, and especially since the economic-financial crisis of the fall of 2008, it has become painfully clear that there is something seriously wrong with our world. The media is full of reports of crises, and various experts offer suggestions on what to do about them. But for the most part the diagnosis and the cure are highly sectoral and partial. There is talk about the financial crisis, and the overall economic crisis. Then of the environmental crisis and various resource-crises: energy, food, water, among others. There is also talk about consumerism, power-hunger, and greed. There is …
