Developing A Novel Anti-Bias Curriculum For Medical School, Francis I. Achike, Sonali Batta, Catherine Duncan, Clyde K. Fomunung, Astha Mittal, Alexandra D. Powell Pierce, Sebastian Powell, Maya Ramy, Mikaila Singleton, Patricia K. Watson

Journal of Medical Education

Background: The disproportionate morbidity and mortality from the COVID-19 pandemic in communities of color in the USA, combined with the May 2020 murder of George Floyd triggered a national outcry against systemic racism. US medical education regulatory agencies, and students from around the country joined in the call for diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum reforms. This prompted the formation of a Texas A&M University College of Medicine anti-bias curriculum committee of students, staff, and faculty, charged with a comprehensive review targeted at developing a transformative and organizational level diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum. Methods and Results: A framework for the …

Advertising and marketing managers understand that not all brands need to be on social media, but what is not clearly understood is consumers’ engagement expectations for brands that are on social media. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of brand personality, specifically sophisticated and rugged brands, and gendered communication styles on consumers’ expectations of social media engagement. A scenario-based experiment is performed to test the hypotheses using a mock brand. The main study consisted of a Qualtrics consumer panel, and a MANOVA was utilized to examine three components of social media engagement (consumption, contribution, and creation) on the two brand …

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick Mar 2023

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick

Journal Articles

Not long ago, economists denied the existence of monopsony in labor markets. Today, scholars are talking about using antitrust law to counter employer wage-setting power. While concerns about inequality, stagnant wages, and excessive firm power are certainly to be welcomed, this sudden about-face in theory, evidence, and policy runs the risk of overlooking some important concerns. The purpose of this Essay is to address these concerns and, more critically, to discuss some tensions between antitrust and labor law, a more traditional method for regulating labor markets. Part I addresses a question raised in the very recent literature, about why antitrust …

Exploring The Phenomenon Of Hope In Adult Illiterate Haitians, Donita Grissom, Joyce Nutta, Edwidge Crevecoeur-Bryant, Sherron K. Roberts

Journal of Global Education and Research

Snyder’s hope theory depicts hope, through the frame of positive psychology, as a cognitive construct with the perceived sense of goal-directed, pathways, and agency thinking (Snyder et al., 1991). Hope levels have been measured in various countries; however, no research to date focused on Haitians. This study, conducted in Petit-Goâve, Haiti, addressed this gap by investigating hope, pathway, and agency levels derived from 135 Haitian-Kreyol adult literacy course participants. This manuscript reports scores of illiterate Haitians’ hope levels utilizing Snyder’s Adult Hope Dispositional Scale; the scores are explained by Snyder’s hope theory taking Haitian cultural and social landscapes into account. …

Brain and Mind Institute

As life expectancies rise globally, the number of people living with multiple chronic health conditions – commonly referred to as ‘multimorbidity’ – is rising. Multimorbidity has been recognised as especially challenging to respond to in countries whose health systems are under-funded, fragmented, and designed primarily for acute care, including in sub-Saharan Africa. A growing body of research in sub-Saharan Africa has sought to better understand the particular challenges multimorbidity poses in the region and to develop context-sensitive responses. However, with multimorbidity still crystallising as a subject of enquiry, there remains considerable heterogeneity in conceptualising multimorbidity across disciplines and fields, hindering …

The Problem Of Class Abstractionism, Michael A. Mccarthy, Mathieu Hikaru Desan Mar 2023

The Problem Of Class Abstractionism, Michael A. Mccarthy, Mathieu Hikaru Desan

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

With renewed interest in Marxism, class is back on the intellectual agenda. But so too is the familiar charge of “class reductionism.” This charge conflates two distinct claims regarding what we term the structural and political primacy of class. Structural primacy refers to the determinant role of class in social explanation, whereas political primacy refers to its centrality in radical politics. Crossing these distinct claims, we identify four possible positions on the primacy of class. Here, we focus on the two that affirm the structural primacy of class. What we call “class abstractionism,” which presumes to derive the political primacy …

