How Trust In The Federal Government Determines Views On Gun Restrictions, Darren L. Mueller Nov 2025

How Trust In The Federal Government Determines Views On Gun Restrictions, Darren L. Mueller

Scholars Week

In this Paper, I will discuss how trust in our federal government influences a person's perspective on gun ownership restrictions. My research question for this topic is: How does Trust in government and political ideology affect views on gun control? It is an important question as gun policy is a heavily debated topic within our news and political circles. The data that I will be using for this comes from the American National Election Survey (ANES). The dataset that I will be using will be from the ANES (2020) dataset. What I expect to find for this research is that …

The Shadow Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On State Comprehensive Universities, Rachel Dolechek, Latisha Haag, Kylie Jank Nov 2025

The Shadow Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On State Comprehensive Universities, Rachel Dolechek, Latisha Haag, Kylie Jank

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

Collegiate faculty at state comprehensive universities (SCU) have an opportunity to reflect on and learn from Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) and Remote Hybrid Teaching (RHT) experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and apply the lessons learned to future emergency or crisis situations. This paper focuses on the shadow of COVID-19 and offers insight into building a learning environment that maintains academic design and prepares for the possibility of ERT or RHT, as well as the increased demand for hybrid courses. Findings from an explanatory, mixed-methods study at an SCU suggest a lack of teaching presence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on …

Advancing Children's Mental Health In Nevada, Kelliann Beavers, Christopher Kearney Nov 2025

Advancing Children's Mental Health In Nevada, Kelliann Beavers, Christopher Kearney

Lincy Institute Events

Nevada ranks 51st nationally in youth mental health access and services, underscoring persistent shortages and disparities across the state. Nearly one in four youths aged 12–17 (23.5%) experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, and 73% did not receive treatment. Approximately 34,000 Nevada youths have reported suicidal thoughts—an urgent call for prevention and coordinated support.

During the 2024–2025 school year, 31.3% of Clark County School District students were chronically absent (missing 10% or more of school days), a challenge closely linked to mental health struggles and socioeconomic barriers.

This community forum provided an opportunity to generate dialogue and …

Improving Empathy And Reducing Stigmatization In Pre-Clinical Physician Assistant Students Towards Patient Taking Opioids For Chronic Pain: The Feasibility Of A Perspective-Taking Peer Role-Play Intervention, Barbie Ann Seton Stephen Nov 2025

Improving Empathy And Reducing Stigmatization In Pre-Clinical Physician Assistant Students Towards Patient Taking Opioids For Chronic Pain: The Feasibility Of A Perspective-Taking Peer Role-Play Intervention, Barbie Ann Seton Stephen

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Empathy has been identified as a crucial skill for all healthcare providers who treat patients with chronic pain. It has been directly linked to higher patient satisfaction and improved health outcomes. It has also been linked to reduced burnout, fewer medical errors, and improved job satisfaction among healthcare providers. Despite the many interventions that have been developed to promote empathy, the decline of empathy in healthcare providers and trainees continues to be of great concern, especially in pain management and opioid prescribing, thus affecting the quality of care given to these patients. In physician assistant students, this decline has …

Public Housing Professionals Perspectives On Mobile Food Unit Location And Accessibility For Children, Antoinette Lashurn Simpson Nov 2025

Public Housing Professionals Perspectives On Mobile Food Unit Location And Accessibility For Children, Antoinette Lashurn Simpson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Poor nutrition is a major contributor to death in the United States, and residents of public housing face disproportionate challenges in maintaining adequate nutrition. Public housing is the nation’s oldest housing subsidy program, providing more than one million units for millions of residents, many of whom are women, minorities, and unmarried individuals with incomes below the poverty line. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore public housing professionals’ perspectives on using a mobile food unit located within housing communities to help reduce food insecurity. Feminist intersectionality theory provided the framework for this study, emphasizing how overlapping systems …

Examining Emergent Patterns Of Behavior In White Female Sexual Homicide Offenders, Kristin Bemis Nov 2025

Examining Emergent Patterns Of Behavior In White Female Sexual Homicide Offenders, Kristin Bemis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The majority of studies on sexual homicide offenders (SHOs) have been conducted on male sexual homicide offenders (MSHOs). In many aspects, this is due to society’s reluctance to view women as capable of sexual murder. There have only been a handful of studies conducted on female sexual homicide offenders (FSHOs). However, these studies found substantial differences between MSHOs and FSHOs, as well as between White FSHOs and Black FSHOs. Since prior studies on FSHOs have all been quantitative, this study employed a qualitative case study approach to analyze FSHOs. Using rational choice theory, 12 White FSHO cases were examined, using …

Dialysis Social Workers' Perceptions Of Strategies To Address Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Barriers To End-Of-Life Planning With Black Dialysis Patients, Annette Carol Kestner Nov 2025

