We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto
We Have Seen It All. At The Mall, Carla Corroto
Sociology Faculty Scholarship
Many of us have conflicted attitudes toward suburban shopping malls in the United States. Malls are environmentally irresponsible, reinforce a dependence on cars, fortify economic and social stratification, generate private-property, emphasize consumption, and are architecturally disappointing. Malls are also the places where we bought school shoes, where we garnered our first jobs, where we may see a diversity of products and people and tastes, and, remarkably, malls can still surprise us. This article is an overview of mall criticism and a narrative from reluctant mall enthusiasts. We sit at an equivocal place—in between the complexity and contradiction of the suburban …

Investigating Multiple Citizenship In International Relations: Rethinking Globalisation, Nation-States And Social Contract, Hyunji Kang
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
Multiple citizenship was once thought to signify disloyalty to the nation-state and threaten the sovereign international system, hence considered an aberration that should be limited. However, International Relations is in the process of reconceptualising its approaches and moving away from state-centrism so that it may better address the challenges of a transnationalising world. Examining the concept of multiple citizenship provides an opportunity to expand IR research agendas and transnationalise IR theory. Employing a multidisciplinary literature review, this article identifies the possible ways through which investigating multiple citizenship can contribute in advancing the discipline’s theorisations. Firstly, it contends that an analytical …

Writing Fiction During Writing Workshop In First Grade, Maureen Kelly Rowan
Writing Fiction During Writing Workshop In First Grade, Maureen Kelly Rowan
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine how first graders respond to and perform within the writing workshop model. The workshop model is used during the writing of fiction pieces. One goal of this study was to determine how the students would respond to choosing their own topics. A second goal of this study was to determine if students would be successful in composing fiction pieces through the use of this model. The third goal of this study was to determine if there would be gender differences within the choice of topic. The findings showed that the students were …
Complexities And Challenges Of Nonduality, Elizabeth Stephens
Complexities And Challenges Of Nonduality, Elizabeth Stephens
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
States of consciousness referred to as nonduality, awakening, enlightenment, moksha, peak experience, unitive states, or void states, among other terms, have garnered increasing secular attention and have become a topic of psychological and neuroscientific research. A review of the literature revealed many challenges to studying this set of states, such as inconsistent conceptualizations, a variety of models and theories, and conflicting descriptions indicating that the actual experience may not live up to the superlative descriptions found in historical texts or the expectations put forth by nondual teachers. A great deal more empirical research on this topic is needed, and researchers …

Institute for Social and Behavioral Science (ISBS)
Between June 2018 and July 2018, 325 Winter Park residents were surveyed about their opinions of the City of Winter Park’s parks, how they used the parks, their specific neighborhood parks, and any changes they would like to see regarding the parks. Surveys were conducted over the telephone by trained ISBS employees. ISBS received a list of Winter Park residents’ phone numbers from the utility company to allow for the survey to be conducted.
Effects Of A Scripted And Intense Reading Intervention Program On The Reading Comprehension Of Fifth Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Tracy Slater
Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on the use of intensive reading intervention programs in a fifth inclusion classroom setting. This has been a topic that is frequently discussed and how support for the special need students with comprehension deficits can be increased. These students deserve a fair, equal, and individualized learning plan in a classroom that accepts all children. Studies show how successful using intensive reading programs close the reading comprehension gaps with our exceptional students.
The purpose of this study is to show how using the intensive reading intervention program is crucial in the classrooms to support the special needs students. …

