Accommodating Hrm In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes): A Critical Review, Brian Harney Aug 2021

Accommodating Hrm In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes): A Critical Review, Brian Harney

Economic and Business Review

The significance and imprint of SMEs as dominant employers is not proportionally reflected in people management scholarship. In an effort to map out the prospects for greater understanding, this paper critically evaluates the prevailing understanding in HRM. First, a case is made for definitional clarity to avoid aggregate interpretations of SMEs and ill-defined applications of HRM. The paper then explores four key theoretical frames of reference, namely universalism, best fit, cultural and ecological theories, highlighting their merits and limitations as applied in the SME context. This assessment results in a call for more holistic, integrative and context sensitive theory and …

Grassland Production And Management – Trends And Perspectives For The 21St Century, John Hodgson Aug 2021

Grassland Production And Management – Trends And Perspectives For The 21St Century, John Hodgson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The XIX International Congress is set in a time of unprecedented change, with increasing uncertainty about the long-term sustainability of established systems of land use. The major threats are the continuing rapid increase in the human population of the world, the pressure on land resources to meet food requirements, the effects of global warming on climate stability, and the consequence of these factors on land resource stability and food production potential. Overlying these threats is the impact of the global economy on land use policies.

Projections made at the XVIII International Grassland Congress in 1997 suggested that food production could …

Syllabus: Religion, Gender, And Sexuality (Fall 2021), Amy Mcdowell

Course Events, Presentations, and Syllabi

Fall 2021 course syllabus for SOC 619 (Sociology): Religion, Gender, and Sexuality

Course description: Religion looms large in debates over gender and sexuality in U.S. society. It is difficult to discuss LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, feminism, or reproductive rights without also addressing religion. This course takes the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality seriously and asks: How does religion help make gender and sexual norms feel moral and true? Is religion always oppressive to gender and sexual outlaws? How does religion structure LGBTQ+ lives and histories in conservative Christian contexts like Mississippi? This course also gives significant time and attention …

Using Macro Archival Databases To Expand Theory In Micro Research, N. Sharon Hill, Herman Aguinis, Josiah Drewry, Sanjay Patnaik, Jennifer J. Griffin Aug 2021

Using Macro Archival Databases To Expand Theory In Micro Research, N. Sharon Hill, Herman Aguinis, Josiah Drewry, Sanjay Patnaik, Jennifer J. Griffin

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Databases containing macro-level data are an underutilized methodological tool for expanding theory in micro research (i.e., individual and team) to the macro (i.e., organizational and higher) level of analysis. We describe how macro archival databases support different theoretical approaches for upwardly expanding micro research and summarize unanswered research questions across micro domains requiring upward expansion. We describe 31 macro archival databases as a resource for testing research questions that upwardly expand theorizing in micro domains and how databases enable methodological best practices (i.e., data collection over time, multiple measures of a construct, multilevel statistical controls, missing data and outlier management) …

Eighteenth-Century Queer Studies, Revisited, Jeremy Chow Aug 2021

Eighteenth-Century Queer Studies, Revisited, Jeremy Chow

Faculty Journal Articles

This review essays opens with concerns over “crisis” that have spurred widespread panic about the state and future of the humanities. Crisis, I suggest, is the rallying call for new directions in and reinvention of 18th-century queer studies. By advocating for recuperative histories wherein crisis is a motivational force that pushes 18th-century queer studies to be further self-reflexive and intersectional, I examine three potent trends and their portents for 18th-century studies: masculinity studies, the nexus of queer and disability studies, and trans studies. I close with a continued call for examinations of queerness and race as they might enlighten the …

Looking for ways to empower existing and future women leaders lead to an exploration of mindfulness as a practice to improve self-awareness and increase empathy allowing leaders to arrive at each situation with a balanced, present mind. This project proposes a Mindful Leadership Model which begins by looking inward, then shifts outward to the situation with an adapted situational leadership model that helps assess the appropriate response for different situations depending on the leaders response and the contributors readiness.

Acehnese Attitudes Towards Their Heritage Language: A Qualitative, Inter-Generational Study, Zulfadli Abdul Aziz, Yunisrina Qismullah Yusuf Dr., Naula Aulia Aug 2021

Acehnese Attitudes Towards Their Heritage Language: A Qualitative, Inter-Generational Study, Zulfadli Abdul Aziz, Yunisrina Qismullah Yusuf Dr., Naula Aulia

The Qualitative Report

Due to the dominant position of Indonesian as the national and official language, local languages have been less favoured amongst their native speakers. Even one of the most widely used languages in Aceh Province, Acehnese seems to be neglected by younger generations, especially in urban areas. This study investigates the practice, attitudes, and maintenance of the Acehnese language. Three generations of Acehnese women were interviewed in-depth on their language use. Most respondents, in this study, still use Acehnese in their daily communication. All respondents in the first generation and most in the second generation obtain a positive attitude towards Acehnese …

Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Harry Korman, Peter De Jong, Sara Smock Jordan Aug 2021

Steve De Shazer’S Theory Development, Harry Korman, Peter De Jong, Sara Smock Jordan