Dialysis Social Workers' Perceptions Of Strategies To Address Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Barriers To End-Of-Life Planning With Black Dialysis Patients, Annette Carol Kestner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have an excessive risk of mortality and experience ongoing inequities in end-of-life (EOL) planning. This basic qualitative study, informed by Sulmasy's biopsychosocial-spiritual model, explored social workers' perspectives about approaches that consider the interplay of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects for mitigating barriers to EOL planning among Black dialysis patients. Data were obtained from semi structured interviews with 10 licensed dialysis social workers in Virginia and Maryland. Thematic analysis with descriptive coding, reflexive journaling, and peer debriefing was employed to analyze qualitative data to ensure trustworthiness. Six themes were identified: (a) building trust …

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

This paper presents Connect with Kindness, a holistic, trauma-informed, and child-centered curriculum designed to foster emotional literacy, empathy, and moral imagination through lived experiences of kindness. Grounded in the pedagogical legacies of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Janusz Korczak, and Vasyl Sukhomlinsky—and enriched by contemporary insights from neuroscience and psychology—the curriculum reflects a contemplative and relational approach to education. Drawing on over 1,800 multimedia submissions from children in 45 countries, Connect with Kindness elevates children’s voices as co-creators of learning and encourages deep reflection through nature-based experiences, art, peer dialogue, and community engagement. By integrating Dr. Bruce Perry’s neurodevelopmental model and …

The Role Of A Luxury Brand For The Professional Competitiveness Of Brazilian Business Women, Irene Raguenet Troccoli, Patricia Da Silva Leite, Joyce Gonçalves Altaf

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

This qualitative article explores the significance of a luxury women’s shirt brand in fostering the professional competitiveness of Brazilian Generation Y women. It does this by identifying the personal values that motivate women to wear these shirts, based on the Means-End Theory. This theory was operationalized using the Soft Laddering technique and complemented by non-participant observation. The result is that these shirts play a role in securing respect – primarily professional, but also personal – from third parties for the wearers, helping them to perceive themselves as successful in their careers. This study is the first to examine the ability …

Chinese Women’S Rising Refusal Of The Family : The Problems, The Resistance, The Post-Family And Post-Capitalist Work Imaginaries, Peier Chen Nov 2025

Chinese Women’S Rising Refusal Of The Family : The Problems, The Resistance, The Post-Family And Post-Capitalist Work Imaginaries, Peier Chen

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

A new generation of Chinese women is questioning the family by examining internal contradictions in parent-child relationships, particularly in how intimacy and care are enacted, while also challenging the legitimacy of the family institution that underpins gendered divisions of labor and hierarchies. Some of them are revealing the problems within the family and refusing patriarchal marriage and family as their daily act of resistance. Their resistance extends beyond the family, into their workplaces, where gender division and hierarchies are also at work. This emerging phenomenon presses us to theorize today’s family problems, especially concerning those related to women’s gendered oppression, …

A Glance At Spark: Multiple Perspectives Of An Innovative Mentorship Program, Sungmin Park, Thomas Peterson Nov 2025

A Glance At Spark: Multiple Perspectives Of An Innovative Mentorship Program, Sungmin Park, Thomas Peterson

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Youths from high-risk settings are often labeled based on their behavior, which leads to cycles of negative stigmatization and punitive interventions. Traditional behavioristic approaches used in schools, courts, and therapy have shown limited success in fostering long-term positive change. The SPARK mentoring program offers an innovative approach by following the principles from Martin Buber's “I and Thou” philosophy to view the youths with a humanistic and spiritual model. The SPARK program is a 10-week peer-mentorship program that connects youth on probation with college students who aspire to be educators. The SPARK program aims to ignite the spirit of hope, healing, …

Empowering Voices: Teacher Well-Being In The Face Of Racial Microaggressions, Leila Fitt Nov 2025

Empowering Voices: Teacher Well-Being In The Face Of Racial Microaggressions, Leila Fitt

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis investigates the relationship between racial microaggressions and teacher burnout, with a specific focus on emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Teachers of color in predominantly White or less racially diverse schools may experience unique racial stressors, such as microaggressions, that impact their mental health and teaching efficacy (Hemric et al., 2010; Lambert et al., 2009; Maslach & Jackson, 1986; Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2011; Sue et al., 2007; Zee & Koomen, 2016). The study (a) examined the direct relationship between racial microaggressions and teacher burnout; (b) explored the moderating role of school connectedness in this relationship; and (c) investigated whether teaching …

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Peer influence is central to adolescent smoking initiation, yet its impact varies depending on individual and contextual factors. Understanding which moderators (personality, contextual, cultural, and environmental traits) shape these processes can inform more effective prevention strategies. We investigated hypothesized moderators of peer influence for adolescent smoking/vaping norms and other smoking-related outcomes in high and low-middle-income countries (LMICs): Northern Ireland and Bogotá.