I Was Looking For God: A Study Of Wehrmacht Personnel And Their Personal Relationships With Religion, Christopher Bishop Mar 2023

I Was Looking For God: A Study Of Wehrmacht Personnel And Their Personal Relationships With Religion, Christopher Bishop

Master's Theses

The Wehrmacht was Germany’s fighting force in the field during World War II. Its brutality and discriminatory practices rivaled that of the Nazi paramilitary and police units dispatched alongside them in newly conquered areas during this conflict. Coming from a society that was not at all unfamiliar with Christianity, some within the Wehrmacht related to Christianity in some form and attempted to use it to either justify actions or make sense of the world around them.

While considerable scholarship exists on the Nazi Party’s relationship to Christianity as a convenient propaganda tool for both soldier and civilian alike, the historiography …

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conceptual Articles Are Important for Theory Building but the Special Challenges of Developing Conceptual Articles on Entrepreneurship Has Not Been Fully Considered. We Begin to Fill This Gap by Discussing the Nature of Conceptual Articles on Entrepreneurship, Particularly Those Geared for Publication in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. We Introduce Three Dimensions of the Entrepreneurship Discipline—uniqueness, Relevance, and Multiplicity—and Discuss How They Can Affect the Positioning of Conceptual Articles and the Articulation of their Contribution. We Also Enumerate Some Basic Principles for Crafting Good Conceptual Articles and Present Guidelines based on Our Discussion.

Nationalist And Non-Nationalist Christianity In The United States, Aaron Epperson Mar 2023

Nationalist And Non-Nationalist Christianity In The United States, Aaron Epperson

University Honors Theses

Christian nationalism has broken into the American news cycle over the last few years through its connection to former President Donald Trump, and it's closely associated with violent events like the January 6th insurrection and the Charlottesville, VA, Unite the Right rally. However, its close association with Trump and depiction in a 24-hour news cycle makes defining what Christian nationalism is--and is not--difficult for those unfamiliar with nationalism and the broader American Christian tradition. This paper hopes to briefly explore what Christian nationalism is within the United States through an exploration of nationalism itself and a discussion of nationalist and …

Oregon has a vibrant creative presence, producing a diverse array of artists known on the national scale, in addition to independent artists mostly familiar on the local scene. The state is also home to many annual music festivals and live performance events that attract large numbers of attendees, while also playing host to music businesses big and small spanning sound recording studios, mastering engineers, composers, tuners, digital streaming services, graphic designers and music educators. All of these components of the Oregon commercial music industry economically impact their communities by providing entertainment and increasing profits for performance venues, distributing wages, and …

Exploring Perspectives On Social And Emotional Learning Programs In Schools, Gina N. Carruth

University Honors Theses

This study explores different viewpoints on the implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs in schools. Using a literature review approach, information was collected through peer-reviewed and online articles to examine the benefits and potential challenges of SEL programs in promoting students' social and emotional development. The findings reveal that while there is widespread support for SEL programs, there are also concerns about its implementation, effectiveness, and potential unintended consequences. This study contributes to the field by highlighting the need for a more nuanced and critical understanding of SEL programs, and their impact on students as well as insight …

Illusions Of Influence: Clerical Partisan Engagement During The 2022 Elections, Eric Marcelo O. Genilo Mar 2023

Illusions Of Influence: Clerical Partisan Engagement During The 2022 Elections, Eric Marcelo O. Genilo

Loyola Papers

The paper examines the boundary between the Church’s duty to form consciences and improper partisan activity by clergy. Analyzing the 2022 Philippine national elections, the author distinguishes “political rejection” from “political endorsement” to assess clerical involvement. He notes a troubling gap between church leaders and ordinary citizens in judging candidates, weakening the Church’s prophetic voice, and argues that active clerical campaigning risks conflating ecclesial authority with partisan advocacy.

