“We Talked About Straight People Sex”: The Health Education Experiences Of Queer And Trans Youth In Utah, Sonny Partola Dec 2025

“We Talked About Straight People Sex”: The Health Education Experiences Of Queer And Trans Youth In Utah, Sonny Partola

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

This article explores how Utah’s health education curriculum shapes the experiences of queer and trans youth. Drawing on critical ethnography conducted at an urban public high school, the study foregrounds the voices of six queer and trans students. Findings reveal that abstinence-focused and heteronormative curricula render these youth invisible, exclude critical information on queer, trans, and intersex health, and compromise students’ well-being. Participants described feelings of discomfort, irrelevance, and pressure to act as informal educators for peers. Their accounts highlight the urgent need for queerly responsive health education that affirms diverse identities, normalizes inclusion, and provides accurate, relevant information. Such …

An Accountability Myth: A Critical Analysis On High-Stakes Testing In U.S. Schools, Noelle E. Haskell Dec 2025

An Accountability Myth: A Critical Analysis On High-Stakes Testing In U.S. Schools, Noelle E. Haskell

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

High-stakes testing has become synonymous with the United States (U.S.) education system. This began in the early 1900’s through the form of intelligence testing which was developed by several U.S. psychologists. Since then, high-stakes testing has taken on many forms. Popular policies such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Race to the Top, and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) have all taken aim at increasing academic achievement and holding schools accountable through high-stakes, standardized tests. Even through its varying forms, high-stakes tests have continued to perpetuate inequalities. Considering this, the current study examines how the rhetoric used in describing …

Exploring The Experiences Of Higher Education Students With Invisible Disabilities, Haley Malinverno Dec 2025

Exploring The Experiences Of Higher Education Students With Invisible Disabilities, Haley Malinverno

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This research analyzes textual data derived from Reddit communities to examine the lived experiences of higher education students and alumni with invisible disabilities (swID). The application of concepts and models of critical disability theory (CDT) are adopted to contextualize student experiences. This study answers two research questions, the first being: R1 - How do reported barriers impact swID in higher education? I find that barriers faced by swID relate to inequities of systemic ableism, with difficulties being a direct side-effect of the inflexible nature of academia. These barriers impact swID in the following ways: The demands of higher education causes …

Beyond The Episode: A Case For Serial Literacy In Efl Education Classrooms, Julie Intveen, Tim Illigens Dec 2025

Beyond The Episode: A Case For Serial Literacy In Efl Education Classrooms, Julie Intveen, Tim Illigens

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Serial storytelling, characterized by its interplay of vertical (episodic) and horizontal (long-form) narrative structures, offers a unique opportunity for media literacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. This paper argues for the development of a serial literacy framework, a concept that expands traditional film literacy models to accommodate the distinct demands of serialized narratives. By using Inventing Anna (Rhimes, 2022) as a case study, the study explores how serial storytelling fosters engagement with themes of identity construction, ethical ambiguity, and transmedial storytelling. This paper elaborates on serial literacy, considering its implications within foreign language learning contexts. The study …

A Children’S Rights Approach To Critical Media Literacy In Language Education: Developing Children’S Agency In A Digital Networked World, Frauke Matz, Jeff Share Dec 2025

A Children’S Rights Approach To Critical Media Literacy In Language Education: Developing Children’S Agency In A Digital Networked World, Frauke Matz, Jeff Share

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Children are growing up in a culture of digitality, one infused in digital communication in and out of school (Faverio & Sidotti, 2024; Stalder, 2018). They are immersed in a digital networked world, which plays a significant role in how they develop their literacies and identities (Cannon et al., 2022) across languages. To help them participate as “active thinkers and citizens in their own right” (Wall, 2016, p. 86), educators could consider the potential of critical media literacy in language education as a pedagogical response to the commercial exploitation of information, and the liberatory potential of critical thinking and creative …

Effective Leadership Strategies For Aligning Vision And Mission To Drive Sustainability, Nyree Price Dec 2025

Effective Leadership Strategies For Aligning Vision And Mission To Drive Sustainability, Nyree Price

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Organizational leaders often struggle when ambitious innovation outpaces the systems, structures, and leadership practices needed to support consistent operational performance. When leaders fail to implement effective resolution strategies to align the organizational vision and mission with operational effectiveness, it impacts long-term operational effectiveness, productivity, and long-term sustainability. This qualitative single case study was an exploration of the strategies used by some business leaders in a mid-sized, for-profit telecommunications firm in the Midwest United States. The study applied the Baldrige Excellence Framework as the conceptual lens. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with executive leaders and through an analysis of internal …

Evolutions In European Family Law: Towards A Common Core?, Frédérique Ferrand Dec 2025