Methods: Across 12 schools (n = 1,344, age 12–13 years), participants completed novel behavioral economics experiments measuring social norms, and self-report surveys, before and after school-based prevention interventions (ASSIST and Dead Cool). We examined how peer influence …

Subverting The System: Reducing Sex Offender Recidivism And Aiding Reentry Through The Use Of Specialty Courts, Jaymes Fairfax-Columbo, Emma Hamilton, Chelsea Jackson, Lia Knox-Hershey, David Dematteo Nov 2025

Subverting The System: Reducing Sex Offender Recidivism And Aiding Reentry Through The Use Of Specialty Courts, Jaymes Fairfax-Columbo, Emma Hamilton, Chelsea Jackson, Lia Knox-Hershey, David Dematteo

Texas A&M Law Review

Sex offender policy in the United States is predicated on accomplishing risk reduction and increasing public safety via punishment and incapacitation. Theoretically, accomplishing these goals should lessen the risk that sex offenders pose to society. However, an accumulated research base suggests that sex offender policies are ineffective in that they do not reduce recidivism rates, do not diminish children’s risk of sexual predation, and produce numerous detrimental collateral consequences. Further, current sex offender policies may actively undermine risk reduction by placing factors known to reduce risk level, such as stable housing, employment, and social support, out of the reach of …

A Reemployment Right For People In Pretrial Detention, Jordan Laris Cohen Nov 2025

A Reemployment Right For People In Pretrial Detention, Jordan Laris Cohen

Texas A&M Law Review

Job loss is a major collateral consequence of pretrial detention. It frequently results from even short periods of detention and can have cascading and long term effects on income, housing security, family stability, and likelihood of incarceration—all despite the fact that people in pretrial detention are entitled to a presumption of innocence and indeed may never be found guilty of an offense. Given existing racial disparities in arrests, bail determinations, and bail amounts, job loss from pretrial detention further drives racial inequalities in employment and income. While job loss from pretrial detention inflicts substantial social harms and undermines due process, …

The Strength Of Weak Ties In Shaping Attitudes Toward Interfaith Marriage: Muslim Migrants In Western Europe, Tolga Tezcan Nov 2025

The Strength Of Weak Ties In Shaping Attitudes Toward Interfaith Marriage: Muslim Migrants In Western Europe, Tolga Tezcan

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examines the “strength of weak ties” argument in the formation of interfaith marriage attitudes. Based on the EURISLAM survey data collected from Muslim migrants residing in six Western European countries, the analyses suggest that both strong and weak ties with natives are positively associated with the likelihood of interfaith marriage approval. However, strong and weak ties are not equally influential when they interact with each other. The results reveal a paradox: the positive effect of strong ties becomes more pronounced only when accompanied by weak ties. In the absence of weak ties, an increase in strong ties is …

#Willsmith: Text Analyses Of X Posts About The Oscar Slap, Merrisa Lin, Nairán Ramírez-Esparza

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Social media users share their thoughts on social events, offering insights into the sociocultural climate. Since language reflects related culture, analyzing social media discussions in different languages provides a window into the sociocultural context. In this exploratory study, we examined English and Spanish posts related to the Oscar Slap, which sparked race and gender discussions. We analyzed X posts with #willsmith hashtag in English (N = 28,717) and in Spanish (N = 4,251). The Meaning Extraction Method automated text analyses revealed three similar themes across language cultures, a theme specific to English posts, and two themes unique to Spanish posts. …

Planning For Solar Equity: Zoning And Land Use Strategies For Community Solar Gardens In Rural Minnesota, Mahmoud Othman Nov 2025

Planning For Solar Equity: Zoning And Land Use Strategies For Community Solar Gardens In Rural Minnesota, Mahmoud Othman

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

This project examines how land use planning and zoning can support equitable deployment of community solar gardens (CSGs) in rural Minnesota counties and townships. Although Minnesota is widely regarded as a policy leader in community solar, most solar arrays are concentrated in metropolitan areas with greater planning capacity and demand. By contrast, rural jurisdictions must navigate dispersed populations, limited staff, and competing agricultural land uses. Focusing on Clay, Stearns, and Chisago Counties, the study analyzes local ordinances and related land use policies to understand how community-scale solar is defined, sited, permitted, and decommissioned.

Solar regulations are systematically coded for key …

From Prestige To Performance: Evaluating Law School Outcomes Using Value-Added Modeling, Jason Scott, Andrea Pals, Dominique Monserrat Nov 2025

From Prestige To Performance: Evaluating Law School Outcomes Using Value-Added Modeling, Jason Scott, Andrea Pals, Dominique Monserrat

AccessLex Institute Research

Bar passage and employment rates are widely used to evaluate law school performance, yet these raw outcomes often reflect student selection rather than institutional performance. This study applies a value-added modeling (VAM) framework to assess the contributions of law schools to student success, controlling for prior achievement and contextual factors. Using a 10-year panel dataset of 189 ABA-accredited law schools, we estimate fixed-effects models to isolate the impact of the law school learning environment on first-time bar passage and law-related employment. Our findings reveal that schools traditionally viewed as underperforming often exceed expectations when student background is accounted for, challenging …
