Federal Literatures: Toward A Theory Of Literary Intranationality, Braz Albert
Federal Literatures: Toward A Theory Of Literary Intranationality, Braz Albert
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
There is a general tendency to associate a national literature with a nation-state, a link that at times verges on the mystical. Yet it is common knowledge that there are considerably more sociological nations than nation-states, suggesting that often there is more than one nation in a given country and likely more than one national literature. This essay scrutinizes the real contours of the national bodies of writing produced in multination states in an attempt to develop a method for examining literary production other than the “national literature” paradigm—more specifically, federal literatures.
Retrospect And Re-Exploration Of Structuralism, Qichao Zhou
Retrospect And Re-Exploration Of Structuralism, Qichao Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The cross-disciplinary and multi-lingual theoretical journey of "structuralism" is one of the essential topic in contemporary international literary criticism and comparative poetics. Is "structuralism" a school or ideological trend? Roland Barthes argues that structuralism is neither a school nor a movement but an activity. Is "structuralism" a theory or a methodology? Structuralist Jan Mykarovsky believes that structuralism is neither a theory nor a methodology but a cognitive position independent from both. Structuralism de facto is not only a construction activity but a cognitive position and even an ideological paradigm. It is the structuralist criticism belonging to dialogue and interactivity, contrast …
Examining The School-To-Prison Pipeline: Sending Students To Prison Instead Of School, Fatema Ghasletwala
Examining The School-To-Prison Pipeline: Sending Students To Prison Instead Of School, Fatema Ghasletwala
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
Juvenile delinquents are often thought of as intrinsically evil. These youths are blamed for their own plight, believed to be a result of innate character flaws. However, such an obtuse perception is problematic. In many cases, these juvenile delinquents were made delinquents by a faulty system, namely, the School-to-Prison Pipeline. The School-to-Prison Pipeline is a troubling phenomenon in which students are suspended, expelled or even arrested for minor offenses instead of being sent simply to an administrator’s office. Often, these students have backgrounds of poverty, abuse, neglect, and may even have learning disabilities. Instead of being offered counseling, “unruly” …

Complexity In The Determination Of Child Abuse: A Statistical And Rights Based Approach, Yvonne M. Vissing, Phd, Quixada Moore-Vissing, Phd, Leah Salloway, Abd
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies, which involve more than 6.6 million children. A determination of child abuse is a complex process for both courts and child protective service workers. When an allegation of suspected child abuse is made findings may, or may not, lead to court action. Courts rely upon accurate determinations of abuse. While some cases are clear-cut, many are not. The lack of clear-cut data and legal findings, however, does not dissuade the press and public from making determinations of whether children are being adequately protected, and whether parents …
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Weather Variability On A Net Zero Energy Building: Advantage Of Sensitivity Analysis For Performance Guarantee, Jeanne Goffart, Monika Woloszyn
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Weather Variability On A Net Zero Energy Building: Advantage Of Sensitivity Analysis For Performance Guarantee, Jeanne Goffart, Monika Woloszyn
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Global sensitivity analysis associated with uncertainty analysis evaluates the robustness of a physical system and prioritises measurement and/or modelling efforts. The uncertainty analysis evaluates a confidence interval, whereas the sensitivity analysis quantifies the accountability of each uncertain input on the dispersion of the output. These statistical methods are usually used to account for the variability of the static inputs, which are constant regarding the evolution of the system, for example the physical properties of the materials modelled. Dynamic inputs however, i.e. parameters that are variable over time, are rarely taken into account in the statistical analyses because of the difficulty …

To combat educational and health disparities, out-of-school-time (OST) STEM enrichment programs provide services to underserved youth to encourage them to pursue college and health careers. This article describes a study conducted to determine if the Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) program participants who receive year-round educational interventions to prepare them for STEM and health sciences majors performed better on the West Virginia Educational Standards Test (WESTEST2) than non-participants. This study provides descriptive and inferential statistics, specifically one-way ANOVAs with one-to-one matching based on grade level, gender, race, and GPA at the end of the 8th grade year for 336 …

Honor And Violence: An Account Of Feuds, Duels, And Honor Killings, John Thrasher, Toby Handfield
Honor And Violence: An Account Of Feuds, Duels, And Honor Killings, John Thrasher, Toby Handfield
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
We present a theory of honor violence as a form of costly signaling. Two types of honor violence are identified: revenge and purification. Both types are amenable to a signaling analysis whereby the violent behavior is a signal that can be used by out-groups to draw inferences about the nature of the signaling group, thereby helping to solve perennial problems of social cooperation: deterrence and assurance. The analysis shows that apparently gratuitous acts of violence can be part of a system of norms that are Pareto superior to alternatives without such signals. For societies that lack mechanisms of governance to …