Koreans, Americans, Or Korean-Americans: Transnational Adoptees As Invisible Asians, A Book Review, Tairan Qiu
The Qualitative Report
The book, Invisible Asians: Korean American Adoptees, Asian American Experiences, and Racial Exceptionalism, explores the personal narratives and histories of adult adoptees who were born between 1949 and 1983 and who were adopted from Korea by White parents. Using oral history ethnography, Nelson (2016) seeks to correct, complicate, and contribute to current discussions about transnational adoptions. In this book review, the author provides an overview, a personal reflection, and recommendations for potential audiences of this book.
Gendered Partner-Ideals, Relationship Satisfaction, And Intimate Partner Violence, Sylvia Marie Ferguson Kidder
Gendered Partner-Ideals, Relationship Satisfaction, And Intimate Partner Violence, Sylvia Marie Ferguson Kidder
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation identified and developed indicators of a new potential predictor of relationship satisfaction and intimate partner violence (IPV): discrepancies between the ideal and perceived gendered characteristics of romantic partners. Past research has overlooked the implicitly gendered nature of these "partner-ideals." Two pilot studies were conducted to develop measures of gendered partner-ideals and -perceptions based on existing measures of gender ideology.
The main study examined survey data collected online from adults (n = 643) living in the U.S. who were in a heterosexual romantic relationship for at least six months. Three main hypotheses were tested regarding the associations among gender …

Neighborhood Parks And Playgrounds: Risky Or Protective Contexts For Youth Substance Use?, Marijana Kotlaja, Emily M. Wright, Abigail A. Fagan
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Neighborhood parks and playgrounds are thought to reduce the stressors of disorganized urban environments by adding greenspace and fostering community cohesion, and, in doing so, may reduce crime and delinquency. Yet, they may also foster criminal behaviors, including substance use, as they can provide areas for would-be offenders to gather without surveillance or fear of being caught. This study provides one of the first examinations of the relationship between the number of parks and playgrounds in a neighborhood and adolescent substance use. To do so, we analyze data from 1,584 youth living in 76 neighborhoods in Chicago. Using multivariate, multilevel …

Supervised Machine Learning Bot Detection Techniques To Identify Social Twitter Bots, Phillip George Efthimion, Scott Payne, Nicholas Proferes
Supervised Machine Learning Bot Detection Techniques To Identify Social Twitter Bots, Phillip George Efthimion, Scott Payne, Nicholas Proferes
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present novel bot detection algorithms to identify Twitter bot accounts and to determine their prevalence in current online discourse. On social media, bots are ubiquitous. Bot accounts are problematic because they can manipulate information, spread misinformation, and promote unverified information, which can adversely affect public opinion on various topics, such as product sales and political campaigns. Detecting bot activity is complex because many bots are actively trying to avoid detection. We present a novel, complex machine learning algorithm utilizing a range of features including: length of user names, reposting rate, temporal patterns, sentiment expression, followers-to-friends ratio, …
Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller
Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller
McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium
People think the election of Obama led to post racial America. Our research seeks to understand how collective memory of generations affects political understandings of the election of President Obama and President Trump. Using Bonilla-Silva’s lens of racism without racist and Berlant’s theory of cruel optimism we argue that post racial ideas are optimistic and hinder how individuals remember Americas racial past. Through interviewing Generation X and Millennials we find personal relationships factor into how individuals recall political events more than candidate stances. Decoupling politics from person creates a phenomenon where individuals assume voting does not have social implications.
The Relationship Between U.S. Prison And Mental Health: A Review Of Literature, Vanessa M. Jordan
The Relationship Between U.S. Prison And Mental Health: A Review Of Literature, Vanessa M. Jordan
McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium
The majority of the population immediately think of “criminal” or “solitary confinement”. However, the prison population is made up of people who were swept up by policy implementation that was used as a form of social control. This systematic literature review explores the relationship between U.S. prisons and mental health using four main themes: the history of US prisons, race in prison, gender in prison, and mental health in prison.
This Is How We Did It: A Grounded Theory Approach Of Black Male Success, Aaron Smith
This Is How We Did It: A Grounded Theory Approach Of Black Male Success, Aaron Smith
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
For decades, literature has described success for Black males as a hard-to-obtain phenomenon due to the nearly insurmountable hardships they face. Although this previous negative narrative has positively shifted within the last 15 years, there are still insignificant amounts of research on how to obtain Black male life success. This study sought to discover how 14 Black males in Central Virginia achieved life success. In this study, life success for Black males was defined and explored utilizing the psychological construct of well-being. This grounded theory study identified a framework for Black male life success which included a definition for life …

