Subprime Mortgage Loans And Today's American Economy, Samantha Kay Nelums
Subprime Mortgage Loans And Today's American Economy, Samantha Kay Nelums
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This paper analyzes a recent economical phenomena that is occurring to minorities and low-income Americans. Subprime mortgage loans have caused many eager homeowners to borrow money from risky lenders. Little do these borrowers know, the lenders have manipulated their lending deals to cause borrowers to pay high interest rates. Certain groups have been targeted by subprime mortgage loan practices, I expand on these practices as well. I also tie in the global economy and how global investors are investing in subprime mortgage loans. Global investors are also being effected by borrowers not having the funds to pay their mortgage loans. …
Cultures Of Class Stratification, Shenoa Lawrence
Cultures Of Class Stratification, Shenoa Lawrence
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This essay was written to explore cultural similarities and differences in my life to that of a Cambodian girl during the reign of the Khmer Rouge. Superficially, no similarities are evident. However, every culture has some element of class stratification, and delving deeper into my life and her life provided enlightenment into some similarities.
Why Professors Hate Their Jobs: A Critique Of The Pedagogy Of Academic Disengagement, Jim Parsons, William Frick
Why Professors Hate Their Jobs: A Critique Of The Pedagogy Of Academic Disengagement, Jim Parsons, William Frick
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This article explores reasons why many academics “hate” their jobs. The authors explore the current state of the academy and focus upon its values, culture, and possibilities. They contend that the academy fosters a pedagogy (defined broadly) of disengagement, and ask: Why might these feelings exist? What possibilities for edification exist? How might we move towards these possibilities? Both pragmatic and philosophical are explored and the authors make seven suggestions that might help more fruitfully engage academics in their work. These suggestions include changes to our language, values and worldviews, norms, and the way we create and use artifacts.
Grandes Retos De La Antropología En El Siglo Xxi, Juan José Gutiérrez
Grandes Retos De La Antropología En El Siglo Xxi, Juan José Gutiérrez
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Anthropology has become one of the most fascinating and engaging disciplines in the vast field of scientific knowledge. Moving beyond the periods of contact and domination of the 15th through 20th Centuries, the world observed by anthropologists has moved into a new phase of interdependency and communications that must be addressed as a theme of central interest to the discipline. It is in this context that migration is, without a doubt, the central most important issue of our days, particularly as it unfolds in the context of all other remarkable events and concerns of our times (economic development, the environment, …

Culture, Society, and Praxis
In this issue of Culture Society and Praxis, we return to our reflections on War, Culture, and the Future. Jeff Kasik entertains a very difficult question for people in the US today. It is the question of the ethical dimension of the use of military force around the world, and also of the use of professional, disciplinary based knowledge in practices of war that allow combatant forces to engage effectively in killing the enemy. Easier said than done; Kasik faces the difficult task of putting into words what it is often impossible to articulate, particularly for those that have faced …

Bible As Notepad. Tracing Annotations And Annotation Practices In Late Antique And Medieval Biblical Manuscripts, Liv Ingeborg Lied, Marilena Maniaci, Jeff Childers
Graduate School of Theology
The present volume provides a comparative look at the contents and layout features of secondary annotations in biblical manuscripts across linguistic traditions. Due to the privileged focus on the text in the columns, these annotations and the practices that produced them have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. The vast richness of extant verbal and figurative notes accompanying the biblical texts in the intercolumns and margins of the manuscript pages have thus been largely overlooked. The case studies gathered in this volume explore Jewish and Christian biblical manuscripts through the lens of their annotations, addressing the various relationships between …

Design Nested case–control study.
Setting Southern Community Cohort Study of persons residing in 12 states in the southeastern USA.
Participants 1334 cases of lung cancer and 5315 controls.
Primary outcome measure Risk of lung cancer.
Results After adjustment for smoking status and other confounders, and additional adjustment for individual-level measures of socioeconomic status (SES), there was no monotonic increase in risk with worsening deprivation score overall or within sex and race groups. There was an increase among current and shorter term former smokers (p=0.04) but not among never …
How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
How To Begin, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin”—either a new encounter or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally occurring, video-recorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our social …
Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Arriving: Expanding The Personal State Sequence, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore
Communication
When arriving to a social encounter, how and when can a person show how s/he is doing/feeling? This article answers this question, examining personal state sequences in copresent openings of casual (residential) and institutional (parent-teacher) encounters. Describing a regular way participants constitute—and move to expand—these sequences, this research shows how arrivers display a nonneutral (e.g., negative, humorous, positive) personal state by both (1) deploying interactionally timed stance-marking embodiments that enact a nonneutral state, and (2) invoking a selected previous activity/experience positioned as precipitating that nonneutral state. Data demonstrate that arrivers time their nonneutral personal state displays calibrated to their understanding …
Intercultural Coworker Relationships (Icors) In The Global Workplace: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer L. Morton
Intercultural Coworker Relationships (Icors) In The Global Workplace: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer L. Morton
Dissertations
Previous research supports what employees intuitively sense: peers make the place (Chiaburu & Harrison, 2008; Schneider, 1987). Extant research suggests coworker relationships have critical influence on outcomes ranging from turnover (Felps, Mitchell, Hekman, Lee, Holtom, & Harman, 2009) to creativity (Homan, Buengeler, Eckhoff, van Ginkel, & Voelpel, 2015) to organizational commitment (Viswesvaran & Ones, 2002) to employee health and well-being (Heaphy & Dutton, 2008). Despite the increase of Intercultural COworker Relationships (ICORs), particularly in multinational firms in the technology industry, research has yet to examine what defines coworker relationship quality in the presence of national cultural differences. In other words, …

