Self-Efficacy And Perceived Susceptibility As Predictors Of Condom Use Among African American Males, Karla Nash
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS) is a disease that claims lives on a global scale, and correct condom use reduces the likelihood of infection by 10 to 20 times. African-American males are at increased risk for contracting HIV/AIDS compared to the general population. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the relationship between self-efficacy, susceptibility, and condom use in Californian African-American men using the health belief model as a theoretical guide. One hundred and five African American men between the ages of 18 and 35 years were recruited through local barber shops, sports and recreation centers, churches, and social …

Emotional Intelligence And The Perceived Emotional Effects Of Cyberbullying In The Workplace, Madonna Navarro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cyberbullying is a growing problem that has had a negative impact on the health and well-being of employees, which ultimately affects the success and productivity of organizations. In their four branch model of emotional intelligence, Mayer et al. stated that having the ability to perceive emotions, facilitate thought, understand emotions, and manage emotions was important in being able to regulate oneself and overcome adversities. This was the theoretical framework used for the study. The purpose of the current study was to determine what type of emotional effect priming emotional intelligence would have in the presence of perceived cyberbullying in the …

Disparities In The Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act, Helen Grace Neri
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Culturally and linguistically diverse populations in the developmental disability system suffer from socioeconomic and social services disparities. Efforts to address the disparities issue included enacting Welfare and Institutions Code 4519.5 § (e), (f), (g), and (h), also known as the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act or the disparities law. The law mandated monitoring of developmental disability system expenditures and allocated funding to the regional centers and community-based organizations to assist with implementing activities to address the disparity. Schneider and Ingram’s and Jun’s theories of social construction framed the inquiry as to how the law impacted considerations of the social construction …

Addiction Therapists’ Working Alliances With Battered Women With Substance Use Disorders, Lee O'Hara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn the United States, 1 in 3 people with a substance use disorder is a woman who experienced domestic violence in her lifespan; yet only 1 of 5 people in treatment are women, which implies gender-specific difficulties to therapeutic engagement. There are documented inequalities and unmet needs among battered women with substance use disorders when therapists vary in their ability to form a working alliance with patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of addiction therapists’ working alliances with battered women with substance use disorders. The theoretical framework was based in transcendental phenomenology theory and …

Educating Nurses On Sbar Tool Implementation For End-Of-Shift Reporting, Doreen Rose-Park
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patient information transfer during nursing end-of-shift reporting remains a complicated process that lacks universal standardization. This lack of standardization was illustrated at the project site, a detention center in the northeastern United States. Deficiencies and gaps in the health care information of patients during end-of-shift reporting lacked consistence and congruency. This project was developed and implemented to educate the nursing staff at the project site on using the situation–background–assessment–recommendation (SBAR) tool during patient information transfer at cell-side in the facility infirmary. The practice-focused question that guided this project was whether a staff education on an SBAR communication tool designed to …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Certain factors can influence the capabilities of a robot–human team by affecting their social and behavioral dynamics in a work environment. But these factors were not known due to the progressive nature of human–robot partnerships and a lack of peer-reviewed literature on the topic. This e-Delphi study aimed to identify and understand these unknown influential factors based on the participants’ insights. The overarching research question asked about the need to determine factors that might influence the effectiveness of managing human-robot teams. The basis for the conceptual framework for this study was the theory of communication used in organizational management. Twelve …
Differences On Employee Satisfaction And Intent To Leave Between Older And Younger Federal Leaders, Alex P. Thames
Differences On Employee Satisfaction And Intent To Leave Between Older And Younger Federal Leaders, Alex P. Thames
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The retiring of an aging workforce leaves significant deficits in leadership positions across the federal government. As employee turnover increased, onboarding was not occurring at rates necessary to replace retirees, ultimately contributing to the leader deficit. The evidence was insufficient on how the employee satisfaction of both older and younger leaders affects their intent to leave and ultimately the leader deficit. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the differences in employee satisfaction and the intent to leave between older (i.e., age >= 40) and younger (i.e., age < 40) federal leaders to discern how their age influences their satisfaction and desire to leave federal service. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory and Strauss and Howe’s generation theory, the research questions addressed if the independent variable, categorized age of supervisory employees, had an effect on the dependent variables, employee satisfaction and intent to leave. Archival data from the 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey were analyzed. The results of the Welch t-test and Fisher’s exact test (r x 2) found no significant statistical differences (p > .05) between the categorized age group of supervisory employees and …

The Narratives Of Cross-Cultural Misidentification And Exoneration In Wrongly Convicted Men, Miki L. Ross-Elster
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Wrongful conviction is often due to misidentification, particularly cross-cultural misidentification. DNA errors and other influences (including weapon focus effect, mugshot error, police suggestibility) also increase the risk of wrongful conviction, and the process of exoneration is onerous. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of cross-cultural misidentification, wrongful conviction, exoneration, and the return to society of formerly incarcerated men. Implicit bias theory served as the theoretical framework and refers to both attitudes and stereotypes that people hold without realizing it and which unconsciously affect the way they see a particular person or event. A narrative analysis …

The Lived Experiences And Perceptions Of Young Adults Who Have Transitioned Out Of State Or Other Care, Linda Rose Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver 20,000 young adults are released from state care annually and 100,000 young adults are released from justice centers. Past studies have revealed that young adults 18-24 years of age transitioning out of care are not prepared for independent living and may face many adversities. The problem is that young adults have difficulties finding permanent housing once emancipated from state care, their biological homes, or juvenile justice centers. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of young adults 18-24 years of age and how their experiences and life skills helped on their journey to acquire …

The Role Of Child And Adult Sexual Fantasies And Criminal Paraphilia Involving Serial Sexual Murderers, Heather Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood trauma may be a reason a child develops maladaptive coping mechanisms such as sexual fantasies and paraphilia. These coping mechanisms increase in intensity, leading to sexual violence to gain a sense of power and control. Even though researchers have identified that serial sexual killers suffer from child and adult sexual fantasies and criminal paraphilia, details of the sexual fantasies and paraphilia have not been examined. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore the role of child and adult sexual fantasies and criminal paraphilia involving serial sexual murderers. Hickey’s trauma-control model and relational paraphilic attachment theory …