Modeling Vehicle-Miles Of Travel Accounting For Latent Heterogeneity, Fatemeh Nazari, Abolfazl (Kouros) Mohammadian Mar 2023

Modeling Vehicle-Miles Of Travel Accounting For Latent Heterogeneity, Fatemeh Nazari, Abolfazl (Kouros) Mohammadian

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Vehicle use is associated with negative externalities such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Particularly in the U.S. as a car-oriented country, vehicle use — in terms of vehicle-miles of travel (VMT) — has been on the rise and is projected to increase in the future. To curb the VMT growth and mitigate the associated externalities, policy makers can design informed strategies based on VMT predicted by vehicle use models. However, traditional vehicle use models capture merely the observed heterogeneity across vehicle decision making units (e.g., individuals) and ignore the latent or taste heterogeneity sourced in …

An Exploratory Study Of How Measuring Knowledge-In-Use Adds Value Beyond Static Knowledge Measures, Julie Dwyer, Rachel E. Schachter, Alessandra E. Ward Mar 2023

An Exploratory Study Of How Measuring Knowledge-In-Use Adds Value Beyond Static Knowledge Measures, Julie Dwyer, Rachel E. Schachter, Alessandra E. Ward

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Research-supported knowledge about how children develop language is considered foundational for high-quality instruction and as such, measuring and developing teachers’ knowledge has been emphasized across the field of early childhood. However, there is a critical gap in understanding how this static knowledge gained through pre-service and in-service experiences is connected to enacted practice. To address this, we compared teachers’ static knowledge regarding language development as assessed via a traditional paper and pencil measure with their knowledge used in-the-moment during language interactions with children via stimulated recall interviews. Ten educators from a variety of early childhood programs completed the surveys and …

Divided Yet One: The Two Catholic Communities In China, Gabriel Liu Mar 2023

Divided Yet One: The Two Catholic Communities In China, Gabriel Liu

Loyola Papers

This paper examines the commonly held perception that two Catholic Churches exist in China. Drawing from the perspective of a native Chinese Catholic, it argues that the reality is not the existence of two distinct Churches but rather two historically divided Catholic communities. The study traces the origins, development, and evolution of this division over the past decades, noting that the separation was not originally intended by ecclesial authorities and was later shaped by the policies of the Chinese communist government. While considering the broader social and political context of China, the paper primarily seeks to present a clearer public …

Blockchains As Infrastructure And Semicommons, James Grimmelmann, A. Jason Windawi Mar 2023

Blockchains As Infrastructure And Semicommons, James Grimmelmann, A. Jason Windawi

William & Mary Law Review

Blockchains are not self-executing machines. They are resource systems designed by people, maintained by people, and governed by people. Their technical protocols help to solve some difficult problems in shared resource management, but behind those protocols there are always communities of people struggling with familiar challenges in governing their provision and use of common infrastructure.

In this Article, we describe blockchains as shared, distributed transactional ledgers using two frameworks from commons theory. Brett Frischmann’s theory of infrastructure provides an external view, showing how blockchains provide useful, generic infrastructure for recording transactions and why that infrastructure is most naturally made available …

Exploring Diversity And Depth Of Knowledge, Metacognition, And Individual Ambidexterity, Deddi Tedjakumara

Recent data show that the average lifespan of a company listed in the Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500) Index has declined from 32 years in 1965 to 21 years in 2020 (Clark, 2021), and it is estimated that 75% of the companies listed in the S&P 500 today will disappear from the list by 2027 (Hillenbrand, 2019). Organizational theory holds that for a company to be sustainable, it must strike a balance between exploring new possibilities and exploiting old certainties (March, 1991). The ability to manage the tension between exploration and exploitation is important at both organizational and individual …

Parental And Family Leave In The California Construction Industry, Hailee Malins Mar 2023

Parental And Family Leave In The California Construction Industry, Hailee Malins

Construction Management

Struggles between work life balance often result in lower levels of job and life satisfaction, and higher rates of inefficiency and employee turnover, with varying impact on employees based on seniority, gender and parenthood. Policies such as paid parental leave have shown positive effects on work life balance, but there is a lack of information on leave policies within the American construction industry. Focusing on California, this research aimed to determine employee's understanding, use and acceptance of these leave policies. Using a survey, we gain a better understanding of these goals. Rates of confidence in knowledge of paternal and family …