Who Wins And Who Loses? How Gentrification Caused By Public Transportation Is Felt Differently Across Race, Rosina Shipman
Who Wins And Who Loses? How Gentrification Caused By Public Transportation Is Felt Differently Across Race, Rosina Shipman
Politics Summer Fellows
When does a public good become harmful? And who does it harm? To tackle these questions I take a detailed look at how public transportation affects housing prices. Public transportation is a common good utilized by people of all different socioeconomic levels, but scholars have found that the presence of a new public transportation stop can be a catalyst for gentrification, raising housing prices and displacing previous residents. While this positive relationship between housing prices and public transportation is well documented, there is a lack of literature on how gentrification, caused by public transportation, affects neighborhood-housing prices across race. In …
A Nation Of Informants: Reining In Post-9/11 Coercion Of Intelligence Informants, Diala Shamas
A Nation Of Informants: Reining In Post-9/11 Coercion Of Intelligence Informants, Diala Shamas
Brooklyn Law Review
This article challenges the adequacy of the existing legal and regulatory framework governing informant recruitment and coercion practices to protect fundamental rights, informed by the Muslim-American experience. It looks at the growing law enforcement practice of recruiting informants among Muslim-American communities for intelligence gathering purposes. Although the coercion of law-abiding individuals to provide information to federal law enforcement agencies for intelligence gathering purposes implicates significant rights, it is left unregulated. Existing, albeit limited, restraints on the government agents’ ability to coerce individuals to provide information either assume a criminal context, or are driven by historical concerns over FBI corruption. As …
Understanding The American Subaltern: An Exploration Of Complex Literary Characters Through Socio-Cultural Lenses, Sophie Gioffre
Understanding The American Subaltern: An Exploration Of Complex Literary Characters Through Socio-Cultural Lenses, Sophie Gioffre
English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows
This project involves the analysis of three novels — Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Ann Petry’s The Street, and Toni Morrison’s Sula — featuring main characters who are forced to navigate realistic socio-economic environments rooted in racist, sexist, and classist systems of oppression in the United States of America. Through the process of completing close-readings of the novels, conducting extensive secondary research on historical contexts, and examining other scholarly criticisms and interpretations of these novels, I develop new insights into the main characters’ plights. To transfer this conceptual understanding into a more personal and empathetic …
A Foucaultian Discourse Analysis Of Person-Centered Practice Using A Genealogical Framework Of Intellectual Disability, Nick Winges-Yanez
A Foucaultian Discourse Analysis Of Person-Centered Practice Using A Genealogical Framework Of Intellectual Disability, Nick Winges-Yanez
Dissertations and Theses
A genealogical framework highlights the important role sexuality has played in constructing the current label of intellectual disability (ID). The genealogical framework is meant to replace the social, medical, and/or rights-based model(s) that have dominated social work and social services working in the disability field. With this framework, or perspective, I use a Foucaultian discourse analysis to read through seminal texts regarding person-centered practice.
Person-centered practice is the foremost intervention used in social work, and other disciplines, to work with people labeled with intellectual disability. My research questions focus on what is revealed about ID in PCP through a genealogical …

Wide Educational Disparities In Young Adult Cardiovascular Health, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Robert A. Hummer, Benjamin W. Domingue, Kathleen Mullan Harris
Sociology Faculty Research
Widening educational differences in overall health and recent stagnation in cardiovascular disease mortality rates highlight the critical need to describe and understand educational disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH) among U.S. young adults. We use two data sets representative of the U.S. population to examine educational disparities in CVH among young adults (24–34) coming of age in the 21st century: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2010; N= 689) and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (2007–2008; N=11,200). We employ descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results show that fewer than one in four young adults had …
