Open Access At Mit And Beyond: A White Paper Of The Mit Ad Hoc Task Force On Open Access To Mit’S Research, Katharine Dunn, Hal Abelson, Chris Bourg, Ellen Finnie

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

MIT researchers, students, and staff have long valued and put into action MIT’s mission to generate and disseminate knowledge by openly and freely sharing research and educational materials. Indeed, the Institute has been at the forefront of the sharing culture: MIT launched OpenCourseWare (OCW), a free webbased publication of virtually all MIT course content in 2001; in 2002 released DSpace, an open-source platform for managing research materials and publications co-created by MIT Libraries staff; and adopted the first campus-wide faculty open access (OA) policy in the US in 2009.

Convening an open access task force was one of the 10 …

"Born Out Of Fear": A Grounded Theory Study Of The Stigma Of Bipolar Disorder For New Mothers, Walker Ladd Ph.D. Sep 2018

"Born Out Of Fear": A Grounded Theory Study Of The Stigma Of Bipolar Disorder For New Mothers, Walker Ladd Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

Childbirth is an established trigger for the onset of bipolar disorders (BD) in the postpartum period, causing significant pathology and disability. Research has shown that the stigma of mental illness for new mothers is a powerful obstacle to care, preventing women from accessing critical treatment and social support. However, the majority of research has examined the relationship between the stigma and postpartum depression, leaving a gap in knowledge regarding stigma and postpartum bipolar disorder. The problem addressed in this grounded theory study was the lack of knowledge regarding the stigma of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD) in the first …

Sadomasochism According To Freud's Psychosexual Stages Of Development Theory, Elizabeth Ehrmann Sep 2018

Sadomasochism According To Freud's Psychosexual Stages Of Development Theory, Elizabeth Ehrmann

Culture, Society, and Praxis

According to Freud, the combination of children being sexual, and perhaps the repeated act of spanking, whipping, or beating, is believed to lead to a life of sadomasochism. If Freud’s theory is correct, children who have experienced spankings or whippings will tend to be, or would tend to want to be a sadomasochist. Through Freud’s psychosexual stages of development theory, a better understanding of the sexual deviation, “sadomasochism” will ideally be reached. The six psychosexual stages of development are oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital. Through each of these different stages, Freud believed that sexual outcomes originate. Perhaps Freud’s conclusions …

Socio-Economic Status And Perceived Social Responsibility, Jamila Natascha Jones

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This paper examines the concept of social responsibility, and how social economic status effects how different groups both perceive social responsibility and act on social responsibility. There are many ways in which groups and group identity develop and many interacting levels of systems and social conventions; however for the purpose of this paper the groups focus will be based on socio-economic status as an indicator of social responsibility and social action. A brief overview of group dynamics and altruism will be discussed because these concepts are embedded in the idea of social responsibility and social action. Garfinkel's theory of Social …

Scientific, Paranormal, And Spiritual Frames In Alternative Medicine, Charles F. Emmons

Friday Forum

Although the term “integrative medicine” is being used to refer to the merging of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with standard biomedicine, there are some spiritual and paranormal frames for alternative medicine that are only partially integrated into standard medicine if at all. This study examines the orientations of some alternative practitioners and clients/users in the U.S. and the UK in terms of their views of science, spirituality and the paranormal.

Influencing Gender Specific Perceptions Of The Factors Affecting Women’S Career Advancement Opportunities In The United States, Kevin C. Taliaferro Sep 2018

Influencing Gender Specific Perceptions Of The Factors Affecting Women’S Career Advancement Opportunities In The United States, Kevin C. Taliaferro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the sociological, psychological, and physiological factors known to affect women’s career advancement opportunities. It examines how awareness and knowledge shared through the #MeToo (hashtag Me Too) movement influenced gender specific perceptions about the factors affecting women’s workplace opportunities. Finally, it recommends measures to alter the divergent gender perceptions that remain an obstacle to gender equality in the workplace.

This study was conducted because gender inequalities continue in the U.S. workplace in 2018. Currently women fail to advance in careers at the same rate as men, and they are paid 21% less for similar work with equal skills …

Ageing, Health And Health-Seeking Behaviour In Ghana, Razak Mohammed Gyasi Sep 2018

Ageing, Health And Health-Seeking Behaviour In Ghana, Razak Mohammed Gyasi

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Rapid ageing of populations globally following reductions in fertility and mortality rates has become one of the most significant demographic features in recent decades. As a low- and middle-income country, Ghana has one of the largest and fastest growing older populations in sub-Saharan Africa, where ageing often occurs ahead of socioeconomic development and provision of health and social care services. Older persons in these contexts often face greater health challenges and various life circumstances including role loss, retirement, irregular incomes and widowhood, which can increase their demand for both formal and informal support. This thesis addresses the effects of the …

The Provision Of Urban Ecosystem Services Throughout The Private-Social-Public Domain: A Conceptual Framework, Alessandro Ossola, Laura Schifman, Dustin L. Herrmann, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Kirsten Schwarz, Matthew E. Hopton Sep 2018

The Provision Of Urban Ecosystem Services Throughout The Private-Social-Public Domain: A Conceptual Framework, Alessandro Ossola, Laura Schifman, Dustin L. Herrmann, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Kirsten Schwarz, Matthew E. Hopton