Exodus Allusions In The Midsection Of The Gospel Of Matthew, Cedric E. W. Vine Mar 2023

Exodus Allusions In The Midsection Of The Gospel Of Matthew, Cedric E. W. Vine

Faculty Publications

Matthean scholarship is divided as to whether the first recipients of the Gospel considered themselves to be part of early formative Judaism. Within the context of this debate, this study calls for the recognition of multiple exodus allusions in the midsection of the Gospel. These allusions reveal an Evangelist who either anticipated the possible need for withdrawal from hostile host communities or, equally plausibly, affirmed an ongoing separation process.

Institutional Design And Policy Responsiveness In Us States, Scott J. Lacombe Mar 2023

Institutional Design And Policy Responsiveness In Us States, Scott J. Lacombe

Government: Faculty Publications

There is significant disagreement on the moderating role of institutions on policy responsive- ness, yet overwhelmingly research in state politics has focused on single institutions. This project leverages a new aggregate scale of state institutions to evaluate if the collective insti- tutional context moderates the influence of public opinion on policy. I use a recently released latent scale of institutional context and find that high levels of accountability pressure strongly strengthen public opinion’s influence on policy for both economic and social policy, while the strength of a state’s checks and balance system is largely unrelated to policy responsiveness. These results …

Breaking The Cycle: Women’S Experience In Postsecondary Agricultural And Extension Education, Lauren L. Cline, Haley Rosson, Penny Pennington Weeks Mar 2023

Breaking The Cycle: Women’S Experience In Postsecondary Agricultural And Extension Education, Lauren L. Cline, Haley Rosson, Penny Pennington Weeks

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The “leaky educational pipeline” metaphor refers to the steady tapering off of women obtaining graduate degrees and reaching the level of a tenured faculty member, although the number of women earning college degrees has surpassed males since the 1980s. Women are disproportionately represented among faculty and leadership at land-grant institutions and in the agricultural education profession. The purpose of this study was to provide a synthesis of women’s experience in postsecondary agricultural and extension education (AEE) by describing the common and diverging challenges, opportunities, and mentoring experiences of women faculty and graduate students in the profession. The study was a …

Work-Life Balance During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Insights From Extension Professionals, David C. Diehl, Glenn D. Israel, July D. Nelson, Sebastian Galindo

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Using a retrospective post-then-pre design, we asked Extension professionals to reflect on their work-life balance before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives were to assess whether work-life balance variables (work interference with personal life, personal life interference with work, and work-personal life enhancement) changed from before to during the pandemic, whether any changes in work-life balance were concentrated in households with parents who had caregiving responsibilities, and whether changes in any of these work-life balance variables were associated with respondents’ gender, marital status, or work location. Findings indicated that (1) personal life interference with work significantly increased and work-personal …

Organizations’ Perception Of Service-Learning Study Abroad Programs And Transformational Partnerships, Caroline Cully Garbers, T. Grady Roberts, Dale Pracht

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Global education is becoming increasingly important in higher education institutions in the United States. Concurrently, service-learning is another educational activity becoming more popular in higher education institutions. Very little research has been done on the impact on the community from a service-learning perspective, especially as a part of a study abroad. The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of a short-term service-learning study abroad program on the community partners (organizations) where students completed service-learning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with leaders of organizations in Ireland who hosted students from the University of Florida during a study abroad program. …

BACKGROUND: Despite international efforts to improve reproductive health indicators, little attention is paid to the contributions of contextual factors to modern contraceptive coverage, especially in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. This study aimed to identify the association between country-level Gender Inequality and Health Expenditure with demand for family planning satisfied by modern contraceptive methods (DFPSm) in Latin American sexually active women.

METHODS: Our analyses included data from the most recent (post-2010) Demographic and Health Survey or Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey from 14 LAC countries. Descriptive analyses and multilevel logistic regressions were performed. Six individual-level factors were included. …
