A New Mass Incarceration: Community Corrections, Carceral Geography, And Spatial Power, Iolanthe Brooks Sep 2018

A New Mass Incarceration: Community Corrections, Carceral Geography, And Spatial Power, Iolanthe Brooks

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

In the age of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow (2010), promises to depopulate overcrowded American prisons, and a mainstream acknowledgement of mass incarceration, the American criminal justice system is anything but inert. Instead, modalities of punishment are shifting, particularly towards community-located corrections involving GPS surveillance. This paper seeks to examine this evolution of the carceral state through the marriage of two theoretical lenses: carceral geography and Foucauldian spatial power analysis. Carceral geography offers a theory of the embodied nuance of movement. Its work revolves around the three mobilities of the carceral system: movement to/from, within, and between prisons. This …

Developing And Testing Visual Privacy Metrics, Noor Alkhalili, Ted Kesik, William O'Brien, Terri Peters Sep 2018

Developing And Testing Visual Privacy Metrics, Noor Alkhalili, Ted Kesik, William O'Brien, Terri Peters

International Building Physics Conference 2018

The dense redevelopment of inner cities (intensification) has been accompanied by a dramatic surge in the development of multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) within ever shrinking proximities to one another. Modern multi-unit residential building design often embodies conflicting desires for daylighting and visual privacy, or designers simply do not consider collective occupant discomfort factors. Thus, the focus of this project was to develop and validate conceptual and quantitative variables influencing visual privacy, such that future and existing residential designs can be analyzed from a visual privacy perspective. This paper formulates an approach that combines building physics (visual angles and relative brightness) …

Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews Sep 2018

Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews

Social Work Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study was to explore how adolescent mothers experienced pregnancy and parenthood within the context of residential foster care. Adolescent mothers in foster care are a vulnerable population although little research has explored their experiences, particularly from a resiliency framework. The present study begins to fill this gap by conducting focus group interviews with 39 adolescent mothers living in residential foster care. Using thematic analytic methodology, we uncovered themes that highlighted not only the mothers’ struggles, but also their capacities for resilience. Specifically, the mothers experienced societal stigma, parenting judgment, and challenging relationships with their child(ren)’s …

The Lived Experiences Of Nurses Caring For Pediatric Behavioral Health Patients In The Emergency Department, Jamie Rivera Sep 2018

The Lived Experiences Of Nurses Caring For Pediatric Behavioral Health Patients In The Emergency Department, Jamie Rivera

Doctoral Dissertations

Obtaining behavioral health evaluation and care for the pediatric population is particularly difficult. In recent years, emergency departments (EDs) have become a customary location for patients to seek behavioral health treatment. This spike has created unforeseen problems and caring for this vulnerable population presents ED nurses with many challenges. The purpose of the study was to understand the lived experience of nurses caring for pediatric behavioral health patients in the ED. A qualitative, descriptive phenomenological research design was utilized. Participants (N = 15) engaged in semi-structured interviews and Colaizzi’s (1978) method was used to identify themes. The data analysis …

Mixed News About Youth Violence In Recent Fbi Crime Data, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

FBI crime data displayed a slight increase in violent crime rates between 2016 and 2017. Media reports on this variation did not always mention that violent crime rates are still near a 35-year low. This databit shows the rates of youth arrested for violent crimes between 1982 and 2017.

From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward Sep 2018

From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward

Articles

Upon becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May installed industrial strategy as one of the principal planks of her economic policy. May's embrace of industrial strategy, with its tacit acceptance of a positive role for the state in steering and coordinating economic activity, initially appears to be a decisive break with an era dating back to Margaret Thatcher, in which government intervention was regarded as heresy. Whilst there are doubtless novel features, this article argues that continuity is the overriding theme of May's industrial strategy. First, despite the reluctance to confess it, like every UK government over the past forty years, May …

Implementing A Bottom Of The Pyramid Eye Care Solution, Patrick Long, Eric Martin, Paden Troxell, Charles Kim

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

Eighty-nine percent of the world’s visually impaired live in low-income regions (IAPB/WHO), and uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment. Poor eye care in developing nations hinders development and advancement by creating barriers to education and labor inefficiencies. In some developing countries, few individuals can afford, or even have access to, corrective eye care. We propose the global eye care problem can be addressed using bottom of the pyramid thinking.

Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski Sep 2018

Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski

Charleston Library Conference

University consolidations do more than just affect students and faculty. Changes to the makeup of a campus and the programs available can have a great influence on needed journal and database subscriptions. The electronic resources and serials librarian from Augusta University and the outreach coordinator from JSTOR investigated how the consolidation of two universities with different academic missions changed the usage of their six JSTOR collections. Using data produced by JSTOR in 2012, prior to consolidation, and compiled again for 2016, the authors describe changes in usage, factors that could affect usage, and the implications for future resources.