Evolutions In European Family Law: Towards A Common Core?, Frédérique Ferrand

Journal of Civil Law Studies

This paper examines developments in European family law and considers whether a common core is gradually emerging. The first part is devoted to the European Union. Under the Treaties, substantive law on family matters, including the legal status of persons, falls within the competence of Member States. However, EU regulations govern jurisdiction and the recognition of court decisions and authentic instruments in several areas directly relevant for families and children in cross-border situations. Although these regulations do not directly deal with substantive family law, they can provide indirectly for a certain harmonization via uniform jurisdiction and recognition rules as well …

What Is The Most Important Issue In Indonesia’S Political Belief System? Network Analysis Of Attitude And Voting Behavior In 2014 And 2019, Khaerullah Fadhli Arasy Hasan, Whinda Yustisia, Mirra Noor Milla, Mark Brandt Dec 2025

What Is The Most Important Issue In Indonesia’S Political Belief System? Network Analysis Of Attitude And Voting Behavior In 2014 And 2019, Khaerullah Fadhli Arasy Hasan, Whinda Yustisia, Mirra Noor Milla, Mark Brandt

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Previous research has shown that attitudes toward political issues have a significant influence on voting behavior (Bukari et al., 2022). However, not all issues exert equal influence, and some may have a more direct impact on voting behavior than others. This study applies network analysis within the framework of the PBS model (Brandt & Sleegers, 2021) to explore the issues that most strongly shaped voters’ choices in Indonesia’s 2014 and 2019 elections. To answer the research question, we used data from a national survey (n = 962) conducted in 2018. The analysis was conducted by evaluating the shortest path values …

Exploring K-Pop Fandom As A Space Of Support: The Case Of Lgbtq+ Fans From Australia And The Philippines During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Thomas Baudinette, Kelsey Scholes

Kritika Kultura

This article draws upon qualitative interviews with seventeen LGBTQ+ individuals to explore the role of K-pop fandom in providing support to queer communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The article adds a new critical perspective into academic and journalistic accounts of K-pop fandom to insist on K-pop consumption as a practice that fundamentally improves fans’ mental health. Beginning by establishing how K-pop fandom spaces, particularly on social media, were considered to already support LGBTQ+ fans’ attempts to make sense of their gendered and sexual identities under societal heteronormativity, the article details specific benefits that LGBTQ+ fans experienced with regard to their …

Whose Story Is It? Postcolonial Racialization, Social (Im)Mobility, And Crony Capitalism In Tash Aw’S Five Star Billionaire, Chi Miao

Kritika Kultura

Malaysian Chinese author Tash Aw’s novel Five Star Billionaire narrates the stories of five Malaysian Chinese individuals striving to establish themselves in Shanghai by seeking opportunities for advancement, economic prosperity, and personal transformation. Drawing from Dan Shen’s narratological theory of dual narrative dynamics, which states how texts can have overt and covert narrative progressions, this article elucidates the novel’s hidden agenda by exploring how the characters’ experiences in contemporary China are intricately connected to their past in Malaysia. If interpreted according to the narrative’s overt progression, Five Star Billionaire depicts individuals who are enticed and ensnared by the forces of …

Korean Division Trauma And Mourning Communities, Kim Seok, Kim Jong Gon Dec 2025

Korean Division Trauma And Mourning Communities, Kim Seok, Kim Jong Gon

Kritika Kultura

Division trauma is marked by traits specific to the Korean context, including extreme ideological polarization and a complex mix of superiority and inferiority. Our research introduces the concept of “mourning communities” as a framework for collective healing. It synthesizes the psychoanalytic theory of mourning with Turner’s notion of Communitas, understood here as an evolving mode of social engagement. While previous studies have attributed division trauma to the collapse of the “Nation≠State” caused by colonial rule and the Korean War, they have not fully accounted for its enduring impact on Korean society. We argue that division trauma was internalized within the …

Reimagining Legal Approaches To Technology-Facilitated Violence Against Women In India, Samina Khan, Rohaida Nordin, Muhamad Sayuti Hassan Dec 2025

Reimagining Legal Approaches To Technology-Facilitated Violence Against Women In India, Samina Khan, Rohaida Nordin, Muhamad Sayuti Hassan

Hasanuddin Law Review

Digital technology has expanded women’s opportunities for expression and participation, while simultaneously enabling new and intensified forms of gender-based violence. In India, technology-facilitated violence against women (TFVW) has increased in scale and complexity, yet existing legal frameworks remain inadequately equipped to address its multidimensional harms. This article identifies a significant gap in Indian law, arguing that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act (IT Act) insufficiently recognise psychological harm, informational privacy violations, and non-sexual online abuse, while continuing to rely on patriarchal notions of consent, modesty, and public morality. Adopting a doctrinal legal research methodology informed by …