Translated Abstracts

Anticipating Change: Multi-Tier Framework For A Sustainable Energy Transition, Francesca Cresta Aug 2021

Anticipating Change: Multi-Tier Framework For A Sustainable Energy Transition, Francesca Cresta

Capstone Collection

Transitioning the Energy Sector from fossil fuels to renewable energy is perhaps the biggest opportunity to sustainably mitigate climate change. This paper presents a multi-tier holistic framework to score and visually represent the key features of sustainability that could influence the long-term success of the energy transition in different social, ecological, and economic contexts. The framework is applied in detail to Morocco and Italy. The complexity of the concept of sustainability calls for a tool that can help stakeholders locate and address priority areas. Five dimensions of sustainability have been described: institutional, environmental, social, economic, and technical. These are divided …

Lgbt Inclusivity In Transpersonal Psychology: A Case For Incorporating Lgbt Spiritual Experiences In Transpersonal Education, Daniel A. Seda, Phd Aug 2021

Lgbt Inclusivity In Transpersonal Psychology: A Case For Incorporating Lgbt Spiritual Experiences In Transpersonal Education, Daniel A. Seda, Phd

Journal of Conscious Evolution

After conducting three qualitative interviews on the somatic experiences of transgender individuals and finding relatively few resources with which to draw significant conclusions in the field, it is clear that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) scholarship is severely lacking in transpersonal psychology.

Method: This research revealed that an understanding and appreciation for the lived experiences of gay people––specifically that of gay men––are also limited and are not appropriately represented through the use of feminist or queer models. Therefore, an alarming number of issues affecting the transgender and gay male populations are not being adequately addressed within the discipline of …

Book Review: Mythic Imagination Today: The Interpretation Of Mythology And Science By Terry Marks-Tarlow, Ivana Gligoric

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Terry Marks-Tarlow interprets mythology and science as endless curiosity about the workings of the Universe, combing with humans’ creative urges to transform inner and outer worlds. The author perceives mythology as a universal product of the human imagination in interaction with the physical and social world, driven by the urge to communicate with others symbolically and make meaning out of life experiences. Moreover, Marks-Tarlow studied the origins of a human story within the social brain, mythmakers, and myths from multiple cultures. At the same time, she explored how contemporary sciences of chaos, complexity theories, and fractal geometry unite with ancient …

Campus Racial Climate, Boundary Work And The Fear And Sexualization Of Black Masculinities On A Predominantly White University, Quaylan Allen Aug 2021

Campus Racial Climate, Boundary Work And The Fear And Sexualization Of Black Masculinities On A Predominantly White University, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This article presents data from a study of Black men and masculinities at a predominantly White university. I argue that the campus racial climate on predominantly White universities are important sites of boundary work where fear and sexualization of Black masculinities are normalized in ways that shape Black men’s social relations on college campuses. In doing so, I will share narrative data of how Black male college students perceive the campus racial climate, with a focus on how they are feared and sexualized in predominantly White spaces. I also analyze the ways in which they managed race, gender, and sexuality …

Nondual Writing: A Perspective On Who Owns Ideas, And A Way To Write With Greater Ease, Andrew Erdman Aug 2021

Nondual Writing: A Perspective On Who Owns Ideas, And A Way To Write With Greater Ease, Andrew Erdman

Journal of Conscious Evolution

The act of writing can cause great anxiety, stoking flames of perfectionism and fears of criticism, narcissistic injury, or indifference. While Buddhist teachings provide liberation from such egoic loneliness, it is not often recognized that postmodern and post-structural thought may also put the “author” and their “writing” in a less-individualized context—one in which a written work is understood to be in fact an ongoing process taking shape in interactions among writer, reader, critic, fan, and the world of literature at large. Keeping such a model in mind can help return joy to the act of writing as it poses the …

Promoting Awareness Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Claire Meyer

Honors Projects

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 54 children across the United States. Adolescents with ASD are often excluded and have negative experiences interacting with their neurotypical peers. This service learning project attempted to address this issue by educating neurotypical adolescents about ASD. Specifically, a 45-minute presentation was delivered at private and public middle schools and secondary schools that aimed to a) educate and inform neurotypical adolescents about ASD, and b) positively influence acceptance and inclusivity of individuals with ASD.

Gender, Risk-Taking And Organization Form : Evidence From The U.S. Property-Casualty Insurance Industry, Jing Li Aug 2021

Gender, Risk-Taking And Organization Form : Evidence From The U.S. Property-Casualty Insurance Industry, Jing Li

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In this paper, we investigate the impact of female CEOs on firm’s risk-taking for U.S. property-casualty insurance companies with differing organizational forms. We analyse the three principal organizational form types in the industry—publicly traded stocks, closely held stocks, and mutuals. Less is known about the role of female CEOs in firms with organizational forms other than publicly traded stock firms. Various ownership structures are associated with varying agency costs between owners and managers. We posit that varying firm ownership structures affect the impact of female CEOs on firm risk-taking. We do not find direct evidence of female CEOs on firm …
