Exploring Effective Retention Strategies Of Skilled And Productive Personnel In The Healthcare Industry, Joshua Emmanuel Banks Feb 2026

Exploring Effective Retention Strategies Of Skilled And Productive Personnel In The Healthcare Industry, Joshua Emmanuel Banks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Employee retention remains a significant challenge for healthcare organizations. Healthcare human resource (HR) managers are concerned about high turnover because it increases staffing costs, disrupts continuity of care, and threatens patient safety and workforce stability. Grounded in transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry project was to explore strategies that healthcare HR managers use to retain skilled and productive employees to ensure continuity of care, patient safety, and overall organizational success. The participants were seven HR managers from the healthcare industry in Virginia; West Virginia; Washington, DC; and Maryland who retained skilled and productive employees to ensure …

Structural and social determinants of health are environmental conditions that affect individuals' health and functioning across the life course. These determinants are salient factors at the apex of individual psychology, community variables, and larger sociological factors, exerting prominent effects on individuals' wellbeing. The National Institute on Aging seeks to understand their influence on aging and Alzheimer's disease. We propose that the benefits of doing so may reach beyond knowledge of disease mechanisms - it may also improve clinical outcomes. We describe efforts introducing structural and social determinants of health data into the national network of Alzheimer's disease research centers. We …

Unmarried Women In Bugis Culture: A Phenomenological Study Of An Indonesian Ethnic Group, A. Octamaya Tenri Awaru, Syamsu A. Kamaruddin, Agustinus Ufie

Journal of International Women's Studies

The population of single women, though still a minority in Indonesian society, has seen a significant increase in the last decade. This demographic trend is often attributed to shifts in lifestyle and higher levels of women’s education. This study analyzes the perspectives of unmarried women, focusing on the factors contributing to singlehood within the Bugis culture in Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research involved seventeen single women aged thirty-five to fifty, which is beyond the average marriage age in Bugis culture. Informants were selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to explore the narratives and …

Patriarchal Constraints In Everyday Lives: Gender Roles, Matrilineality, And The Status Of Contemporary Khasi Women, Mebarisuk Langstieh, Sudhansubala Sahu

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Khasi tribe from Meghalaya in northeast India practices a matrilineal system, which is believed to be more egalitarian than patrilineal systems. The women of the Khasi tribe are often regarded as having a higher status than other women in India. However, despite belonging to a matrilineal society, Khasi women still face challenges in their social lives stemming from patriarchal constructs. This qualitative study examines the social status and subsequent challenges faced by Khasi women in contemporary India. Using in-depth interviews and observations of thirty urban and rural Khasi women in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, the study …

“I Painted It This Way Because I Belong Nowhere”: Using Body Mapping To Explore Gender, Subjectivity, And Resilience Among Afghan Immigrant Women In Iran, Mina Naji, Ali Mehrabi, Ehsan Aghababaeec, Treena Orchard

Journal of International Women's Studies

This qualitative study explores how second-generation Afghan women born and raised in Iran create belonging and identity despite gender, legal, and cultural barriers. Although they represent a large part of the Afghan community in Iran, their daily embodied experiences are rarely discussed in migration or gender studies. Using body mapping and semi-structured interviews conducted with four women aged 18–40, this study examines how displacement and everyday exclusion shape their feelings, identities, and coping mechanisms. The visual and narrative data show how inequalities in education, family life, and social position are felt and carried within the body. At the same time, …

Feminist Reflexivity In Practice: Addressing Positionality And Building Sisterhood Through Fieldwork With Black Migrant Sex Workers In Istanbul, Yeliz Kendir-Gök Feb 2026

Feminist Reflexivity In Practice: Addressing Positionality And Building Sisterhood Through Fieldwork With Black Migrant Sex Workers In Istanbul, Yeliz Kendir-Gök

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article addresses feminist reflexivity and researcher positionality in ethnographic fieldwork with undocumented Ugandan women sex workers in Istanbul’s Tarlabaşı and Aksaray neighborhoods. Drawing on fourteen months of immersive research, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and reflexive journaling, the study examines how both the researcher and participants engaged in strategic forms of resistance within racialized and gendered urban spaces. The analysis is grounded in a feminist epistemological framework that draws on Kandiyoti’s notion of patriarchal bargaining and Scott’s theory of hidden transcripts. Findings reveal how participants and the researcher used subtle forms of resistance, such as strategic silence or performative …

Rural Banditry In North Central Nigeria: The Experience Of Women In Affected Communities, Joseph Egidi Igbe, Tersoo Asongo, Evaristus Akpanke Ushie, William Okon Williams, Patrick Owan Bisong