Object Handling With Contemporary Craft Objects: An Observational Study Of An Embodied, Social And Cognitive Process, Bruce Davenport, Neill James Thompson
Object Handling With Contemporary Craft Objects: An Observational Study Of An Embodied, Social And Cognitive Process, Bruce Davenport, Neill James Thompson
The Qualitative Report
This study focuses on the ways that people interact around contemporary craft objects. The ambiguous quality of these objects holds people’s attention and inhibits autobiographical narratives. The study focused on the relationship between the perceptual language used by participants and the ways in which they interacted with the objects. The analytical approach taken here begins with close observation and careful description of single cases and working towards valid generalisations rather than imposing an interpretation from the outset by explicitly positing a hypothesis. Six pairs of women were invited to participate in object handling conversations in an art museum setting. The …
Star Power, Pandemics, And Politics: The Role Of Cultural Elites In Global Health Security, Holly Lynne Swayne
Star Power, Pandemics, And Politics: The Role Of Cultural Elites In Global Health Security, Holly Lynne Swayne
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Celebrities have historically served a variety of roles in society ranging from the inspirational to the cautionary, utilizing their platforms of visibility to promote themselves, their work, as well as their social and political causes. This study focuses on celebrities as activists engaging with global health issues, with particular attention to the form this engagement takes, the publicity it receives in the mass media, and the types of global health issues that receive the most celebrity attention. An interdisciplinary approach drawing from theories of power, social movement theory, agenda-setting, and cultural studies is used to achieve greater understanding of underlying …
Thinking Qualitatively Methods Of Mind: A Review, Mary E. Hancock
Thinking Qualitatively Methods Of Mind: A Review, Mary E. Hancock
The Qualitative Report
The following is a review of the book: Thinking Qualitatively: Methods of Mind written by Johnny Saldaña and published in 2015. The book unfolds from the more traditional qualitative research ways of thinking and moves toward the abstract. Learning objectives begin each chapter and end with a summary of key points and exercises designed to stretch the mind by applying the concepts discussed. Throughout each chapter, reflection exercises titled “For Your Mental Rolodex” provide opportunities for additional concept application. Each chapter builds upon the previous chapter forming a solid foundation for how to think qualitatively. Students, instructors, novice, and seasoned …
Studycircle: Promoting A Restorative Student Community, Anna Bussu, Carmen N. Veloria, Carolyn Boyes-Watson
Studycircle: Promoting A Restorative Student Community, Anna Bussu, Carmen N. Veloria, Carolyn Boyes-Watson
Pedagogy and the Human Sciences
This essay presents a model of teaching and learning conceptualized as the StudyCircle Model of Restorative Communication. It was co-developed among second year communication students at the University of Sassari (Italy) in 2014-2015 with the purpose of facilitating active learning, promoting a culture of peace and well-being/life skills among students and faculty, and creating robust mechanisms for integrating marginalized students to the university community; thus potentially preventing school detachment among vulnerable student populations. Drawing on Peace Circles as a holistic methodology for promoting a restorative student community, this article presents the constructivist theoretical framework underpinning the StudyCircle Model, describes the …
Critical Theoretical Frameworks In Engineering Education: An Anti-Deficit And Liberative Approach, Joel A. Mejia, Renata A. Revelo, Idalis Villanueva, Janice Mejia
Critical Theoretical Frameworks In Engineering Education: An Anti-Deficit And Liberative Approach, Joel A. Mejia, Renata A. Revelo, Idalis Villanueva, Janice Mejia
Engineering Education Faculty Publications
The field of engineering education has adapted different theoretical frameworks from a wide range of disciplines to explore issues of education, diversity, and inclusion among others. The number of theoretical frameworks that explore these issues using a critical perspective has been increasing in the past few years. In this review of the literature, we present an analysis that draws from Freire’s principles of critical andragogy and pedagogy. Using a set of inclusion criteria, we selected 33 research articles that used critical theoretical frameworks as part of our systematic review of the literature. We argue that critical theoretical frameworks are necessary …
Mulberiddlesex, Catriona Sandilands
Mulberiddlesex, Catriona Sandilands
The Goose
Through a careful tracing of the botanical presence of mulberry trees in Middlesex, Sandilands argues for a reading practice that takes plants seriously. Thinking with plants interrupts the tendency to consider literary plants primarily as motifs, metaphors or agents of crude naturalization. Sandilands insists on involving plants in reading Middlesex in order to take the novel in less anthropocentric directions: even as Cal enlists mulberries to signal inevitability, their own stories overflow the novel’s deterministic views of race, species, territory, and gender identity.
Dehumanism And Disposability, Julietta Singh
Dehumanism And Disposability, Julietta Singh
The Goose