A Failure To Converge? The Use Of Convergent Designs In Mixed Methods Research, David L. Morgan Dec 2025

A Failure To Converge? The Use Of Convergent Designs In Mixed Methods Research, David L. Morgan

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prior studies show that what are known as “convergent” designs are the most common form of mixed methods research, yet there has been too little investigation into what researchers actually do when they use convergent designs. This study addresses that gap in the literature by investi-gating not only the prevalence of convergent designs but also the types of convergent designs used and the degree of integration in studies that used this design. I used content analysis to ex-amine a random sample of 500 articles from the Web of Science that mentioned mixed methods and were published in 2023. The results …

We Built This: Redesigning Higher Education From The Ground Up While They Try To Burn It Down, Shawntay King, Juanita E. Marquez, Keisha Rembert, Jolene Taylor, Thera Tilmon

SPACE: Student Perspectives About Civic Engagement

Our text, We Built This: Redesigning Higher Education from the Ground Up While They Try to Burn It Down, examines how recent federal policy shifts, particularly the 2025 Dear Colleague letter and the Project 2025 educational platform, function as deliberate acts of deconstruction. These measures threaten to dismantle equity infrastructures in higher education while intensifying the erasure of Black women’s labor, leadership and legacy in the academy. Through Critical Policy Analysis and Black feminist thought, we argue that these policies operate simultaneously as blueprint and wrecking ball, systematically unraveling decades of progress and constraining the very communities that have sustained …

How Does The Crel Framework Facilitate Effective Interdisciplinary Collaboration And Experiential Learning Through Role-Playing?, James Lipuma, Cristo Leon

STEM for Success Resources

Traditional models of interdisciplinary collaboration in higher education often struggled to transcend disciplinary silos, resulting in fragmented Communication and superficial integration. The Components of Role-playing in Experiential Learning (CREL) Framework offered a transformative alternative by embedding role-playing mechanics into structured learning environments, enabling participants to embody perspectives beyond their disciplinary boundaries. First, this paper introduced the five core components of the CREL Framework—Scenario, Social Contract, Collaboration, Choice, and Experience—and explained how they function as an integrated system for designing and assessing collaborative learning environments. Then, it argued that the framework catalyzed effective interdisciplinary collaboration and authentic experiential learning by simulating …

The Relationship Between Organizational Climate And Job Satisfaction In Higher Education: The Mediating Role Of Social Capital, Mohammed Saud Al-Zahrani Dec 2025

The Relationship Between Organizational Climate And Job Satisfaction In Higher Education: The Mediating Role Of Social Capital, Mohammed Saud Al-Zahrani

UB Journal for Humanities

This study aims to examine the relationship between organizational climate and job satisfaction through the mediating role of social capital. This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study that examined three variables using a sample of 353 faculty members from a Saudi public university. Correlation coefficients were obtained to test the hypotheses and the significance of the relationships. The findings reveal that Organizational climate is positively related to job satisfaction. As for the intervening role of social capital, this study found that social capital did not mediate the relationship between organizational climate and job satisfaction. There are some limitations that should …

Counselor Education And Inclusive Postsecondary Education: A Partnership Model, Rebecca B. Smith Hill, Alexander M. Fields, Olivia J. Lewis, Madeline Saunders, Chelsea Stinnett, Anthony Plotner, Rachel Gilreath

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Researchers in the counseling field have alerted practitioners and counselor education professionals to the need for enhanced training related to supporting individuals with disabilities, namely intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD; Feather & Carlson, 2019). As more individuals with IDD attend college, these emerging adults are specifically in need of counselors with skills and competencies to support their mental health. This paper describes a collaborative, mutually beneficial initiative between a counselor education program and an inclusive postsecondary education program to address the scarcity of personnel prepared to work with individuals with IDD.

Mental Health Professionals’ Non-Clinical Roles As Informed By Attachment: A Systematic Review Of Research, Jennifer L. Tipton, Casey A. Barrio Minton, Brittney N. R. Irion

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

While attachment informs the quality of the therapeutic relationship, which is the basis of all therapeutic work for professional counselors and related mental health professionals (MHPs), less attention has been given to the role of attachment in MHPs’ non-therapeutic roles such as engagement in professional development, teaching, and supervision. This systematic review analyzed 33 research studies that investigated MHPs’ attachment in the context of non-therapeutic roles, including professional development, supervision, and teaching. Findings are discussed in the context of four emergent themes: Professional Functioning and Well-being, Supervisory Relationships, Self-awareness, and Empathy. There is considerable evidence that MHP attachment style is …