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study examined rural banditry in North Central Nigeria, focusing on women’s experiences in affected communities. The study specifically looked at women’s experiences with poor health, sexual violence, and physical harm caused by rural banditry and militancy in the study area. The study employs Kate Millet’s feminist theory of patriarchal power and structure to frame its theoretical standpoint. Four hundred women informants were selected through stratified random and purposive sampling techniques, and data were obtained using a questionnaire and eight in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequency tables, while simple linear regression was used …

Penal Protection For Women In Jordan: How Compatible Are International Agreements And Jordanian Legislation?, Hasan Altarawneh, Hamzeh Abu Issa Feb 2026

Penal Protection For Women In Jordan: How Compatible Are International Agreements And Jordanian Legislation?, Hasan Altarawneh, Hamzeh Abu Issa

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article analyses the degree to which Jordanian penal legislation conforms to international human rights standards regarding the protection of women from violence, specifically the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the United Nations Bangkok Rules. Jordan has implemented legislative reforms targeting gender-based violence; however, these reforms are incomplete, disjointed, and frequently misaligned with international standards. This study employs a doctrinal methodology to analyse Articles 292–311 of the Jordanian Penal Code and associated procedural rules, assessing their substantive and procedural provisions in relation to international legal obligations. This analysis includes rulings from the …

Migration Narratives Of Ukrainian Women In South Tyrol: A Comparison Of Pre- And Post-War Experiences, Giulia Isetti, Irem Güney-Frahm Feb 2026

Migration Narratives Of Ukrainian Women In South Tyrol: A Comparison Of Pre- And Post-War Experiences, Giulia Isetti, Irem Güney-Frahm

Journal of International Women's Studies

Through qualitative interviews with Ukrainian women who migrated to South Tyrol, Italy before and after the 2022 Russian invasion, this paper explores the experiences, motivations, challenges, and integration strategies of these migrants. Findings highlight the gendered nature of migration, as Ukrainian women often face occupational downgrading, in which they are forced to work in low-skilled sectors due to language barriers, bureaucratic hurdles, and labour market discrimination. Social integration remains a challenge particularly among post-war arrivals. Unlike other Orthodox Christian migrant groups, respondents report weak communal solidarity, although individual acts of support from local organizations and colleagues mitigate isolation. Finally, the …

An Archival Responsibility: A Scoping Review Of Literature Regarding The Documentary Burdens Of Refugees, Ana Roeschley, Kinza Alizai, Crystal Tharayil, Amy Lanier, Merrion D. Frederick, Homero R. Cuevas Feb 2026

An Archival Responsibility: A Scoping Review Of Literature Regarding The Documentary Burdens Of Refugees, Ana Roeschley, Kinza Alizai, Crystal Tharayil, Amy Lanier, Merrion D. Frederick, Homero R. Cuevas

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Documented individuals who do not live in conflict zones can usually access and use their records to migrate, begin new careers, enroll their children in educational institutions, and gain access to healthcare through mostly routine record-related procedures. However, these standard processes become impossible obstacles for refugees when they lose access to their personal records as part of their forced displacement. Though ever-present for refugees, these documentary burdens are compounded in times of societal crises and political upheaval—times when documentation is most critical. If archivists and archival scholars are to address these issues, it is important to understand the scope of …

In its sixteen chapters the anthology blends theoretical frameworks with practical case studies to address the social and cultural implications of linked data systems. Divided into three parts, the book explores the theoretical and contextual foundations of ethical considerations, addresses institutional and structural challenges shaped by colonial and hegemonic forces, and focuses on community-centered projects that amplify marginalized voices. By highlighting issues such as sustainability, inclusivity, and privacy, the …

Black Women’S Critical And Racial Literacy Practices In Higher Education, Cherita Harrell Feb 2026

Black Women’S Critical And Racial Literacy Practices In Higher Education, Cherita Harrell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed through this study was the limited understanding of how Black female college students experienced critical and racial literacy practices within college-level reading and writing courses, particularly within dominant literacy frameworks that privileged White, Eurocentric norms of language, knowledge, expression, and representation. Grounded in Luke’s critical literacy and Sealey-Ruiz’s racial literacy frameworks, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how Black female college students described their experiences in reading and writing courses, including how dominant literacy frameworks influenced their engagement in ways that limited expression, created barriers to participation, and shaped their academic experiences and personal …

The Lived Experiences Of Visually Impaired Professionals, Robert Anthony Hoyt Feb 2026

