Perceived Discrimination As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Allostatic Load And Asthma Control, Vera Kern

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

While asthma prevalence in the United States is generally declining, African Americans tend to experience poorer outcomes regarding asthma severity and control. The purpose of the present study was to test whether discrimination (everyday and lifetime) moderated the relationship between allostatic load and asthma severity/asthma control (dyspnea and peak flow). In previous literature, researchers established the relationship between allostatic load and asthma severity/asthma control among African Americans. The biopsychosocial model and allostatic load theory served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. In this cross-sectional, nonexperimental, quantitative design, 201 African Americans between the ages of 34 and 82 years were …

Body-Worn Camera Use And Citizen Behavior During Police–Citizen Encounters, Jennifer Matthews Jan 2022

Body-Worn Camera Use And Citizen Behavior During Police–Citizen Encounters, Jennifer Matthews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officials have been increasingly using body-worn cameras (BWCs). The presence of BWCs and subsequent recordings may have a de-escalation effect on citizens, causing more self-awareness, less combativeness, and more compliance. However, additional knowledge is needed to elucidate how citizens react when they are aware their BWCs are being used. The current study was an examination of citizens’ perceptions regarding compliance during encounters with police officers equipped with BWCs. Deterrence and self-awareness theories were the theoretical framework and procedural justice was the conceptual framework used to understand citizens’ behaviors during police–citizen encounters. Participants were 13 individuals in the state …

This study fills the gap in literature in HIV prevention and testing interventions for WSWM by representing Black young adult WSWM in behavioral research, identifying how their lived experiences in relationships …

This study explored the disparate role of biology and any influences …

Social researchers coined the term parentification to describe parent–child role reversal and inappropriate familial roles such as adult-like tasks children are held accountable to complete. Previous researchers have not addressed two issues: (a) whether human service professionals [HSPs] adopt the destructive/maladaptive viewpoint or adaptive/resilient viewpoint surrounding parentification and (b) whether HSPs’ preconceived views and attitudes impact service delivery to parentified persons. Obtaining the perceptions of HSPs may allow more insight into what interventional methods need exploring when working with those individuals. The purpose of this generic, qualitative inquiry was to explore the perceptions of male HSPs regarding parentification and how …
