Ecofascist “Snakeoil” And The Imperative Of Racializing Environmental Justice For The 21st Century: A Burkean Rhetorical Criticism Of Contemporary Ecofascist Manifestos, Lantz Shifflett May 2021

Ecofascist “Snakeoil” And The Imperative Of Racializing Environmental Justice For The 21st Century: A Burkean Rhetorical Criticism Of Contemporary Ecofascist Manifestos, Lantz Shifflett

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Ecofascism of the 21st century is a revival of centuries-old white nationalist fascism integrated with a concern for environmental issues from the last few decades. Designated by their writers as “manifestos,” three ecofascists have widely disseminated their documents online just before committing acts of racially motivated terrorism in three different countries. Furthermore, these manifestos provide a lens into contemporary ecofascist conspiracies as well as their own concocted “snakeoils” that present their ecofascist agendas in the form of rhetorical “curatives” to environmental issues of pollution. These “cures” are grounded in a new “green nationalism” that attempts to disguise the white …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A growing body of literature provides important insights into the meaning and impact of the right to marry a same-sex partner among sexual minority people. We conducted a scoping review to 1) identify and describe the psychosocial impacts of equal marriage rights among sexual minority adults, and 2) explore sexual minority women (SMW) perceptions of equal marriage rights and whether psychosocial impacts differ by sex. Using Arksey and O’Malley’s framework we reviewed peer-reviewed English-language publications from 2000 through 2019. We searched six databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, JSTOR, and Sociological Abstracts) to identify English language, peer-reviewed journal articles …

A Closer Look At Relationship Structures: Relationship Satisfaction And Attachment Among People Who Practice Hierarchical And Non-Hierarchical Polyamory, Sharon M. Flicker, Flavia Sancier-Barbosa, Amy C. Moors, Lindsay Browne

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Although polyamorous relationships have received increasing attention from researchers over the past decade, little attention has been paid to differences in relationship configurations: some individuals arrange their relationships hierarchically, prioritizing a primary partner; other relationship structures are non-hierarchical with no relationships prioritized over others. Across two samples (NStudy1= 225; NStudy2= 360), we compared relationship satisfaction and attachment security between individuals in hierarchical and non-hierarchical configurations. Greater variability in attachment security was found between partners in hierarchical relationships than those in non-hierarchical relationships; no significant differences were found in variability in relationships satisfaction across these groups. …

This paper will discuss the different pressures and stereotypes that female athletes face and the psychological effects that result from these stereotypes. These stereotypes cause issues in athletes’ lives such as low self-esteem which can cause more serious psychological impacts on one’s life.

Female athletes have already overcome so many adversaries. They have gone from not being able to compete competitively because of biological beliefs to having the same opportunities as male athletes because of Title IX. There is more room for female athletes to become accepted in society today. Society creates pressure on everyone but throw in being a …

Sexism In The Sports World, Daniela Miceli

Academic Festival

Sports have been a male dominated field years, and women have not been acknowledged for their achievements. The differences between men and women stems from their physiology, gender stereotypes and the perception of female athletes in the media. There has been bridges in the gaps of gender inequality after the passing of Title IX, but other stereotypes that have hindered women from furthering their careers in sports, whether it be athletically or socially. Until the socialization of women in the sports changes, there will not be progress made in society.

The Impact Of Race And Socioeconomic Status On Individuals Within The Intensive Care Unit, Kayla Castro

Academic Festival

For my academic festival presentation, I chose for my topic to be concerned with, “The Impact of Race and Socioeconomic Status on Individuals within the Intensive Care Unit”. Race and socioeconomic status play a big role in the life of individuals because of the stress of where one stands in society. This can relate to their income status, education, skin color, occupation, and other crucial factors. When thinking about this social and economic status, along with race, an individual’s corresponding health is typically always associated. Among the populations, the inequality in socioeconomic status and race tends to influence the critically …

Defining The Sociological And Psychological Terms Of Systemic Racism, And Exploring The Neurobiological Root Of Racism, Anh Nguyen May 2021

Defining The Sociological And Psychological Terms Of Systemic Racism, And Exploring The Neurobiological Root Of Racism, Anh Nguyen

Academic Festival

It is crucial to define the terms that pertain to systemic and institutionalized racism to clear any confusion in order to aptly move forward. Defining terms such as racist, antiracism, intersectionality, oppression, assimilation, segregationism, diversity etc., will aid in the coherency and consistency of these terms. Often times the terms listed are vaguely understood, leading to the development of disparities in society overtime and disadvantages to people of Color. Racist practices historically such as slavery, which is segregation of Blacks amongst the Whites, continues today in forms of segregation within the workforce, education, healthcare, and socioeconomic status that are deeply …

Behind The Smoke Screen: A History Of Conspiracy Theories And Why They Are So Pervasive, Mia Coluccio May 2021

Behind The Smoke Screen: A History Of Conspiracy Theories And Why They Are So Pervasive, Mia Coluccio

