Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Don’T Come Crying To My Funeral, Charlotte Hoskins May 2024

Don’T Come Crying To My Funeral, Charlotte Hoskins

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this article, I describe a Makushi wake in Guyana, where an opposition was drawn between people in mourning and their perception of others who appeared to them to be much more like partygoers. This opposition in affective states was made evident through the enactment of associated oppositions in bodily practices: feeding and eating, speaking and singing, and forms of social availability. Rather than consider the divergence in affective states as a form of moral disorder, I argue that an affective divide allows grief to be expressed by the mourners and safely circumscribed by their still-living community, who continue to …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Status Of Income Inequality New England In 2022, Aidan Wilkinson

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper investigates the status of income inequality within the New England states in 2022. The empirical analysis conducted within this paper uses a similar model within Fadi Fawaz et al. for high income countries to analyze and predict the Gini coefficient within the six New England States. More specifically, the model that is tested analyzes monthly unemployment rate, the labor force participation rate, welfare spending, and the top 1% wealth distribution. The results show that Rhode Island and Maine Gini indexes could only be described by the top 1% wealth distribution and welfare spending, respectively. We also find that …

Broken Asset Bubbles: The Factors Affect Japan's Economy From Prosperity To Decline, Mark Yang

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

Japan was in the most prosperous period of the economy in the 1980s, during which the GDP growth rate of Japan was high-speed, and the economic scale of Japan was second only to the United States in the world. Japan became the second largest economy in the world. But the boom was the unsustainable illusion of a bubble economy of rising house and stock prices. In the early 1990s, the collapse of Japanese real estate and stock market prices severely affected the Japanese economy, leaving many banks and companies heavily indebted. Japan's economy fell into a decade-long stagnation known as …

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya May 2024

When Cultural Expressions Exploited By The Right-Wing Groups: A Comparative Analysis Between The Case Of Indonesia And Germany, Yosua Praditya

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Culture is the expression of life that has been held by society for centuries, but it is possible for it to be hijacked by right-wing groups for their own purposes. Since it is an essential component in the formation of collective identities, it is misappropriated by the group to cultivate its ideology and to fragment social cohesion. The case between Indonesia and Germany has been chosen to analyse the similarities of right-wing characters in exploiting culture, including music, through the lens of Margareth Archer's cultural theory and Ulrich Beck's risk society theory, and later compared using Midlarsky’s extremism perspective. …

The study was conducted using critical race theory as its theoretical framework. Four experienced clergy participated in two …

What Gives? Trust, Risk, Altruism, And Reciprocity Across 76 Countries, Sherwin Mosavat May 2024

What Gives? Trust, Risk, Altruism, And Reciprocity Across 76 Countries, Sherwin Mosavat

Master's Theses

Abstract:

The decades-long literature pertaining to gender-specific preferences lies at the intersection of economics and psychology with a primary focus on the correlation between economic development and gender-specific preferences. Better understanding of this correlation has helped researchers understand how individuals make decisions for their education, finances, and occupation. Falk & Hermle (2018) assess the correlation between GDP and various gender-specific preferences including trust, risk, altruism, and reciprocity. In order to better understand the relationship between economic development and gender-specific preferences, I expand on the Falk & Hermle 2018 framework by introducing new macroeconomic, prosocial, and cultural variables as additional explanatory …

Beyond Black And White Spatial Imaginaries: A Case Study Of The Model Cities Area In St. Louis, Missouri, Clark Randall

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Building on, and departing from, George Lipsitz’ theory of white and Black spatial imaginaries, this article analyzes how race-based spatial imaginaries took form in the urban planning politics of 1960’s St. Louis. Specifically, the era of Model Cities funding from 1966-1972 is evaluated as a case study of competing spatial imaginaries for the cities’ future involving the majority Black neighborhoods of the near north side and the preexisting white planning establishment. A part of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society, Model Cities sought to usher in a new framework for citizen planning, putting residents and their local knowledge at the head …

Listening To Young Children With Disabilities: Experiences Of Quality In Mainstream Primary Education, Katherine Gulliver May 2024

Listening To Young Children With Disabilities: Experiences Of Quality In Mainstream Primary Education, Katherine Gulliver

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

All children should have access to quality education through a child-centred pedagogy. An inclusive, child-centred pedagogy uses a strength-based view of children that recognises each child as unique and competent, providing children with multiple opportunities to explore and learn at their own pace. However, competing tensions in mainstream primary education in England can impact this through a performative school culture that focusses on progress and attainment rather than the successful inclusion of all children including those with disabilities. This adult-centric view of education quality does not consider children's experiences of what happens in mainstream primary education, through their perspectives. The …

Cuba And The United States In The Platt Amendment Period: Perception And Intent, Lee Carter

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

The relationship between Cuba and the United States continues to perplex many Americans in the twenty-first century. How can a nation so nearby, that was once so closely tied to the United States, be so antagonistic towards the United States? This study will trace the perceptions, over time, of the United States-Cuba relationship during the early Cuban Republic (1902-1934), a time period in which the United States maintained a controlling relationship defined under the Platt Amendment. In this process, the Cuban perceptions of the relationship will be considered, specifically noting differences of views among different social statuses and perspectives. Then, …

Community Policing And Meta-Stereotypes: Improving Citizenry-Police Relations In A Large, Multicultural Urban Area, Through A Participatory Action Research Community Safety Workshop, Cornelius Darnell Davis

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The Term Policing and its surrounding themes are complex and deserve adequate attention. Since the early 1900’s, citizenry and police have had mistrustful relationships. Over the span of three eras, both positive and negative citizenry-police relations have been highlighted. In more recent years, the timely capturing of videos of over-policing and excessive use of deadly force incidents (mainly in BIPOC communities) have exacerbated negative citizenry-police relations, resulting in the lack of procedural justice and police legitimacy. Excessive policing and the seemingly constant deaths of unarmed African Americans undoubtedly contribute to the lack of confidence in police to effectively ensure all …

Strategies For Reducing Employee Turnover Costs, Karen Coates May 2024

Strategies For Reducing Employee Turnover Costs, Karen Coates

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

High employee turnover costs are prevalent in academic healthcare centers. Healthcare center leaders who experience high employee turnover also experience high operational costs. Grounded in Blau's social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore strategies executive and senior healthcare leaders utilized to minimize employee turnover costs. Through interviews with four academic healthcare center leaders on the East Coast of the United States, using Ming-Shu Yuan's (2019) narrative analysis, four primary themes were identified: (a) strategies, (b) implementation, (c) measuring success, and (d) leadership support. One key recommendation is for academic medical center leaders to increase …