Singh draws our attention to the “mute objects” of Middlesex, particularly The Obscure Object’s silent Black maid, Beulah, who quietly supports the unfolding romance between Cal and The Object. Through careful attention to histories of people silenced by slavery, dehumanization, and violence, Singh demands that we consider where and through what means some get to be fully human while others are made and sustained as objects for their comfort and play.
“This Is The Way I Was”: Urban Ethics, Temporal Logics, And The Politics Of Cure, David R. Anderson
“This Is The Way I Was”: Urban Ethics, Temporal Logics, And The Politics Of Cure, David R. Anderson
The Goose
This article employs Eli Clare's concept of the "politics of cure" in order to discuss issues of disability, temporality, and ethical relations to rehabilitation, restoration, and cure in the Sex and the (Motor) City: Ecologies of Middlesex special cluster.
Ecological Crisis, Or “Intersex Panic,” As Answer Of The Real?, Stephanie Hsu
Ecological Crisis, Or “Intersex Panic,” As Answer Of The Real?, Stephanie Hsu
The Goose
Drawing upon Cal’s eventual metamorphosis into “The [white] Man” in Middlesex, and an examination of the Real of ecological crisis, Hsu explores the intersection of environmental racism, climate change denial, and intersex discrimination in order to advocate for a renewed awareness of ecological interdependency and the need for self-determination of people of colour in ecological and environmental justice discourses.
Trans-Pacific Imaginaries And Queer Intimacies In The Ruins Of Middlesex, Dai Kojima
Trans-Pacific Imaginaries And Queer Intimacies In The Ruins Of Middlesex, Dai Kojima
The Goose
Taking up Roland Barthes’s concept of the “third meaning,” Kojima analyzes the character of Julie Kikuchi, the Japanese American love interest of the grown-up Cal. Taking Julie seriously as a character beyond mere plot contrivance and cultural reference, Kojima invites us to consider the intertwined histories of economic rise and fall, trans-Pacific wars, and other intimacies that Middlesex remains entangled in yet fails to fully acknowledge.
Border Crossings, Watery Spaces, And The (Un)Verified Self In Middlesex, Jenny Kerber
Border Crossings, Watery Spaces, And The (Un)Verified Self In Middlesex, Jenny Kerber
The Goose
Kerber traces the ways in which water liberates and transforms various characters in Middlesex in order to critique and complicate water’s taken-for-granted liberatory powers. Kerber invites us to consider the majority of those for whom water is as deadly as it is (possibly) emancipating, especially those most vulnerable to climate change and other ecological and violent upheavals.
Beyond The Biography Of A Gene, Laura J. Collins
Beyond The Biography Of A Gene, Laura J. Collins
The Goose
Collins approaches the ethical nuances of Cal’s intersex narrative in Middlesex, drawing comparisons with current debates in North Carolina concerning gender-normative bathroom use and trans rights, in order to advocate for more ethical practices of relation and responsibility outside of mere knowledge creation and policy.
Middlesex And The Biopolitics Of Modernist Architecture, Nicole Seymour
Middlesex And The Biopolitics Of Modernist Architecture, Nicole Seymour
The Goose
Highlighting the architecture of the Middlesex house of Eugenides’ novel as a major technology of modernity, Seymour argues for the biopolitical understanding of such modernist architecture and for the ways in which it often works against the exploitative effects of automation and sexology, yet constitutes a complex and even contradictory force in processes of modernization, and in the novel itself.
Materialism’S Affective Appeal, Elizabeth Mazzolini
Materialism’S Affective Appeal, Elizabeth Mazzolini
The Goose
Citing the pronounced lack of academic engagement with Middlesex since its publication and riffing on the novel’s recounting of the demise of the auto industry in Detroit, Mazzolini examines how cycles of obsolescence and currency work within academic discourse and ultimately advocates for the novel’s potential for examining the material and affective nature of relevance itself.
From Rusty Genetics To Octopussy’S Garden, Stacy Alaimo
From Rusty Genetics To Octopussy’S Garden, Stacy Alaimo
The Goose
Alaimo critiques the “rusty” understanding of genetics, gender, and sex in Middlesex, advocating instead for queer ecological futurism.
On Being Intimate With Ruin: Reading Decay In Middlesex, Kaitlin Blanchard
On Being Intimate With Ruin: Reading Decay In Middlesex, Kaitlin Blanchard
The Goose
Blanchard argues for an intimate attention to the ruin in Middlesex and Detroit as a means of exploring the geo-bio-politics of decay as a problem of our socio-ecological present.

Introduction: Sex And The (Motor) City: Ecologies Of Middlesex, Kaitlin Blanchard, Catriona Sandilands
The Goose
This special cluster consists of twelve short essays, originally presented in two linked roundtables at the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) conference in Detroit in June 2017, examining Jeffrey Eugenides' 2002 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Middlesex. Through the novel, these papers explore the historical, intersectional, and ecological understandings of Detroit, exposing an exceptional—indeed, epic—range of social ecologies, concerned with everything from intersex and multispecies bio/geopolitics to transnational economies, to the aesthetics of architecture and decay. Focused on a very particular novel, written about a very particular city and experience of it, these papers bring to light and …