Academic Festival

Conspiracy theories are commonly defined as attempts to explain notable social and political events as the result of secret plots conducted by high-powered, sinister individuals or groups. They offer simple solutions to the often-complex question of why certain events occur by conferring blame upon hidden evil cabals that place their own malevolent interests above those of the rest of society. Conspiracy theories feature prominently in the current social climate in the United States, yet despite their prevalence, they continue to be shrouded with misconceptions. Many Americans misconstrue the sheer magnitude of conspiracy theories currently in circulation as evidence of a …

The Role Of The Father In The Young Child’S Life And Development: What Do Early Childhood Teachers Need To Know?, Charlotte Silver May 2021

The Role Of The Father In The Young Child’S Life And Development: What Do Early Childhood Teachers Need To Know?, Charlotte Silver

Graduate Student Independent Studies

The contribution of the father to the young child’s life and development has been looked at far less than that of the mother. This paper analyzes how fathers impact the development of growing children and why this issue matters to early childhood educators. By extension, it analyzes the impact of a father’s absence. In today’s society of increasingly diverse parenting structures, many children are growing up in fatherless households. For such children, teachers may prove to be significant figures in the hierarchy of attachment. This paper begins with a brief history of attachment theory. It then provides an overview of …

Reimagining Student Engagement In The Remote Classroom Environment, Christopher B. Denning, Serra Acar, Carol Sharicz, Ellen Foust May 2021

Reimagining Student Engagement In The Remote Classroom Environment, Christopher B. Denning, Serra Acar, Carol Sharicz, Ellen Foust

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

As higher education institutions struggled with switching to remote teaching due to the COVID19 pandemic, perhaps one of the most important lessons learned is that instructors need additional support to successfully engage students in remote classrooms. Moving courses from the classroom to online delivery radically alters all aspects of teaching and learning, making it easy for interactions to be lost in the transition. It is, therefore, imperative that instructors use elements of effective online teaching and synchronous classroom pedagogy to maintain student engagement. This paper uses the constructivist learning theory as a framework, especially as this theory is applied in …

First Amendment Knowledge And Competence In United States Residents, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Kimberly M. Bernstein

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Lacking adequate knowledge about one's rights could inhibit the likelihood of exercising one's rights or lead one to unwittingly violate laws that place legitimate limits on these rights. Thus, the present research examines First Amendment knowledge as well as competence to apply this knowledge in relevant circumstances. Results revealed that one-quarter of participants failed a test of objective knowledge on First Amendment rights. Furthermore, participants' belief in their ability varied depending on their level of knowledge, in line with the Dunning–Kruger effect. Participants also failed to transfer their limited objective knowledge to “real-world” situations, exhibiting impaired First Amendment competence. These …

Community Foundations As Community Leaders, Colton Strawser May 2021

Community Foundations As Community Leaders, Colton Strawser

Dissertations

Community foundations claim to play an integral role in fostering philanthropy at a community level all across the United States. Community foundations have three distinct operational roles, including asset building, grantmaking, and community leadership. While asset building and grantmaking have methods available to quantify and measure their impact, community leadership has remained an elusive concept for community foundations for many years.

This study investigates the idea of community leadership in the context of 81 community foundations based in California. The first part develops a conceptual framework of community leadership based on existing studies and practical guidelines, including the use of …

Transforming A Typical Flea Market Into A More Vital Third Place Through Expressions Of Cultural Diversity, Nusrat Jahan Nipu May 2021

Transforming A Typical Flea Market Into A More Vital Third Place Through Expressions Of Cultural Diversity, Nusrat Jahan Nipu

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

"Flea markets are significant in North America because of their cultural, socio-economic, functional values, and the opportunities they provide for social interaction and public gathering" (Riveira, A.N., 2013). They can be transformed from typical commercial marketplaces into vital third places by expressing various cultural themes through design. In 1989, "third place" was termed by Ray Oldenburg, an urban sociologist who espoused that one’s home is the first place, workspace or office is the second place, and the area where people meet informally to enjoy the company of others is the third place (Oldenburg, R., 2008). The use of cultural themes …

"Upskirting,” Homosociality, And Craftmanship: A Thematic Analysis Of Perpetrator And Viewer Interactions, Matthew Hall, Jeff Hearn, Ruth Lewis

psychology

“Upskirting” is the action or practice of surreptitiously taking photographs or videos up a female’s skirt or dress. In the United Kingdom, it is an offense. However, internationally, laws are uneven. Understanding how perpetrators account for their actions becomes an important question. Here, we present the findings of our thematic analysis of posts on the “upskirting” website, The Candid Zone. Our analysis shows that posters and respondents frame this activity as artistic and technical, providing each other with advice and guidance on where and how to get the “best” shots. We conceptualize this form of abuse as homosociality and crafts …

History In Crisis: Museum Programming During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Lindsay Mcconnell May 2021

History In Crisis: Museum Programming During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Lindsay Mcconnell

Honors Thesis

The subject of my research is how museums adapted their public programming in response to COVID-19. The goal of my research is to analyze how successfully museums shifted their community engagement programming to online platforms. Since I hope to work in the museum field of programming, I was motivated to conduct this research. Not much research can be found on this topic because COVID-19’s effects on museums are still unfolding. My research could provide a foundation of ideas to build on. To begin, I read articles about the relationship between museums and technology. I applied this knowledge to analyze how …
