Religions In The Global World: Prospects For Sophia Global Studies, Fabio Petito Oct 2018

Religions In The Global World: Prospects For Sophia Global Studies, Fabio Petito

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author offers some reflections on the place of religions in a global world. The first relates to the failure of the so-called secularization thesis, and the re-emergence of religion in the international arena. The second relates to certain imbalances in the ways in which commentators have dealt with this resurgence, especially when they link religions to conflict without recognizing the potentialities that religions offer for conflict resolution. The third point builds on the previous, recognizing the growing recognition that religion can represent a strategic resource for diplomacy, peace-building and development. The author recognizes the potential that the Sophia Global …

Europe: Religious Identity In A Fragmented Age, Olivier Roy

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author offers a reflection on the question of Christian identity in a changing Europe. He points out that it was only as the number of practicing Christians in public life diminished that the question of the Christian identity of the continent arose. He questions the kinds of uncritical identification of European and Christian culture that arises in the fact of increased Islamic immigration. He surveys the principal options facing Christians and Christian culture as Europe faces an uncertain future.

Crumbling The ''Oreo'' Cookie, Lillian Cadet

SURGE

They will treat you as if you have come from an outer space planet. They will be amazed by how much you are different from others. People will make jokes about how much of an “oreo” you are. How your chocolate cookie layers are thinner than your cream filling. [excerpt]

Vasquez V. Foxx: Brief Of Eighteen Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Petitioners, J. J. Prescott Oct 2018

Vasquez V. Foxx: Brief Of Eighteen Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Petitioners, J. J. Prescott

Appellate Briefs

Amici are eighteen scholars across six disciplines whose work includes the leading empirical studies of persons convicted of sexual offenses and the laws applied to them. The Appendix identifies them and describes their work.

Amici believe it critical that judicial decisions affecting constitutional rights be grounded on an accurate understanding of empirical realities. At the very least, they should not propagate misunderstandings. Unfortunately, such misunderstandings are commonplace and often traceable to language in early opinions of this Court. The Seventh Circuit opinion in this case is an example. It relies on mistaken assumptions about both the re-offense risks posed by …

Sustaining Change Through Individualized Coaching, Jody Worth

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

This study reveals educators’ journey through a change process as an innovation was being infused throughout their instructional practices. Traditional professional learning is not fashioned to address the ongoing concerns teachers have and the structure to sustain change. There is evidence to suggest that teachers are resistance to change due to the lack of attention placed on individualized change. This research investigates the topics of organizational change, individual change, evolution of professional development, teacher resistance, and individual coaching to lead to a deep understanding of the structural components of teacher support in order for change to transpire. This research is …

Natural Resources-Based Conflicts In Coastal Louisiana: A Multi-Faceted Social And Ecological Setting, Audrey Grismore Oct 2018

Natural Resources-Based Conflicts In Coastal Louisiana: A Multi-Faceted Social And Ecological Setting, Audrey Grismore

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Louisiana coastal zone supports numerous natural resource-based economies and due to overlapping demands on the same territory, conflicts among users and resource managers have emerged. When the state recognized serious depletion of oysters in the late nineteenth century, it intervened with a set of conservation polices to try to establish sustained yields that produced one set of conflicts. When the oil industry began operating in the coastal estuaries and wetlands in the 1930s, it produced additional conflicts with fishing folk. The zone of conflict gave rise to cyclic adaptations as each group struggled to sustain its environmentally based economic …

Unpacking The Double Bind: Exploring How The Intersection Of Race And Gender Shape The Undergraduate Experiences Of African American Women In Engineering, Anissa Guerin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This three-part qualitative study explored the factors that contribute to the success of African American female students’ persistence in engineering majors. This study also addressed obstacles African American female students face and overcome to persist in engineering majors. Examining African American women in engineering who persist would be an effective method to provide academic support and increase participation amongst this underrepresented group. In addition to exploring the challenges and barriers faced by African American women, this study also acknowledged the skills, perspectives and resources African American women bring to engineering and engineering education. Highlighting their distinctive contributions and attributes would …

Debunking The Myth Of The Efficacy Of “Push-Down Academics”: How Rigid, Teacher-Centered, Academic Early Learning Environments Dis-Empower Young Children, Flora Harmon, Radhika Viruru Oct 2018

Debunking The Myth Of The Efficacy Of “Push-Down Academics”: How Rigid, Teacher-Centered, Academic Early Learning Environments Dis-Empower Young Children, Flora Harmon, Radhika Viruru

Journal of Family Strengths

The increased emphasis on higher academic standards in Early Childhood Education has changed the instructional landscape and developed myths of quality learning. In recent decades, pre and primary schools have begun to focus more on assessments and testing as a determinant of quality learning; this emphasis has led to a shift to “push down academics”, which refers to an increase of academic standards at a younger age (Bassok, Latham, and Rorem, 2016). The concept of “push-down academics” is contrast to the foundational components of early childhood education, which equally values socio-emotional development, academic core concepts, and natural growth (Burman, 2016; …