Immigration And Environment In The U.S.: A Spatial Study Of Air Quality, Guizhen Ma, Erin Trouth Hofmann
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Environmental consequences are frequently cited as a justification for restricting immigration to the United States, but there is little empirical research on the environmental consequences of immigration to support such arguments. The research that does exist shows immigration to be less environmentally harmful than native population growth, but is hampered by small samples and fails to account for spatial autocorrelation of air quality. We use the air quality domain of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Quality Index (EQI) to examine the association between immigrant and native populations and local air quality across all counties in the continental U.S. We employ …

Exploring Consumer Collecting Behavior: A Conceptual Model And Research Agenda, Brian I. Spaid
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the behaviors that revolve around collecting, the motivations behind these behaviors and the psychological benefits collectors receive from engaging in these collecting behaviors.
Design/methodology/approach
A thorough literature review and integration of prominent psychological and social psychology theories are used to propose a conceptual model, several research propositions and potential research questions for future scholarship.
Findings
This paper proposes that a collector salient identity and collecting motives drive tension-inducing social and solitary collecting behaviors and that these behaviors in turn reinforce the collector salient identity. Relevant aspects of the collecting phenomenon are …
Understanding Spatiotemporal Growth Of Ride Source Services In New York City, Lorenzo Roland Varone
Understanding Spatiotemporal Growth Of Ride Source Services In New York City, Lorenzo Roland Varone
Master's Theses
Ride source is among the fastest growing services in the transportation sector. While the service initially served a niche market, ridership has boomed in recent years. Daily ride source pickups in New York City have increased from about 60,400 pickups in January 2015 to about 550,000 pickups in December 2017, an 810% increase. Even though ride source broke into the transportation landscape almost seven years ago, research studying its effects has been stunted by the limited open source data made available by TNCs. In order to help city officials make smart policy decisions regarding ride source, transportation experts must continue …

There is increasing evidence to suggest that arctic cultures and ecosystems have followed non-linear responses to climate change. Norse Scandinavian farmers introduced agriculture to sub-arctic Greenland in the late tenth century, creating synanthropic landscapes and utilising seasonally abundant marine and terrestrial resources. Using a niche-construction framework and data from recent survey work, studies of diet, and regional-scale climate proxies we examine the potential mismatch between this imported agricultural niche and the constraints of the environment from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. We argue that landscape modification conformed the Norse to a Scandinavian style of agriculture throughout settlement, structuring and …

Conceptualizations And Impacts Of Achievement: A Case Study Analysis Of An Urban Northeastern School, Michael D. Corral
Conceptualizations And Impacts Of Achievement: A Case Study Analysis Of An Urban Northeastern School, Michael D. Corral
Doctoral Dissertations
Combining Anti-Deficit Achievement (Harper, 2010) and Critical Race Theory (Sólorzano & Yosso, 2001, 2002) frameworks, this research draws upon case study methodologies (Creswell, 2007; Merriam, 1998; Miles, Huberman & Saldana, 2013; Yin, 2008) to examine how youth conceptualize ideas of “achievement.” To do this, I engaged youth and school-based adults (e.g., teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, etc.) from an urban northeastern public school. The school is categorized as underperforming and resides in a historically underperforming district. Data for this study was gathered through semi-structured interviews, school-based observations, and document analysis. All analyses in this study were anchored in the youths’ perspectives and …

The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) infects humans resulting in acute toxoplasmosis, an infection that in immunocompetent people is typically mild but results in persistent latent toxoplasmosis. In that T. gondii appears to affect dopamine synthesis and because addicting drugs affect midbrain dopamine transmission, latent toxoplasmosis could influence substance use. Using both the third and continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we used logistic regression to test for associations between T. gondii seropositivity and subject self-report of having ever used tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine. …

The Politics Of Race And The Florida Gubernatorial Election Of November 2018, Laird W. Bergad
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
Introduction: This report studies the voter registration rates in face of the new Florida Gubernatorial elections in November 2018.
Methods:Using the latest voter registration data by race and party in Florida of July 30, 2018, this report provides an accurate statistical profile of the actual registered electorate. It also utilizes the U.S. Census Bureau’s data on the presidential election of 2016 and the November 2014 mid-term election, to indicate voter participation and voting rates by race and age.
Results: While nearly 64% of eligible non-Hispanic white voters went to the polls and supported the Republican candidate for president in 2016 …
Using Appreciative Inquiry As A Tool For Congregational Change, Jason W. Locke
Using Appreciative Inquiry As A Tool For Congregational Change, Jason W. Locke
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
Successful navigation of congregational change is difficult. Churches face numerous technical and adaptive challenges. While leaders can often guide their churches through technical change with logic, negotiation and even force, adaptive change requires a deeper form of reprogramming and congregational discernment. The College Church of Christ, having been in decline for nearly two decades, went through an intensive process of appreciative inquiry to elicit data that might fund a new, life-giving narrative. This article discusses that process and challenges that arose in moving on to next steps.

Exploration Of Social Studies Teachers’ Experiences Of Reading Practices: A Phenomenological Study, İlhan İlter
The Qualitative Report
In this phenomenological study, I aimed to describe the perceptions of social studies teachers’ lived experiences about their reading practices that may have influence on the development of students’ reading comprehension. Data were collected from interviews and handwritten interview notes were analyzed by using qualitative data analysis. Sixteen middle school social studies teachers were recruited in different schools in a city in Turkey for this study. Three themes emerged from the data analysis in the study: reading comprehension skills and strategies, teaching practices and instructional practices. The results of this study yielded two findings: first, the majority of the teachers …
