"Upskirting,” Homosociality, And Craftmanship: A Thematic Analysis Of Perpetrator And Viewer Interactions, Matthew Hall, Jeff Hearn, Ruth Lewis
psychology
“Upskirting” is the action or practice of surreptitiously taking photographs or videos up a female’s skirt or dress. In the United Kingdom, it is an offense. However, internationally, laws are uneven. Understanding how perpetrators account for their actions becomes an important question. Here, we present the findings of our thematic analysis of posts on the “upskirting” website, The Candid Zone. Our analysis shows that posters and respondents frame this activity as artistic and technical, providing each other with advice and guidance on where and how to get the “best” shots. We conceptualize this form of abuse as homosociality and crafts …

History In Crisis: Museum Programming During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Lindsay Mcconnell
Honors Thesis
The subject of my research is how museums adapted their public programming in response to COVID-19. The goal of my research is to analyze how successfully museums shifted their community engagement programming to online platforms. Since I hope to work in the museum field of programming, I was motivated to conduct this research. Not much research can be found on this topic because COVID-19’s effects on museums are still unfolding. My research could provide a foundation of ideas to build on. To begin, I read articles about the relationship between museums and technology. I applied this knowledge to analyze how …

Deaths Exceeded Births In A Record Number Of States In 2020, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this data snapshot, author Kenneth Johnson reports that in 2020, the impact of COVID-19 contributed to a record 3,376,000 deaths in the United States: 18 percent more than in 2019. In addition, births diminished by 4 percent to 3,605,000 in 2020. The surplus of births over deaths added just 229,000 to the population in 2020 compared to 892,000 in 2019: a decline of 74 percent.
This decline coupled with diminished immigration produced the United States’ smallest annual population gain in at least 100 years. Deaths exceeded births in 25 states in 2020, far more than in any previous year.

White Racial Identity And Its Impact On Punitive Attitudes Towards Juvenile Offenders, Rossol Gharib
Student Theses
White Racial Identity is a relatively new concept with little to no consensus as to the operationalization of such identity. The first ever White Racial Identity model was developed by Janet E. Helms in 1990. The role of White racial identity has been studied in the context of the racial gap in employment and its influence on racial attitudes, but it has yet to be studied in the context of the juvenile justice system. The criminal justice system is racially imbalanced, with Black males imprisoned 5.5 times more than White males. One of the factors contributing to this imbalance is …

County-Level Factors That Influenced The Trajectory Of Covid-19 Incidence In The New York City Area, Ashley Wendell Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
More than a century of research has shown that sociodemographic conditions affect infectious disease transmission. In the late spring and early summer of 2020, reports of the effects of sociodemographic variables on the spread of COVID- 19 were used in the media with minimal scientific proof attached. With new cases of COVID-19 surging in the United States at that time, it became essential to better understand how the spread of COVID-19 was varying across all segments of the population. We used hierarchical exponential growth curve modeling techniques to examine whether community socioeconomic characteristics uniquely influence the incidence of reported COVID-19 …

The Science Of Memory, Lies, And Fiction: How Stories Shape Humanity's Past, Present, And Future, Jerard Ancel D. Eusebio
Journal Article
Why are humans - for all our evolutionary success - so invested in stories? From ancient tales to the latest tabloid fodder, from private diaries to Facebook Stories, we are steeped in stories. I make the case for how everything is stories, and for how stories are everything - from religion to philosophy to science. Using a transdisciplinary, biocultural approach that accounts for evolutionary literary criticism, philosophy, and the sciences - psychology, sociology, anthropology, neuroscience - I outline our engagement with stories and its impact on our identities, behavior and decisions, social norms and structures, and ultimately, our very survival …

Physical Therapy Education Revisions According to Appalachian Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants
Paige Freeman
Dr. Michael Lane PhD, Department of Exercise Science
According to the American Physical Therapy Association and associated literature, the Physical Therapy profession has not changed significantly since its modern beginnings despite the obvious changes in technology and research. The lack of these changes can leave graduates underprepared for the challenges of the workplace and have an increased variability in practice, yet students continue to pay more for the same inadequate education. These issues exist overall within the Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant professions …

The ‘She-Cession’: A Look At Women’S Labor During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Aspen Aston
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The pandemic in 2019-2021, induced by the spread of Covid-19 influenced global economic downturns and had significant effects on the United States labor force. The recession and pandemic disproportionately affected women’s labor causing higher unemployment and lower labor force participation for women relative to men in the U.S. throughout 2020. These effects were influenced by occupational choices, income decisions, parental status and social norms. This paper will show that women’s tendency to work in service-related occupations prompted massive losses in employment when social distancing recommendation and mandates were enforced by state and local governments. Furthermore, social distancing caused the closure …

Motorcycle Fatality Rates Due To Head Injuries Are Lower In States With Helmet Laws, Mary E. Helander
Population Health Research Brief Series
There are over 4,500 motorcycle crash fatalities per year in the U.S., on average. Roughly 37% of those deaths involve head injuries. Motorcycle helmet laws reduce fatalities, serious cognitive disabilities, and social costs. Yet many states have no helmet laws. This data slice shows that from 1999 to 2019, states with helmet laws had a 33% lower head-related fatality rate compared to states without helmet laws. Motorcycle helmet laws clearly save lives.

Research experience provides critical training for new biomedical research scientists. Students from underrepresented populations studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are increasingly recruited into research pathways to diversify STEM fields. However, support structures outside of research settings designed to help these students navigate biomedical research pathways are not always available; nor are program support components outside the context of laboratory technical skills training and formal mentorship well understood. This study leveraged a multi-institutional research training program, Enhancing Cross-Disciplinary Infrastructure and Training at Oregon (EXITO), to explore how nine institutions designed a new curricular structure (Enrichment) to meet a common …

In the United States, over 60 percent of all four-year postsecondary institutions enrolling 2,500 or more students have their own police departments.Yet, the phenomenon of colleges employing private police forces began relatively recently: about 50 years ago. Why? An emerging culture of protest on college campuses. This climate of activism, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, traces back to the civil rights movement, specifically its triggering of an increase in Black student enrollment at primarily white institutions. Accepted into colleges they had historically been excluded from, these students presented a threat to colleges' existing social order and forced them to …

Being-With Smartphones, Tiger C. Roholt
Being-With Smartphones, Tiger C. Roholt
Department of Philosophy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In a social situation, why is it sometimes off-putting when a person reaches for his smartphone? In small-group contexts such as a college seminar, a business meeting, a family meal, or a small musical performance, when a person begins texting or interacting with social media on a smartphone he may disengage from the group. When we do find this off-putting, we typically consider it to be just impolite or inappropriate. In this essay, I argue that something more profound is at stake. One significant way in which individuals shape their self-identities is through interactions with others in small groups. Much …