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

As cities are largely private systems, recent investigations have assessed the provision of ecosystem services from the private realm. However, these assessments are largely based on the concept of ownership and fail to capture the complexity of service provision mediated by interactions between people and ecological structures. In fact, people interact with ecological structures in their role of land tenants and stewards, further modulating the provision of ecosystem services. We devise a theoretical framework based on the concepts of ownership, tenancy, and stewardship, in which people, as mediators of ecosystem services, regulate the provision of services throughout the private-social-public domain. …

Pentecostalism And Charismatic Movements In Nigeria: Factors Of Growth And Inherent Challenges, Matthews A. Ojo Sep 2018

Pentecostalism And Charismatic Movements In Nigeria: Factors Of Growth And Inherent Challenges, Matthews A. Ojo

The WATS Journal: An Online Journal from West Africa Theological Seminary

Since about 1986, i.e. in the past 46 years and within our own generation, we have witnessed certain fundamental changes in the way Christianity is perceived and practiced in Nigeria, and in other parts ofWest Africa. The most substantial change is associated with a kind of spirituality brought into existence by the rise of Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. This new religious effervescence is part of what is generally referred to as the Charismatic Renewal, a revivalist movement within the Christian church with global dimension. From its old form as a sectarian religion in Africa in the early twentieth century, by …

The Pre-History Of Subsidiarity In Leo Xiii, Michael P. Moreland Sep 2018

The Pre-History Of Subsidiarity In Leo Xiii, Michael P. Moreland

Journal of Catholic Legal Studies

(Excerpt)

Part of the confusion over subsidiarity—but also, perhaps, an aspect of the principle’s richness—is its combination, then, of both “libertarian” and “communitarian” elements. Progress in our understanding and application of subsidiarity will require a careful assessment of these considerations and determining when intervention or assistance [subsidium] from a higher authority is needed and when devolution of responsibility is warranted. More precisely, we will need to determine when authority is properly located at a higher level and when authority is properly recognized in the smaller community. This conclusion, in turn, will require a discussion of subsidiarity’s political theoretical …

Christian Legal Thought Comes Of Age, David A. Skeel, Jr. Sep 2018

Christian Legal Thought Comes Of Age, David A. Skeel, Jr.

Journal of Catholic Legal Studies

(Excerpt)

CLT is a deeply satisfying book. It raises more questions than it answers, just as a casebook should. Perhaps most surprising, CLT looks and feels like a true casebook, a book one could actually use for a class that students might wish to take. As I worked my way through its pages, three features stuck out. I will briefly consider each, then conclude by putting the casebook in larger perspective.

The Forest And The Trees: What Educational Purposes Can A Course On Christian Legal Thought Serve?, Randy Beck Sep 2018

The Forest And The Trees: What Educational Purposes Can A Course On Christian Legal Thought Serve?, Randy Beck

Journal of Catholic Legal Studies

(Excerpt)

In this short essay, I want to consider the educational purposes a course in Christian legal thought might serve. How could having such a course in the curriculum help accomplish the goals of legal education? One can understand why a law school with a Christian identity would want to offer this sort of course. Such law schools embrace a theology that helps adherents make sense of the world, including the world of human law. The less obvious question I want to consider is why a law school that does not subscribe to a particular theological understanding of the world …

Covetousness In Book 5 Of Confessio Amantis: A Medieval Precursor To Neoliberalism, Jeffery G. Stoyanoff Sep 2018

Covetousness In Book 5 Of Confessio Amantis: A Medieval Precursor To Neoliberalism, Jeffery G. Stoyanoff

Accessus

In Book 5 of John Gower’s Confessio Amantis, Genius’s extended discussion of Covetousness demonstrates how this subtype of Avarice leads to the ruin of the networks of collectives that make up society. Interestingly, the process by which Covetousness damages the collectives that make up these networks looks a lot like the neoliberalism that has come to dominate a number of governments in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Gower’s tales trace the spread of this sin from the top of society to the bottom; from the highly public to the intimately personal. In all scenarios, Covetousness is a force of …

Late-Career Unemployment Has Mixed Effects In Retirement, Maren Wright Voss, M. Beth Merryman, Lisa Crabtree, Kathy Subasic, Wendy Birmingham, Lori Wadsworth, Man Hung Sep 2018

Late-Career Unemployment Has Mixed Effects In Retirement, Maren Wright Voss, M. Beth Merryman, Lisa Crabtree, Kathy Subasic, Wendy Birmingham, Lori Wadsworth, Man Hung

Extension Research

Paid work forms a pattern of occupational engagement that shifts during both unemployment and retirement. Similar to unemployment, the occupational disruption associated with involuntary retirement has been linked to poorer physical and mental health outcomes. To better understand the health impact of work transitions during the pre- and post-retirement years, 24 retired individuals with late-career unemployment were interviewed at the Huntsman World Senior Games in October 2016. Demographic data were collected. Braun and Clarke’s (2006) approach was utilized to thematically analyse the interview data and interpretations were evaluated against existing theory. Themes identified included struggle, freedom, and transition, followed by …

Implications Of Globalization On Education, Anthropology And Praxis Collaborative Sep 2018

Implications Of Globalization On Education, Anthropology And Praxis Collaborative

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This piece actually began as an assignment in which each of us were to write a paragraph on "education." As I remember it, this led to the idea that we collect them together in a kind of anthology. This was followed by the chain-letter method of sending on paragraph around to each person for comment. The result of that is what you see here.