The Lived Experiences Of Visually Impaired Professionals, Robert Anthony Hoyt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of visually impaired professionals (VIPs) as they navigate workplace inclusion, identity, and systemic accessibility. Drawing on Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological psychological method, the study analyzed in-depth interviews with eleven purposefully selected participants across diverse professions. The research aimed to address a gap in disability studies by centering on the psychological meanings embedded in the narratives of VIPs; voices that are often underrepresented in organizational research. Through rigorous thematic analysis, three essential themes emerged: (1) the silent erasure of competence, reflecting the emotional labor required to assert professional legitimacy in ableist environments; (2) resilience …

Women’S Reproductive Health Conditions And Fertility Goals, Karen Benjamin Guzzo, Kathleen Broussard Feb 2026

Women’S Reproductive Health Conditions And Fertility Goals, Karen Benjamin Guzzo, Kathleen Broussard

Faculty Publications

There is a large body of research examining women’s fertility decision-making. Yet this work rarely considers how women’s experiences with reproductive health conditions may be linked to their fertility goals, a problematic oversight given the growing emphases on reproductive careers and childbearing biographies that highlight the need to take a life course approach to fertility. Using the 2015–2019 National Survey of Family Growth (N = 8867), this paper examines how reproductive health conditions are associated with women’s fertility goals among women who are not surgically sterile or meet the medical definition of infertility. Slightly more than one in five …

Moral Boundaries: How Sacred Values And Cultural Tightness Influence Entrepreneurial Action, Paul Sanchez-Ruiz, Ileana Maldonado-Bautista, Peter G. Klein, Joseph Vaughn Feb 2026

Moral Boundaries: How Sacred Values And Cultural Tightness Influence Entrepreneurial Action, Paul Sanchez-Ruiz, Ileana Maldonado-Bautista, Peter G. Klein, Joseph Vaughn

Management Faculty Publications

This study examines how religiously grounded sacred values and cultural tightness shape entrepreneurial action. Scholarship on religious entrepreneurship often emphasizes how practices connected to believed superhuman powers motivate and support entrepreneurial processes and outcomes. We highlight a complementary perspective by theorizing that sacred values work as moral commitments rooted in religious practices that limit the action individuals view as acceptable under uncertainty. We further argue that the influence of sacred values depends on the cultural contexts in which entrepreneurial action is embedded. Using multilevel data from more than 14,000 individuals across 11 countries, we find that sacred values are negatively …

Hatchability And Nestling Viability In An Extremely Short-Beaked Pigeon Breed, Türker Savaş, Hakan Erdem, Cemi̇l Tölü

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The selection of hobby animals for breeding by enthusiasts is often based on aesthetic considerations, which can have a negative impact on the animals’ biology. Furthermore, “extreme traits” that deviate from ancestral norms, such as short beaks in pigeons, can be detrimental to the animal’s welfare. Beaks perform many essential functions, such as facilitating feed intake and eggshell breaking. The present study investigates possible hatching problems and the nestling viability of short-beak pigeons through a study of the breeding records of Mısıri (short beak), Baska (medium beak), and Turkish Dönek (normal beak) pigeons, as well as data from one breeding …

The Role Of Institutional Logic: A New Dynamic Typology For Policy Innovation Labs, Esti Hoss-Golan, Anat Gofen, Adam M. Wellstead

Michigan Tech Publications

Policy innovation labs (PILs) are established globally to address complex public challenges. PILS are distinguished by their focus on fostering innovation, promoting collaborative co-design, and engaging in experimentation. The current literature highlights structural characteristics that define PILs, such as their source of funding, their autonomy from government agencies, and the tools that are utilized. This paper provides a dynamic perspective by focusing on the institutional logics of PILs, which are socially constructed patterns of symbols, practices, values, and beliefs that guide decision-making and shape organizational behavior. Drawing from semi-structured interviews with 31 managers from European PILs, we identify three distinct …

t ’ s I n o w b een more than a year since President Trump’s dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which led to the closure of its Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program. In place for decades, the DHS Program produced and shared, free of charge, some of the highest-quality data on population health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our own analysis found at least 9,000 published studies, reports, and book chapters based on more than 400 DHS surveys in almost 100 countries (Fig. 1).* And the DHS has been instrumental in improving the …

A Longitudinal Study Of Workforce Trends And Challenges In The Construction Industry Of A Rural State: A Case Study Of Wyoming, John Annor, Francois Jacobs

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Wyoming’s construction sector, while often eclipsed by extractive industries, plays a vital role in supporting statewide economic activity and infrastructure development. This study investigates key labor force trends in the sector from 2010 to 2024, focusing on employment patterns, age-based workforce composition, and wage trajectories. Drawing on monthly data from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, the analysis employs descriptive statistics, time series modeling, and cross-variable analysis to explore sectoral vulnerabilities. Findings reveal a cyclical employment structure marked by seasonal peaks and troughs, with a notable disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The workforce is aging rapidly, with workers …
